Discussion Kyle sits down with Robert Cole over Zoom to discuss the forthcoming Strathmore Theatre Players production of The Addams Family Musical at the Hope Church running March 21st through April 5th with a special subtitled production on March 29th. Robert Cole directs and Kyle discusses the labour of direction along with the particular difficulties of putting up a large scale musical in a small town in the middle of the winter. Tickets: https://thevaultonline.ca/collections/strathmore-theatre-players-guild About the Show: THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family. Featuring an original story complete with every father's nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn't upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before– keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on that fateful night when they host a dinner for Wednesday's “normal” boyfriend and his parents. Join the extended Family to watch and laugh as Chaos reigns supreme!
What better way to start off the new year than with chaos only rivaled by that of the real world? Gremlins 2: The New Batch is one of the most anarchist sequels to ever exist, and Max, Liz, and Host Spencer try to parse through this movie with enough decorum to make Brainy Gremlin proud. As is the running joke in this episode, THIS. MOVIE. HAS. EVERYTHING: A 24 hour yogurt shop, Science Twins, Gomez Addams trying to fix a water fountain, a vegetable gremlin, and an opening sequence literally taken from Superman IV... and that is not even 10% of the zaniness.
A provocative, irreverent biography of Anton Szandor LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan, BORN WITH A TAIL chronicles a time when Americans welcomed a macabre showman into their living rooms via The Tonight Show, before a ginned-up hysteria known as the Satanic Panic would put a target on his shiny, shaven head. When Anton LaVey burst onto the San Francisco scene right before the Summer of Love, he parlayed his eerie obsessions into a philosophy and lifestyle that capitalized on a New Age rage. With his signature cape, horn-studded hood, and Ming the Merciless beard, LaVey was a media-savvy provocateur who took what he did seriously, but was always in on the joke. From a spooky old house on an otherwise unremarkable street, he founded the Church of Satan, where young women squirmed nude on the mantel of his ritual chamber as he delivered a doctrine of self-deification and indulgence that combined the writings of Ayn Rand, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Aleister Crowley with the pulpy fictions of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard.Later, his bestselling book The Satanic Bible (still in print since 1969) struck an ominous chord with both the hip and the alienated-the fringe dwellers who were goth before there were goths. But LaVey's influence could be felt far beyond his flock, namely in the nightmarish and supernatural entertainment that dominated pop culture in the 1970s and continues to make an impact today. He was a musical prodigy who attracted a cluster of stars into his orbit, including Jayne Mansfield and Sammy Davis Jr. But living like a real-life Gomez Addams, complete with a full-grown pet lion, came at an awful price. Bump in the road? Indeed. Meet Pat Wetzel. Pat is a graduate from the University of Pennsylvania and Wharton Business School. She began her professional life working in the finance industry in New York City. We talk about some of that in this episode of Unstoppable Mindset and we even get Pat's take on today's economy. Pat's life changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with a serious neurological disease myasthenia gravis. She went through a divorce and eventually reassessed her entire life. Talk about being unstoppable, to sum it up, Pat decided to continue living. She is one of the relatively few who was diagnosed but fully survived and moved on from her disease. Along the way she discovered soaring-flying high in motorless airplanes. Soaring she began to do not only in airplanes, but with the rest of her life. I think you will be totally inspired by Pat's story. Four years ago she began the Bump In The Road podcast and just this year she published her first book called, you guessed it, Bump In The Road. Check out Pat Wetzel's story on our episode this time and I hope you will pick up her book as well as listening to her podcast, after you listen to this one of course. About the Guest: Pat Wetzel, a graduate from the University of Pennsylvania and Wharton Business School, embarked on her adult journey in the bustling city of New York. Little did she know that her path would take a dramatic turn, when she was diagnosed with a serious neurological disease myasthenia gravis. A divorce and the resulting chaos forced her to reimagine her life. A chance encounter with the sport of soaring-flying high tech motorless airplanes cross country-became the portal to unexpected adventure, leading her to soar to new heights, both metaphorically and literally. Her adventures in the air became the back drop for conquering challenges, finding courage and connecting with a greater natural world. Through her experiences, Pat Wetzel has emerged not only as an individual who is wise, but as a podcaster and author with a profound message to share. In "Bump In the Road: 15 Stories of Courage, Hope, and Resilience," she channels her unique perspective, weaving together tales of human strength and triumph. The stories, based on her weekly podcast Bump In The Road, inspire others to navigate life's bumps with hope and to find courage in the face of uncertainty. In this book, Pat's story and the story of her 15 guests is a testament to the unwavering power of the human spirit and a reminder that even amidst the bumps in the road, our potential for growth knows no bounds. ** ** Ways to connect with Pat: Website: BumpInTheRoad.us Instagram: Instagram.com/BumpInTheRoad.us Twitter: Twitter.com/CancerRoadTrip Facebook: Facebook.com/BumpInTheRD Linked in: https://www.linkedin.com/in/patwetzel/ About the Host: Michael Hingson is a New York Times best-selling author, international lecturer, and Chief Vision Officer for accessiBe. Michael Hingson ** 01:21 Well, Howdy, and welcome to another episode of unstoppable mindset. I am your host, Michael Hinkson. I really am glad that you're here with us today. And today, we're going to chat with Pat Wetzel. Pat is an interesting person by any standard. She is a graduate of University of Pennsylvania and the Wharton School of Business, I'm jealous, but that's okay. She then started out working in New York. And we'll have to have a discussion about best places to buy bagels in New York. But she had a diagnosis that changed her whole life and her whole career. I'm going to leave it to her to talk more about that. And everything that follows. She is also a podcaster. She has a podcast called a bump in the road. And we'll I'm sure talk about that in the course of the day. And she's an author of a book. And guess what the book is entitled bump in the road. Anyway, Pat, welcome to unstoppable mindset. We're really glad you're here. Thank you. Nice to be here. So tell me a little bit about the early Pat growing up and all that sort of stuff. Pat Wetzel ** 02:28 Oh, early Pat. Let's see, I grew up in northern New Jersey in a town called Upper Saddle River. And it was just beautiful countryside as a kid, or as a teenager, of course, you hated it, because the only thing to do was play sports and go to school. But actually, it was really a very idyllic, my family settled deal is spent a lot of time in Europe, which gave me a rather different perspective on the world. From the time I was very young. I knew it was a big world, there were different people and cultures. And I really loved that. And I think that influence the remainder of my life in that I enjoy going into different places. And I think it also gave me a tolerance not just for differences in people and culture, but for a little bit of adventure and risk. Went to school started off in the bond market in New York back in the 80s, which was a very cool time to be in the bond market. But I received a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, which is a very rare neurologic disease. And it causes weakness in voluntary muscles, which includes your eyes, your mouth, your tongue, the ability to breathe or walk. So it was pretty devastating. It really took my life in a direction I did not anticipate. Not a lot of upside there. But one of the good things that did come out of it was that it gave me a time to pause and get out of the rat race craze, super competitive business world. And I think I look at who I was, which really ended up more from my perspective, was kind of this from as opposed to the eat what you kill side of the spectrum, which is a little bit more market oriented. Michael Hingson ** 04:14 So well tell me more about that. So what did you do? Pat Wetzel ** 04:20 Really, it was survival, quite honestly. I was up in New Haven, in New Haven area. I had a thymectomy at Yale, which is where they remove your thymus, they think they're not even sure that it somehow influences the course of your disease. And indeed, there are some precancerous lesions there. So it was a it was a good move the whole way around. Initially, you're on all these drugs and you're having to titrate these drugs. And it's a matter of at first just not knowing if you're going to live about a third of the people die about a third of the people remain seriously disabled, and about a third go on in life and I was luckily in the latter group. Ah,So okay, we'll tired and things, but it's nothing major, and I'm no longer on any medication. But it um, it is quite life changing, to say the least. Yeah, I would, I would think that it would be Michael Hingson ** 05:14 pulling, removing your thymus and just all of the various things that go along with that it has to be not a very fun thing, do you still go get checkups on any kind of regular basis? Pat Wetzel ** 05:26 No, interestingly, when I started flying, fast forward a decade or so, when I started flying,I was having full time trading my drugs, and one of the problems is having too much in your system gives you the same symptoms as having too little. So you never know you're ahead or behind. So I decided to start weaning myself off my drugs. I did this without medical supervision, I do not recommend anybody do it, no doctor would have taken the risk. But I decided to do it. And indeed, it worked. I might get a little tired or whatnot, I can manage that. And that was really the end of my interface with the medical establishment for that period of my life. Wow. Well, so. So let's go back. So you started in the bond market in the 1980s. Of course, we had the recession in the 1980s, and all the economic things. So typically, as interest rates, well, so as interest rates go up, does that mean that usually bonds go down or they go up, they go down in terms of value, the thing that was really interesting in the corporate market was that all the previous parameters for risk assessment were no longer viable, because the interest rate environment had changed so drastically. So there were new models being created, the rating rating agencies were just so far behind the curve, they weren't very useful in terms of assessing any risk. And it was a very interesting time in that.If you remember, Michael Milken, he really changed the face of corporate finance, in that he made capital accessible to mid tier companies, they never had access to this type of capital before. So it was a really interesting time period financially, but for the aberrations of these incredibly high interest rates, and for the fact that the access to capital was dramatically changing, for much of corporate America. So fast forward, out of curiosity, just to go off of the, the timeline to today. For the past few years, economists have been talking about how we're going to go through this incredibly high level of inflation and, and it's gonna it's gonna cause unemployment as we raise the interest rates to go up. And the reality is that and I was reading an article by Paul Krugman, this morning from the New York Times, a lot of what people predicted just didn't happen at all. What do you think about all that? I think the economy is proven to be a little more resilient than we thought. But I also think government numbers are pretty useless. Years ago, when the numbers made no sense to me, I found a website called Shadow stats.com, which is by math economist. His numbers made sense. The government has revamped their numbers. So many times there's no continuity in terms of trying to ascertain what's actually going on. I think you are starting to see more layoffs. I think that our economy personally is fairly brittle and fragile. i What's going to be the event that said something's off. But if you look at say, banking, everybody's underwater in their bond portfolio, commercial real estate market is plummeted. There was recently a building in San Francisco that I think assessed for 40 or 50% of its value just five years ago. And it's happening in numerous urban areas. The economy is really slow to react to these large changes. It's been slower than I thought it would be. Look at the housing market, for example, interest rates are at 8%. They weren't 3% A few years ago, that's a 5%. That's a 5% change. Typically, the rule of thumb is you see about a 1% 10% change in valuation for every 1% move in interest rates. Well, that would argue for close to a 50% change in market, the market value of real estate assets, but you're not seeing that in a lot of places. I think that we need to be a little patient. I think there are a few things impacting it. And it varies by locale, of course, the media usually oversimplifies so many things and I think they also tend to miss characterize a lot of things. So we were hearing about all this business of inflation. And people keep being told by a lot of politicians that inflation is really high and all that and the prices are really high. Krugman made an interesting observation this morning and which was just because inflation is going down, up there. Michael Hingson ** 10:00 It's not something that directly and certainly immediately controls prices. So inflation may be going down, but we are paying more. And just because inflation drops, that doesn't mean that suddenly we're going to pay less for things. Pat Wetzel ** 10:14 Well, I would argue that that, first of all, go back to the argument that the government numbers for mission are pretty useless. For example, I went into Trader Joe's the other day, and a chicken breast, that rather turkey breast that I bought a year ago ran about $25. It's $50. Now.And I think that the average person going out and having to pay for just the things that we need to I think we would all argue that interest rates have probably been more in the 15% up range. Rather, if price inflation has been 18 Plus, if not more in certain categories. Yeah. And I would also submit that again, Michael Hingson ** 10:56 the numbers are are all over the place. And that's I'm agreeing with you, I think that we're not really seeing Pat Wetzel ** 11:02 something yet, that's really consistent that that really tells us what is going on. But I also think that too many people are politicizing it, rather than trying to come up with a real solution. Nobody wants to do that. They want to just blame everyone else for it. Yeah, I agree with that. And you know, it always comes down in my mind, you said, you have to live within your means. It's okay to borrow with it. But you can't get over your head and debt. There's no free lunch here. I think even the Fed is now coming out and saying that the spending out of Washington is absolutely out of control. That's by the heart. It's not political. It's just reality. And I think that I think we need to return to a saner way of living in personally, I think this model of perpetual growth may not be sustainable, you can't grow forever. Right. Michael Hingson ** 11:59 Not without something else changing in the process, we had a fair amount of credit card debt over a number of years. And my wife, once we moved down here really decided we need to, to not be so much in credit card debt, and literally over about a four or five year period. And she handled all the bills every day was in QuickBooks and quicken and everything else and looking at everything. But you know what, we now don't owe anything on credit cards, except for whatever is due in a given month. And she passed away this past November. And when I decided to do to make sure we don't get in trouble like that, again, was to set every credit card that we have that we use, and we're not even I'm not even using all the ones that we have available. But what I have done is to set them for automatic payment to pay off the entire balance every month. So it really forces me too. And I don't mind doing it at all stay within means and the main thing we do with credit cards, other than going to Costco and buying food every so often is it's all about business. So it's easy, because we have mechanisms to get reimbursed for a lot of the stuff I do for business. So we get to pay everything back and I agree with you, we need to live within our means. For a while we had some challenges and weren't able to do that. That's been a number of years. And so now we will I just make sure that we don't accrue any credit card debt because it's got to be paid off every month. Pat Wetzel ** 13:38 And with you there isn't any material thing I have to have. I just don't need it. Michael Hingson ** 13:45 If there's something I need to have that I've got to save for it. I have wanted a Sonos subwoofer to get bass on my audio system for years, and the son of subwoofers like 800 bucks. That's a fair amount of money. Yeah, but it does sound good, but I wanted it. But I wasn't going to spend the money for it. Until it suddenly I realized that for my business credit card. I accrue points, and I had like almost 1000 points. And so what it really meant was that the subwoofer, because I just suddenly one day on a whim, decided to look in the catalog of of items sold through this point system, and they had the Sonos subwoofer, and it was like 800 points. So I got my subwoofer and it didn't cost anything, which is great. Hey, that's wonderful. And I needed to use some of those points for something. And now they're they're growing again and probably what I'll do is wait and save up for an iPhone. Because for me like with iPhones, I don't need to have the latest and greatest one. And the reality is that the current iPhone On the iPhone 15 is good and has made some significant advances. But the thing that they publicize the most, of course, is the camera, which I don't really care as much about. So I'll probably wait for the 16 before I go off and make a purchase, no one has given me yet compelling reasons why, for my iPhone experience, it would be great to upgrade to the 15 from the 13. Somebody might come along and convince me and if that happens, great, but, you know, I do think we need to live within our means and being very conscious