Ep. 168: You Can Only Lose When You Give Up

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2019 9:21

Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday was inspired by an unfortunate circumstance with one of my rescue dogs, Mollie. Mollie was suddenly taken away by the rescue organization where she was adopted because of claims related to her vegetarian diet. I was told that due to her diet, a veterinarian had diagnosed her with various health issues related to her kidneys and heart. Naturally, I asked for documentation to support these claims and when I was told they didn't have it, a battle was initiated between the rescue organization and myself. After meeting with various attorneys, my sense of helplessness and desperation increased. Grief and loss overwhelmed me because despite the abundance of evidence that demonstrated their dishonesty, a sense of direction and victory was nowhere in-sight. Despite the circumstances, I refused to give up the search for our beloved Mollie, regardless of the advice we were initially given. Not allowing hope to leave my side is what fueled my determination because the only reality I was willing to accept was Mollie returning to her home. As I reflect on other circumstances in my life where it appeared that I was defeated, I kept going anyway. What I've learned is that you can only lose when you give up. Falling flat on your face doesn't mean you've lost. But if you decide to stay face down, then you've lost the battle. Those that succeed and prevail are the ones that refuse to keep trying in the face of adversity. When you seek solutions instead of hanging onto an obstacle, you consciously choose to find a positive outcome. Therefore, it's no surprise that the people that have an end in-mind often find what they're looking for. Mollie reinforced the importance of tenacity and determination by showing me that the love I have for her is far greater than any road block we may encounter. Her temporary (and unexpected) departure proved to me that once again, the only person that can determine when it's time to give up is you. Noel Russell initially began her professional career in fashion. In this podcast episode, Noel shares what initially sparked her interest in social work and how she found a bridge between her past personal experiences and current passion toward social and community engagement. She believes that you don't have to be wealthy to help others and shares how her Mexican American family taught her the value of providing support to those around you. Whether it's through being present by recognizing that not asking for help doesn't negate the fact that one may need assistance, Noel gives us insight into the many ways we can spread love and kindness, regardless of where we are in the world. Currently, she is an advocate of children and youth in the Bay Area. Her purpose is to provide support and resources for those that are underserved and may not have the ability to seek the assistance they need. Noel wants the people she serves to know that although they may not have economic freedom, this doesn't imply they lack in other areas as well. Noel Russell is a firm believer that what you do for others today can empower an individual far beyond what we can see. Noel is a genuine Latina whose voice and testimony have a lasting impact. In this episode, she also shares her various perspectives about what it was like growing up in a large Mexican family and the legacy she carries with her today. This episode is a vulnerable, sensitive and engaging conversation and reminder of the power we all carry within. Ep. 161: Losses Have Lessons

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 12, 2018 8:42

Lately, I've been contemplating and analyzing recent events in my life more than usual because of some changes that have led to feelings of loss. As an entrepreneur, I've had complete autonomy of my schedule, which has allowed me to move at a higher-than-normal pace. Because I became accustomed to this lifestyle and not being required to "check-in" with anyone, including myself, being exposed to a new routine threw me off course. I suddenly lost hours in my day due to a relationship and other unforeseen circumstances. Although our personal relationships are an important aspect of life, it's equally as important to supply and sustain our own sense of security. We shouldn't depend on our partners for happiness or mental stability, which is why I believe it's important that we always strive to maintain awareness when things around us are changing. The greatest and most reliable supplier of joy is your own self. The sudden "loss" of time I have felt lately led to many realities that I would have otherwise been unaware of. In today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday, I talk openly about the lessons and discoveries that various losses have resulted in--not just time. Whether you lose a person, job or object, lessons are always around the corner waiting to be uncovered. I've learned that with people, we often wait much longer than we should to eliminate toxic relationships from our life because we're afraid of something. That "something" becomes the lessons when we shift our perspective from loss to gain. Other times, when a relationship ends, we are taught the value of gratitude and are humbled by the pain that makes us aware of why not to take things for granted. Sometimes loved ones are "lost" in order to appreciate and relish in future