Police Academy och Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment avhandlas i veckans avsnitt. The old standard returns! It Happened One Year is once again looking at what aired on November 3rd in 1984, checking in over a year since exploring ABC's programming! This time, Sarah & Joe delve into the hard-boiled, sexy, action dramas that were Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, Airwolf, and Cover Up! Along the way, much discussion is made about Stacy Keach's mustache, how Oscar winner Ernest Borgnine found himself flying that helicopter, the tragedies and controversies of Cover Up, the poor adult audience subjected to early '80s television, and of course, the glorious return to It Happened One Year of show favorite, Bubba Smith.

Bubba Smith was a defensive end in college and pro football. He was a star player for the Michigan State Spartans, one of six players to have his jersey retired by the university. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988. Bubba was the number one pick in the NFL/AFL draft. He was the Baltimore Colts starting left defensive end for five seasons, playing in Super Bowl III and V. It was in the 5th Super Bowl that he won his only bowl ring. His outstanding playing ability earned him a double-team. You might remember him from the TV commercials for Miller Lite with Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive star Dick Butkus. Bubba was best known for his role as Moses Hightower in the “Police Academy” movies. He published his autobiography, “Kill, Bubba, Kill” in 1983.

DAN E. MOLDEA BEST-SELLING AUTHOR CHATS ABOUT THE NFL RIGGING FOOTBALL GAMES: AN INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS SPECIAL EDITION EXPOSE WITH YOUR HOST RAY SHASHO Hello and welcome to a special edition expose of Interviewing the Legends …I'm your host Ray Shasho. Dan E. Moldea is a best-selling author and investigative journalist who has reported on organized crime and political corruption since 1974. He is the author of books about the rise and fall of Jimmy Hoffa, the contract killing of an Ohio businessman, the Mafia's penetration of Hollywood, and its influence on professional football, as well as works about the murder of Senator Robert Kennedy, the O.J. Simpson case, and the suicide of White House Deputy Counsel Vincent Foster. Moldea has lectured about "The Mafia in America" at colleges and universities throughout the country and has appeared on numerous national and local radio and television programs. He was also featured in the 2004 film, The Hunting of the President. He is a former president of Washington Independent Writers (now American Independent Writers). I've been interested in Mr. Moldea since he appeared on The Pat Sajak show in 1989 to promote his book Interference. He claimed that virtually every NFL owner gambles on games and claimed that no fewer than 70 NFL games had been fixed up to that point. I became suspect of the NFL ever since Superbowl III when the 19 1 ⁄ 2 -point underdog American Football League (AFL) champion New York Jets defeated the National Football League (NFL) champion Baltimore Colts by a score of 16–7. Vince Lombardi went on record saying that the Jets had no chance of victory. The owner of the Colts (Caroll Rosenblum) was known to be a heavy gambler, and he died under mysterious circumstances in 1979. A large bet was placed in the City of Baltimore, and according to urban legend it was Rosenblum betting 3 million on the Jets. Colts Pro Bowl defensive end Bubba Smith blamed quarterback Earl Morrall for throwing the game. He appeared to be missing wide open receivers, and he threw for 71 yards and three INTs on 6-of-17 passing. The Jets went on to win by a score of 16-7, leading to the merger of the NFL and AFL, and securing the future of the Super Bowl. I personally have come to realize that THE NFL IS AS LEGIT AS THE WWE (WRESTING) Please welcome best-selling author, investigative journalist, and specialist on organized crime and political corruption investigations since 1974, Dan E. Moldea to Interviewing the Legends … PURCHASE 'Interference' How Organized Crime Influences Professional Football By DAN E. MOLDEA A shocking exposé of widespread corruption and mob influence throughout the National Football League—on the field, in the owners' boxes, and in the corporate suites. According to investigative journalist Dan E. Moldea, for decades the National Football League has had a strong and unspoken understanding with a dangerous organized crime. In his classic exposé, Interference, Moldea bares the dark, sordid underbelly of America's favorite professional team sport, revealing a nest of corruption that the league has largely ignored since its inception. Based on intensive research and in-depth interviews with coaches, players, mobsters, bookies, gamblers, referees, and league officials—including some of the sport's all-time greats—the author's shocking allegations suggest that the betting line is firmly in the hands of the mob, who occasionally manipulate the on-field action for maximum profit. Interference chronicles a long-standing history of gambling, drugs, and extortion, of point-shaving and game-fixing, and reveals the eye-opening truth about numerous gridiron contests where the final results were determined even before the kickoff. Moldea exposes the mob connections of many of the team owners and their startling complicity in illegal gambling operations, while showing how NFL internal security has managed to quash nearly every investigation into illegality and corruption within