Check out a new nostalgic animated holiday special Christmas With Grubbs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chCV9cuLpVY It's Christmas AND it's been 40 years since Gremlins came out. Let's see what Nostalgia Critic thinks of this "kinda" Christmas classic. Gremlins is a 1984 American comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus and starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday and Frances Lee McCain, with Howie Mandel providing the voice of Gizmo, the main mogwai character. It draws on legends of folkloric mischievous creatures that cause malfunctions—"gremlins"—in the British Royal Air Force going back to World War II. The story follows young man Billy Peltzer, who receives a strange creature as a pet, which then spawns other creatures that transform into aggressive, imp-like monsters that wreak havoc on Billy's hometown during Christmas Eve. Steve Agee (Peacemaker, The Sarah Silverman Program, Superstore) joins the Spiel boys to talk about the very festive, very zany, and incredibly dark family film Gremlins, produced by Steven Spielberg, directed by Joe Dante, and starring Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. The trio discuss the film's reception upon release, why it still holds up today, how it helped usher in the PG-13 rating, how devastatingly gorgeous Phoebe Cates is, and how Gremlins grew out of the famous unmade Spielberg evil aliens movie titled Night Skies. On this show, our specialty is sequels, sequels, and more sequels. From the good ones, to the bad ones, to the really ugly ones, we'll be covering them all! We've got homicidal maniacs that won't stay in the grave, sci-fi epics whose stories cannot be told in a single tale, and much much more. For our 28th episode, we'll be taking on the often overlooked "WARLOCK: THE ARMAGEDDON" from 1993. This Part Two to the original 1989 classic Warlock was directed by the late Anthony Hickox (Full Eclipse, Hellrasiser III: Hell On Earth, Waxwork 1 & 2) and starred the late Julian Sands (Arachnophobia, Leaving Lost Vegas, Boxing Helena) as the titular Warlock once again. Supporting cast is as solid as 90's horror can get with roles played by Joanna Pacula, Bruce Glover, Chris Young, Paula Marshall, R.G. Armstrong, Charles Hallahan, Zach Galligan, George "Buck" Flowers and more. This sequel finds our suave Warlock on a quest to unleash satan upon the world and battling against an order of Druids in his way. Join our regular hosts Cameron Scott and Eric Phillips as they dissect and take a deep dive into a world filled with black magic, runestones, Druids, flesh maps and satanic panic! Enjoy! "Picasso. Definitely Picasso."

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Dave Parker (THE HILLS RUN RED, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, PUPPET MASTER: DOKTOR DEATH, IT WATCHES) returns to THE MOVIE CRYPT to discuss the making of his latest film YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE LET ME IN (now playing on Tubi). From the whirlwind process of being hired to direct the project and immediately shipping off to Italy… to the supposedly “haunted” villa that much of the film was shot in and filming in a real underground tomb… to the challenges and the joys of helming a film as a “work for hire” while still finding ways to creatively make it your own… to the secrets for winning over a new crew… to returning to work with the great Charlie Band and directing PUPPET MASTER: DOKTOR DEATH (2022)… to how to stretch a production's extremely limited resources to create the best possible film… to why editing experience can be so crucial to directing… Dave's experiences from the last several years are an inspiring lesson on how to hang in there when it feels like things aren't going the way you want it to and just how quickly the tide can change. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a filmmaker who is working crew jobs while looking to prepare for the moment when he steps into the director's chair, Dave dishes on the food in Italy, and the group nerds out on the 2024 Oscars and the movies they've been digging. Check out Dave's first MOVIE CRYPT appearance way back on episode 19 in the “Classic Crypt” tier on www.Patreon.com/TheMovieCrypt Meet Adam NEXT weekend (March 22 - 24) at HORRORHOUND WEEKEND in Cincinnati, OH when he appears along with HATCHET franchise stars Kane Hodder, Joel David Moore, Joshua Leonard, and Zach Galligan! We close out Dante's In Fer November with a movie that could not be better suited to Black Friday, an anti-capital, anti-consumerist screed with a sharp sense of humour that lands perfectly in that liminal space between Halloween and Christmas. It's 1984's Gremlins, directed by Joe Dante, written by Chris Columbus, and starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Frances Lee McCain, Corey Feldman, Dick Miller, Judge Reinhold, Jonathan Banks, and featuring the voices of Howie Mandel and Frank Welker. Like Die Hard, it is perfect Christmas Eve alternative programming, but the movie is such a blast that you can watch it any time of year. It released in fact on June 8th, 1984 -- the very same day as Ghostbusters, as horror comedy was having a moment on that particular Friday. It's a J Mo favourite that Hayley had never seen, and was an easy nomination to be this month's entry into the podcast canon of classic films. Other works discussed in this episode include Fantastic Voyage, Small Soldiers, the concept of comfort movies, Hot Rod, Black Dynamite, Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain, Dark Blue, Run This Town, Nightbreed, Hellraiser, Band of Brothers, Homeland, Dreamcatcher, Plants & Animals, Super Mario RPG, road rage, It's A Wonderful Life, Furby, Back to the Future, Goonies, Super 8, Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, secret nanomachines, and the rom-zom-com trifecta of Life After Beth, Warm Bodies, and Burying The Ex. If you'd like to watch Gremlins along with us before listening to the episode, it's currently streaming in Canada on Crave, Starz and Hollywood Suite at the time of publication. We'll be back next week to kick off A DePalmber to ReMalmber, a three-week series on the films of Brian DePalma, with 1983's Scarface, a film that can currently be found streaming on Netflix, Starz and Amazon Prime in Canada. Find us on Twitter @ADHDDVDpod for the full December release schedule!