about it. It is certainly something I want to continue. And I and I know that for some people, it's hard, because they don't have the income. But we do have a lot of open jobs. And I wish we could figure out a way to convince people that maybe we need to take different jobs, and maybe we want to take but we can learn and we can at least earn an income. I think with any job you can always learn. And I think that learning is invaluable. Because you've learned something, you take that knowledge board with you, wherever you go, nobody can ever take it from you. Yeah. Well, so you went through challenges and that obviously had to help shape your, your view of things. So what happened after myasthenia gravis, and so on? And what did you What did you do to move forward? Well, I went through a very difficult and it was an interesting period of time, I call it my life wish death wish period. Pat Wetzel ** 16:31 Obviously, I wanted to live, but I have lost everything that ever mattered to me. My in laws, who I loved dearly, my ex husband, who I loved, everybody was just on. And I really just didn't care about what happened. And the thing that's interesting about that, is I became somewhat fearless. And I started learning to fly sail planes. And I eventually ended up buying a high performance sail plane, which of course, I didn't know how to fly, I would have to figure that out since it was a single seat plane. But it was a very interesting period in my life. And I think that experience of being fairly fearless is something I want to take forward with me. So you went through a divorce and all that was because of the myasthenia gravis or other kinds of forces? You know, I'm not going to speak for my ex. 17:27 Yeah. Michael Hingson ** 17:29 It's, it's unfortunate, you know, things, things change. And sometimes we just aren't willing to change with it. But I don't know what what happened in your case. I know, for Karen and me, we live together, we were married for 40 years, she's always been in a wheelchair. And I've always been blind, we have undergone changes in our lives, a lot of economic challenges, job issues for a while. And of course, for me as a as a blind person, in fact, for her, but probably more for me.The difficulty in applying for a job is that so many people say well, you're blind, you can't do the job. And the prejudice is run really deep. And so for a while, the job I had was actually I ran my own company. And all of my employees were paid before I was paid. And so for actually three years, we mostly lived on credit cards. And that's all we could do. Because we had employees that we had to pay. And eventually, we did okay. And we sold the company and I went to work for other companies. And we came out of that. And again, eventually we were really able to pay off bills, but it really tests you. And it's a question of how much you're committed to staying with someone just because change has happened. And I think both Karen and I, at various times, had changes in our lives. But we made a strong commitment to stay with each other. And we did. So Karen got sick and 2014 we moved down here, which we never thought we were going to do. And she almost died. She was in the 40% that didn't pass away from double pneumonia with a 90% occlusion of her lungs. And she survived that. But still it it had a great toll on on both of us. But you make the decision to go forward. And she and I did. We talked about it a lot. And we we came through it. And it's all you can do. Well, I'm clapping for you. I think that's a difficult thing to do. And I think that it's the harder path but probably the path where you learn an awful lot. Well it is. I think you you learn a lot more if you are willing to do it and you go back to basic things. We made a commitment in November of 1982 to live with each other and stay married and in sickness and in health and and in money and not all that wasn't really part of the Vows but it was still there. And so we did. But you know, I can appreciate that there are always challenges that come up. And sometimes you have to deal with things. And in your case you you did lose a lot. But you've obviously worked and gone in other directions, right? Pat Wetzel ** 20:16 Yeah, very interestingly, originally, way back when everybody thought I would write, and I'd love to read, I love to write. But I took the more practical path. Now, fast forward several decades, and I'm doing what I originally really wanted to do. You know, with a podcast, I'd have interesting, meaningful conversations every week. It's fabulous. And I'm working on my second book now bump in the road strong women. And it's, it's wonderful. It's a lot of work sometimes, but I really welcome it. And do you can always write another book called a bumpy road. But that's another story. There are no bumps in any one. Michael Hingson ** 21:01 We need others. We could always talk about the pothole in the road. Just another thought, the pothole in the road instead of the bump in the road. Pat Wetzel ** 21:12 Might zoom background, I have this curving road. And somebody said that I the curving road and the twists and turns just as not sufficient that I should actually blow the bridge up. Because that would give a much better sense of what is really like, well, you could have an automated background so every so often, it blows up. Michael Hingson ** 21:34 That reminds me of the old original Addams Family, remember when Gomez Addams would always run the trains and would blow all up? And so just saying that's another thought. Have an automated background and blow up the bridge every so often. I'll work on that. Yeah, there's something to consider. But you so so you have your own business now or what? Well, the the podcasts the book and I'm starting to do public speaking. Okay. And so does the podcast generate income for you, you must have a way of doing an income or have you done some of those suspicious bank robberies we don't know anything about. Pat Wetzel ** 22:15 I bet they talk about my suspicious bank robberies, if you don't mind. But I'm the podcast is about breaks even. And obviously, the books in new revenue stream, Michael Hingson ** 22:29 say that podcasting and writing books for most people is not a huge income stream, at least not individually. Right. How long have you been doing the podcast now? I'm going on my fourth year. Wow. That's pretty exciting. And yeah, I snuck out what's the average? What's the average failure rate or time to failure? For POCs? I think three or four months? Yeah, I think so. We're now two and a half. Well, almost two and a half years into unstoppable mindset. And we actually went from one episode a week to two episodes a week last year, because we were getting so much attention. And people said we want to be on the podcast. So we actually now do two episodes a day a week. And literally today this will tell people about when we're recording, we just upped uploaded and published episode 177. So we're having a lot of fun with it. And people are very kind and we have been getting great reviews and people say nice things. So I guess I can't complain too much. Pat Wetzel ** 23:34 No, I think podcasting is just fabulous. I really do. I am so grateful for the people I meet, I meet the most interesting people. And because we're talking about their bumps in the road, we have meaningful conversations. And that means a great deal to me. Yeah, well, and with unstoppable mindset, as you know, I asked people to tell me what they want to talk about. And that's what we talk about, which is perfectly sensible. Because you don't want you want to talk about and can talk about a whole heck of a lot more than I do. And I think it's important to have conversations and not just do an interview. So this is a lot of fun to do. And, you know, having been on bump in the road, it's a lot of fun to thanks, I I'm very thankful for bump, it really came out of a bump in the road. And it has been, I think one of the most interesting paths I have taken in my life. Michael Hingson ** 24:31 So why did you do it? What what really prompted you to start doing the podcast? Pat Wetzel ** 24:37 I had lined up about a million dollars for a project I was working on called cancer road trip, where every quarter we would give seven people who've been impacted by cancer and amazing bucket list trip. The first trip was Tanzania. So we were looking at you know, Kilimanjaro, the metaphor of a mountain Safari and the metaphor of survival, Tanzania and the spice of life. that type of thing to tell stories against these iconic backups, but COVID hit. So everything shut down everything. Two years, and all the money I put into it were gone. So after being fairly depressed for about two weeks, I needed to do something, yeah, you can only eat so many potato chips, you know. So I decided I need to do something, and if nothing else, just to keep my social media audience that I had developed in place. So I decided to do a podcast, and the idea of a bump in the road came to me. And I didn't know if it would work. I didn't know if I could get anybody. I had no idea what would happen. I knew nothing about podcasting. But I dove in. And here I am, you know, three plus years later going into my fourth year. You do in addition to this, and the fact that you wrote a book and you're writing a new book, do you do any kind of coaching or consulting? Or do you strictly do the podcast and the book, right now I'm working on keynote, a keynote speech, speech, that can be adapted for a variety of environments, I really want to if I prepare enough, I actually enjoy public speaking. And I'm looking forward to combining some fun travel and some speaking over the next year and a half or so. Yeah, home speaking is starting to pick up again, since Karen passed, I now have the time to do it again as well. And now I don't have to worry about leaving her up. So I've started to work on trying to find more speaking engagements and to be able to inspire people. And the reality is there's a lot that we can inspire people about and we can certainly set a tone and a trend. So I look forward to to doing more public speaking again, and we're working on it, it's coming up. Michael Hingson ** 26:54 I actually had an email correspondence with someone yesterday about possibly speaking at an event for them next year, and it was not a person I knew. But I wrote a letter. And it turns out that she read it almost immediately. And she wrote back and I was was humorous in the letter to a degree because apparently she was in a building for a while that burned down. And I said, a building that your building burned down. What a way to force people to work remotely rather than being in the office. Pretty clever way to do it. And she wrote back actually saw it this morning, she said, your letter came right at the right time. It was a down day yesterday, and you really brighten my day. But you know, I think that that's kind of the part of me. I love humor. Not in a negative way. But I love humor. And I love to try to get people to smile and laugh. Every time I go through a TSA kiosk and meet the TSA people. They always say, Where's your I need your boarding pass and your ID and I'll give him the boarding pass. I say but I need your ID and I said what did you do lose yours? You know, things like that. And they say, Oh, they have they have? Or during COVID When it was at a time when I would be wearing a mask? And I still do. But I would also say What do you mean, you want my ID? I'm wearing a mask? How are you going to be able to tell who I am? Oh, we're going to ask you to take your mask off. And I said, Well, I'm still just going to look like this piece of paper. What does that do for you? Yeah, but it's it's all about making them laugh. And I think it's important. Humor, in a good way has to be part of what we do. Because like with those people, it's such a thankless job, you know? Well, I think humor is important a lot. It gives you a little perspective. And life is short, enjoy it, enjoy the ride. And I think part of enjoying it is having a sense of humor. Otherwise, how do you survive? Yeah, it's important to be able to laugh at things and laugh at yourself, and help other people laugh because it is so hard to do. And we live in such a serious world. Today, with so many things going on. We need to find ways to lighten up and smile. So you know, I think it is really important. Can you tell us anything about what your keynote is, is looking like it will be about Pat Wetzel ** 29:23 your strong women. My next book is a bump in the road strong women. I've interviewed some amazing women. And that's what I'm going to focus on. 29:33 Well, Pat Wetzel ** 29:35 I'm really looking forward to it. Do you have a publisher? Or are you self publishing? Or how are you doing the books, self published and I've looked at the publishing options. So the reality is to get a top notch publisher, you have to be famous, essentially, I have about 80,000 people on my social media following and frankly, that doesn't even turn anybody's head anymore. If you go the hybrid route I interviewed and now Pat Wetzel ** 29:59 number of well known publishers for the hybrid route. And reality is I'm doing more than they would do to market my books right now. Michael Hingson ** 30:11 So I don't think that they bring a lot of value to the equation. So for the moment, I think self publishing looks like a way for me to go, Well, yeah, publishing in general, doesn't do the marketing in the stuff that it used to do. And they do want you to be a major contributor to the marketing effort if they publish your book at all. And I think it's possible to get books published, and there's value in using a publisher, if you can get them to read your book. Michael Hingson ** 30:41 But at the same time, not everyone can do that, or wants to put that time into the marketing effort, which, which is part of the challenge. I think there are a lot of great books out there. My belief is everyone has a story to tell. And I wish more people would tell their stories, which is why we have unstoppable mindset. And you have Pat Wetzel ** 31:00 likewise bump in the road? Absolutely. I, I think people's stories are amazing. I think we can learn so much each other. And it can really expedite our own learning curves, if we will just stop and really listen and feel. Because when you feel that wisdom seeps into you, it permeates you in a way that just a superficial story won't. Will Tell me a little bit more about bump in the road, when when did you publish it? And what's it about? Published in us just a September, so it's fairly new, we did hit Amazon Best Selling status, which was great. But I a bump in the road really came about because after about a little over a year, maybe years of doing the podcast, I was so moved, and so taken by the stories of my guests, that this wisdom just had a share. And I had a fairly unique perspective on all these stories. Because I have a 30,000 foot view, I hear everybody's story. And across all these stories, I see all these common elements that permeate them. And I thought, there's just so much to learn here from all these people. So that was the the orig origin of bump in the road, the initial book was twice as long as it is now. I had to cut it down. I probably have material for about 10 books, I just have to find the time to write them at this point. Yeah, well, you know, it's only so much one could do in a day, or you just have to work faster. Pat Wetzel ** 32:32 Well, actually, you were talking about doing publishing twice a week in your podcast. But podcast is bumped through the spring of 2024 At this point, and I'm beginning to feel as though that's rude. I don't want people to wait because their stories are great. And I've been thinking that maybe what I need to do is, if possible, work harder to open up some time actually to write more. 32:54 Yeah, Michael Hingson ** 32:56 it is. It's valuable. We we wrote thunder dog and Susie flora and I did thunder dog. And it was published in 2011. And we were very blessed that Thomas Nelson publishing, took it on. They're the largest Michael Hingson ** 33:11 Christian publisher in the world. Now they're part of HarperCollins. Michael Hingson ** 33:15 And that has been a great relationship that has now gone on for 12 years. And I can't complain very much about any of that. They've been very supportive, and it continues to go well. Then we did self published running with Roselle. That was the second book. And that was more for kids, talking about what it's like to be a blind child growing up and a guide dog growing up, and then we meet and we ended up in the World Trade Center. But it wasn't nearly as much about the World Trade Center. But I've experienced both. We're writing a new book about learning to control fear. And we do have a publisher for that. And I expect we'll get some good things out of that. So it's it's pretty cool. Pat Wetzel ** 33:58 That's interesting learning to control fear. What are some of the key factors in that? Michael Hingson ** 34:05 I think the biggest thing is that we need to recognize that most of what we're afraid of is stuff that we can't control. And we just talk ourselves into a being afraid. And we've never learned how to stop fearing things. unexpected things happen are happening in our lives. And yes, there are physiological things that occur. But at the same time, what what we can do Michael Hingson ** 34:29 is learn that fear is a very powerful tool. So I learned all that I could about what to do in the World Trade Center and how to function in the World Trade Center, what the emergency evacuation procedures were, and so on. And the result of all that was when an emergency actually did happen. I knew what to do. And I knew and I didn't even think about the fact that I was creating a mindset for that. As I was studying everything I could have Michael Hingson ** 34:59 At the World Trade Center where things were, I love to tell people you could drug me in the World Trade Center and take me anywhere and drop me off. And when I woke up, I would know where I was within like about five seconds, because I knew the complex, I didn't need to read signs. And I think that's something that everyone needs to do is I create ppreciate eyesight, I value it. Michael Hingson ** 35:21 But I also think that we spend too much time relying just on eyesight, and not our other senses. And the fact of the matter is that fear is something that often comes up because we think that things are unknown, that don't need to be unknown. So we don't really look at why we're afraid of things, we don't tend to be introspective, we don't tend to analyze. And those are all things that we should do, and learn, most important of all, only to worry about the things that we really can control and not worry about the rest, because it's not going to do us any good. That's true. I don't What do you think? How do you feel after you've moved through fear? What do you think some of the lessons are from overcoming fear? Well, I think of course, it depends on exactly what the situation is. But I think the important thing is that when you're afraid of something, or something happens, that causes