the professional football world before it could get off the ground. Provocative, disturbing, and controversial, Interference is a must-read for football fans and detractors alike, offering indisputable proof that what's really happening on the field, in the locker room, and behind the scenes is a whole different ball game. available amazon.com ALSO PURCHASE THESE INCREDIBLE TITLES BY DAN E. EPISODE SUMMARY Growing up Maya Washington didn't see her father as the world knew him to be—Michigan State University and Minnesota Viking football legend, Gene Washington—she knew him as dad. Based on Maya's award-winning documentary, https://amzn.to/34TcQvE (THROUGH THE BANKS OF THE RED CEDAR: My Father and the Team That Changed the Game )(Little A; January 1, 2022)follows her journey of uncovering just how difficult Gene's youth in segregated Texas was, and his unorthodox rise to college football stardom at MSU during the height of the Civil Rights movement. In this coming-of-age story, Maya narrates her father's experiences with racial discrimination as a Black athlete from the segregated South and how his perseverance contributed to her own limited privilege. Maya's life-altering experience of attending the funeral of Bubba Smith, her father's childhood friend and teammate, revealed to her how much the world of football shielded her from the harsh realities that her father had faced. After making the decision to learn more about her father's past, Maya set out to interview the family members, friends, coaches, and teammates at the center of Gene's story in order to learn more about the game that was so important to her father. As Maya's eyes are opened to the reality of her father's struggles with racism growing up in the south during Jim Crow, she also begins to reflect on her own experiences in her home city of Minneapolis, Minnesota and forms a deeper sense of gratitude for her parents' devotion to opening doors for her that were closed to them during their youth. Ultimately, https://amzn.to/34TcQvE (THROUGH THE BANKS OF THE RED CEDAR) expresses the growing bond between a father and his daughter, who comes to appreciate the game that changed both of their lives. Maya creates an inspiring depiction of Gene, not only as a star on the football field but also as a father to his three daughters. Maya expounds on controversial themes but expresses a sincere hope for unity. THE FOOTBALL HISTORY DUDE BACKGROUND https://sportshistorynetwork.com/podcasts/the-football-history-dude/ (The Football History Dude) is a show dedicated to teaching NFL fans about the rich history of the game we all know and love. I'm your host, Arnie Chapman, and I'm just a regular dude that loves football and is a nerd when it comes to learning about history. I created this show to share the gridiron knowledge nuggets I gain from researching various topics about the history of the National Football League. Each episode I welcome you to climb aboard my DeLorean to travel back in time to explore the yesteryear of the gridiron, and yes, that's a reference to the Back to the Future Movies.
Marking the beginning of Black History Month -- Today when a substantial majority of players in pro football and basketball and in the college games are African-American, it's hard to remember when things were Jim Crow different. Maya Washington's new book Through the Banks of the Red Cedar looks back to the 1960s when her father, football and track star Gene Washington was one of the few Blacks in Big 10 and NFL football. Playing a key role at Michigan State University and in pro football was a teammate, then competitor, all-time all-star defensive lineman Bubba Smith.

By any other standard, it was a season of triumph. Eleven regular season wins, two more in the playoffs, and then the crowning glory of victory in Super Bowl V. But for the 1970 Baltimore Colts, the victory remained in the shadow of a devastating defeat - their crushing upset loss to the Jets two years earlier in Super Bowl III. America's Game relives the Colts bittersweet season from their regular-season rematch against the Jets, through the first year of a merged NFL, to the comedy of errors that was Super Bowl V. As told by men who lived it - Bubba Smith, Bill Curry, and Mike Curtis - the story of the 1970 Baltimore Colts offers a rare glimpse into the proud heart of a champion. For some, it was a moment of sweet redemption. For others, it was a reminder of what could have been.

We're joined by podcasting legend (and he does a bit of acting and writing as well) David Reed, who has very kindly chosen the second part of everyone's favourite franchise: POLICE ACADEMY 2: THEIR FIRST ASSIGNMENT. Is it as good as we all remember? Who knows, it might be better.
The gangbusters first episode of It Happened One Year has finally arrived! Sarah and Joe are kicking off their grand 1994 dissection with one of its most memorable figures, A.C. Cowlings - Former NFL defender turned accomplice in the O.J. Simpson saga! There is plenty to chew over, from A.C.'s football days to his brief acting career to his even briefer dabbling in aerobics. Between the many subsequent locations of the famed Ford Bronco to guest appearances by Bubba Smith and Marcus Allen, IHOY sheds plenty of light on one of the most widely known yet least heard from members of the '94 roll call. As a bonus, the hosts also discuss why they happened upon 1994 for this show and unearth a test recording that validates this decision. The Bizarro World of IHOY:1917 is an adventure unto itself. Who even was Mata Hari, anyway?!