This week, we take a fantastic voyage inside Martin Short, as Dante's In Fer November continues with 1987's Innerspace, directed by Joe Dante and starring Dennis Quaid, Martin Short, Meg Ryan, Kevin McCarthy, Fiona Lewis, Robert Picardo, Wendy Schaal, Henry Gibson and Dick Miller. It's a delightfully silly adventure movie that neither host had seen, as J Mo nabbed it on Blu-ray earlier this year based largely on the novelty of Short having a leading role in a big, broad action movie. And to be clear, he is outrageously good in this -- an odd glimpse into the leading man career he could have had that never really materialized for him. Plus: Hayley's mom is hooked on Tubi, and Justin takes a field trip to The Marvels as we try to assess the MCU's future, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, and how Disney has flattened their own theatrical revenues across the board. Other works discussed on this episode include Loki, Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain Marvel, Oppenheimer, Bottoms, The Worst Person In The World, Past Lives, After Sun, Meet Dave, Mission: Impossible, and Clifford among others. Joe Dante Month wraps up next week with the Christmas horror comedy classic Gremlins, with Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates. If you'd like to watch the movie before next week's show, Gremlins is currently streaming in Canada on Crave, Starz and Hollywood Suite. See you then!

On this holiday edition of Parallax Views, Robbie Martin of Media Roots Radio and the documentary A Very Heavy Agenda returns to spread the holiday cheer of a Christmas classic... the 1984 Joe Dante/Steven Spielberg collaboration Gremlins! Yes, Gremlins is a Christmas movie, especially if Die Hard is considered a Christmas movie! It's a festive conversation about the little green monsters that terrorized our nightmares as kids and the furry little guy we all wanted as a pet that Furby ripped off! Robbie admits he used to confuse E.T.: The Extraterrestrial and Gremlins. J.G. tries to avoid getting the horny police called on him while talking about his early childhood crush Phoebe Cates. Robbie explains the use of cats in Jerry Goldsmith's score and pitches his prequel idea that'd call back to Phoebe Cates' eerie, spooky, chilling monologue about why she hates Christmas. We chat about Corey Feldman showing up dressed as a Christmas tree, the greatest movie scene to ever utilize Do You Hear What I Hear?, Gremlins' blending of horror and comedy, the holiday spirit in Gremlins, "That Guy" character actor Dick Miller as Murray Futterman, and the eternal question of whether Gremlins is racist, is Gremlins a critique of capitalism and/or consumerism, and more Then we switch gears to the completely absolutely off-the-wall, insanely zany sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Robbie and I talk about the meta/parody nature of the movie, the revenge of Dick Miller's Murray Futterman, Star Trek's Robert Picardo, John Glover as an eccentric billionaire modeled after Ted Turner and Donald Trump (who manages to be so insanely energetic and naive that the originally meant-to-be-villainous role become something else entirely), Joe Dante and his love of cartoons and animation (including the Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck short), Zach Galligan's character Billy Peltzer getting a sexually harassed by boss vis-a-vis an under-the-table foot job attempt, the two different "breaking the fourth wall" interruptions for the theatrical and VHS releases of the movie, Hammer Studios horror legend Christopher Lee as a mad scientist, a blink-and-you'll miss it cameo from John Addams of Gomez Addams fame, the cameos from pro wrestler Hulk Hogan and movie critic Leonard Maltin, how the satire of TV was so ahead of its time that some jokes don't even hit the same anymore, the movie's lampooning of technology, Gizmo the Mogwai getting the Baby Yoda treatment, Rambo and Gremlins 2, and more! We then end discussing the films of Joe Dante, the director behind both movies. We talk Burying the Ex, Innerspace, Matinee with John Goodman, Dante's two Masters of Horror episodes, the little seen TV movie The Second Civil War with Phil Hartman as the President of the United States, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and, of course, Small Soldiers.