you to be afraid, there will come a time when you're going to as you just pointed out, move through the fear, right? And what you need to do is to then stop and take the time, even if it's before you go to sleep at night, but take the time to look at why was I afraid? What was really going on? Did I really need to be afraid of this? And yes, there are certainly times where that is an issue when something happens that is is what would would cause a fear reaction. But most of the time, the things that we're afraid are going to happen, never do. But we tend to build up this fear. And we never then go back and look at why was I really afraid of that what what really is the motivator that I need to look at and re address so that I'm not afraid of that in the future. So I think it is an issue that, you know, that we do need to look at. But we we also have grown up so much not learning about how to deal with fear. And we live in a society today where people are learning not to trust each other or anyone. And that's why it's our third book is being called Live like a guide dog. Dogs love unconditionally. But dogs do not trust unconditionally. But the difference between dogs and people are, is that dogs are unless something really horrible has happened to them. Dogs are open to trust. And we should find better ways to be open to trust. If somebody doesn't earn our trust, that's fine, then you don't deal with that. But we we are even open to dealing with trust, and the possibility that we can trust someone because we figure everybody has their own agendas. I think trust is really important. My favorite trust story actually comes from Mary Neal, who's in my book. She's an orthopedic surgeon, she ran the Spine Center at USC. And she and her husband were kayaking and Chile, as she went over a waterfall was well within her ability range, but she got trapped underneath it and she died. Her story is this is a near death experience story. Pat Wetzel ** 38:27 Once she finally made it back to Jackson Hole through a remarkable series of coincidences, she was very badly hurt, she had to heal. And she's studying or trying to convince herself that her near death experience did not happen. Because she was a linear tangible scientist, who could if you see measure it, surely it doesn't exist. And at the end of that, she realized that her spiritual experience was indeed very real. And she as she says, and I just love this, she moved from hope to trust. Pat Wetzel ** 39:01 What an incredible paradigm shift in how you view the world, and how you view your spirituality. Michael Hingson ** 39:09 Yeah. And, and it makes perfect sense that the problem with science, to some degree, is as you said, if you can't measure it, it can't be so even though now we've learned to measure or observe things that we never did before. And we've learned that maybe things aren't quite as we think. But But science also tends to, Michael Hingson ** 39:36 as you said, be very linear and linear. And the reality is the world isn't linear. Now, I think the world is has many mysteries to show us yet. Yeah. And that's what makes it fun. I've always loved the internet, because the internet is such a treasure trove of information. And it's fun to just go exploring and learning about different things in the internet and for me how Michael Hingson ** 39:59 Be not seen my entire life, Michael Hingson ** 40:03 I find the internet a really fun place to go and experience a lot of things that I never otherwise probably would have been able to experience. It is an alternative that makes data available to me. Pat Wetzel ** 40:17 I agree as it was interesting, I was having a conversation earlier with somebody who asked me how I found the guests for my podcast. And I'm very fortunate now that people contact me all the time. And I don't have to look as I did. But I really enjoy the process of looking for guests. Because it takes me off on these explorations, I would never think of Pat Wetzel ** 40:41 people whose paths otherwise I would never crossed. And it can just be from going down a rabbit hole on the internet, you run an interesting person, and they're just somebody you have to meet. I find the web just fascinating in that regard. Yeah, well, and I have found that with LinkedIn, and the Internet and and other things as well. And it's so fun when you get to meet somebody whose experiences are different than you. I tell people all the time, as far as I'm concerned, if I'm not learning as much, from my guess, as anyone else, that I'm not doing my job? Well, I think meeting people is a learning experience. And I think part of the key to learning is learning to listen, I've been on a little bit of a rant about this lately, on my side trips, which are super short podcasts under five minutes. Pat Wetzel ** 41:32 I, I one of the things I would love to convey to people is learn to tell a good story. Pat Wetzel ** 41:40 Telling a story is making it experiential. I mean, if you go on a trip, don't bore me with a litany of I do this, I did that I saw this, I saw that I did like this. Instead, tell me about an experience. Tell me about a fabulous meal, an incredible location. Tell me something experiential. You know, the best salespeople in the world are people who tell stories, and who get you to relate to their product and what they want to talk with you about by telling stories. Now, it still may be that what they have, isn't going to do the best for you. And they should be honest about that as well. But good salespeople tell stories, and that always enhances what they do, and what you learn from it. I think stories are incredibly powerful. And our personal stories are powerful, they're inspiring. I think that they are so full of wisdom, that it it puts all of us to stop and listen to each other because we just might learn something. And we might just find some real empathy for other people's. Michael Hingson ** 42:50 The other thing that I would say is and you're talking about creating a keynote address, put stories in it. I'm sure that's not magic to you. But I think that it's important for people to relate to you. And they'll do that best with stories. I have always believed that I don't talk to an audience. When I go speak, I talk with an audience. And I look to see how they react to different things that I say. And I've learned how things that I talk about when I'm talking about them, affect people. And I've learned how much of relationship and rapport I've been able to establish with audiences by how they react to different things that I say it takes a breath or whatever. And I think that that's so important. I heard a speech once by someone who was talking about one subject relating to September 11. And they just went down this list of people. And they talked for 20 minutes, but there was no story. It was one of the one of the most boring things that I've ever heard. Michael Hingson ** 44:01 And I've heard some people I've attended some speeches, where people are talking about financial things, people in the financial industry, and how boring they are because they're just reciting facts and figures. And don't do anything to relate to the average audience. I think that's very true. I was listening to somebody talk about a financial book they wrote recently. Oh my god, I just had to get the combination. It was so boring. I just Pat Wetzel ** 44:30 and there were no stories just as you're saying. Michael Hingson ** 44:34 So Michael Hingson ** 44:36 what's the the format or what is what is the book bump in the road? Pat Wetzel ** 44:41 The format are it's 15 stories about remarkable people. And each of those people represent a theme there some some of the themes would certainly be courage. Hers take a different path. Pat Wetzel ** 44:56 Oh, they're just a travel is a theme in it 44:59 today Pat Wetzel ** 45:00 is a big theme. I think authenticity actually is a theme that shows up in each and every story. I think each person after hitting a bump in the road, really pause to search for what is the right path forward for them. And each person finds a unique way to do that. Authenticity is a really interesting thing. And you have said that quieting your mind is a very important thing to deal with. When you're addressing personal authenticity. Why is that? I think learning to quiet your mind is first a totally learnable skill, found the most profound skills you can ever learn, and you need it in your arsenal. Because until you can learn to quiet your mind, still in peace internally, you can't learn to listen or observe your thoughts. Otherwise, your your mind just runs and runs and runs. And often the thoughts that occur to you may really be thoughts that are planted by you know, your societal surroundings, your parents, your employer, the expectations of life around you. But when you can learn to be still you can learn to observe your, your thoughts, and when ability comes awareness. Now you can consciously choose your thoughts. And that awareness is astonishing, it really gives you choice, at least a reflection. Personally, I'm a big fan of meditation to achieve that. And an hour of meditation is that it's experiential. That's where it really changes your life. And that's where learning occurs. There's joy and magic in endless silence, and there's profound peace. And once you experience that peace, it's not a no, it's not an intellectual thing. It's a heartfelt knowing that there is this piece that is always there, and always accessible. And you bring that all of a sudden into your everyday life, you know, road rage, who needs it, who cares, you have peace with you. It's really life changing. And there's so many different ways to meditate. You can use sound, it might be in sport, it could be in walking, it could be in gardening, it can be in sitting, I really fan, I really urge everybody to explore how meditation might be been might be beneficial for your life. And there, you've answered the question about controlling fear to a very large degree. If you stop and listen to yourself, and really are willing to take that step back, you'll learn so much that you'll never learn any other way. I've been a very great fan the last few months of saying Not that I'm my own worst critic when I think about things, but I'm my own best teacher. Because really, I'm the only one who can teach me other people can offer information. But I'm the only one that can really teach it to me. And I much prefer the positivity of I'm my own best teacher. And if people would really take the time to silence and step back, and listen. It's amazing how much you'll learn. Pat Wetzel ** 48:04 And I think ultimately, the this road trip called Life is ideally a trip towards ever greater authenticity. And that demands that you stop and listen and make conscious choices about how you react, how you see things, and then ultimately be open to a broader world, and open to new experiences that can also help change and mold you. Michael Hingson ** 48:29 Who are some of your favorite guests from a bump in the road. Pat Wetzel ** 48:35 Every single one of them, I really can't pick a favorite. Pat Wetzel ** 48:39 One that I thought was really very powerful was Effie Parks's story. She's a mom, and she was pregnant and happy and excited for the perfect child who's going to grow up and be a star and be an astronaut and whatnot. And our child was born with some very nice genetic defects. It was a tremendously isolating experience for her because as her friend's children grew, her her son, person the same way, and she had a 24/7 responsibility with a very disabled child. And her story really changed when she just found love in her situation. And finding that love just changed everything about her outlook and her perspective. And I love that story. Because I think it's a story for all of us. And I think it's a very profound story about how our perspective really shapes the way we view the world and how we have choice in how we view the world. So Michael Hingson ** 49:41 in thinking about that, she found meaning in what she was doing, why is it really important to find the meaning of life for you? I think everybody needs to have meaning. Otherwise, what is the point Pat Wetzel ** 49:55 are really just floating through through life and then we die. I think that Pat Wetzel ** 50:00 You need meaning to motivate you, to help you get up every morning to rest, to learn to achieve capabilities in different areas, I think meaning is one of the critical pieces of a well lived life, though a bump in the road is all about a bump in the road of life. Michael Hingson ** 50:21 And how do you navigate? What are some of the keys to navigating bumps in the road? Now? That's a great question. Pat Wetzel ** 50:30 I think one of the themes, there are numerous themes. Certainly one is courage, we talked about fear earlier, be willing to face your fear and move through it. I think authenticity is a very an identity are very strong themes. I think these people had to look at their lives, strip away the pieces of them that no longer worked, and find a new person underneath it, find their most authentic person, and move forward with that. And generally, they were committed to really continuing that type of internal dialogue and practice as life went on. Pat Wetzel ** 51:08 I think that one of the reasons I am fascinated by the idea of a bump in the road is What does teach us to navigate this, we all have to figure it out for ourselves. And that's a little crazy, there really are certain things that we can do, such as having courage, such as being willing to strip away these false identities that we all have, as a result of just moving through this side. Pat Wetzel ** 51:32 I think that as we listen to each other stories, we can just learn so much, so much about these bumps. And I think it all comes down to willing to be open to change. A lot of people don't really change, they like the status quo, they like the comfort of being in their comfort zone. But the reality is the magic outside your comfort zone that the magic is. And the magic is in the present moment. Because in that moment, you can make a change. And you can then sculpt that the next moment, and the next. And that means getting out of your mind, getting into your heart getting into the present. And I think that's a lesson about how to blow these bumps. And the reality is, so what does that really do? It widens your comfort zone, and you learn to be more comfortable than you were before with a with a broader perspective, which makes perfect sense. Pat Wetzel ** 52:29 And I think, as you bought in your comfort zone, and as you go through that type of activity again and again, you become more and more open to this amazing world we live in. Michael Hingson ** 52:40 And it really is an amazing world. It's an incredible place where there is so much that we get to explore and so much that we get to do. Michael Hingson ** 52:50 I, I get very frustrated so often because people are so I'm curious. Michael Hingson ** 52:58 After September 11, I thought this was an amazing story. One of the things that I did the next month was I went to British Columbia to speak to a guided group. And they arranged for me to do some different interviews on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, television. And I was on one show, but before the show, I was in the green room with several people, including somebody from a major Think Tank, who was a past Prime Minister of Canada. Michael Hingson ** 53:28 And this was just after we, in the United States invaded Afghanistan. And so I asked this person, what do you think of George W. Bush? And they paused for a second and then said, Michael Hingson ** 53:45 the real thing about him is he's the most uncurious person that I've ever met and ever knew. He relies on everyone and doesn't ever really explore for himself. I never expected that kind of an answer, but I can appreciate it. And it's so true for so many of us. We just don't explore for ourselves. We just take what people tell us and then we go on. I think that's very true. And I think cultivating curiosity should be high on everyone's list. Because it opens opens doors you would never expect. Oh, absolutely. Michael Hingson ** 54:23 I remember my father when we lived in Chicago was a TV repairman. He and my uncle owned a shop. And he said to me a few times when I was there and they were working on TVs he said no, don't stick your hands inside the TV because you'll get a shock. And I don't think I ever deliberately did it. But I got close enough a couple of times that I did get a shock. Michael Hingson ** 54:45 I only used one hand Michael Hingson ** 54:48 and and he said you know what did I tell you? And I said Well, I I didn't say anything I said yeah. He said let me unplug it and then you can look inside and he unplugged it and made sure things were discharged. I got to look Michael Hingson ** 55:00 inside of a television, which back in those days was all about vacuum tubes and other things. So as before, as they say TV went dark, and it was all transistors, but he encouraged curiosity. And I think that that's so important that we all need to encourage curiosity. And also, I realize it's gotta be a real tough world for kids right now. And parents need to recognize you can't helicopter your kids, you can't shelter your kids, you can watch. But you got to let kids grow up. I read an article a couple of weeks ago, that was talking about what's the most important thing that we can do for children today? And the answer basically, was let kids explore, it doesn't mean that you don't monitor them. But we have to find ways to let children explore and learn more about the world. And I understand there's a lot of terrifying things out there. But if we don't let children explore, they're never going to learn. And this article pointed out that all they do is they grew up being afraid. Pat Wetzel ** 56:00 You know, I think that's true, we're probably close to the same age. And when we were growing up, nobody wore helmets, we rolled in the dirt. You know, we just didn't have this fear, that seems to be bred into a lot of young people today. And I would wish for anybody who's young, to please pursue whatever interests you. And you have so much at your disposal, at this disposable. Everything on the web, my gosh, you can learn almost any these days, it's it's just remarkable. And you as a young person, your mind is so agile and open, quit, pursue whatever it is that spins your wheels. I do think that in reality, things like wearing a helmet that you mentioned, and other things are important. Because if you are in an accident, and they will help protect you, but you shouldn't do it out of fear. You should do it because we've learned how to advance and use tools and technology to help us be better and stay safer. It. It shouldn't be done out of fear, though. And that's the problem. Pat Wetzel ** 57:12 Oh, I agree with but I'll also throw in one other thing. There's nothing like the wind moving through your hair. Yep. As your race down a hill. It's fun. It's exhilarating. It connects you to the world around you. So I think that there's a place for safety. And I think there's a place for risks. Oh, absolutely. No