Here we go again! Police Academy 4 (released April 3rd, 1987) is the same as Police Academy 3, which, in itself, was basically the same as Police Academy 1. This time they're training civilians, pulling pranks, and blurring the line between running jokes and lazy writing. Listen in as we really try and keep the energy up while talking about this exhausting franchise. If you want a rational, unbiased opinion on this film, mosey on over to one of the 500,000 other movie review podcasts begging you for downloads. This is not it. Be forewarned, this is Jake's third favorite film of all time, any genre. . . maybe even higher now that I type this out. . . oh, I guess now would be a good time to admit that I (Jake) have to write these dumb descriptions in the third person. There was only one person who would endure Jake bouncing up and down in his chair as his eyes fling apart like atoms in the Hadron Collider, his beautiful, patient, very patient wife: Ciara. That's right, you have begged and pleaded and the pulchritudinous prodigal spouse returns. Gremlins 2: The New Batch came out in 1990, but instead of its deserved thunderous applause, the more fitting sound effect would be a wet fart. Simply put, this movie may have been ahead of its time. Irreverent, fourth wall breaking, absurdist films were not really mainstream by that point. Jake forgot to mention this on the episode, but do you think Deadpool would exist without Gremlins 2? Also, when Disney inevitably obtains Warner Brothers, let's make that crossover happen. Directed by Joe Dante (The Howling), who would only come back to the franchise with full creative control. Creature effects by Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London), who is a gilded god of gore and grossout. Zach Galligan returns as Billy Peltzer and Phoebe Cates reprises her role as Kate Beringer. Their old pal, Murray Futterman, played by Dick Miller, comes to visit them in the big city, from ol' Kingston Falls. John Glover plays industrialist Daniel Clamp. Robert J. Prosky plays Grandpa Fred. Robert Picardo plays head of security, Forster. Finally, the late and great Sir Christopher Lee Plays Dr. Cushing Catheter. The film also features cameos by Hulk Hogan, Dick Butkus, Bubba Smith, Rick Ducommun, Leonard Maltrin, and the indomitable John Astin, who many will remember as Gomez Addams. Find out about deleted scense, production, conception, literary references, easter eggs, basically everything that Jake has learned from worshiping this film for nearly 30 years, all in one hour! On this episode of Jon’s PostLife Crisis, I interview Maya Washington: creator, producer, director, and person extraordinaire who made the film “Through The Banks Of the Red Cedar,” which will be shown on the Big Ten Network on November 10th at 7:00 PM central. The film is about her father, Gene Washington, who played for the Michigan State Spartans from 1964-1966, and then was drafted into the NFL by the Minnesota Vikings. Gene Washington was born and raised in a small town, La Porte, Texas, near Houston. His high school was segregated. He could not even attend a college in Texas or in the South because of racism. Michigan State’s coach, Duffy Daugherty, had a recruiting network for black athletes across the South. He contacted Bubba Smith, who recommended he grab Gene Washington. Smith, Washington, George Webster, and Clinton Jones were all drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft with Smith going #1, Jones #2, Webster #5, and Washington #8. Why is this important? It’s relevant to NOW as our nation deals with racial inequality. It’s important to know where we came from and where we’re going. And it’s kind of a shame that Duffy Daugherty doesn’t get much credit, as he should, for racial integration of college football. Maya and I talk about: Her father’s culture shock in moving to East Lansing, Michigan, from Texas. The famous 1966 Spartan team that tied Notre Dame 10-10 How Duffy Daugherty is largely forgotten as a coach, especially despite that he had 20 black players on his roster YEARS BEFORE PAUL BEAR BRYANT AT ALABAMA so stop giving so much credit to the 1970 USC-Alabama game The revisionist history myth that Bryant sent players to Daugherty Why it took her a decade to make the film What it was like doing a film with her father Her reflections on name, image, likeness, and that she had to license footage of her father but her father will never see a dime of that money WATCH THE FILM ON BTN Big Ten Network on November 10th at 7:00 PM central. THROUGH THE BANKS OF THE RED CEDAR There will be a quiz! (Not really, but it could be fun..... ) Get My Book! My book about recovering from a widowmaker heart attack and brain injury - Been Dead, Never Been To Europe - is available on Amazon! Book Description Jon Johnston was an active, healthy adult when he dropped dead suddenly of a widowmaker heart attack. He was not expected to live, after being dead for more than 20 minutes, but if he did survive, his brain would forever be damaged due to oxygen deprivation.Alternating between humor, sadness, and anger at his body’s betrayal, Jon takes us with him as he puts his life back together. At the beginning, he sees the trauma as a minor inconvenience and expects a speedy