This week, we discuss two films that feature characters being terorrised by vehicles. The first is Christine (1983), a supernatural horror film co-scored and directed by John Carpenter and starring Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul, Robert Prosky and Harry Dean Stanton. Adapted from Stephen King's 1983 novel of the same name, the movie follows the changes in the lives of Arnie Cunningham, his friends, his family, and his teenage enemies after he buys a classic red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine, a car that seems to have a mind of its own and a jealous, possessive personality, which has a bad influence on Arnie. The second is Duel (1971), an action-thriller directed by Steven Spielberg. It centres on a travelling salesman David Mann (Dennis Weaver) driving his car through rural California to meet a client. However, he finds himself chased and terrorised by the mostly unseen driver of a semi-truck. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with Spielberg's direction being singled out for praise. It has since been recognised as an influential cult classic and one of the greatest films ever made for television.   Timestamps What we've been watching (00:01:03) –  Gladiator, Gladiator 2, The Penguin, Predator, Notting Hill Christine (00:31:50) Duel (00:58:00) Coin toss (01:11:12)   Links Instagram - @callitfriendopodcast @munnywales @andyjayritchie   Letterboxd – @andycifpod @fat-tits mcmahon   Justwatch.com – streaming and rental links - https://www.justwatch.com Going Rogue podcast - Gladiator 2 - https://open.spotify.com/episode/2iosKfiFHpYObG0k1LH4hy

So what does he do? Why, he disguises himself as an elderly British woman and finagles his way into becoming their nanny. Yep, nothing major. Transphobic gags being juggled alongside some surprisingly positive facets of queer rep, questioning whether or not the movie truly understands how allergies work, and its progressive perspective on divorce are a few of the talking points that come up on this episode. Directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone), Mrs. Doubtfire stars Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Lisa Jakub, Matthew Lawrence, Mara Wilson, Robert Prosky, Anne Haney, Harvey Fierstein, Scott Capurro, Martin Mull, and Polly Holliday. THIEF (1981) and DRIVE (2011) feel like they share DNA (along with THE DRIVER (1978), which gets more than an honorable mention from us). With plots that seem deceptively simple on the surface, these films feature characters with a ton of rage brewing beneath what's visible up top. James Caan and Ryan Gosling are at their peak here, as are the rest of the brilliant ensemble casts, which features the likes of Robert Prosky, Tuesday Weld, Willie Nelson, James Belushi, Albert Brooks, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman, Christina Hendricks, and Oscar Isaac! This week, we're paying tribute to James Caan, who passed away last month at age 82, with his starring role in Michael Mann's 1981 directorial debut. Co-starring Tuesday Weld, Willie Nelson and Robert Prosky, the film also features the big screen debuts of Dennis Farina, William Petersen and James Belushi. Mann brought in real-life professional thieves to consult on the film, which was co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and features a synth-heavy soundtrack by German electronica group Tangerine Dream. Playing a jewel thief and safecracker, James Caan often said that, next to The Godfather, this was the movie of which he was proudest. Now we're tracking down the fifth alarm and stealing a peek at Thief to kick off Aug-Heist 2022!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. RIP to James Caan, one of the more legendary American actors to emerge from the stellar crop of the 1970's. ☹ He has delivered many a strong performance in many strong movies including The Godfather where he played Sonny Corleone.   Over his impressive 50+ year acting career, his starring role as the eponymous thief in this crime drama is considered by many (himself included) to be his best overall performance.  He plays Frank, a seasoned safe-cracker living in Chicago looking for that one “last big score” and he just have found it…..working with local crime boss Leo (the late great Robert Prosky) which might present more issues than just pulling off a difficult caper.  All the while, Franks is also trying to build a relationship (and family) with Jesse (Tuesday Weld) while also trying to help his mentor Okla (Willie Nelson) who's still in prison – needless to say, Frank has a LOT going on and various complications ensue.  This was also the feature film directorial debut of Michael Mann who would eventually go on to direct several CLASSIC dramas including The Last of the Mohicans, Collateral, and…..one of my personal favorites, Heat. Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