moments with loved ones that still remain. All losses have lessons, but we have to be willing to explore these emotions knowing that eventually, we'll grow from them. Today's podcast episode was recorded the morning after the 2018 Midterm Elections. I was inspired by all of the female candidates and the various adversities they were faced with throughout their campaign. I realized that our reality stems from our vision. Whether we think we can or we think we can't, we're right. Your vision is your reality, which is why it's so important that we define what we want our life to look like. It's also important that we believe in ourselves so our power is not dependent on others. As I reflected on the elections and what it must have been like to campaign, I kept landing on the fact that before they inspired voters, they all had to find inspiration within themselves. In order to push through and keep going, you have to believe in your vision wholeheartedly, which is sometimes challenging. The most powerful dialogues that take place are the ones that no one can hear. The conversations that happen in our minds either serve as reminders as to why we should continue to stand up, or serve as negative manifestations that keep us down. In today's episode, I share two personal experiences that required my vision to prevail in order to turn them into reality. To-date, I continue to remind myself why I launched this platform because it allows me to create, despite sometimes feeling like no one is listening. My reality is created as a result of my vision and not the other way around. I don't wait for life to show up in order to see a productive and fulfilling life in my future. Despite living through a time of political division and adversity, many women found the courage to stand in their vision and become a part of history. They inspired us in the process and I'm sure, will continue to remind us of our power as we set sights on a brighter future. Ep. 158: Confident Women Don't Hate On Other Women

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 31, 2018 8:09

Todays podcast episode is about the importance of women supporting women in all aspects of life. Often, I read negative comments on Instagram from women stating their opinion about another woman's physical appearance, which encouraged me to talk about this matter and share my personal experience regarding the occasional lack of support from women. The remarks are often unsolicited and nasty in nature, which leads me to ask "why?" What's the purpose of putting someone else down that is doing nothing to you and instead, living their best life? Over the years, as my relationships with women have evolved and transcended into various dynamics, I've become much more aware of the people I choose to share my time with. Primarily, this became important when I noticed that it was much harder to celebrate others than to be available during the challenging times. Today, I look for confidence as a key characteristic when choosing my friends because the more confident a woman is, the less likely they are to "hate" on other women. From wearing makeup to embracing your own sense of style, some women across all social media platforms share their thoughts (both negative and positive) if a another female is stepping into their own identity. In today's episode on WOWW Podcast, I discuss why I think this is and how we can learn from the moments when we find ourselves playing the comparison game. Often times, it can highlight if we're living in a scarcity mindset because somewhere, we believe there isn't enough for everyone, especially us. Other times, when we're hating on other women, it can serve as a reflection for the things we're secretly insecure about. In both circumstances, confidence is lacking. If we want the world around us to change and acknowledge our presence, we must encourage each other to do it among ourselves first. By uplifting and celebrating one another, we set the example for the rest of the world to see and follow. Ep. 157: Tips to Help Someone With Depression

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 17, 2018 10:50

I am not a mental health expert or medical professional and therefore, only speak from my personal experiences with depression and what has felt like a life-long battle with something I have little control over. As I've mentioned in previous podcast episodes, I lost a close family friend to suicide when I was 16 years old. I, personally, had a front row seat to his depression, which exponentially became worse in a short amount of time. Because I witnessed the stigma and consequences of remaining silent, I now speak up about these issues in an effort to help someone in need. Data shows (thank you, CDC) that suicide is the second leading cause of death for people between 10 and 35 years old. Between 2005 and 2016, suicide among this age group has increased by approximately 38%, which is higher than the rate at which the total US population has grown (9.4%). These rates are alarming because it tells a story about what is being uncovered in our society, but it often not discussed until it is too late. People with depression often suffer in silence and since the symptoms can be hidden from the public, treatment is not offered unless it's sough by the patient. When we hear of someone who is terminally diagnosed with cancer, it's common to find people around them that offer meals, time or words of encouragement. Often, a terminal illness can