recovery. As he realizes the damage to his heart is permanent, he is hit with another setback when he is diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, leaving him with memory loss, debilitating headaches, and a loss of identity. Tasks that had been trivial had become onerous endeavors, and his life became an unexpected challenge. Been Dead, Never Been to Europe offers a real-life view of what it takes to rebuild after a devastating event, to accept an unexpected present and future, and to discover a new identity. Been Dead, Never Been to Europe will appeal to readers who seek memoirs of resilience, and to those whose own lives have been affected by unexpected trauma. Learn more about your ad choices. Phil Hart earned master's and Ph.D. degrees in sociology in 1970 and 1974 respectively from MSU's College of Social Science. Hart has dedicated his career to studying race in America through the lenses of sociology, urban planning, and social justice. He's authored more than 100 books and articles on race in America and has served as a leader both on campus and around the country on race-related initiatives. Hart talks about his time as a student activist on campus and offers his perspective on the challenges our nation is facing today. “When I first arrived at MSU in the fall of 66, there was a lot of excitement about football. It was Bubba Smith and Duffy Daugherty. That was the center of attention. As we got to April 4th, 1968 with the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr, the mood changed totally, and I became very active in campus life. I was one of the founders of the Black Student Alliance that began putting pressure on the university to respond to the racial injustice and the urban protest that was going on starting after the death of Martin Luther King Jr.”Hart talks about how he evolved as a student leader and points out that MSU opened the nation's first department of urban affairs. He was instrumental in establishing an urban experiment station at MSU.He senses a difference in the country's mood following the killing of George Floyd “because the protests are more multiracial and multicultural, and the true awakening is happening in cities and towns around the world like London and Berlin.“Also, what I think about is one of the things that Martin Luther King spoke about. He talked about the arc of history. He said, ‘The arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice.' And I think the thing that I see different now from, say 1968, is that I think the arc of history is now bending towards justice. As you think about where all of this is leading today, we're obviously in the midst of a pandemic. I've been on lockdown in my house since March 11th. That plus the collapse of the economy because of our response to the pandemic and then the urban unrest is different than 1968 in that we've got the pandemic laid over these other events. Non-Black people are waking up to the plight that we have been experiencing as Black people in America since we got here in 1619 in a history of racial oppression, racism, and white supremacy, frankly.”Hart writes and speaks about solutions-oriented approaches to social injustice. He explains what he means by “solutions-oriented” and shares his views on reparations.“What we need are solutions for the United States of America to address racism, the question of diversity and inclusion, and wealth creation on the part of Black Americans.” Hart shares his “broad three-pronged approach that I believe are possible solutions moving forward that address social justice and wealth creation. That includes reparations, universities' responsibility, and corporations' responsibility.”Hart says “in many ways, Michigan State University has been ahead of the curve in addressing racism. It was 50 years ago that Clifton Wharton became the president of MSU, the first African American president of a major predominantly white public research university. “And I would expect that Michigan State, among not only land grant universities but universities at large, would be in the lead in terms of addressing these issues. And Michigan State has a significant population of Black students. Even when I was there, and that was 1970, 1974, the number of Black students that we had at MSU exceeded the number of Black students at several historically Black colleges and universities. Michigan State's traditionally been in the lead in terms of issues that relate to Black Americans.”He shares his views on how he would define both White and Black fragility and on how we can all help make a difference in our own communities.“Racism is a virus. In our local communities we can be anti-racist and take proactive steps to make sure that racism is eliminated. COVID-1619 is a vaccine that is needed to fight racism. But before we find a vaccine, just like before we find a vaccine for COVID-19, we can take steps. Wear a mask. Practice social distancing. If all of us in our local communities take an anti-racist stance and stop using skin color as a way to say whether someone is good or bad or that we're going to treat them in a certain way, that's a good first step to take.”MSU Today airs every Sunday morning on 105.1 FM, AM 870, and your smart speaker and connected devices.