It's the hilarious, smash hit family comedy... about a bitter divorce! The late, great Robin Williams was at the top of his game in 1993, and "Mrs. Doubtfire" let the comic actor run amok even when not dressing up like an old lady. Seriously, his character here, Daniel Hillard, is pretty unhinged, and it kinda makes sense that he loses custody of his kids. He's lucky he's not in jail for poisoning Pierce Brosnan! (To be fair, who the hell do you think you are ordering a jambalaya without pepper?! It's a Cajun dish, Pierce, what the hell is the point?) Old Millennials hosts Tyler and Angela both watched "Mrs. Doubtfire" a bunch as kids, as they both came from Robin Williams-loving homes. So were they nervous about revisiting the film and finding a whole bunch of outdated and insensitive jokes? You bet! Luckily, the movie largely avoids any questions about gender and sexuality (with the exception of that creepy bus driver who keeps hitting on Mrs. Doubtfire), and keeps things simple: Daniel is lying to his kids and pretending to be an old woman because he loves being around them so much! Nothing wrong with that, right? Right?! Right?!!?!!? Let's make one thing clear: This movie is still pretty watchable, thanks to some genuinely terrific comedic riffing by Williams, as well as the surprisingly sensitive and believable depiction of divorce (thanks mostly to an excellent Sally Field performance). Heck even these three kids are likeable  - Lisa Jakub, Matthew "Not the 'Whoa' Lawrence" Lawrence and adorable Mara Wilson in her screen debut. Even new beau Pierce Brosnan is a nice guy! We kinda bad he's a victim of a run-by fruiting! So get your frosting facial ingredients together,  sing a song from "Funny Girl," and don't double-book yourself and you alter ego at the same time at the same place, dummy. Also try to figure out why local TV producer Robert Prosky decides to replace his soft-spoken kids show host with... another soft spoken kids show host!? Is Euphegenia Doubtfire really more interesting than that dinosaur guy?! Wait, Mrs. Doubtfire's first name is EUPHEGENIA?! The film stars Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, and Robert Prosky, about a recently divorced actor, Daniel Hilliard (Robin Williams), who dresses up as a female housekeeper "Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire" to be able to interact with his children. The story is about a failing voice actor named Daniel Hilliard who had lost his job and throws a birthday party for his son behind his wife Miranda's back. Wanting to see them more often, he asks his brother, a makeup artist, to help disguise him as a old British house nanny named Mrs. Doubtfire. When the movie premiered, it became a massive success making over $441 million dollars out of a $25 million dollar budget receiving decent reviews from critics. Roger Ebert claimed that it was similar to Tootsie, but nowhere near as clever or as realistic. It currently has a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes despite a lot of people loving it. German soldiers have been stationed at the Keep, but an ancient evil has awoken killing more of them each night. The Nazis are forced to turn to a Jewish professor to help them solve the mysteries of the Keep before more soldiers fall to this unknown force. Just before Miami Vice Michael Mann wrote & directed the World War II horror film The Keep (1983) based on the novel by F. Paul Wilson. The Keep had an impressive cast with Scott Glenn, Alberta Watson, Jürgen Prochnow, Robert Prosky, Gabriel Byrne, and Ian McKellen. Despite an all-star cast and Michael Mann at the helm the film would fail due to a series of unfortunate events that would change Mann's original vision for the film. With such a strong premise Invasion of the Remake deems The Keep worthy of our patented re-imagining. Garrett tries to apply some queer theory to Caan's character, Frank and Dan helps him extrapolate that to Mann's vision of masculinity at large by digging into Frank's picture of society, both literal and metaphorical. The boys praise Tangerine Dream's score, Donald E. Thorin's cinematography, and lovable character actor Robert Prosky's turn as formidable gangster, Leo. There's something about your first love, and there's something about your first car. Stephen King found an interesting way to tap into that with his novel "Christine," and John Carpenter found an interesting way to develop it even further in his 1983 adaptation. Sure, the car may be possessed, but Arnie sure falls for his car... and she for him. It's an interesting take, and one we delve into this week. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our Stephen King series with Carpenter's "Christine." We talk about our first experiences with this film and how that compared with our recent viewings of it and whether the film held up or not. We discuss the performances — Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul, Robert Prosky, Harry Dean Stanton and more — and how well they worked... or didn't. We chat about the car — the beautiful iterations of the Plymouth Fury that they blend together to create this possessed automobile -- and how she's one of the strongest pieces of the film, particularly the magical scene where Christine rebuilds herself. We touch on script problems, particularly the struggle we have with Christine's reasoning for her kills. And we talk about what John Carpenter brings to the table, and if it holds up with some of his other films made at this time. Andy ends up liking this film more than Pete, but we both have a great time talking it up. Check it out! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! And we really dig into the character arc of Frank played by Caan, discussing how it works in context of the script, and why the actual ending of the screenplay changes his story in a way that works for us even if it doesn't feel very much like a 'Michael Mann' ending. It's a great film that we're happy to revisit. Tune in!* * *Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! If you like what we're doing here on TNR, it really is the best way to make sure that this show appears when others search for it, plus, it's just a nice thing to do. The Next Reel by The Next Reel Film Podcasts

Michael Mann has spent most of his film career exploring the world of crime and the criminals that inhabit it. Not to mention neon lighting. His feature film debut, Thief, certainly started him on the right track. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our 1981 series with Mann's Thief. We talk about why this film works well for us as well as what elements don't work, really digging into Mann and his proclivity to give short shrift to his female characters. We chat about the truth brought to the film by bringing on real thieves to work as technical advisors, training James Caan to work with real equipment and actually really cracking safes on screen. In this week's episode, the gang gets ready to break up some nostalgia with the insanely terrifying, family in peril thriller, Mrs. Doubtfire! Why does this movie need to tack on the anti-smoking message? How does Robin Williams not see that divorce a mile away? And why does he make Harvey Fierstein design all those other disguises if he knows he's going as Mrs. Doubtfire? Plus: We open Alcatraz back up for one very special execution. Mrs. Doubtfire stars Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, and Robert Prosky; directed by Chris Columbus.