question about that. But But I think that one, they're not mutually exclusive. And one doesn't preclude the other and you just need to, to be wise about what you do. Tell me a little bit more about you and sail planning. That is a lot of fun. Pat Wetzel ** 57:51 I kind of stumbled into it. To tell you the truth. I never expected to fly. But I was on a cross country trip. And I stopped at the Calistoga This was back Oh around 89 or so. And back then we'll country was still. It wasn't as polished as it is now. And Cal Stoeger was kind of a dumpy little town at the north end Valley. And I noticed that there was a runway and airport runway that intersected the Main Street. And I thought this is so strange. And so I went over to check it out. They had glider rides. So I took the ride in really well me that it was okay, but didn't allow me. Went back got back. And I heard about some lawyers of poor flying South Plains on weekends. And I invited myself out for a three day weekend. And I was hooked. And that was just the beginning of the end. I went on to move to another club. That was very competitive. Everybody had these beautiful high tech planes. I got it a plane. And I learned to I really learned to soar. It's a metaphor, and it's a sport. How far have you sort? That is? What's the longest flight you've been able to take? Oh, gosh, I'll say about 500 kilometers. Wow. And what do you do with the end of it? Do you? Do you turn around or do somebody come pick you up? Or what hope you land at the same airport? Oh, all right. So you go in a circle, you're not going in a straight line? Well, you can somebody a lot of people do straight out flights. I mean, there's it's it becomes a sport after a point where you're going for time you're going for distance you might go for altitude. Pat Wetzel ** 59:35 And the other challenges in them I think in general with cross country soaring. Part of the challenge and the risk is getting back to your home airport. Because if you land out when I was flying, I started playing in the 90s before cellphones. So when you landed out, you didn't have GPS, you didn't know exactly where you were. You didn't have a phone. You had to make sure your plane was you know Pat Wetzel ** 1:00:00 saved, then you had a hike out, find a phone somewhere. Hopefully they knew where you were, call back to the airport hope somebody picked up the phone and hope that some people would come and get you and help disassemble the plane and get it out of what field he lived in. Michael Hingson ** 1:00:19 Landed in. So it was really been an adventure on a number of levels. I remember when I was growing up in Palmdale, my father worked at Edwards Air Force Base, we went to the air shows every year. And I don't know what it was one year, there were a large number of gliders that were participating in the airshow. And this one pilot got in his plane. And he fluid not up in the air. But literally, he was able to just get it up on his wheels are on one wheel. And he flew the plane on the ground just in one position, but it didn't tip over. And he did it for like about a half hour, which was kind of fascinating. Wow, that is interesting. No, I think Pat Wetzel ** 1:01:04 I think soaring is just an amazing sport on so many levels. And I think it's most amazing, because you're glitched to be able to do this, you work hard to get the skills. I mean, they're not given they don't come overnight. But the idea of wearing down a mountain lion or being up at over 30,000 feet. And just having this incredible view of the Earth from above. In a craft that is Island. Barron Hilton once wrote, Barron Hilton, founded Hilton Hotels and had a ranch in Nevada. And he sponsored an international soaring competition every year. And he has a book where he wrote, There was a foreword in the book by Baron Hill. The book is called silence in the wind. And he noted that a sail plane was a craft fueled only by the mind of the pilot. Pat Wetzel ** 1:01:56 I can see why. And I think that's a great metaphor again for life. The decisions you make the peace, you find your work with the invisible energy around. And that's how you got your life. Now, do you still sore? No, I still be playing a number of years ago, I think I risk parameters were changing, hanging out 100 miles from the middle of nowhere, hoping somebody would come get you was getting old. Michael Hingson ** 1:02:22 You just needed to turn around sooner. There you go. 1:02:28 Well, Pat Wetzel ** 1:02:30 another question about bumps in the road, the book, you have an online companion to it. Tell me about that. Yeah. I, I wanted it to be a multimedia experience and allow people to delve deeper into the stories, I have some very edited excerpts from some of the key parts of the cast each of my guests, but you can listen to the full podcast, which is in some cases only available as a subscriber. It's free for everybody buys the book, there's video, there are pictures so you can get a more comprehensive view of the guest. And I also have a workbook, because I think that the wisdom in all these stories is something we can explore within ourselves. And I give people some prompts and some ideas for how to take this wisdom and how to take these stories and apply them to their own lives for their own benefit. Is there an audio version of bump in the road? Pat Wetzel ** 1:03:25 The audio version is actually being recorded right now as we speak. And I think it should be available in two or three weeks. Oh, good, because then I can buy the book and get the full subscription to the podcast. Absolutely. That's super. Where can people get bumps in the road? Amazon, of course. Michael Hingson ** 1:03:45 Makes sense. Well, that's, that is really cool. Well, I really am grateful that you came on and spend some time with us today, talking about all of the things that we got to talk about. If people want to reach out to you. How do they do that? Pat Wetzel ** 1:04:00 They're the website bump in the road.us. The mail is talk t a l k @thebumpintheroad.us. There's a ton of information on the website interviews, audio visual components, it's a great website quite honestly, please come and explore it. Michael Hingson ** 1:04:19 Well, I hope people will. Send us a Text Message.Ever wondered what would happen if Eddie Murphy had skipped "The Adventures of Pluto Nash"? We've got you covered! Join us as we put Eddie Murphy's filmography under the microscope, starting with the laughably ambitious flop "The Adventures of Pluto Nash." We crack jokes about Murphy's multiple roles and take a playful jab at Alec Baldwin's stealthy cameo. Fuel our fun debate on an alternative universe where names like Brendan Fraser, Bruce Willis, or even the late Chris Farley might have stepped into the spotlight – would it have been a game-changer for this sci-fi comedy?Grab your popcorn because our "Movies and Characters Chat" is nothing short of a rollercoaster. We dissect a film that could have doubled as a marathon – one long, breathless chase scene – and chew over the missed comedic opportunities. Did Rosario Dawson's casting play a part, or did the studio's scissors snip away the laughs? Oh, and if you're a fan of Luis Guzman, we're rallying behind his comedic chops, imagining him as Gomez Addams in "Wednesday," and comparing him to the legendary Raul Julia. We cap off this lively discussion by embracing the unfiltered joy of Eddie Murphy's performance in "Pluto Nash" – no holds barred.Closing out Andrew and I serve up a no-holds-barred review of a film that recently let us down, big time. Leo is a 2023 American animated musical comedy film directed by Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel and David Wachtenheim (in Marianetti and Wachtenheim's feature directorial debuts), written by Smigel, Adam Sandler, and Paul Sado, and produced by Sandler and Mireille Soria. The second animated feature from Sandler's production company Happy Madison Productions, it stars him in the titular voice role, alongside Bill Burr, Cecily Strong, Jason Alexander, Sadie Sandler, Sunny Sandler, Rob Schneider, Jo Koy, Allison Strong, Jackie Sandler, Heidi Gardner, Robert Smigel, and Nick Swardson. It tells the story of a tuatara longing for the wild and worried about dying who is taken home by different students per the assignment of a strict substitute teacher.Leo was released by Netflix on November 21, 2023 to generally positive reviews.Leo is a jaded old lizard with a heart of gold who's been stuck in the same Florida classroom for longer than he can remember, alongside his terrarium-mate Squirtle the turtle. He's watched generations of students come and go but feels like he's missed out on life. When Leo learns he only has one year left to live, he plans an escape to experience the world. Thanks to a new substitute teacher who task the kids with taking one classroom pet home for the weekend, Leo has a chance to escape. His hilarious attempt to head for freedom and him opening his mouth to break the one simple role that seems to be the theme in the movie, you can't let humans know animals can take, which is pretty dope, like imagine if that was the case in real life, talk about restrain. In Florida, Leo the tuatara and Squirtle the turtle are the class pets of a fifth-grade classroom at Fort Myers Elementary School and are prepared for another year with a new set of students. During a parent-teacher conference night, where the students' pregnant teacher, Mrs. Salinas, announces that she must go on maternity leave, Leo overhears one of the student's parents say that he's old, making him despair that he never accomplished anything with his life. The next day, Ms. Malkin, the students' strict, no-nonsense substitute, arrives and is quickly loathed by the students.Leo is taken home for the weekend by Summer, a girl who is highly talkative. While trying to make his escape, Leo accidentally reveals to Summer that he can talk, and suggests to her that she ask more questions after saying that her constant talking tires everyone out. As a result, Summer becomes more popular among her classmates. Soon enough, the students begin to request that they take Leo home with them, where they share with him their own personal dilemmas, to which Leo offers them life advice. Before long, each of the students have taken Leo home with them and offer them their phones so that they can keep in touch with him.Fed up with the attention Leo is getting, a jealous Squirtle decides to expose Leo by revealing that he can speak to all of them, as he lied that the only ones who could understand him are the ones he was taken home with. Feeling betrayed by this revelation, they decide to disregard him, and Ms. Malkin, having caught on that Leo can talk and that the students' changes in behavior are the result of his advice, decides to take him to her home. While at Ms. Malkin's home, Leo learns that the reason she's grouchy is because she never got to accomplish her dream of being a real teacher, always getting relegated to being a substitute. The next day, the school is having a history fair, and the students manage to win the grand prize of a field trip to Magic Land Park with their reenactments of famous historical figures. When she is praised for her work, Ms. Malkin, wanting to take all the credit, decides to abandon Leo at the Everglades, and proceeds to lie to the students by telling them that he abandoned them, much to their dismay, as they had wanted to apologize to him.As the students head to Magic Land Park, Squirtle catches up with them and reveals that Ms. Malkin lied about Leo, to which she confesses. Upon arriving at Magic Land Park, the students and Ms. Malkin hijack the bus so they can drive to the Everglades. Meanwhile, Leo, while trying to fit in with the wild animals, learns from other lizards that he can live to be more than 75 years old, reinvigorating him. While trying to find a way out, he suddenly encounters a congregation of alligators, but they are successfully scared off when the students arrive and reunite with Leo.On the final day of the school year, the graduating students ask Leo how they could get through middle school without his advice, to which he says that they just have to look out for each other. Ms. Malkin is given a full-time job as a teacher and is promptly assigned to the kindergarteners, with Leo and Squirtle as the class pets. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is an animated television series developed by Bryan Lee O'Malley and Ben David Grabinski for Netflix. The series is based on the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels written and drawn by O'Malley, with the entire main cast from the 2010 film adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, reprising their roles, while also serving as a joint sequel/remake to the graphic novel and film. The series was released on November 17, 2023, to critical acclaim. The series, set in Toronto, Canada, serves as an alternate retelling of the original Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series. Like in the original series, Scott Pilgrim, a bassist in an indie band, falls in love with Ramona Flowers, a mysterious delivery girl, attracting the attention of Ramona's seven evil exes. Things take an unexpected turn, however, when Scott loses his battle against Ramona's first evil ex Matthew Patel and is seemingly killed. As everyone's lives, including those of Ramona's evil exes, change drastically as a result, Ramona learns that Scott may still be alive and decides to investigate his disappearance.THIS COULD BE RIDICULOUS CARTOON I HAVE EVER SEEN, AND I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF SHITTY SHOWS, BUT THIS ONE TAKES THE CAKE!This here is a peal of trash in my opinion. 8 episodes, 4 hours down the drain but what the heck do I know. Apparently, this is an alternative ending to the original 2010 movie. I guess the cool thing is that every actor in the original repriced their role in this shit show, of course, even the original was still as stupid as this. So it's just retelling nonsense. Another cool aspect could be that it's designed like a game, it's got Mario brothers type of coins that pop out when you punch someone to death, and every fight has mortal combat or even street fight vibes. I guess what's missing is that “finish him” aspect. This shows how impactful the Hollywood strike has been, This cabbage is considered entertaining. Now before I say anything else about this show, Romona is a whore and Scott is a creep who dated a 15-year-old. And could also be mentally disturbed. Dude faked his death and kidnapped himself, to prevent himself from marrying a girl. That's crazy but that's not even the weird part. I mean like if a future version of me kidnapped me and told me my life would be shit if I dated a particular girl, I wouldn't even question him, in fact, I would instead ask him to compel a list of match results of all the world sports so I could make a huge fortune making bets. Now that more logical and positive way to use a time machine, not waste time on some girl. Who's a whore for that matter, hey 7 ex-boyfriends are not a lot of body's. but you should question the type of men she is pulling when she breaks up with them. these fools instead of moving on start a little club, a stupid league of Exes, and their sole mission is to fight and kill Ramona's future love interests I mean how pathetic can you get. SLY is a work of art, it doesn't only tell a story of legendary award winning; film director, screenwriter and action hero of the 80's and 90's “SLYVESTER STALLONE.”. He has a career that spans over five decades. If that's that make you a GOAT, I don't know what will. it somehow makes him immortal and mortal at the same time. The documentary shows, the vulnerabilities of a living legend.it shows his character not the role he played on motion picture but the man. The man behind the lens, the man before the words a written. In his purest moments. It brings out his true essences. The arrogance, the pride, the humility. The human not the millionaire and Hollywood mogul. But just a guy who had a dream, who work hard to make his dream a reality. It's beautiful. Its tear Jucker when you realise how much nonsense Hollywood movies have fallen. it's no longer about heart, passion and making relatable stories. It about making movies flashy and making tonnes of money. Story telling is a dying heart. And it's a wonderful to learn or to experience that Sly wrote, directed and produced, some of his great's moments on the big screen. To believe in yourself even when the odds are pinned against you. When they mock, ridicule you, trip and push you. That you keep on believing. For me that's really the message of this documentary and that no matter how successful you become it will always amount to nothing unless you have family and friends. Because ultimately that's what really matters. The people we love not the things we love. So, to me “Sly'', IT brings out his soul, it gives a detailed description of how much Sylvester Stallone gave it order to bring exceptional characters like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo to life. I only wish the documentary was longer. When I look back at my childhood, I look back with great fondness. It brings me to tears when I think that my father introduced to this wonderful world of movies. So, watching this and seeing sly talked about the trails and the huddlers he had to jump and cross to make these wonderful stories.I think about my father and the VCR, the tapes he rented from blockbuster and those movie rental joints. The anticipation of waiting for Friday and the weekend because we had no electricity. So, we powered the television with a generator. Slyvester stallion. He was so good. I couldn't separate him from the characters, we'd say, things like (while growing in fact some people still do that to this day.) “The new Rambo movie or rocky movie just came out” even though he was playing a completely different role, he was RAMBO. HE WAS ROCKY. with a whole different story line.he embodied the characters. So, much that they become real. You could almost touch them, while they were on screen. These are the types of films that resonate with the audience so much that, we become so involved in the story, you cry, laugh, jump with joy and you be enraged.whenever the character expresses an emotion. Its almost as if you were there with them. Like you part of the story somehow. I think that's what made Stallone so renowned. To make it even sweeter he wrote and directed it. Wow. Man was …. No man is talented. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