deteriorate a person to such a degree that if you have the ability to see, it's obvious something has gone terribly wrong. But with depression, the person may look different and therefore, everyone continues with their day while a dark illness hides behind the many masks one can wear throughout the day. I speak about this on the podcast because it's essential that we begin to address and acknowledge that mental illness is a serious matter that is currently becoming worse by the day. On average, about 123 people commit suicide per day. People need our help as well as the resources and information to seek the help of others as well, especially professionals. When my depression was at its darkest moments, I craved interactions with people the most. I simply needed to be reminded that I was loved. For me, this is where I began to develop an even greater spiritual practice. But for others, this could mean receiving a "just because" phone call on a consistent basis. We're living in a digital era that revolves around social media and communicating through Instagram stories or Facebook posts. But at the end of the day, we are all still human and still carry the same neurotransmitters we did 20 years ago. We are all still capable of feeling emotions such as loneliness, joy and sadness. Our gadgets may have changed, but we have not. Accepting that treatment for depression may be an ongoing procedure is also a great tip when it comes to helping someone with depression. If you know that a few words of encouragement may suffice that day, but may be needed again tomorrow, you're more likely to view mental illness with a different perspective. Be patient and consistent with people that suffer from depression because living with a cloud of darkness is not the kind of life anyone desires. If they knew how to take it away, believe me, they would. Many physical illnesses can be complicated and therefore, when someone is diagnosed, those around them become curious by asking questions regarding prognosis, treatment, symptoms, origin, etc. It is a support system that allows many people to attend difficult treatment procedures that impact their mobility and quality of life. Knowing that you're surrounded by people that genuinely care about your well-being is fuel and many times the differentiating factor in a recovery process--the same principle applies to depression. I remember feeling even more isolated and sad after friends and family found out I was severely clinically depressed. They expressed compassion for the first 24-48 hours, but quickly forgot about my illness. Because I did not have to report to a treatment facility or undergo surgery that would later cause vomiting, they did not understand. The few that became inquisitive about my emotions on a daily basis were the ones that felt like a ray of sunlight in the long-run. Become curious about the person that opens the door to have this conversation. Often times, it's a cry for help and consistent support and unsolicited love is the dose of medicine many need to seek the path that'll lead them towards recovery. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode is about following your heart because often, it has the power to steer us in the right direction. There have been times when I've done projects that only withdrew energy from me and because I was not following my heart, I thought this was "normal" and my unhappiness was part of the process. What I've learned as an entrepreneur is that our heart is an indicator of our joy. Although we may not always reap immediate results of our labor, our heart tells us when we're on the right path. Some people refer to this concept as "following your passion" but today, I want to remind you that your heart knows best, so listen to what it says. When we're in relationships that cause us consistent anxiety or sadness, our heart feels depleted of life, which often indicates that it's time to let go of the person we're trying to hang onto. When our heart feels revitalized and at-peace, we're in the right situation. With time, I have learned to rely on this internal compass, especially when it comes to making decisions that affect both my short and long-term well-being. Your heart knows best because it knows YOU. As two important dates approach, I began to reflect on the significance they have on my life. Almost three years ago, the most important person in my life suddenly passed away: my grandmother "Mamatita." She was a woman whose influence will forever live on. She taught me the importance of speaking up by showing those around her what courage looks like. She was never afraid, especially when the stakes meant sacrificing who she was. My grandmother taught me to do what was right and not what was popular. Whether it was politics, adultery, sex or parenting, if she had an opinion, she shared it. As midterm elections in the United States quickly approach, I wanted to encourage others to get involved by voicing their stance through their vote. We cannot complain about circumstances when we reject being part of the solution. Regardless of your political perspectives, we're all crafted in a unique manner and have different ways of looking at situations so that collectively, we all bring resourceful tools and suggestions to the table. Voting gives us the opportunity to participate in solutions so that our futures look brighter than our past. It has been said that the upcoming midterm elections will be one of the most important