http://www.sowhatdoyouthink.buzzsprout.comIn this episode of the podcast we have a discussion on why Jesus ask so many questions in the Bible. (307 questions to be exact).
http://www.sowhatdoyouthink.buzzsprout.comIn this episode of the podcast I sit down with Bubba Smith. In this study of the Bible on Mark 4 and 5 the disciples wondered if Jesus cared in the middle of a literal storm. We also can apply this to our circumstances in our life. Do they realize who is really in their midst? Can they grasp the power and omnipotence of God? If we really could do that would we worry or fret over anything in our life?
http://sowhatdoyouthink.buzzsprout.comIn this episode of the podcast I am with my step-father, Bubba. Are you a party planner who always misses the party? How can we get perspective, simplify our lives? We have been forced to during this coronavirus quarantine. Maybe we needed a little reminder to slow down, keep things simple and make some time to sit at Jesus' feet.

Author Michael Hurd joins the Texas Sports Hall of Fame Podcast to discuss his book Thursday Night Lights: The Story of Black High School in Texas, a book that celebrates the rich history of Prairie View Interscholastic League (PVIL) football -- a league that produced many pro and college football stars including Dick "Night Train" Lane, Bubba Smith, and Ken Houston. The PVIL stood as the governing body for black schools in Texas throughout the decades of segregation. The league provided a home for the biggest high school event in America in its heyday, the annual Turkey Day Classic between Houston Yates and Houston Wheatley. Hurd shares with us the exciting history of PVIL football programs from the hardscrabble days of the 1940s when Joe Washington started his high school’s program while still a high school student in Rosenberg, Texas, and through the glory years in the 1960s when Charlton Pollard coach Willie Ray Smith, Sr. and Hebert coach Clifford Ozen seemed to produce football star after football star through their rivalry in Beaumont, Texas. Joe Washington’s son -- Joe Washington Jr. – wound up being the fourth-overall pick in the 1976 NFL draft. Three sons of Willie Ray Smith, Sr. were all major recruits coming out of high school, most notably future NFL legend Bubba Smith. Hurd also conveys the excitement of Kansas City Chiefs star Otis Taylor showing off his new Ford Thunderbird to Hurd and his schoolmates as well as the tremendous athletic ability and ultimately tragic story of Eldridge Dickey, a man who earned the nickname, “The Lord’s Prayer” for his prayers before games and his accomplishments at quarterback. This episode Texas Sports Hall of Fame Podcast is presented by the Hampton Inn Waco. The show is written and produced by host Jackson Michael, author of The Game Before the Money: Voices of the Men Who Built the NFL.
Maya Washington is a filmmaker (writer/director/producer), actress, writer, poet, Creative Director, and arts educator. She received a BA in Dramatic Arts from the University of Southern California and an MFA in Creative Writing from Hamline University. Her work has garnered awards from Jerome Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, Minnesota Film and Television, and others.Maya is dedicated to projects that have a sense of “purpose” in the world, selecting stories that illuminate some aspect of the human experience that is untold, rarely seen, or might benefit from new approaches to issues of diversity and inclusion, primarily in America. On this podcast we discuss her film Through the Banks of the Red Cedar! The story unfolds through the eyes of Maya Washington, Gene's youngest daughter, as she uncovers her father's journey and the impact of this legacy on the present generation. Maya traces her father's footsteps from the segregated South to the North, over the course of a modern football season. As she uncovers both the triumphs and defeats of her father's team, she develops a newly formed appreciation for the game and a deeper connection to her father, just in time to witness MSU Spartan Football team ascend to national prominence 50 years later. The racial demographics seen on the field today are due in large part to Hall of Fame coach Duffy Daugherty's innovative approach to recruiting African American men from the South to MSU in the 1960s, known as the “Underground Railroad” of college football. The success of MSU's 1965 and 1966 back-to-back Big Ten and National Champion teams forces America to re-think prejudices that previously kept African American players from earning scholarships or starting positions. The story delves into the triumphs and defeats of Daugherty's integrated team as they finish the season with the historic 1966 "Game of the Century," a 10-10 tie against Notre Dame. Teammates Gene Washington, Bubba Smith , Clinton Jones, and George Webster make history as first round picks in the 1967 draft. Gene Washington and Clinton Jones bring momentum to the Minnesota Vikings, playing in the 1969 Super Bowl alongside legendary teammates Joe Kapp, Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall, John Henderson, Oscar Reed, Dave Osborn and Mick Tingelhoff. Maya's interviews with former players recall the highlights of the Minnesota Vikings' "Purple People Eater" years, as well as the racial discrimination black players faced in the league, speaking to the overall impact African American pioneers had on players' rights, including free agency and the right to negotiate salaries. God started him with just one dollar much in the same way God distributed five loaves and two fishes to feed five thousand people.