The start of this movie almost lost me as we just had Michael Fassbender ( the protagonist in this film whose actual name is never mentioned but, he uses various names throughout the movie, almost Jason Bourne-type of vibes) anyway, Michael delivers a never-ending narration while he waits to execute a hit. But then when I thought about the character, it made sense. David Fincher's ( the director, in case you wondering who that is) attention to detail throughout the entire movie is immaculate as every little thing plays an important part. This is also a very intelligent and smartly written movie that requires you to think, and for me at least, I really liked this as it made it a fun challenge to figure out certain elements in the film and to always pay attention to details.Plus the movie finds a way to make you feel like you're shadowing a real contract killer the whole time. The main character's narration is a unique touch, even in the normal everyday moments when he's constantly looking over his shoulder. The film's pace has a constant tension, with certain moments where it escalates rapidly into venomous action, yet the action never feels overdone and instead feels hyper-realistic.NOW PAY ATTENTIONI have a theory. This is a perfect misdirection trick the film creators made. You never get to know this unnamed assassin. You never get to know what makes him tick. That's the whole point. As a viewer, we normally project our own moral compass onto what we are watching. We think this is a revenge story. We think we are rooting for this character who is fighting back because his loved ones were attacked. But really, i don't think that's the point, I think it's something darker. Now listen Throughout the movie, the killer repeats his rules. He never mentions anything personal. Nothing about his home or girlfriend. He doesn't care about anyone. People are not important. He IS a paid killer after all. The Killer tells us his job bores him at the very beginning and hopes for a chance to experiment with more creative ways of killing. He is basically telling us he is craving a challenge. I believe he subconsciously makes the error of botching up the first kill on purpose to liven up things, to see what would happen & push him to the extreme of his abilities. It's as if he has created an excuse to go on a killing spree around the world. By the end, he realizes he loves his job again. This is why he doesn't kill the client as he knows this would destroy future gigs. The final scene is him poisoning his girlfriend's coffee. The girlfriend was his only weakness & vulnerable target. His handlers immediately for her after he botched the job. NOW he has learned this, now to avoid it from happening again he kills her.. but then again i could be wrong. ANYWAYSIn conclusion, "The Killer" is a must-watch thriller drama film that combines suspense, brilliance, and stellar performances to create an unforgettable cinematic experience. If you appreciate a well-crafted narrative that keeps you guessing until the very end, this film is a must-see. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Patreon.com/RememberTheGame It's the Halloween season, so we gotta freaky here at RTG, and I can't think of anything scarier than The Addams Family for the NES. Seriously, this game will fuck you up. I genuinely think the skeleton of a good game is buried in here. You control Gomez Addams and explore the family mansion looking for your missing family members. There's puzzle solving, a little bit of exploration, and some fun platforming. It's just weighed down by horrible collision detection and brutal difficulty. Even by NES standards. That said, I'm a sucker for 'NES tough' games, and my brother and I used to rent this one all the time when e were kids. I'm rolling solo this week and ranting about one of the toughest games I played on the NES, and I hope you like it. More importantly, I hope the stupid Addams Family song gets stuck in your head like it is in mine. Just awful... And before I yell at a freezer (seriously), I deliver another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks which consoles has had the best exclusive lineup in this stacked year of games? Do I have any nerdy hobbies aside from gaming? And how do I keep track of all the games I've played over the years? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! We're heading into Father's Day, so there's no better time to take a look back at some of the great fathers in television and film history, as well as some more forgettable father figures. Our list touches on a wide range of fathers, including Atticus Finch from "To Kill A Mockingbird," Phil Dunphy from "Modern Family," Walter White from "Breaking Bad" and Frank Costanza from "Seinfeld." We won't give away the entire list, but rest assured there is some discussion of Homer Simpson, Jack Pearson, Darth Vader, Mike Brady, Tony Soprano and Cliff Huxtable. Yes, we're all over the place. In other topics, the show covers "Jury Duty" and season 2 of "The Bear," plus new movies coming out including "Elemental" and "The Flash." Where to watch "Jury Duty" on Freevee and Amazon Prime Video "The Bear" on FX and Hulu "Elemental" in theaters "The Flash" in theaters About the show Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, a longtime entertainment reporter who is now the editor of the Sioux City Journal in Iowa and Terry Lipshetz, a senior producer for Lee Enterprises based in Madison, Wisconsin. Episode transcript Note: The following transcript was created by Adobe Premiere and may contain misspellings and other inaccuracies as it was generated automatically: Welcome everyone to another episode of Streamed and Screened and Entertainment podcast about movies and TV from Lee Enterprises. I'm Terry Lipshetz, a senior producer at Lee and co-host of the program with my entertainment journalism father figure. Bruce, you're editor of the Sioux City Journal and a longtime entertainment reporter. Hey, Papa. How are you? We'll try to talk to you. Yeah, it's you know what? I've seen so much and been around so long that you can drop a name, and I think I can grab it. I think it's that easy. Yeah, I got to tell you, you know, even though we're entering that kind of dull season where all I watch is American Ninja Warriors, last night, I truly like that. I that is my obsession. And I couldn't make it past the first one. But I loved watching that thing. And I never, ever, ever see the last episode of that. Never. I never know if anybody won or if it's it's just that whole thrill of the hunt. But last night, I decided I was going to binge something because I've heard too much about it. And that's jury duty. Jury duty. I've been called for jury duty, but I've never I've never served on jury duty. But it's a reality show where everybody in the show, except one guy, is an actor. So there's this one gets kind of a Punk'd thing where they are trying to, you know, show how he would react during this situation, how he doesn't catch on. I don't know. But James Marsden is in it as one of the people called to jury duty. And he's kind of an elevated sense of aspect of himself. You see this kind of pull of himself actor who you like, you know, third tier credits that they mention. Very funny. And I was just I was smitten with it. It's not necessarily well done, but there are so many moments that are such laugh out loud, funny moments that you got to see it. It's on Amazon Prime and Freebie had it first, and I think you can find it through Amazon, but it is eight episodes and you just it it's like eating candy and I had such a great time looking at that that then you go to the next dig where you try to look up these people online to see if you've seen them in something else. Because some of the actors looked vaguely familiar. And I think if I were that one guy, the first question I would have is why are we sequestering the jury for this little kind of two bit case? Why are we here for 15 days or whatever the amount of time was? But they don't seem to question it. It's like, well, I got a vacation and I'll be doing this, and here we are. And then when they start spelling out the case and the guy who is, you know, defending the guy drops everything that the audio visual stuff doesn't work. You would be I would be very curious, like, something's up with this. And then I would look in my hotel room and think, I think this place is bugged. It's got to be bugged somehow. But I do watch it because I think it is one of those kind of fun little summer things that takes no effort out of you. You don't feel like you're worn out after you've watched it. You do feel like it's something that you go, okay, like I had a good time. I love those little ones. They'll pop up on Netflix here and there. Hulu or Prime, as you said, there's no effort, there's no thought process. I like like there's a few of them that'll show up on Netflix. They'll do those little documentaries like they the kid that wanted to buy the Harrier jet with the Pepsi points and they did four episodes on it and I couldn't stop watching it because it's just it's just a fun little romp. So, I mean, I'm into selling Sunset on Netflix. That said, you know, Los Angeles area high end real estate show, and it looks like there's two bad little real estate offers on the sunset Strip. It looks like, you know, you could have a 7-Eleven next door. That's how dinky it looks. And yet they act like they are all, you know, catering to everybody who starts at $1,000,000,000. And they basically seem to show the same house. It's like the same kind of URLs. All the houses in Los Angeles look alike. But selling sunset is another one of my binge binge. Crazes like that where you don't think and I think I need that after work is where you don't think at all and you let these people kind of just wash over you. So for a make a reality show, remember, no thinking, wash over you. Here you go. Anything else you're watching or any movies on the horizon? Well, there are some things coming up I've been looking at, but I've not yet to tell. Not yet. And they had the big premiere last night of Indiana Jones. And so we're going to start hearing a lot about that. If you haven't buried yourself already, please get on to one of those apps and you can put your picture inside a thing where it calls you a Barbie of some sort. Nice. That's out there in case you're looking for fun. Elemental. Have you seen Elemental or is that that's about to come? Elemental? No, I did go last week to Transformers and I will admit it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Okay. I'm still not going to see it. No. What it does, though, you know, these they make no symptoms. They absolutely make no sense. And it started out with a toy that made no sense. And then they decided there was a film franchise. But in this one, they kind of back up and give you a little history about the things and why they are what they are and how they came into being and why they want to dominate the world. So there's a little kind of a tutorial, if you will, that helps you understand this. And then they go on their little journey and transform into gorillas this time. Okay. Okay. And that is Optimus Primal. Not Optimus Primate, but Optimus Primal. Interesting. Interesting. I am looking forward to Indiana Jones. We've talked about this a few times that I've been hearing reviews, very mixed. Like some people are loving it, some people not so much. So I'm really curious to see where that one falls. I could see that one getting very mixed reviews from critics, but doing very well with fans also gets critic proof. This is not one of those things that no matter how much people rant and rave, they're still going through it. Absolutely. And I will dying to see it as soon as I can get to it. I am absolutely going to go see it. I'm just like a hardcore Lucasfilm. Indiana Jones Star Wars junkie. So I think they're absolutely, absolutely. Somewhere I have a whip and a hat, and that is one of the early warheads that's in my basement full of crap. You'll find it out. If you ever want to excavate, that can be your Indiana Jones story. You go down there, dig out that stuff you got. Here's that whip. He was talking about. Yep, there's a whip down there. But you're going to see Elemental this way. Yeah. Father's Day. I love the idea that you get to pick the movie. I know. Well, the options were. Hey, Dad, what would you like to do this weekend? And I'm thinking, I'm not sure. And then when my daughter says, Well, let's go see Elemental, so I'm okay, that sounds fine. The other option would was was Little Mermaid, and that was Oh, no or no on that one. And and the Barbie movie isn't out yet, which I, I kind of want to see that I'm kind of. You want to see that. I want to see that one. So and I told them, I said I will absolutely go with you to go see the Barbie movie. But Elemental, I feel like you can't really can't usually go wrong with a Pixar movie. I love most of them. They've been a little bit more missed and hit the last couple of years. But, you know, and they did just fire a whole bunch of Pixar people, like long time Pixar people, Disney. So that would be a great opening, wouldn't it? Yeah. Back. You'll have to pay for your own popcorn. Exactly. Yeah. I don't know if you saw that, Bruce, but. But Disney, because they've been cutting down because the revenues haven't been quite there and they wiped out a huge chunk of the Pixar Department and it included a lot of folks that had been there from the beginning. Even they had a whole studio in Orlando that if you went to the Hollywood studios aspect of Disney World, you could watch them making, you know, God knows what. But it was animated films and they were actually doing the work there. And then they that one down and they shut some other ones down and then they went over to another country, did things there. So who knows with that? And they almost shut it down before the original Little Mermaid came out. So it's hard to tell. I'm sure somebody in the in the money department looks and says, I think we need to make some cuts here. And the lowest profit area was. And that's where they go. Exactly. There is another program coming out soon. Now, you have not gotten any advance screening of this, but you and I are both a bit of a fan of the show. The Bear season to come, it affects you. I have talked to people about the bear. I have done interviews for the bear. I've written a story about the upcoming bear, but they are very guarded about season two. They are not letting out any kind of screeners. Now, that always is a bad sign when you do that with a movie. If you don't let anybody see it in advance, it's like, oh, we're worried about the about the kind of reviews we might get. But I think this one, because they've got really great people working on it. I think what it hinges on is what this new restaurant is, because if you may remember, this is spoiler alert. So turn me off. They found a lot of money at the end of the episode. The final episode of last season. So they have the money to be able to make upgrades to this little the beef or whatever it's called restaurant. So that it's not was kind of a hit and run sandwich shop. It's much more than that. And I think they don't want you to know what it's going to look like. I don't think they want you to know how the plot is going to unfold. And I can still see chaos in there in the kitchen. It'll still be there. But it's that kind of surprise element that they want to say. And that premieres next week. Yeah, it's it looks like the 20, maybe the 22nd on Fox and then a day later on Hulu, I got into the show pretty hardcore last year. I didn't see it when it dropped immediately, but my brother reached out, one of my brothers who's a chef, and he said, You know, that's how this always works. Like I go see the journalism things. And then, you know, he goes, sees the food ones, but he's like, Hey, you go watch them. Yeah, exactly. But he, he, he thought it was really good and just mentioned, hey, you know, if you're looking for something, then check out watch it. And I got hooked pretty hard. Now, I found with the show that I couldn't watch really more than one episode because by the time I picked it up, it was already season one was already done. So but I couldn't binge it because I would get through one episode and there's so much yelling because it's in a kitchen, there's a lot moving on and they're yelling at each other and they're bickering because they're family or longtime friends and that kind of thing. And I just felt exhausted, like emotionally drained by the end of it. But it's a fun it's a comedy and it's a good feeling. But it's a good feeling. Yeah. Like it wasn't a horrible dream. Like I'm never going to come back to this. It just felt like, you know, I gave the show my all for 30 minutes of sitting here doing nothing, and I just can't go anymore. I need I need like a one day buffer before I come back on episode two. Well, and this was one of those kobin shows that they were in a bubble and they weren't able to do a lot of, you know, exterior things, a lot of stuff outside of their little bubble. So they stayed in it and they had a culinary producer, somebody who showed them how to do like chopping or where you would grab for a bowl or where pots and pans needed to be located. So if your brother has a lot of like technical knowledge about all those things, it was absolutely technically correct. And they all felt that they had some degree of facility with all of that. But what the goal of the producer was was to throw you into that atmosphere so you didn't know anything. So that's why you felt the tension is because you felt like you were right in the middle of that kitchen and all that trouble happening. And one thing that he discovered, well, he was like, you know, planning all of this show is that there were a lot of times he would order Uber eats and then it would be like, you can't we what is this? And that figured into one of the episodes where, you know, suddenly they get a jillion orders at once and they can't keep up with it and so they'll just turn off that app again. They won't come. So that was a surprise to me when I first I thought, wait a minute, is this why I'm not able to order at 7:00 at night? They've shut me off. That's what the trick is. So there are a lot of things that we can learn in the process of this, but it also makes you very appreciative of what goes into a kitchen. I think I saw Bob ODENKIRK is listed as a guest star for season two. I don't know in what capacity because obviously they won't screen it. But coming off a better call. Saul, I guess he's looking for work. Yeah, well, he is. And he had the lucky egg. Yeah, he's getting all over the place. And that will be, by the way, if you want to jump ahead to that concept, the they're really doing a lot of pitches for what will be nominated for Emmys because the Emmy Awards will be coming out pretty shortly, the nominations. And will a Better Call Saul get something in its last season because it's been really cheated a lot. But will the bear get something? That's another one, because technically it's classified as a comedy, but it plays really dark. And and then you have ones like Ted Lasso who supposedly are wrapping it up. You give them one more shot, you know, So there are a lot of questions that are rolling around the Emmys right now. Well, we'll have to come back at that as soon as the nominations come out to new movies we have or Mantle and we have The Flash coming out this week. And you could pick the Flash. I could have and you did. Kids didn't want to go see that one. Well, I think there are some parts that maybe you'd go, kids, maybe we shouldn't be watching that. Probably. Yeah. Yeah, they would. They wouldn't understand. They wouldn't