elections in history because it will determine where Americans currently stand. The people elected have great power on a state level over various policies such as: healthcare, education and economics. Their influence impacts our communities nearby. Upcoming elections impact the well-being of every citizen in the United States because they also serve as our voice in Congress. Today's Words of Wisdom podcast episode is about our perspective, attitude and disposition when things aren't going the way we envisioned. How do you show up for others when your personal circumstances are less than ideal? Do you treat bystanders with rudeness or disrespect when they have nothing to do with the challenges you're faced with? Not being aware of these traits and characteristics is dangerous because they're only amplified when circumstances begin to improve. When the stage gets bigger, so do the voices we've consistently expressed. We're taught to believe that the things that go on externally are solely responsible for our internal state. However, in today's episode, I discuss why this mentality can lead toward a destructive path due to minimal self-awareness that perpetuates negative behavior. Who we are when things aren't going well is the same person we'll be when our circumstances improve. Because of this lesson, I challenged myself and others to take a closer look at the positive (and negative) characteristics that we constantly possess. Who we truly are is revealed long before our life unfolds in the direction we prefer. When we're jealous of others, it often teaches us about our deepest desires, which can be turned into something positive. In order to see something in others, we have to be able to possess that ourselves. Therefore, if we're jealous of another person's relationship status and ability to attract love into their life, we are also identifying something we, ourselves, are capable of having as well. I discuss this topic because it's been something that has been frustrating and enlightening in my own life. Realizing the power that envy had in my life revealed some of my unresolved issues which in turn, resulted in positive and uplifting perspectives. However, I first had to acknowledge how frustrated I was when I'd confront anything that resembled jealousy-related emotions. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about creating space to recover or rebuild. It's also the first episode I've recorded after the volcano eruption took place in Antigua Guatemala on June 3, 2018. It wasn't until recently that I recognized the emotional toll this had on many people in the country that in some way or another were indirectly impacted by the catastrophic event. Shortly after this took place, the country went into fight-or-flight mode which greatly helped with relief efforts. When this happened, I was living 9 miles away which I believe increased my level of awareness about what these families were going through and how the rest of the surrounding villages would be affected. It was difficult not to cry after watching footage of the destruction. It was also difficult not to get involved when you're aware of the damages even if you avoid the media. Antigua Guatemala felt different after this day and even after the clean-up was managed, the scars were alive and well. Businesses, residents, government officials, and many others panicked as people were overcome with fear and concern for the victims and our community. When the dust began to settle, I was depleted of emotional energy and had no idea that's what happened until I created the space to identify what had unfolded. Creating space is not a bad thing and often necessary if we plan to regain strength, energy or momentum. In today's episode, you'll hear the ways in which I've done this in many different areas when things begin to feel "off." Whether it's between people or circumstances, without the space to reflect and piece together what's missing, we simply carry over those emotions into our future until it becomes too much to suppress and life forces us to evaluate our feelings. Today, I share how I've applied this logic at different times due to the consequences that have resulted from doing the complete opposite of creating space between myself and people, or me and my emotions. Todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about why WOWW Campaign was started in the first place. It's a message about inclusion with the intention of reminding people that we all have much more in common than we do differences. Everyone has issues, regardless of geographical location or socioeconomic status. Peoples problems are glorified in their minds, which means that we are likely to deal with a similar situation in a different way. Not voicing our concerns and insecurities 24/7 doesn't mean they don't exist. On the contrary, keeping in-mind that we all have issues will help us feel empathy even when external circumstances don't demand that we do. When we're communicating with other people, it's important to realize that their reaction to our problems may not always be ideal. More often than not, this has nothing to do with whether they're invested in us as people. Many times, their inability to engage with others has to do with their own circumstances. By reflecting on this message, I hope we take things less personal and show more compassion towards one another. Remember that everyone has issues...even if you don't know about them. Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2018 7:11