This week's Throwback Thursday episode we review the 1984 comedy classic Police Academy! Starring Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall, G.W Bailey, Bubba Smith, Michael Winslow, and George Gaynes.
http://sowhatdoyouthink.buzzsprout.comWelcome to Season 2 of "So, What do you think? Yah, we made it! In episode 1 of this podcast we talk about praying boldly. It isn't because of us we can pray boldly but because of Jesus Christ. We are excited to dive in this year and learn new things about God and the Bible.
In this episode of the podcast we talk about Hope. In celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ...He is the one true Hope. My step-father speaks hope into me and many others and we wanted to share this with you also. We pray for you this Christmas season, that you too would have hope in Jesus Christ.http://sowhatdoyouthink.buzzsprout.com
In this podcast I talk with Bubba Smith about forgiveness. Not only forgiveness for those who hurt us but forgiveness for those we need to ask for forgiveness. God ask us to forgive as He forgives us. Have you ever wanted to get revenge? I think we all have but God says if they get what they deserve, shouldn't you as well? That statement will humble you really quick.http://sowhatdoyouthink.buzzsprout.com
When ask his favorite disciple, my stepfather doesn't hesitate...it's John. He tells us why in the episode. Bubba, my stepfather always leads us to love which what Jesus is...He is love. http://sowhatdoyouthink.buzzsprout.com
http://sowhatdoyouthink.buzzsprout.comIn this episode I talk with my step-father about God's heart. He is the perfect example of how you can grow and learn at any age. He is striving to see people the way God sees people. God always sees the heart, not our actions. I love that God sees my heart and not my actions and so thankful that maybe I can also learn to see people's heart.
Brose and James join forces to chat the final Police Academy film ever made! What...? There's one more after this? Why? Brose and James join forces to chat the penultimate Police Academy film ever made; City Under Siege. Much like Assignment Miami Beach, a trimmer more streamlined cast go head to head with a mysterious villain. Bubba Smith, Marion Ramsay, Leslie Easterbrook, Michael Winslow, Matt McCoy and David Graf return to represent George Gaynes' Lassard with the contstant interference of G.W. Bailey and Lance Kinsey's Harris and Proctor! Bruce Mahler returns as Fackler (why?!?!) and Kenneth Mars pops up as the mayor! Sit back and enjoy the last watchable Police Academy film ever made!
In Part Five of Seven, Brose and James tackle a trip to Florida with Police Academy 5 Assignment Miami Beach! The one film in the series where George Gaynes gets to star, along side Matt McCoy as his nephew replacing Steve Guttengberg. A refined list of Academy graduates makes for a slicker film too; Bubba Smith, Michael Winslow, David Graf, Marion Ramsay and Leslie Easterbrook fill out Lassard's team with GW Bailey and Lance Kinsey along attesting to spoil the occasion. Rene Auberjonois is great as the villian, revelling in all the slapstick buffoonery!
As mentioned previously this film is the gold standard for Brose... will his heart be broken? Will James enjoy it? Which of the Academy Graduates return and who is left behind? Will we see Steve 'the Cute' Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, Michael Winslow, David Graf, Leslie Easterbrook, Marion Ramsay? And how, exactly, does Sharon Stone fit? Find out this week on ChatFlix!
This week Brose and James follow up Police Academy 2 with... you got it! Police Academy 3: Back in Training! Join us as we chat a new rag tag bunch of misfits join the Academy to be trained by the original rag tag bunch of misfits! We see the return of Steve Guttenberg, Bubba Smith, Michael Winslow, Marion Ramsay, George Gaynes, David Graf, Leslie Easterbrook, Lance Kinsey and for no apparent reason, Bruce Mahler as Fackler...
Brose and James are trained and ready for their first assignment! They tackle (berry) the second instalment in the Police Academy series Police Academy: Their First Assignment. How has their esteem for Steve Guttenberg changed since the first film? How much screen time will Bubba Smith, Marion Ramsay, Colleen Camp and Julie Brown actually get? What new sound effects will Michale Winslow introduce? Will David Graf shoot something out of a tree and why is Bruce Mahler even in this film? With Art Metrano replacing GW Bailey, the introduction of Lance Kinsey as Proctor and Howard Hesseman appears as George Gaynes' Lassard's brother!