understand the Michael Keaton aspect of it either. They're not going to get excited. Yeah. Who's that old guy? That's Batman. And it's not Batman. That's somebody else. I think Superboy super be in it. Yeah, I'm not going to say, but yeah. So there are so elementals all fresh and new and it's a not unlike the inside out which took on emotions. Right. And this is another one where it's element s so air, wind, water all that is kind of swirled together into one thing about learning something from yourself. I don't know I Good luck. Thanks. This better be a popcorn movie. It's. Well, I'm bringing back the bucket. Remember, I bought my my annual bucket. That will give you popcorn galore. Exactly. I'm coming back with my refill and everything. So that's my Father's Day. Your Jurassic Park bucket. Exactly. So that's my Father's Day. So we also figured for this week we're going to talk a little bit about Father's Day. So we're going to just kind of segway from that theme over to the big day and and talk a little bit about some of our favorite fatherly figures from TV and movie history. What do you got for us? Well, you know, whenever you say who is the best father in film, it goes to one and one only. Atticus Finch from To Kill a mockingbird is Bar None the best dad of all times in films. That's what whenever they survey people. And then maybe because that's the one they remember most. There are others. There are many, many others. Field of dreams, you know. I mean, you could just go down the line, but I think Atticus Finch is the one that people are most tied to in terms of Father, do you agree with me or I? It has been so long since I've seen that movie. I don't know if I can agree. I've seen it. I've absolutely seen it. It's just been so, so long now and it's been on a a a theater tour because it was on Broadway several years ago. And Richard Thomas from The Waltons is playing Atticus Finch. And, you know, it's it's one of those cases where dad tries it's, you know, set years and years and years ago, tries to convince his children that, you know, maybe sometimes the people that you suspect are right aren't necessarily right. And then they rewrote the or brought out an earlier version of the book. And that had a different take on things. But it's Gregory Peck. Come on. Gregory Peck. Yeah. You wrong? Gregory Peck has always And maybe he felt that that was limiting, too. In the later films he made. He did MacArthur after that. So there are all these kind of larger than life real heroes. I think he played Lincoln at one point. And so I think that kind of dogged him, if you will. But he was like the perfect dad. Now, who did you think was a great movie, Dad? A great movie, dad for me. You had mentioned Field of Dreams, and I always kind of come back to that movie. It's a movie about fathers and sons relationships. It's a movie that I watched just a few days after my my dad passed away earlier this year. And it's something that we watch because he he died in, you know, march right around the start of the baseball season. It's a movie I go back to year after year. And I also think, you know, for myself as somebody who's in his upper forties and getting a little bit older and but I have kids and, you know, it's a little bit of a midlife crisis kind of movie, too. You know, it's it's like you're maybe in that job, which isn't as fulfilling as you thought it was going to be or you're not progressing through life. You know, you had all these dreams as a kid. You wanted to be a baseball player or a movie star or a rock star, or maybe just be sitting on a pile of cash doing whatever. And here he's just an average guy farming, and he's having a midlife crisis and trying to find a way to reconnect his dad. So, you know, Kevin Costner, I thought, really did a great job of that role. It's one as I said, I go back to that year after year after year to watch it and I get choked up every time I watch it at the end when he's just going out to play catch with his dad. Yeah, yeah. It's a touch. It can really it can really get you when you need that. But there are other ones, you know. Clark Griswold. Yeah. He's a nearly good dad. Come on. He's trying to give his family the kind of vacation that they've always wanted. Yeah, if things go wrong. But his intentions as a father are good, I think. Yes. Then you go to Steve Martin from Father of the bride. He wants to make sure all of that pulls off are right. You have the dad from Mrs. Doubtfire, Mr. Mom, Finding Nemo. Yeah, and that's a good one. There are good dads in there. The one that I hadn't really thought of recently. Minari. Do you remember that? Did you see Minari about a family that moves to They're in an Asian family to move to the Midwest and and they're farming and everything kind of goes wrong. But the dad wants to make sure everything is right. It won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, a woman who plays the grandmother. And that dad was a good dad. You know, Ethan Hawke in boyhood, if you remember. Oh, that movie. Yeah, right. And then we get to The Godfather. Carmen, can you be better than The Godfather? Very overly protective. Dad's there. Yeah, He's the one that you touch. My kid. I kill you. Yeah, well, and even the The Godfather Part two, when Michael Corleone slams the door, not even a slam. It's just more of a a hard shot. And Diane Keaton, like I'm the dad, the cutting. You want your mom, you've made your choice. Yeah, And parenthood, if you're that and then one that's going to cross over. Now, when I talk about this is Friday Night Lights, the movie Taylor the coach. Now in the movie it was Billy Bob Thornton, but in the TV series, you cannot get better as a dad than Eric Taylor. He was a dad to all those kids on the team. And I kid you not. That is one of those shows that I. I have the entire box set that I will if I need to can go back to that because it's so inspirational and it's one that I can't watch the end because I don't want it over. But they talk all the time about rebooting it, but there might be a class reunion with that. But Eric are three Taylors in TV that you want to think about Tim Taylor, Andy Taylor and Eric Taylor. Okay. Andy Griffith, Come on. Andy Taylor was the best dad from my childhood. He was always so protective, so fun, so willing to do whatever. Great. Tim The tool man. Taylor Come on. He was like the fun dad that you could climb, right? And then we get to my Eric Taylor from Friday Night Lights. Those are three big TV TV dads that that resonate the John Hughes dads, too, because we've talked about John Hughes movies previously, the Dan Aykroyd and John Candy and the Great outdoors, just constantly trying to one up each other or at least John Candy, just trying to keep up with Dan Aykroyd. Right. That was always fun and trying to eat the £96 steak. Right? Right. There's nothing on that plate but fat and grizzle. And then you look at the bad dads ones we'd find on TV. Homer Simpson, come on. Does it get worse than Homer? I don't know about Red Forman from that seventies show. Oh, he was kind of always grumpy and and barking orders at people. And, you know, one day that I really hated Mike Brady from the Brady Bunch that Brady anything he just sat there and he was like doing architecture stuff for the kids were whatever but I really thought he was a bad dad if you were picking them out and more recently on TV, Jack Pearson is a good dad. Oh, yes, right. Yes, This is us. This is us. Yes, he is that all-American dad. He everything is always positive, can do anything wrong. And he would be willing to go to the ends for anyone. I don't know. When we first saw him bad in the course of that series. No, I mean, he might have done things that were like. But I don't think you could ever classify him as a bad dad. Still makes me nervous every time my wife pulls out the crock pot, though you don't wear it out of the house. You know, I'm not looking at about it was so angry. It's same and same. It's a slow cooker. It's fine. Oh, man, you know, You know who I always loved for? There's a couple of dads. I wouldn't necessarily call them good dads, but they were just to me, very entertaining TV dads. Frank Costanza by Jerry Taylor from Seinfeld. And then the relationship between Ray Romano, Peter Boyle and Everybody Loves Raymond. I thought that connection was just really especially coming from a new York background, the the complaining about everything and just a very relatable relationship for me. You know, it's funny because in the new series Barb Kiss with Pete Davidson, he kind of has this thing, you know, in real life. He lost his dad in 911, right? He had this kind of projection, if you will, with Ray Romano and Everybody Loves Raymond. And you see kind of a sense of that in this show. And Ray Romano does a kind of a cameo bit in the in the thing. But it is interesting. What about Phil Dunphy from Modern Family, isn't he like every dad who tries too hard? Yes. I never could quite figure out if I liked him or not through the whole series. Like there would be some weeks where you just love Phil Dunphy, but then other weeks where he's just so ridiculous that I couldn't put up with him. And that was a show, too. I love Modern Family. I don't think I watched the final season. I think I kind of tapped out. Oh, no. Yeah, you get that? It hit that point where I just. I saw enough and it was kind of the same thing for me, episode after episode, where it just kind of lost me that last year. And I just said, you know, I'm good. We peaked. Yeah. Is there a dad that you relate to? What kind of a dad are you? I'm not Darth Vader that I know people yet. Not yet. Who am I? I do think I am a little bit of a rake in, Sela. I'm not ready to take up my backyard yet, but I feel like. Like a you know, I'm kind of in in that point in my life where I'm things aren't always what they were meant to be. And I've had to go through some changes here and there. And, you know, can I this has always been my theory because I'm so old that I can have that Yoda like turnabout experience in your twenties. Anything's possible, right? In the thirties, you realize I got to get something done or else I'm going to be kind of wasting this life. Forties. You feel like, Oh, did I make a mistake and go the wrong way? Am I? Should I regroup and start over fifties? You think you know what? I don't care. I have made my point. And in the sixties you're just glad you're around. So I'm still I'm still okay. But it's it's that kind of you know, and it's like class reunions where you go, well, I've got to prove to them that I've done something or, you know, whatever, and you find usually if you go to a class reunion, you'll find that the person that you really didn't see as the most successful is the most successful. It could have been. The kid who was quiet in the back, got C's and didn't really cause a wave. And the one that you thought was the most likely to succeed maybe didn't. But look at those. Look at those ears and see what you if you don't agree with me on that, because I find that in the twenties you were just like, Oh, I can have fun, but I better hurry up because I've got to do something with my life so that it makes sense. And that's the thirties where you're like all freaked about what it is. And then the forties, you're sadly for a little something. And then like I say, the fifties and sixties weren't we don't care and you can easily badmouthed people in the older years too. That's always good. I've got a couple of years still until I hit my fifties but I'll I'll give that some thought for just know that that's where your head is so great where you don't give a damn that I have that and I like I can hardly wait until it's the unfiltered years. The seventies in the eighties when when I can just say whatever I think about somebody or doubt, worry about it, let it go. That's my my grandfather, who's 93, my last living grandparent, and he just doesn't care. He just totally unfiltered. Yeah, I think you look a little fat. Don't you? And you go, Wait a minute, You're not supposed to say that. You're supposed to be nice, right? Yeah. I remember even with my in-laws, one of my wife's grandmothers who passed away a number of years ago, the one of the last time I saw her before she passed away. She's like, You've put on some weight since the last time I saw you. And I'm like, okay, we're we're good here. If a whale came in the room, you wouldn't say those kind of things, right? So, yeah, but you'd say, My God, in your head, this one really looks like it got out of hand. But in your mind, Oh, you. You look like you're so healthy and you're having such a good time. How are things going? You know, that's what I'm waiting for is the unfiltered. I'm just saying it like it is. So. You look marvelous, Terry. Thank you. I appreciate it. One last bother on my list that we didn't touch on Tony Soprano. Yeah. And is he a good dad? I don't know that he is. I think he's very protective of his family. I also thought, you know, he was a great dad when he took Meadow up to New England to go looking at colleges. And he was very, very much wants to make it a dad daughter weekend, help her find a school. He found a rat. He took care of that, cleaned himself up after the murder, and then went ahead and finished a very nice weekend with his daughter. So I think he could have a moment there. You know, he took care each care business, but also took care of family at the same time. Don't you think that his wife had a stronger influence on the kids than he did? Yes or no? I think that Carmela and there are all these similar types of movies and shows that get into that mafia stuff. It's it's always the same where they try to paint the spouse as kind of like, you know, some unwitting bystander. But they're fully they know everyone. They know everything. She know she knows where the guns are hidden in the wall. So, yeah, it's like The Real Housewives of New Jersey, as much as they act like they don't know what's going on in their businesses, they're right there. And when they go to court, they're just as guilty as the husband. So I've probably seen every episode of The Sopranos at least three times because I watched it when it came out initially. And then I also a long time ago was writing a weekly column for newspapers in New Jersey with my thoughts about The Sopranos each week. So I'd watch it then. And then a few years ago, I actually rewatched the whole series again, and I thought it held up. Other than the flip phones, you know, the cell phone technology changed. But I thought by and large, the show itself held up very well. It was always the same thing with Carmela, where she would get angry. Tony got a change and then he would show up with a Porsche Cayenne or a diamond necklace. And then she's like, I love you, Tony. And then I would it would totally change her demeanor for about three episodes, and then it would kind of go back in the other direction. That's the secret. That's the secret that a father learns about a mother. Yep. Right. Absolutely. Okay. Red Forman was a loud, mouthy one. But then you get to Ward Cleaver. What in the hell did Ward Cleaver ever do? When he put on the suit? He went to work and he came home, and then he was served a drink or whatever, and he read the newspaper and had to be kind of the judge of the kids went, Oh, you better go see your father. And then he would kind of like take an eyebrow to them and, and well, now, Beaver, what happened? All that kind of Well, weren't Cleaver was a big a a big fake he did nothing so yet he gets on the list of the best of the best dads and then I'd be remiss not to mention Cliff Huxtable. Oh, yeah. I didn't know what to do with him. What? I loved it. Well, now we're we're doing the character, not the not the person. All right. But what I loved about Cliff Huxtable is that the kids tried to schmooze him and, you know, they would try to use that. Oh, dad, you're just so wonderful. And you kids are just stupid. He would just call them out on things. And it was like it was a dad who was on to them. And I don't think we had seen dads who were on to their kids and how they just kind of work their wiles because I'll bet any money that your daughters work you. Oh yeah, yeah. You know, And yet here was a dad who said, No, I'm not buying into that. And I don't know what you know his job. Well, what exactly was it that he did? Because he stayed at home all the time. But I did enjoy watching that dynamic. I liked the dynamic. And then the wife who had the upper hand on him was a an interesting kind of dynamic. I thought Walter White, could he be considered a good dad or a bad? That I don't know. I was wasn't sure if I wanted to put him on my list or not. I one hand I thought he was you know, he's thinking about himself. He's he's presumably terminally ill and he's looking out for the long term good of his family. But he also had a lot of flaws in his planning and execution. Can bad equal good? I don't know. That's one of those things. All right, then what about the monster dads like Gomez Addams or Herman Munster? They were fun dads. Do they fit in there? Do they? You know, and I don't saw I didn't see any kind of parenting that went on with them. No, there was none. I always I think I preferred Gomez Addams. So as a father, yeah, Herman was stupid. Yeah. And he was just kind of bumbling around, which isn't unlike a lot of men currently. We've still got Dan Conner on the Conners and he has changed over the years. I've probably seen two episodes total. I think I watched maybe one episode when they rebooted it as the new Roseanne show, and then not long ago, just almost by accident, I kind of watched a bit of an episode of The Conners and it was fine. I liked him as a dad in the original series, but I also thought he was a classic blue collar, right? Do we know what he even did? I don't even remember. But he was a working man's dad. You work at some kind of factory plant, whatever. But he was. He was a solid Midwest. Yeah, working dad. It was. He would make sure they stayed afloat no matter what. It meant that he had to do another job or had to do something else. They were going to stay afloat. And I like that he did in Indulged Roseanne in her kind of pipe dreams. Mm hmm. Which was interesting. But I think things are a little a little back to normal with the new series. I don't know. But how about Full House Danny Tanner? Yeah, he was a little too upbeat for me. I don't know that the show was fun to watch as a kid. My daughters watch that show on stream. You know, we we turned on Fuller House for about 30 seconds and then flipped it off. And I, I at the time when it came out, we thought it was a little too grown up for my kids. Yeah. So they could probably watch it now. They watch they watched the original series Front to back and loved it when it aired originally. I enjoyed it. I watch it now and the shows are to me are very tough to watch because I think it's just it's not realistic. Like you can afford this house. It's probably $8 million and San Francisco, your buddies are living with you. What's that all about? It's just it was a strange, you know, in retrospect, a very strange show to me. A lot of memories with those characters. But yeah, well, that's. Oh, and then more recently, Blackish Dre. Interesting. But I found that he yelled a lot and I did not watch that show. So yeah, I thought he yelled too much for his own good and was always kind of flustered and I didn't really care for that. I like Anthony, though. I think he's a great actor, but I don't know that he necessarily he was more in the line of George Jefferson. I want to be honest about all that. And yeah, and so right now, I don't know that there is a dad like Jack Pearson where you would go, okay, that's our big TV dad right now. What about All in the Family? There's a classic TV dad for you. Yeah. And I don't know that he was really that fatherly knew. He didn't think Meat Head was good enough for his daughter. Right? I mean, he's protecting his daughter, but I don't know that he ever did anything. You know, particularly I don't know Dad, like, know about when he was in Archie's place. But I Yeah, I just I don't think he's considered a dad at all. No, I think that's more of the show is, you know, the Archie Bunker character very ground breaking for the time, you know, to tackle issues with race and in all of that during the seventies. But beyond that, it does a great job of capturing I mean, I don't think those episodes could ever run today because there were too much political discourse about the points that they take. But it is fascinating when you look at them in retrospect and you think, my God, these were things that were being thrown out on the television airwaves when we were just, I guess, naive. Yeah, a lot has changed since then that is. I don't know which you could do it. Is that the last? Yeah, I think that's about it on my list. You covered a lot of ground there. I had a few in mind Again, Darth Vader. Not the best, Dad. He did try to reconcile with his son at the end. Okay, but now think about this. Were we just duped into thinking he's bad because of the perspective we got? Or was he just. Yeah, you sound very Obi-Wan Kenobi there. It's just from a different point of view, right? I mean, from his perspective, he was probably a great dad. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Know, he slaughtered all the younglings. That's all we know. He went into the Jedi temple. And what you won't do for your kids, right? I know, Right, Exactly. We're going to go refill that bucket, though. That's right in the middle of the mantle. When you think, oh, I can't watch this anymore, you go back and get an extra fill. I am looking forward to my popcorn. Any anything on the horizon, Bruce, before we sign off, you know, I really do want to dig into the flash, so if you get a chance, zip over to flash and see that because that has been such a troubled film all during its duration. And now let's see if the hype actually if that was part of the hype or if indeed this was that film that had to be released because it is so great. So if you get a chance, please see that. And we'll talk the Flash next week, because I really want to know where you said I'm going to try to get there because my family is heading out of town, but I'm sticking around. So maybe I will. I will have a date date evening with me, myself and I. And there you go and bring that bucket And I absolutely bring in the bucket. All right, Bruce, thanks again for another episode. Well, Terry, Happy Father's Day, too. And have lots of fun. And to all the fathers and listeners out there or the fathers that want to be fathers or whatever it might be, happy Father's Day.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this holiday edition of Parallax Views, Robbie Martin of Media Roots Radio and the documentary A Very Heavy Agenda returns to spread the holiday cheer of a Christmas classic... the 1984 Joe Dante/Steven Spielberg collaboration Gremlins! Yes, Gremlins is a Christmas movie, especially if Die Hard is considered a Christmas movie! It's a festive conversation about the little green monsters that terrorized our nightmares as kids and the furry little guy we all wanted as a pet that Furby ripped off! Robbie admits he used to confuse E.T.: The Extraterrestrial and Gremlins. J.G. tries to avoid getting the horny police called on him while talking about his early childhood crush Phoebe Cates. Robbie explains the use of cats in Jerry Goldsmith's score and pitches his prequel idea that'd call back to Phoebe Cates' eerie, spooky, chilling monologue about why she hates Christmas. We chat about Corey Feldman showing up dressed as a Christmas tree, the greatest movie scene to ever utilize Do You Hear What I Hear?, Gremlins' blending of horror and comedy, the holiday spirit in Gremlins, "That Guy" character actor Dick Miller as Murray Futterman, and the eternal question of whether Gremlins is racist, is Gremlins a critique of capitalism and/or consumerism, and more Then we switch gears to the completely absolutely off-the-wall, insanely zany sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Robbie and I talk about the meta/parody nature of the movie, the revenge of Dick Miller's Murray Futterman, Star Trek's Robert Picardo, John Glover as an eccentric billionaire modeled after Ted Turner and Donald Trump (who manages to be so insanely energetic and naive that the originally meant-to-be-villainous role become something else entirely), Joe Dante and his love of cartoons and animation (including the Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck short), Zach Galligan's character Billy Peltzer getting a sexually harassed by boss vis-a-vis an under-the-table foot job attempt, the two different "breaking the fourth wall" interruptions for the theatrical and VHS releases of the movie, Hammer Studios horror legend Christopher Lee as a mad scientist, a blink-and-you'll miss it cameo from John Addams of Gomez Addams fame, the cameos from pro wrestler Hulk Hogan and movie critic Leonard Maltin, how the satire of TV was so ahead of its time that some jokes don't even hit the same anymore, the movie's lampooning of technology, Gizmo the Mogwai getting the Baby Yoda treatment, Rambo and Gremlins 2, and more! We then end discussing the films of Joe Dante, the director behind both movies. We talk Burying the Ex, Innerspace, Matinee with John Goodman, Dante's two Masters of Horror episodes, the little seen TV movie The Second Civil War with Phil Hartman as the President of the United States, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and, of course, Small Soldiers.

The Addams Family is back. This time thanks to director Tim Burton. The trailer for the upcoming spinoff series "Wednesday" has been released and it's very Burton-esque. "You" star Jenna Ortega plays Wednesday, the gothlike teenage daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams who has psychic abilities. She is attending Nevermore Academy, where, she hints, she will face some "mayhem." "Little did I know that I'd be stepping into a nightmare," Ortega says in the trailer. "Full of mystery, mayhem and murder. I think I'm going to love it here." The series also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Luis Guzmán as Gomez and Isaac Ordonez as Wednesday's brother Pugsley. Victor Dorobantu plays Thing, and George Burcea plays Lurch. Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the '90s films, is set to appear in the series. The series will feature eight episodes and Burton will direct four. Taco Bell customer holds up drive-thru after ordering '$300 worth of tacos': 'Ordered one of everything'. He was 80. Adams died Thursday in New York of complications from sepsis, his wife, Marilyn Adams, told The Hollywood Reporter. Adams jolted the world of comic books in the late 1960s and early '70s with his toned and sinewy take on heroes, first at DC with a character named Deadman, then at Marvel with the X-Men and the Avengers, then back at DC with his most lasting influence, Batman. MCU – MARVEL STUDIOS ‘Spider-Man' Director Jon Watts Exits Marvel's ‘Fantastic Four' https://deadline.com/2022/04/spider-man-jon-watts-exits-marvel-fantastic-four-film-1235013110/ EXCLUSIVE: Jon Watts has withdrawn as the director of Fantastic Four, the reinvention of the venerable Marvel Comics series at Marvel Studios and Disney. Watts just directed Spider-Man: No Way Home, the Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios film that grossed $1.89 billion to become the sixth highest-grossing film of all time. Nothing sinister here; Watts just needs a break from the superhero realm after completing the Spidey trilogy with Tom Holland and Zendaya. He had expected to make Fantastic Four his next film, the third feature iteration of that franchise and first since Disney acquired Fox, which controlled the franchise. Watts has spent the better part of the last decade directing and promoting the Spider-Man films, after being hired off Cop Car, a small-budget indie thriller that premiered at 2015 Sundance. He needs a breather. Both Watts and Marvel confirmed his exit, and said that it is amicable. ‘The Marvels' and ‘Ant-Man 3' Swap Release Dates in 2023 https://variety.com/2022/film/news/the-marvels-ant-man-the-wasp-quantumania-release-date-swap-1235254707/ Marvel Studios productions “The Marvels” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” are swapping release dates, Disney announced Friday. “The Marvels,” the sequel to 2019's “Captain Marvel,” was originally due to open in theaters on Feb. 17, 2023, and “Quantumania,” the third movie in the “Ant-Man” series, was set to open on July 28, 2023. Instead, “Quantumania” will now bow first in February, and “The Marvels” will debut in July. Insiders say this was a matter of “Quantumania” simply being further along in its creative process than “The Marvels,” as the former has wrapped principal photography while “The Marvels” still has a bit more to go. Marvel Studios' other big theatrical release in 2023, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” is still set to debut on May 5, 2023. DISNEY+ ‘Moon Knight' Director Mohamed Diab on the Season Finale, Oscar Isaac's Return and the MCU's First Egyptian Superhero https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/moon-knight-season-finale-jake-lockley-scarlet-scarab-mohamed-diab-1235258810/ There are only a couple very glancing references to the MCU on “Moon Knight,” but there are no crossovers at all — up to the post-credits scene, where crossovers almost always happen. How do you feel about what that means about the show's place in the MCU? We had the freedom to place it whenever. I want to tell you the very first scene, there was a crossover, and the very end scene, there was a crossover. But as the story developed and we kept changing the scripts, we felt like, “We don't need that.” All of us. It was a collective decision. And then I kept thinking: It's a rule. There has to be a scene at the end that connects us to the MCU. But I think they decided, “You know what, the surprise is that there isn't, and what's going to make this show unique is it doesn't need anything else.” The best compliment we get on the show is when people tell us, “This doesn't feel like a Marvel show. It feels like a standalone show that feels more dramatic, more dark, grounded.” I feel like we succeeded in bringing Marvel more to our corner. So, so proud and happy. Disney+ X-Men Producer on the Pressure of Bringing Back the Mutants (Exclusive) https://thedirect.com/article/x-men-disney-mutants-exclusive In an exclusive interview, The Direct's Russ Milheim got to sit down with Moon Knight writer Beau DeMayo, also the head writer and executive producer of the upcoming X-Men '97 animated Marvel Studios series on Disney+, to discuss the differences of working on both projects and the general pressure of reviving the Mutants with Marvel Studios. The writer noted that the process is "no different" from "a studio and process standpoint," but that the "X-Men, in particular, is something that is very close to Marvel Studios' hearts:" “From a studio and process standpoint, no different. Kevin [Feige], Brad Winderbaum, Dana [Vasquez-Eberhardt] who's working with us on this, who are our producers, they have the same level of involvement. I know in some studios, animation is treated like the red-headed stepchild and, honestly, What If…? and Marvel's other animated series are treated just as seriously as their live-action properties. And X-Men, in particular, is something that is very close to Marvel Studios' hearts, now that it's back home at the studio. So that has been different. DeMayo noted that he feels a "weight and a responsibility" given that this is Marvel Studios' first go at an X-Men-focused project: "It's just like, X-Men means something to a lot of people. There's a weight and a responsibility there, I think, now that it's back at Marvel Studios, that is very different, and that I'm always aware of. The funny difference is more sleepless night, because on Moon Knight, if something didn't go right, [I was like], ‘well, Jeremy [Slater] is is writing the show, so at the end of the day he'll have to [figure it out].' There have been several moments where I'm like, ‘Someone needs to figure this out—oh, it's me now.' [laughs] So, there's been a lot of growth, I'd say, that I've had to do on X-Men ‘97. Just as a storyteller, and as a producer, and as a person, that has made it a very different experience than writing on Moon Knight." During Disney's presentation at CinemaCon 2022, the first looks at Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness -- which has already nabbed $42 million in advance ticket sales -- and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever were shown. Feige also spoke about some exciting projects in the works, including a mysterious 3D movie. He then revealed that he'd just returned from an in-person retreat with the other heads of Marvel Studios, where the team mapped out what's coming to the big screen in the next decade. "In the next 10 years, with existing characters and new characters and new storytelling tools with the multiverse, anything can happen," Feige said. Feige also revealed that the retreat featured a giant board "that takes us through the next decade [of films] and they are unique and special and they are meant for your theaters." The overall tone of the presentation was one in celebration of the rebound of movie theaters after the blow the industry took during the first year and a half of the COVID-19 pandemic. He cited the theatrical success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought in $1.89 billion globally and netted a reported $610 million in profits. While Marvel Studios is also building out its television offerings on Disney+, Feige promised its biggest stories would still be hitting theaters, meaning Black Widow's day-and-date streaming release will remain a fluke. Of course, Feige didn't reveal just what Marvel Studios has in store over the next decade, but fans eager to learn more about Phase 4 and beyond have plenty to go on. Beyond the confirmed big and small screen titles, like Thor: Love and Thunder, She-Hulk, The Marvels, Blade, and Fantastic Four, the MCU will reportedly see a Nova/Richard Rider film in the future, with Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada attached to tackle the script. This may or may not be separate from a reported cosmic Marvel film that recently popped up on a production listing. More concrete but without any firm release date or details is the arrival of the X-Men in the MCU. Feige has made no secret that mutants are coming now that Disney owns the film rights to the Marvel characters once controlled by Fox, but there's been no hint as to when they might pop up on the big screen. That said, it seems certain that Patrick Stewart's Professor X is in Multiverse of Madness, so the answer to that and many more questions about the MCU's future may be right around the corner. In addition the Culver City, CA studio revealed the title of the pic's sequel (technically the third installment in the animated Marvel series): Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Exclusive: Blade Production Company and Working Title Revealed https://www.thecosmiccircus.com/exclusive-blade-production-company-and-working-title-revealed/ The Cosmic Circus can now exclusively report that Blade's production company is Standoffish Productions LLC. We can also confirm that one of the working titles the project is using is “Perfect Imprints.” According to our information, the movie is currently scheduled to begin to film this July in the Atlanta area. Standoffish Productions is part of a batch of companies that Marvel registered in 2020 and 2021. Arlyn Murphy of Murphy's Multiverse reported on this and other companies she had discovered back in November 2020, and later confirmed to be Marvel properties. Until now, all we could do was speculate what project any of these LLCs was for. https://www.murphysmultiverse.com/young-avengers-production-marvel-studios/ https://www.newsweek.com/doctor-strange-star-zara-phythian-sex-abuse-allegations-detailed-court-1701699 DISNEY+ MCU Star Confirms Hawkeye's Echo Spinoff Is Now Filming https://www.cbr.com/echo-alaqua-cox-announces-filming/ Hawkeye star Alaqua Cox confirmed that principal photography has commenced on the spinoff series Echo. Cox, who plays the show's protagonist Maya Lopez, posted a picture on Instagram of flowers she received from Reservation Dogs actor Devery Jacobs, who wished her the best for the first day of filming on 21 April. Aside from providing a concrete start date for shooting on Echo, the post (in particular, a card attached to the bouquet) has also fueled speculation that Jacobs is part of the Disney+ series' cast. Jacobs' involvement with Echo is purely speculation at this stage. While this recent update confirms that the production is starting to gain momentum, Marvel Studios and Disney+ have remained largely tight-lipped about Echo. Little is known about the plot of the series, although Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously divulged that Echo will pick up immediately after Hawkeye. "[T]he Echo series will be -- we see Maya Lopez go from the end of this series into that series will be the next direct link," Feige explained. Filming permit applications filed by Echo's location manager Ryan Schaetzle also confirmed that the show won't share Hawkeye's New York City setting. These applications were made to two small towns in Georgia, Grantville and Social Circle, and were ultimately successful. Echo will film in Social Circle in April and Grantville in May, with the scenes involved said to be devoid of "explosions, gunfire, or big stunts." Arguably the biggest news surrounding Echo is a recent leak that allegedly spoils the inclusion of two major MCU characters in the series. The resume for the show's costume designer Stacy Caballero appears to have unwittingly revealed that both Daredevil and Kingpin will return in Echo, even though actors Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio are not officially attached to the production. Cox last appeared as Daredevil's alter-ego Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home, while D'Onofrio reprised the role of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in