Todays message is about the importance of living with a mindset that's rooted in abundance rather than scarcity. Having an abundance mindset allows us to help other people without fear that something will be taken from us when we do. An abundance mindset also allows us to look at the world with a broader perspective by realizing there's enough for everyone. In this podcast episode, I share why this is important whether we're going through a breakup or starting a business. When we're heartbroken, it's hard to sometimes come to terms with the fact that life moves on, as do people. When our partners find themselves in another relationship, we're left wondering if we'll also find someone else to love. An abundance mindset leads with faith - faith that there's more than enough love for everyone, including you. As an entrepreneur, I talk about the need for community and support during the various stages of our journey. In fact, I'm of the belief that no one can do it alone and there's a reason why we're all living on this planet together. People need of one another and when we're called to help, it's important that we do so from a place of abundance rather than scarcity. When we fear that our ideas or clients will be taken away, it only limits ourselves. We limit ourselves with this thinking because it's based in fear and fear restricts us instead of causing our minds and hearts to open. Creativity and innovation can't blossom from a place of "lack." Instead, it flourishes when it comes from a place of wanting to help people and provide products, services and information of substance. Enjoy todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode. Todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about the importance of placing value on your life in order to increase the quality of your existence. I discuss how changing and acknowledging the importance of my perspective regarding the subject shifted many of my behaviors. When my depression was in its darkest state, I wanted to simply exist and wished the days would go by as quickly as possible. Previously, everyday habits were done subconsciously and indulgence was non-existent. My goal was to get through the day instead of enjoying the gift that each day brings. After I realized that each day was not guaranteed, I began to have a sense of urgency to live. I slowly started to place more value on the simple things like breathing and being able to taste foods, which ultimately lead to more gratitude. The sum of these behaviors and experiences resulted in more happiness and feelings of joy. Today, it's what I refer to as "living." Living your life means appreciating everything that's in front of you instead of lamenting the past or worrying about the future. Eventually, mornings became something I looked forward to instead of avoiding. I started to seize the day instead of allowing it to takeover my mind. I began to live outside of my mind by acknowledging the various aspects of nature that consistently felt like miracles. Everything turned brighter and while I still battled various episodes of depression, overall, I felt like a different person that was excited and grateful to be alive. Asking ourselves the question whether we're simply existing or living has the ability to lead us on a different path that's often trying to give us a more fulfilling life. Making mistakes does not mean we've failed. Often, uncomfortable and negative situations occur to teach us something. Whether we have to learn something about ourselves or other people, falling flat on our face is something we should celebrate more often because they're learning experiences. In todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode, I talk about the various falls I've had, both personally and professionally. Each fall has been infused with insight and have often served as reminders to stay on-course. When I've lost focus and fallen because of a decision I've made, I'm reminded through the hardships of where I was originally headed, which in turn has  made me reevaluate the change in direction. When I've fallen because of a heartbreak, I was forced to look at the characteristics that were originally holding me together, which were often faulty because at the sight of loss, I'd lose myself. When I fell because of a lost business opportunity, I'd realize the control fear had over my being. I would often stay down because of fear that I'd continue to lose. But through the hurdles and bruises, falling has taught me me that you only truly fail when you refuse to stand up again. When you avoid walking into the arena that once defeated you, you relinquish control to a future that hasn't yet occurred. Whether we're breaking up with someone, ending a friendship or a business relationship, fear of what others will say or how people will react can be a scary feeling. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode is about recent circumstances that made me evaluate not only my actions, but the importance behind the decisions we make and how tough it can be to make them. They're never easy, but they're not supposed to be because it's uncomfortable to walk into the unknown. But often, the unknown is not the dark place we envision or imagine in our minds. Tough decisions lead to revelations that serve to help us improve as people so that in the future, we can avoid these circumstances or at least react better if we find ourselves in a similar situation.