Original Airdate 12/18/2014Jesse Starcher and Mark Radulich ring in the New Year with the alternative Christmas classic, Gremlins (and Gremlins 2).Gremlins is a 1984 American comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante from a screenplay written by Chris Columbus. It draws on legends of folkloric mischievous creatures that cause malfunctions—"gremlins"—in the British Royal Air Force going back to World War II and stars Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates, with Howie Mandel providing the voice of Gizmo, the main mogwai character. The story follows a young man who receives a strange creature as a pet, which then spawns other creatures who transform into small, destructive, aggressive monsters that all wreak havoc on a whole town on Christmas Eve.Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a 1990 American comedy horror film, and the sequel to the 1984 film Gremlins. It was directed by Joe Dante and written by Charles S. Haas, with creature designs by Rick Baker. Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Dick Miller, Jackie Joseph, and Keye Luke reprise their roles from the first film. New cast members include John Glover, Robert Prosky, Haviland Morris, Robert Picardo, and Christopher Lee; additionally, the film features Tony Randall providing the voice for one of the gremlins. The story continues the adventures of the creature Gizmo (once again voiced by Howie Mandel), who spawns numerous small monsters when wet. In the first film, Gizmo's offspring rampaged through a small fictional town. In Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Gizmo multiplies within a skyscraper in New York City. The new creatures thus pose a serious threat to the city should they be able to leave the building, and much of the story involves the human characters' efforts to prevent this disaster.

Edgar Allan Poe's shaved muse. First Time you saw the movie? Plot: TOP 51. It's partly responsible for the creation of the PG-13 rating.Truth be told, it's Steven Spielberg who is really responsible for the introduction of the PG-13 rating. Both Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which he directed, and Gremlins, which he executive produced, were rated PG upon their release, and subsequently criticized for not being kid-appropriate. To avoid being slapped with an R rating in the future, Spielberg suggested that the MPAA add a rating between PG and R. On August 10, 1984, Red Dawn became the first movie to be released with the new PG-13 rating. 2. Howie Mandel is the voice of Gizmo. It was the suggestion of voice actor Frank Welker, who voiced Stripe in Gremlins (and Fred on Scooby-Doo before that), that Howie Mandel be hired for the role. Phoebe Cates was a controversial casting choice.Given her sweet demeanor as Kate, it's hard to imagine that not everyone was on board with casting Cates. But her infamous topless scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High gave the studio pause about putting her in the lead. Kingston Falls and Hill Valley are one and the same.If the fictional town of Kingston Falls in Gremlins looks familiar, that's because it was filmed on the same set used for the town of Hill Valley in Back to the Future, which wasreleased a year later. At one point, Gizmo and Stripe were supposed to be the same creature. It was also at Spielberg's suggestion that Gizmo's role in the film grew. Originally, it's the cute little Mogwai pet himself who transforms into Stripe the Gremlin. But Spielberg knew that audiences would want to see as much of Gizmo as possible, so he withdrew the idea so that they would appear as totally separate characters. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING**Trey 3Chris 1.5Stephen 2.5Tucker 2 TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 Saving Private Ryan3 Ghostbusters4 Sandlot5 Color out of space Chris:1. sandlots2. Last week we watched a few new horror movies that were a bit unknown. So, we thought to pick some older movies that were known really well to make up for it. We watched and reviewed a classic Christmas movie that 80s kids grew up on. GREMLINS (1984) starring your lovable fury pal Gizmo voiced by the prolapse video sharing tiktok legend and 80s fame Howie Mandel. When a certain curious pets owner breaks a few very important rules things multiply into green creatures hellbent on mischief. Not to mention Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates and a ton of legends like Dick Miller. Since there's no way that we can watch that movie without watching the sequel. We decided to pair it with GREMLINS 2 The New Batch (1990). A movie that returns a lot of the stars from the first movie and throws in a bunch of legendary cameos and jokes to fill the movie. It's a bigger budget Gremlins in a Smart High Rise with some awfully green issues. 'Tis the season for holiday movies! And what better way to kick off this season than revisiting this Christmas-themed horror gem from the '80's directed by Joe Dante, starring Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates? The REAL stars are actually the creatures of the title of course - they can start as cute, furry little things known as Mogwai. But if you violate two of the three rules - don't let them get wet and don't feed them after midnight - then they can multiply and transform into much less pleasant scaly creatures who relish violence and mischief! :o What resulted was one of the bigger hits of the 1980's and just an endless parade of holiday nastiness....Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