several episodes of Hawkeye. The pair originated these roles in the Daredevil series that originally aired on Netflix and now streams on Disney+ alongside the other entries in the so-called "Defenders Saga." One of the writers on Echo, Dara Resnik, penned two episodes of Daredevil Season 3, further stoking speculation that the Man Without Fear and his arch-enemy will appear in the upcoming series. Multiverse Maestro Michael Waldron On ‘Loki' & ‘Doctor Strange 2' [Interview] https://theplaylist.net/multiverse-maestro-michael-waldron-on-loki-doctor-strange-2-interview-20220421/ Is the goal another six-episode sort of arc, or could it potentially be longer for season two? Disney+ Releases New Daredevil Featurette With Charlie Cox https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-charlie-cox-daredevil-featurette-marvel/ Disney+ is making it known that Charlie Cox's Daredevil is home with the rest of Marvel's star-studded lineup. A new featurette was released online to re-introduce the former Netflix series, which now streams along with the rest of the Defenders shows on Disney+. In the featurette, which is mostly action clips from the series, actor Charlie Cox talks about who Matt Murdock is as a character and what the show means to him. The history of video games movies has been to say the least tumultuous. The highs and lows differing depending on the die hard or casual video game player you ask. The movie of this month was the second of its kind living up to the bombastically over the top of early 90s action films. Coming out a year before it's source material competitor's foray into live action, this movie might be cheesy, might have a Belgian playing and American, and have Gomez Addams play a dictator that just wants to share money with his face on it with the world but dang if this movie is not fun. Following the release of the first trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, which shows Foster wielding Mjolnir and in her costume, Marvel put out a plot synopsis for the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The plot synopsis officially calls Foster "Mighty Thor." Additionally, the press release for a Marvel Legends figure of Foster's God of Thunder refers to her as "mighty Thor." Both also confirm she indeed wields Mjolnir. You can see images of the Marvel Legends Mighty Thor figure, which ties into the upcoming movie, below. The six-inch figure features four accessories and a Build-a-Figure part. Thor 4 Trailer Features One of the Most Comic Book-Accurate Scenes the MCU's Ever Shot https://www.cbr.com/thor-4-trailer-comics-accurate-mcu-scene-marvel/ Marvel Studios released the first teaser trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, which featured one of the most comics-accurate shots to date in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shown briefly in the teaser trailer, the shot depicts Chris Hemsworth's Thor and Taika Waititi's Korg standing atop a rock overlooking the corpse of a god who, in the comics, was identified as Falligar the Behemoth and died at the hands of Gorr the God Butcher. While Thor is alone in the comics, the shot from the trailer is an almost exact recreation of a panel that appeared in Thor: God of Thunder Vol. 1 #3 as the third part of the God Butcher arc. Released in December 2012, the issue was written by Jason Aaron, drawn by Esad Ribić and colored by Ive Svorcina. Marvel Sleuths Believe a Character Was Digitally Scrubbed From the Thor 4 Trailer https://www.cbr.com/thor-love-and-thunder-fans-character-scrubbed-trailer/ Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe suspect that a key character has been edited out of the Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer. The shot in question appears at the 37-second mark of the video, shortly after the section where the Guardians of the Galaxy are seen leaving Thor and Korg behind on a debris-ridden platform. Many fans have pointed to the framing of the scene, which appears to be too wide to show just two characters. Some are suggesting that the extra length of the frame and the empty space next to Thor is evidence that Marvel Studios has digitally removed a character from the trailer. Nebula's Backstory Would Make Cool Disney+ Show, Says Karen Gillan https://screenrant.com/nebula-marvel-disney-plus-show-backstory-karen-gillan/ Karen Gillan thinks Nebula's backstory would make for a cool Disney+ show after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Marvel Studios received a new path to expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Phase 4 with the launch of Disney's streaming service in 2019. Disney+ has so far been used to elevate supporting characters like Scarlet Witch or Falcon and introduce major new heroes, such as Moon Knight. There are many upcoming MCU Disney+ shows that meet these criteria and explore different corners of the massive franchise. ‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse' Heads To Summer 2023; Sony Dates ‘Madame Web', ‘Equalizer 3' Among Other Release Changes https://deadline.com/2022/04/spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-summer-2023-theatrical-release-sony-release-date-changes-1235007010/ Sony's animated sequel to the Oscar winning movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is moving from Oct. 7 this year to June 2, 2023. After being asked by a fan on Twitter when Moon Knight takes place in the MCU timeline, Slater admitted the lack of a firm premiere date during production forced the creative team to keep the show's place in the timeline unclear. "A lot of people have asked [about when Moon Knight takes place in the MCU], but I have no idea, sorry," Slater wrote. "We didn't know when our show would debut in relation to their other shows and films, so the timeline was intentionally left vague." Tom Hiddleston and ‘Loki' Will Avoid Emmys Mischief by Submitting in These Categories (EXCLUSIVE) https://variety.com/2022/awards/news/tom-hiddleston-loki-emmys-submissions-1235231497/ Hawkeye and Moon Knight are competing as “Limited Series” According to the Television Academy rules and regulations, the criteria to compete in limited series: “The program must tell a complete, non-recurring story, and not have an ongoing storyline or main characters in subsequent seasons.” Aside from “Hawkeye” and “Moon Knight” competing in limited series, Marvel also has the anthology series “What If…?” that was created by A.C. Bradley. However, it will compete for outstanding animated program. Disney+ Working To Restore Access After Episodes Of Original Series Including ‘Agent Carter' Went Missing https://deadline.com/2022/04/disney-plus-restore-access-episodes-original-series-missing-1235005673/ UPDATED: Disney+ subscribers binging series from the streamer's library on Monday discovered that a number of episodes were not available. Affected titles are said to include Duck Tales, Agent Carter, X-Men, Lizzie McGuire, Owl House and Rocket & Groot. Fans took to reddit and other online platforms to share their frustration and also reached out to Disney. Disney+'s response, as relayed by customers online and verified by sources to Deadline, is that the purge of episodes was accidental, due to a technical issue. The company has been working to resolve the glitch and access to the missing episodes is expected to be restored within the hour, I hear. UPDATE 11 AM: I now hear that the fix is taking longer and the MIA episodes may not be fully restored before end of day today. We will update the story when all impacted episodes are back on the service. “We are actively working to resolve the issue impacting access to a subset of series episodes for some Disney+ subscribers,” the company said in a statement to Deadline. “We are sorry for the experience and appreciate everyone's patience.” Netflix rocked by subscriber loss, may offer cheaper ad-supported plans https://www.reuters.com/technology/netflix-subscribers-fall-first-time-decade-forecasts-more-losses-2022-04-19/ INHUMANS Inhumans Star Iwan Rheon Wants to Return to Marvel https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/inhumans-tv-series-return-iwan-rheon-maximus-marvel-cinematic-universe/ At one point in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was limitless potential for the Inhumans, though what was originally conceived to be a movie was reimagined as Marvel's Inhumans TV series, which was met with disappointment from both audiences and critics alike. Even with the underwhelming response to the project, Maximus actor Iwan Rheon would love to continue his journey with the character, though he'd also be happy to take on another role if it meant a return to the MCU in any capacity. Rheon can currently be seen in Barbarians, which is in theaters and On Demand now. "I'll take anything really. I'd love to have another crack at -- I'd love to do Maximus again," Rheon shared with ComicBook.com when discussing how he'd like to return to the MCU. "I think he's a really interesting character. And also I feel a bit sorry for him, because he is just stuck on the Moon still, but yeah, I'd love to do any of that stuff. Anything. I'm not fussy, give me anything." Cathey Tributes Following Backlash https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-punisher-luke-cage-stan-lee-tribute-restored-marvel/ Disney+ has restored tributes to the late Stan Lee and Reg E. Cathey in The Punisher and Luke Cage, respectively. Earlier in April 2022, it was discovered that the streaming service had removed the two tributes from their respective appearances in the second season finales of The Punisher and Luke Cage. When fans caught wind of the decision, they were displeased, to say the least. Following the backlash, the two memorial tributes once again adjoin these two series in "The Defenders Saga." Whether these series will see any sort of revival remains to be seen. For a moment, it seemed that Daredevil was officially canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe being that Matthew Murdock's live-action biography on Marvel's website was updated to include both the events of the series and the character's appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, Marvel has since removed the mention of No Way Home from Murdock's television timeline. While Daredevil star Charlie Cox is rumored and reported to reprise his role in numerous upcoming MCU projects, there is no word on whether actors Mike Colter and/or Jon Bernthal will return as Luke Cage and Frank Castle, respectively. Bernthal did react to The Punisher landing on Disney+, but there has been no word from the actor on whether he has been asked to return any time soon. As for Colter, the actor revealed back in late 2020 that he had not been approached about returning, but that he'd "love to." ‘Moon Knight' Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead on Joining the MCU, Helming Episodes 2 & 4, and ‘Loki' Season 2 https://collider.com/moon-knight-directors-justin-benson-aaron-moorhead-interview-loki-season-2-disney-plus/ Marvel's ‘Ironheart' Finds Its Directors While Ryan Coogler Boards as Executive Producer https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/marvel-ironheart-show-directors-ryan-coogler-1235128280/ Ryan Coogler and his production banner, Proximity Media, have joined the creative team of Ironheart, Marvel's Disney+ series featuring the titular Iron Man-adjacent character. At the same time, the show has firmed up its filmmaking talent, hiring Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes as directors. Dominique Thorne is toplining Ironheart, playing Riri Williams, a brilliant teenage inventor who, in the comics, builds her own version of the Iron Man suit in an MIT dorm. Disney+ Removes The Defenders' Post-Credits Punisher Teaser https://www.cbr.com/disney-plus-removes-defenders-punisher-teaser-marvel/ The Defenders on Disney+ seems to be missing its post-credits teaser for The Punisher. When the show originally aired on Netflix, The Defenders featured a teaser trailer for The Punisher as its post-credits scene. The trailer saw Frank Castle/Punisher (Jon Bernthal) using a sledgehammer to smash his logo into concrete while revealing footage from the show. As Twitter user Ian Cardona notes, that teaser for The Punisher no longer appears at the end of The Defenders. CBR has verified that this change was made in both the Canadian and American markets. She-Hulk Reportedly Bumped Back on Marvel's Disney+ Schedule https://www.cbr.com/she-hulk-reportedly-bumped-back-marvel-schedule-mcu/ A leaker on Reddit with a proven track record in regards to WandaVision suggested She-Hulk could arrive in very late 2022 or even early 2023 as various VFX houses hustle to complete post-production. This information lines up with a report from March about She-Hulk facing some behind-the-scenes difficulties. Dr. Gnome to you @MrParacletes Second, and this may be a serious reach, is Steven's use of "Laters gators," perhaps a reference to the Egyptian God Sebek who has a crocodile head but he thinks it's a gator or doesn't know the difference? Matt Murdock's character page on the Marvel site includes a detailed "On Screen Full Report" of the events experienced by Charlie Cox's hero. Not only does the report detail all three seasons of his Netflix adventures, but it also mentions that "Sometime later, Matt was hired as an attorney to defend Peter Parker." Here's the excerpt of the important part: Soon after, Matt attended the funeral for Father Lantom, where he made peace with Sister Maggie. Now in a better state of mind than he had been in quite a while, Matt fully reconciled with Karen and Foggy and the three of them discussed the idea of reforming their law firm with Karen now as the firm's lead investigator and third partner. Sometime later, Matt was hired as an attorney to defend Peter Parker, as Peter had been publicly outed as Spider-Man and accused of Mysterio's murder. Though Peter was legally cleared of any wrongdoing, Matt warned him he'd still have to face the court of public opinion and advised Harold “Happy” Hogan to hire a good lawyer. As if on cue, a protestor threw a brick through the window of the Parkers' apartment in support of Mysterio. Fortunately, due to his heightened senses, Matt was able to catch the brick before it hurt anyone inside. When Peter asked him how he was able to do that, Matt claimed it was because he was a really good lawyer and left it at that. Marvel's confirmation that Murdock became Peter Parker's lawyer "Sometime later" than the dramatic ending of Daredevil Season 3 appears to indicate Charlie Cox will continue playing the same version of his character, not a Multiversal Variant as many had speculated. DISNEY+ Disney+ Removes Stan Lee Tribute From Marvel Netflix Show https://thedirect.com/article/marvel-stan-lee-tribute-disney-netflix-show A tribute to Stan Lee has been removed from The Punisher's second season finale, which was released in January 2019. The "In Loving Memory of Stan Lee" tribute is now replaced with a prolonged black screen before the credits. The reasoning behind the removal is unknown, but a prevailing theory is that the scene preceding the tribute has Frank Castle gunning down a group of people. Of course, this isn't the confirmed cause of the change—after all, that's how it was when the tribute first aired with the show back in 2019. Oddly enough, the Stan Lee tribute found at the end of Jessica Jones season 3 is still present on Disney+. ‘Star Wars' vs. Marvel: Which Disney+ Shows Are Most-Viewed https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/star-wars-vs-marvel-which-disney-shows-are-most-viewed-1235122942/ Marvel Leak Spoils Daredevil and Kingpin's Next MCU Appearance https://www.cbr.com/marvel-daredevil-kingpin-mcu-appearance-spoiled-echo/ A new leak seems to spoil the next Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance for Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin and Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil. The outlet notes that it isn't known at this point if the project is being developed as a Marvel Studios film or a TV series, but just earlier this month, reports emerged that Marvel was moving forward on a new space-themed project, with it being possible that a Nova TV series is that secretive project. Moon Knight is slated to debut on Disney+ on March 30th. DISNEY+ Loki's New Bosses Offer First Information on Season 2 https://www.cbr.com/loki-season-2-directors-first-information/ While Kate Herron directed Season 1 of the show, with Michael Waldron serving as the head writer, she won't be returning for the next round of episodes. Instead, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead will helm a number of episodes for Season 2 after tackling several for Moon Knight. And as it turns out, the directing duo finds their similar status in the MCU appealing. "We know that the thing that appeals to us about Loki and Moon Knight specifically, it's just among the MCU, they feel like outsiders," Benson said. "And there's something about that that we really relate with." Because both characters are outsiders, their shows allow the creators behind the shows to push the boundaries of superhero storytelling. Early Moon Knight reviews have positively pointed to this unique nature, and Season 1 of Loki was widely praised for its idiosyncratic approach to the MCU. And according to Moorhead, the only reason Loki and Moon Knight were even able to get made is thanks to their atypical energy. "I think the biggest thing about Loki is just that it's actually a lot like Moon Knight, where there's just no reason to do it if it's not going to be something new and fresh," Moorhead said. "[What's] funny is, it does feel like Marvel would be willing to walk away unless it actually is something that they felt the unexpected. Like from Moon Knight, and especially because Moon Knight is a character where nobody knows almost anything about him yet. Soon to be changed, right? And so our gloves are off and we get to kind of do whatever we want. And everybody at Marvel and ourselves gets really excited when we are presented with the unexpected. We also, of course, hope that people watching feel the same way and we're gonna bring all that to Loki." Disney+ is restoring Falcon and the Winter Soldier after alternate cut was uploaded to platform https://ew.com/tv/disney-plus-restoring-falcon-and-the-winter-soldier-alternate-cut Sharp-eyed Marvel fans watching The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ this week noticed something a bit off: Some of the more violent scenes in the superhero series appeared to be edited to tone down the content. While some assumed this meant Disney+ was censoring violent content on the streaming platform, perhaps due to the new parental control options made available to subscribers, EW has learned that an alternate version of the show had been uploaded by mistake. Disney is currently working to fix the issue. The Direct was one of the first on social media to point out the discrepancy. Two scenes in the show's third episode were among those cited by commenters online. https://thedirect.com/article/disney-falcon-winter-soldier-censored-photos OUTRO [1:07:05] We would love to hear back from you!
