JIWA KORUP. 15min., Malaysia Directed by MOHD HISHAM SALEH A low-ranking officer's corrupt leadership is scrutinised, compelling him to confront the repercussions of his unethical behaviour. This raw AI short film delves into themes of power and loyalty, illustrating how even the most reliable individuals can become lost to corruption. Get to know the filmmaker: What motivated you to make this film? I wrote the screenplay in 2020 amidst Malaysia's COVID lockdown, motivated by daily news of sacrifices made by frontline police and the 1MDB scandal revealing pervasive corruption. My aim was to explore what truly compels someone to betray their oath—whether it's power, love, or lust. By incorporating an LGBT relationship, I wanted to illustrate that love can remain untainted even amid profound corruption, and that true affection transcends legal and social boundaries. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take to make this film? Remarkably, the whole film was created in only 20 days, driven by nearly 20,000 AI prompts. I had written the entire screenplay years beforehand but commenced AI production in early 2025. A close friend assisted with color grading—harmonising rain-drenched blues, earthy browns, and refreshing highlights—and another collaborator crafted the sound design, incorporating industrial percussion, menacing drones, and eerie water-drip effects.

In this episode we explore the importance of remaining open to unexpected detours and serendipitous moments in our creative and personal lives. Our guest, Bernadette Jiwa, a recognized authority on storytelling in business innovation and the author of the book Hunch, offers deep insights into how curiosity, empathy, and imagination are vital traits for spotting transformative opportunities. Jiwa explains the crucial difference between ideas and opportunities, emphasizing the importance of addressing real problems rather than merely generating ideas. We explore the concept that sometimes our objectives and goals can act as blinders, preventing us from recognizing valuable peripheral discoveries. Jiwa shares practical strategies for developing better awareness and tapping into serendipity, fostering the kind of curiosity and attention that can lead to breakthrough innovations.Throughout the episode, Jiwa provides examples of how successful entrepreneurs have turned seemingly mundane observations into impactful solutions, reinforcing the value of remaining curious and empathetic in our pursuits.Key Learnings:Unexpected Discoveries: Often, the most significant breakthroughs come from being open to accidents and unexpected findings, as demonstrated by Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin.Curiosity, Empathy, Imagination: These three qualities are common traits among individuals who consistently generate great ideas and can be cultivated by anyone.Opportunities vs. Ideas: True innovation addresses opportunities (problems begging for solutions) rather than just coming up with ideas. The Limitation of Objectives: Strict adherence to goals can limit our ability to see valuable opportunities in our surroundings. The Power of Noticing: Paying attention to the world around us, asking pertinent questions, and listening to our environment can lead to significant insights and innovations.Get full interviews and daily content in the Daily Creative app at DailyCreative.app.

Amin. (Dod).

After opening an investigation into Cindy's death, investigators learned that, for nearly a decade leading up to her death, Cindy James had repeatedly reported to Richmond Police that she was a victim of harassment, stalking, and assault, and had even turned over threatening letters and answering machine messages as evidence of the harassment; yet local police were unable to verify her story or intervene to protect her.At first, Cindy's death appeared to be the inevitable and tragic conclusion of a years'-long campaign of harassment and terror by an unknown stalker; however, when investigators began digging into Cindy's personal history, they discovered evidence that contradicted their initial assumptions and pointed towards a far stranger explanation for her death.Thank you to the incredible Dave White of Bring Me The Axe Podcast for research and writing support! On June 8, 1989, a municipal worker discovered the body of forty-four-year-old Cindy James in the backyard of an abandoned home in Richmond, British Columbia, hogtied and with a woman's stocking wrapped around her neck. Two weeks earlier, friends had reported Cindy missing when she failed to show up for a game of cards and when the authorities searched Cindy's car, they discovered blood and other signs that indicated she may have met with foul play. After opening an investigation into Cindy's death, investigators learned that, for nearly a decade leading up to her death, Cindy James had repeatedly reported to Richmond Police that she was a victim of harassment, stalking, and assault, and had even turned over threatening letters and answering machine messages as evidence of the harassment; yet local police were unable to verify her story or intervene to protect her.At first, Cindy's death appeared to be the inevitable and tragic conclusion of a years'-long campaign of harassment and terror by an unknown stalker; however, when investigators began digging into Cindy's personal history, they discovered evidence that contradicted their initial assumptions and pointed towards a far stranger explanation for her death.Thank you to the incredible Dave White of Bring Me The Axe Podcast for research and writing support!ReferencesGraham, Patracia. 1989. Ampunilah aku Tuhan, sebab aku orang berdosa. Amin. (Dod).

The Fatimids were an Ismaili dynasty that reigned over a diverse religious and ethnic population for about 200 years, emerging from the vibrant 10th century world of the Mediterranean. At its height, the Fatimid Empire stretched across the length of the southern Mediterranean and down the Red Sea coast – what we know as Algeria today all the way to the Levant, and along the west coast of Arabia – and included the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, as well as Jerusalem, Damascus, and even Sicily. The authority of its Imam-Caliphs was recognised as far as present-day Iran, Central Asia, Yemen, and India. The story of how the dynasty came about, is as remarkable as some of its achievements. Dr Shainool Jiwa is Senior Research Fellow at The Institute of Ismaili Studies, and has lectured and published on Fatimid Studies for over three decades. She has published The Fatimids 1: The Rise of a Muslim Empire (2018) and co-edited The Shi'i World: Pathways in Tradition and Modernity (2015) and The Fatimid Caliphate: Diversity of Traditions (2017) as well as translating key medieval Arabic texts relating to Fatimid history. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, UK. Listen now to this episode, and subscribe to Muslim Footprints.