The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk 314: John Calipari & Michael Lombardi - Building & Sustaining A Culture Of Excellence Full show notes found at www.LearningLeader.com John Calipari has been the head coach of the University of Kentucky basketball team since 2009, with whom he won the NCAA Championship in 2012. He has been named Naismith College Coach of the Year three times (in 1996, 2008 and 2015), and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015. Calipari has coached Kentucky to four Final Fours, in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015. Michael Lombardi was an assistant to the coaching staff of the New England Patriots (until 2016) and is a former analyst for the NFL Network and sportswriter at NFL.com. Lombardi also previously served as an NFL executive with the San Francisco 49ers working withBill Walsh, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, and Oakland Raiders working with Al Davis. This was recorded in front of an audience at an event called the NCAA Final Four Coaching Consortium. The people in the audience were college basketball coaches and athletic directors. Notes: The "Players First" credo: "When I worked for Larry Brown he told me, if you care about the kids and you really care, you'll always have a job." "Larry was a coaches coach, but a players coach, who wasn't afraid to coach. Right now, we're moving in a direction where we're afraid to coach. Correcting in real time is so important." "Everyone said the 1 and done rule would ruin college basketball, they wanted to replace me." "If you're about your kids, whatever happens good for them, will not be a negative for you. It's about them first. It's about us second. If you want them to be servant leaders, they have to see it in you." "If they don't see you getting involved in the community, they won't get involved in the community." Players first is not just them playing basketball, it's everything. "We all should be reading. The more curious you are, the more curious your players will be. Read books, give your players books to read." Lombardi -- Coach Walsh was all about the players, he was the first to go on fishing tournaments with players. He bought Bubba Smith a big tv, he made Michael sit and eat all meals with him. Bill Walsh had a book club in San Francisco Bill Belichick is all about the history of the game and the history of our country. When you go in the cafeteria and you see the great players on the wall, he expects you to know the history and the culture of your team. You should ask all coaches, "who assigns the jersey numbers?" The coach should assign those numbers, not the equipment manager. Your player needs to know the history of that number. Calipari -- Process on getting guys to want to play as a team: It all starts in recruiting. "If you promise every kid 25 shots, good luck. Because at some point, someone will be upset. If the relationship starts with a lie, you'll never recover." "Whatever you do here is earned. If you're good enough you'll start, but you'll decide that." "If you want them to be great teammates it starts immediately when you meet them. They have to earn it." You can't oversell and under deliver. People will not buy in to that. "Pat Riley gave me one of the best compliments ever, he said, 'Your players are some of the best teammates in the NBA.'" Marcus Camby -- "I said, what position do you want to play?" he said, "Shooting guard." I said, "Okay, but we do post up our shooting guards a lot." Lombardi -- Putting together a great roster -- Roster construction: The law of 3's Whenever you take over a team you have three groups of people One -- They'll do anything you want them to do Two -- They're unsure Three -- They are never happy Focus on the people in group one and you'll win the whole team. The Four areas of leadership Command of self -- Must be discipline Command of plan Command of meaning/message Command of trust -- You cannot lie. If you lie, you'll lose the player forever Calipari -- Took over UMass -- Terrible team at the time When he left, he got advice from a business man (Pat Nardelli) "You can a have bad deal with good people. Stuff happens. But you can never have a good deal with bad people." "The reason I've had success, I've had the best staffs. Top to bottom. When you get your job, you surround yourself with great people." "Assistant coaches must be able to work together. They are each other's PR machine. Each guy needs to promote the other guy." Was on football field with Bill Parcells -- Could coach all 22 guys on a football field. He had incredible vision. The importance of mentors in your career-- Calipari "Who's your kitchen cabinet? Who do you go to when things aren't going well?" Who can you listen to? Ken Blanchard - The One Minute Manager Decision making -- you need to run it by someone. Don't make big time decisions when you're still emotional. "I'll take the job the grass is greener.... Well you have to cut the grass on both sides." You need people to say, "Stop. Tell me what you're thinking..." Lombardi -- Meeting with George Raveling "This man reads more than any human being alive." Take an hour a day to read Calipari -- Look at adversity as a challenge and failure as a learning opportunity "How does someone look when things aren't going well? That's what I need to know." "The best moments are when things aren't going well. Give me four games in a row when you lose... Now, I want to see what kind of person are you?" You're on the stage by yourself, you're looking for friends." "You have issues? People have their own issues. They aren't worried about you." It's about "How do I get restarted? What's my next step? Ask an AD, how can I be better?" "When you get fired, make amends with the people who fired you. The next job you want? They're going to call those people who fired you." Be a 'pay it forward' person. The opportunities we have to change lives... And the ripples it causes from it. Lombardi -- The Obstacle Is The Way How to bounce back when you're wrong? When you get a new job, figure out why you got the job and why the person before you got fired. Take the time to understand the mistakes made. "The only way you'll correct them is to learn them." There's two kind of jobs: Jobs you can grow from and jobs you can make a difference in. Al Davis would ask Mike -- "Do you know why we won today?" He wanted to know why the team won and lost and put it on paper. Bill Belichick does an autopsy after every game (win or lose). You need to understand why the outcome happened (good or bad). Take stock of your career every single day. Every obstacle needs to be used to your advantage. Calipari -- "I will not coach if I'm cheating these kids." He signed a lifetime contact with Kentucky "My leverage has always been the job I've done." Why talk to other teams? "I want to help someone I know. A player or another coach. The whole thing we do is about relationships." If LeBron James calls you and asks you to coach his team, what will you say? "I'm not doing it. Pat Riley said Coach Cal coaches and corrects in real time during a game. He takes a guy out, corrects, puts him back in. You can't do that in the NBA." Lombardi -- At college pro days Belichick observed Coach Cal during a game... Watching him coach "It was so impressive, Belichick was admiring how much Cal was coaching." What skills should we develop? The commonalities among the most successful coaches: Curious minds -- not a single playbook. The sport moves. Adapt. They are about other people -- Servant leaders Wired and driven to work - they love practice more than the games Smart -- Lombardi -- Divergent in thought. Figure out what's needed with that team. Passion. "The greatest reward for winning is the opportunity to do it more."
