In this episode of *Cutting Deep Into Horror*, hosts Henrique Couto and Rachael Rodolfi dive into the harrowing landscape of Yorgos Lanthimos' *The Killing of a Sacred Deer*, a film that embodies the depths of trauma and moral complexity. Join us as we engage in a profound discussion on parental responsibility, guilt, and the chilling consequences of choices made in the dark corners of our minds. As we unpack the film's narrative, Henrique and Rachael examine the nuances of familial bonds challenged by the haunting specter of a boy seeking revenge for his father's death. The podcast begins with a heartfelt conversation about family gatherings, setting a stark contrast for the dark themes to follow. Henrique and Rachael explore their emotional connections to the film while highlighting key moments that illustrate the struggles between love and moral dilemmas. The episode allows listeners to traverse the unsettling journey of Stephen (Colin Farrell), a heart surgeon whose seemingly perfect life begins to unravel as he's confronted with the consequences of his past actions. From the eerie presentation of family dynamics to the deeply unsettling interactions with Martin (Barry Keoghan), the hosts analyze how fear and trauma manifest in frightening yet relatable ways. Their observations are punctuated with humor, insightful commentary, and frank discussions about the nature of horror and personal responsibility. As Stephen grapples with Martin's demands for retribution, the difficult choices he faces culminate in a shocking climax that forces the audience to confront their own beliefs about justice and sacrifice. The unique storytelling style, mixing dark humor with visceral horror, is a focal point of discussion, as Henrique and Rachael reflect on the movie's impact and the moral quandaries it presents. In later segments, the conversation delves into the critical moments leading to the film's unsettling conclusion, exploring themes of existential dread and the fleeting nature of life. They touch on the symbolism of isolation and the haunting reality of familial love overshadowed by the specter of loss. With compelling insights, they guide listeners through a narrative that resonates with the intuitively unsettling nature of guilt and choice.Ultimately, the episode poses crucial questions that challenge listeners to reflect on their values and the complexities of human relationships. As the discussion draws to a close, listeners are left to ponder whether the price of revenge is ever worth the cost of losing one's humanity.**Join the Conversation**If you're interested in sharing your thoughts on this chilling episode or the themes explored in *The Killing of a Sacred Deer*, we want to hear from you! We explore our bodies in part 2 of our "SEX EDUCATION WITH EMILY/EMMA STONE" double-feature!We talk POOR THINGS (2003), the film where Ms. Stone's character masturb8tes with an apple! Yes, it's weird, but what would you expect from the director of 2017's THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER? EMILY STONE (she prefers we call her that rather than EMMA, and she asked nice!) It's a subversive imagining of the already subversive FRANKENSTEIN, and you know what? We dig it! THE LOBSTER en THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER via MUBI en CineMember. This episode we look at the early filmography of Yorgos Lanthimos featuring DOGTOOTH! Famous for his more Western entries in his filmography, THE LOBSTER, THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER, THE FAVOURITE and his recent Oscar winner POOR THINGS, we go back to the seminal turning point in his career: DOGTOOTH. He's been a prominent figure in Greek Cinema prior (part of the aptly put "Weird Wave") but it's fair to say that DOGTOOTH put him on the International map, nominated for a Best Foreign Feature Oscar in 2009. Doing so made this deeply darkly comic film (or horror, depending on your interpretation) available to a much wider audience at the time. And what a treat that is! It's funny how films like this have the habit of taking us all to the place we tend to stray to; the darkest places our humor can go honestly. Certainly Josh (not to throw him under the bus). Be warned, there is a lot of sarcastic chatter about inter-familial relations for which we do not seriously condone. But as we say, if you're not laughing, you're crying. Sit in your "sea", turn down the "pussy" and smell your "zombies", here we go!

Filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos first emerged as part the so-called ‘weird wave' of Greek cinema, and is known for unsettling themes and absurdist humour of his films. He made his mark internationally in 2009 with Dogtooth, which won a Cannes film festival prize and was nominated for an Oscar. Shifting into English language cinema with The Lobster, starring Colin Farrell and Olivia Colman, he continued to win awards and acclaim with The Killing Of A Sacred Deer and his historical comedy drama The Favourite. His most recent film Poor Things, starring Emma Stone, has been nominated for eleven Academy awards, including best film and best director.Yorgos Lanthimos tells John Wilson about his upbringing in Athens, the son of a professional basketball player who was part of the Greek national team, and how, after graduating from film school, he began making commercials and pop videos. He reveals why the work of the American photographer Diane Arbus, renowned for the underlying psychological tension of her portraits, was a major inspiration on the mood of his films. He also cites the influences of the German choreographer Pina Bausch on visual elements in his films, including dance routines seen in The Favourite and Poor Things. The plays of the British writer Sarah Kane, including Blasted and Crave, were also influential on the tone of his darkly humorous films. Producer: Edwina PitmanDiane Arbus' quote is from the documentary film Going Where I've Never Been: The Photography of Diane Arbus (1972), voiced by Mariclare Costello.
Our lead-up to The Best Films of 2023 episode continues as we cover Yorgos' Lanthimos' ribald, fisheye fantasy: Poor Things. Is it the Greek filmmaker's most accessible film? We talk Emma Stone, fearless performances, and the sweetly demented world constructed for this raunchy coming-of-age fable.

Also MEG 2: DIE TIEFE. (aka THE BOY AND THE HERON) bei CIRCUS MAXIMUS, THE QUEEN MARY, HAVOC und SILENT NIGHT landen. In diesem Sinne: COWABUNGA. Und bleibt so gesund wie gut drauf. Ahoi.

Strap on your surgical mask and/or your combat gear as we kick off Operation week with a discussion of the Top 5 Operations. You'll no doubt remember that our operation theme was inspired by us picking two movies with the word ‘operation' in the title in a row so we thought we'd double down on all that operation action. From various kinds and sizes of operations, to operations in different places and countries, right through to examples of operations within operations, and operations within operations within operations, we've got all your operation needs covered. It's a very operationary week is what I'm trying to say. We'd already unanimously decreed Yorgos Lanthimos a favourite of the pod for his absurdist comedy THE LOBSTER and he uses some of that film's tone and style in 2017's THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER. Troubled teenager Martin (Barry Keoghan) gradually insinuates himself into the life of Steven, (Colin Farrell) the cardiovascular surgeon who failed to save his fathers life, or maybe, man fails to take responsibility for his actions and is punished by the gods. Bizarre performances from fantastic actors, some seriously shocking and transgressive scenes, allusions to Greek mythology, yes I know what you're thinking: that is literally everybody's idea of a perfect movie but it's also beautifully shot and edited and has a terrifying score so there's that too. Difficult to recommend to everyone, but I'm still thinking about it way more than the last Marvel movie I watched, which is a grossly unfair and ridiculous comparison but I've just made it anyway.Operation week finishes with HILLTOP HOSPITAL in which two conjoined twin Siamese cats are separated, with at least 50% of the patients surviving. Meanwhile a love triangle develops in the workplace between a cat, a dog and a hippo, while a human faced turtle scares Cris. Either a noble attempt to normalise hospitals and medical treatment for children or a surreal ER parody, it's your call.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Bad Dads
Ciao.

Horrifying spaghetti consumption, too many children for Henley's emotional well-being and lots of confusing feelings about Barry Keoghan (hot?), this week we're recapping THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER! Killer teens is the latest theme. "Heavenly Creatures" (1994) is an outstanding film in so many ways. Peter Jackson's (Lord of the Rings, meh) finest film? Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet steal the show in their debuts as the murderous duo. "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" (2017) - the best film of 2017? Unnerving to watch, it is definitely not for everyone. Next up, French Noir with "Elevator to the Gallows" (1958) and "Le Samourai" (1967).Thanks for listening!Did we get something wrong? The Killing of a Sacred Deer“ (2017).

JOJO RABBIT, DIE STUNDE DER SIEGER, WILD TALES oder auch THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER gehören.
The Terror Table is back in full force as Kyle returns to the show for a Yorgos Lanthimos double feature of DOGTOOTH (2009) and THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER (2017). Other titles discussed include: Gretel & Hansel Score by Rob, Hell House LLC 2: The Abadon Hotel, Sometimes They Come Back, Things Heard and Seen, The Power and Boys from County Hell.

We were going to do an April Fool's episode again (like last year) but we decided there is too much fake stuff out there and decided to go with what little movie news there is this week and reviews of Ford v Ferrari and the new(er) version of Pet Sematary. Then Todd added some Director and Critical Acclaim April Fool's Movies just for fun. Well, the segment is fun. The movies... not so much. www.cinemasavants.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
