Welcome Ben Free listeners to a wonderful episode of Ben interviewing an amazing person that loves music we have Prosky. Take a listen into how love of music, magazines and film can take someone on a beautiful music journey. They told them they had LIFE, and they were never coming home. Now they are home through overturned convictions and survived sentences. Recently coming home himself after 18 years in prison, Benjamin Frandsen leads us on weekly interviews through the emotions, thoughts and processes of those who have survived their heavy handed sentences. When Benjamin Frandsen was only ten months old, his mother would sit him up on the kitchen counter so she could chat with him, not in baby-talk lexicon but rather like a small university colleague. After witnessing this phenomenon one day, her friend exclaimed, “Why do you talk to that baby like he's Winston Churchill?” “Because,” she fired back, “if I wanted him to saying nothing but woodjy-goodgy- gaga all the time, I'd talk to him like that. I want him to use his words!” And use them he did. At the age of ten, he delighted her with a homemade book of his original poetry. Basking in the light of her proud face, he felt as if the course of his life were being set, like tumblers in a lock clicking into place. He knew then what he wanted to be when he grew up—a wordsmith. Since then, he's written environmental impact report, copywriting for Barbie™, and a professional contract screenplay. His publications have included several editorials, flash-fiction and essay pieces in Columbia University's exCHANGE magazine, poetry in Iconoclast, and memoir excerpts through the Vera Institute of Justice. He has won prizes and honorariums for screenplays, websodes, poetry, and essays through PEN America and has been published in their annual anthologies for three years running. Last year his essay earned him PEN's prestigious L'Engle-Rahman Prize for Mentorship, and this year he is launching his career in professional public speaking, writing and developing scripts forThe Coin studio, and hosting his own show called the Ben Free podcast. Recently, his close friend cautioned him, “You can't just do everything!” Ben simply grinned and said, “Watch me.”
Seemingly emerging with many of his career trademarks already on display, THIEF (1981) is writer and director Michael Mann's film debut and features the auteur's usual meticulous attention to detail and commitment to realism in this terrific crime revenge thriller. When strictly freelance diamond heist expert Frank's fence meets an untimely demise he is forced into a meeting with mafia boss Leo (Robert Prosky), who persuades him to undertake one last, lucrative job. Somehow feeling fresh despite the familiar tropes (even for the time), Mann hired ex-con John Santucci as a consultant to help bring a level of authenticity to the events of the movie which is never more evident than in the film's opening scenes, where Caan was specifically trained how to crack a safe. After THE GODFATHER, James Caan rates this as containing some of his finest work, especially an intimate conversation in a diner scene with romantic co-lead Jessie (the incredibly named Tuesday Weld) as they share their twisted version of the American Dream. Frank is an unrepentant recidivist but is sympathetic in his own way and his strong code is at odds with the fantastically assembled cast of amoral bad guys - many making their debut including GREMLINS 2 THE NEW BATCH's Prosky - who seem like almost genial and very ordinary middle-aged men until they are suddenly terrifying and dangling you over a vat of acid. If you want a rational, unbiased opinion on this film, mosey on over to one of the 500,000 other movie review podcasts begging you for downloads. This is not it. Be forewarned, this is Jake's third favorite film of all time, any genre. . . maybe even higher now that I type this out. . . oh, I guess now would be a good time to admit that I (Jake) have to write these dumb descriptions in the third person. There was only one person who would endure Jake bouncing up and down in his chair as his eyes fling apart like atoms in the Hadron Collider, his beautiful, patient, very patient wife: Ciara. That's right, you have begged and pleaded and the pulchritudinous prodigal spouse returns. Gremlins 2: The New Batch came out in 1990, but instead of its deserved thunderous applause, the more fitting sound effect would be a wet fart. Simply put, this movie may have been ahead of its time. Irreverent, fourth wall breaking, absurdist films were not really mainstream by that point. Jake forgot to mention this on the episode, but do you think Deadpool would exist without Gremlins 2? Also, when Disney inevitably obtains Warner Brothers, let's make that crossover happen. Directed by Joe Dante (The Howling), who would only come back to the franchise with full creative control. Creature effects by Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London), who is a gilded god of gore and grossout. Zach Galligan returns as Billy Peltzer and Phoebe Cates reprises her role as Kate Beringer. Their old pal, Murray Futterman, played by Dick Miller, comes to visit them in the big city, from ol' Kingston Falls. John Glover plays industrialist Daniel Clamp. Robert J. Prosky plays Grandpa Fred. Robert Picardo plays head of security, Forster. Finally, the late and great Sir Christopher Lee Plays Dr. Cushing Catheter. The film also features cameos by Hulk Hogan, Dick Butkus, Bubba Smith, Rick Ducommun, Leonard Maltrin, and the indomitable John Astin, who many will remember as Gomez Addams. Find out about deleted scense, production, conception, literary references, easter eggs, basically everything that Jake has learned from worshiping this film for nearly 30 years, all in one hour! In part one of my conversation with Crystal Huang, the co-founder and CEO of ProSky, she talked about her software service that helps HR managers gain deep insights into the state of their companies. In this second part of our conversation, Crystal talks about her inspiration to stop building companies for others and start building one of her own, and how her own brother joined the effort—a mix of family and business few would desire, but she finds successful.
Anyone who's spent five minutes on the internet has encountered a myriad of personality tests—many humorous, some serious, but all offering a new reflection of what sort of person you are. And if you happen to be an HR person, you may want that same insight into what sort of company you have. Unfortunately, there are scant few tools to help deliver that insight. At least, that's what Crystal Huang noticed—and that's why she started ProSky, a company that offers a software platform to help HR managers better understand the state of their workforce so they can chart an informed course forward. On this edition of UpTech Report, Crystal tells us about the origins of this idea and how she hopes it will help people build stronger, more diverse companies.
German soldiers have been stationed at the Keep, but an ancient evil has awoken killing more of them each night. The Nazis are forced to turn to a Jewish professor to help them solve the mysteries of the Keep before more soldiers fall to this unknown force. Just before Miami Vice Michael Mann wrote & directed the World War II horror film The Keep (1983) based on the novel by F. Paul Wilson. The Keep had an impressive cast with Scott Glenn, Alberta Watson, Jürgen Prochnow, Robert Prosky, Gabriel Byrne, and Ian McKellen. Despite an all-star cast and Michael Mann at the helm the film would fail due to a series of unfortunate events that would change Mann's original vision for the film. With such a strong premise Invasion of the Remake deems The Keep worthy of our patented re-imagining. Join us this week as we enter The Keep! The 1993 inspirational (to idiots) sports drama, "Rudy," is based on a true story—meaning that it’s mostly made up. Most of the characters never existed, and all the events are misconstrued to make it seem like this little manipulative weasel actually accomplished something special. He didn't. Sean Astin plays Rudy, a mediocre high school football player who wouldn't give up until he schemed his way into the University of Notre Dame and onto the football team. Like any true heroic journey, the process entailed a lot of butt kissing, begging and lying. Jon Favreau plays D-Bob, a lecherous douche who becomes fast friends with Rudy after realizing that, although they have different goals, they are cut from the same repugnant cloth. Charles S. Dutton plays Fortune, a mysterious groundskeeper with a heart of gold who may or may not be a ghost. He doesn’t realize how awful Rudy is, and he inadvertently mentors him throughout the execution of his Machiavellian plan. And weirdly Vince Vaughn is in this movie. Join us as we discuss some incriminating facts about the real-life Rudy, our thoughts on motivational speakers, and why this movie should be forgotten.