This week Brose and James report for basic training as they discuss the first of 7 Police Academy films! Steve Guttenberg, Michael Winslow, Bubba Smith, Marion Ramsey, George Gaynes, Kim Catrall, GW Bailey and David Graf all assemble for the ChatFlix treatment! Join us each week to see how this comedy series holds up (NB. We are not looking forward to Mission to Moscow!)
Attention cadets! Your assignment: POLICE ACADEMY, the 1984 comedy starring Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrell and the guy who makes noises with his mouth! Also featuring G.W. Bailey, Bubba Smith, this movie spawned seven sequels, which should be a prosecutable offense under the law. We loved this movie as when we were juvenile civilians, but how does it hold up now? Episode Notes Gregory Reed is an engineer that’s spent decades in the practice of Entertainment Law. Reed’s patience and understanding for systems led to his work into Entertainment Law. In the 1970’s relationships with fellow Michigan State Spartans (like Bubba Smith and more) created the opportunity to represent athletes. He soon wrote a book that has been cited and used as the standard for negotiating all athlete contracts. Today Attorney Reed is most known for his career in protecting the likeness and image of celebrities. His work with the honorable Rosa Parks is internationally recognized. He was also the exclusive Attorney for many Black theater companies, Kronk Boxing (RIP Emmanuel Stewart), Anita Baker, and many more acts. We discuss so much of his work into creating efforts outside of law alone. Today he is preparing for his Cruise’IN the D Car Expo (August 17 – 19, 2018), and Classic Women Whips & Wheels (Sat July 7, 2018). Get your head out of a horse's *** and join us as we discuss former President William Jefferson Clinton's favorite film, the 1984 classic, "Police Academy." The movie made $146M at the box office and spawned six sequels as well as a short-lived TV series. It's only a matter of time before J.J. Abrams or one of the Nolan brothers makes a gritty reboot or prequel. Steve Guttenberg plays Cadet Carey Mahoney, a smart aleck who's forced to join the police academy rather than face jail time for criminal destruction of property. Much to his surprise, good ol' Mahoney quickly falls in love with one of his fellow cadets and ends up deciding that he actually wants to be a cop. David Graf plays Cadet Tackleberry, a trigger-happy maniac. In hindsight, Tackleberry's shoot-first, ask-questions-later policy is no longer the fount of comedic gold it was once considered. Bubba Smith plays Cadet Hightower, a colossal florist-turned-cop who doesn't take kindly to racist remarks. Hightower's performance is full of zany strongman antics, including: smashing over brick wall, overturning a cop car and knocking a guy out with one punch. Michael Winslow plays Larvell Jones, a human sound effects machine who, in retrospect, seems like he needs some serious mental help to overcome his severe neuropsychiatric disorder. Kim Cattrall of "Sex and the City" fame plays Cadet Karen Thompson, a rich girl whose character is never really fleshed out, but she is thrown into the mix to be Mahoney's love/flesh interest. Blue Thunder is a spinoff of a popular action film from the previous year about a high-tech police helicopter which is used to fight crime in Los Angeles. The series stared James Farentino as the lead, American football legends Dick Butkus and Bubba Smith as, essentially, themselves, and a pre-SNL Dana Carvey as the young computer-wiz.