Today's podcast episode felt like a journal entry because of the series of events that crumbled (and then revived themselves) over the past week. Planning an event, coordinating projects, client meetings and everything else that comes with this role is hard work. I enjoy it thoroughly, but there are times when things are out of my control and I have no choice but to wait. When a client is due to respond, you can't force them to say what you want when you want. The entrepreneurial process is a big waiting game that forces you into a space of reevaluating whether you're a pessimist or an optimist. Recently, I was tested and realized that I'm more of an optimist than I thought. However, it wasn't always this way. In today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode, I discuss the lessons I've learned from choosing to push through in times when all I wanted to do was quit. Pushing through circumstances doesn't mean that you pretend the negative is non-existent. To me, pushing through means choosing to get back up despite wanting to stay down. It's the difference between movement and fear. When you fear that the same bad things may happen over and over, you become paralyzed. It becomes too scary to take the risk, which is why those that push through often prevail by a lot. Resilience teaches you what you're made of and how much you're able to carry. In today's podcast episode, I share how this has impacted my life and what I continue to learn from putting one foot in front of the other. Todays Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about the power and peace that awaits once we surrender a circumstance or situation to the universe after we've shown up with great effort, humility and tenacity. This message is not only about the importance of letting go, but also the importance of giving our best because once that's done, there's nothing left for us to do but surrender the outcome to the world. We are able to move forward and focus on the next opportunity because we're not living in regret when we give our best. Sometimes, this requires showing humility when we've made a mistake or changing our behavior once we've become aware of the negative impact previous habits had on others lives. But other times, doing everything we can is about having tough conversations and exposing thoughts or emotions that we know may be perceived as uncomfortable. Showing up is also required on a daily basis in our professional lives and as entrepreneurs. If we're not obtaining the results we want after showing up with grit, it may be time to pivot or make adjustments. However, if the results are indicative of a lack of initiative or work ethic, then we shouldn't let something go until we feel we've given our best. Living in regret holds us back because thinking "what if" prevents us from appreciating the now. Instead, we should put in the effort and hours, regardless of the situation so that in the end, we're able to release control of the outcome and therefore, be guided towards different and better opportunities. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday podcast episode is about the power behind revealing the things we suppress and are ashamed of. I share my personal experience with my lifelong battle with depression and how hiding this part of me actually made things worse. A lot of positive change happened as a result of being less afraid of what people would say and dismissing the possibility of shame. My life took a turn for the better the moment I decided to prioritize incorporating new habits and rituals that would hopefully address the depressed feelings I was experiencing. When you don't have to hide who you are, everything feels lighter. For me, this allowed for new energy to replace the energy I was using to keep my depression a secret from the world. Healing begins with revealing and if we're stuck on keeping something a secret, we can't begin to heal those parts of ourselves which in turn, allow us to live an authentic life. Depression was not the only thing that affected me, keeping it a secret prevented me from growing both mentally and emotionally as well. What are you afraid to talk about? What moments in your life are you afraid people will know about? What habits do you try to hide from the world? Are your thoughts something you're happy no one can see? If someone could hear your mind at-work, what would that sound like? These questions are the things that led to a plethora of self-discovery and ultimately, a much happier life. External sources encourage women to be someone other than who they really are, leaving us with feelings of unworthiness and inadequacy. During today's podcast episode, I share my personal experiences with this topic and how I tried to change parts of my personality in order to have a greater sense of approval from others. Ever since I can remember, I've been the type of person to take initiative in many different ways. This trait is often seen as "bossy" or masculine, so I suppressed this part of my personality as often as I could in an effort to be seen as a more feminine and "soft" woman. Social media has both positive and negative aspects because it has allowed us to connect with people, but at the same time has also made us disconnect from one another. We all struggle at some point in our life but social media creates the falsa illusion that some people are free of suffering and challenges, which couldn't be further from the truth. This episode is about emphasizing the fact that the highlight reel (i.e. Instagram) is not real. Comparison is the act that prevents us from staying on our path and focusing on where we're headed instead of where we haven't been. It's an unhealthy habit because we focus on what we're lacking instead of what we already have. Experiencing gratitude is one of the reasons we're able to attract other positive circumstances, which is why it's important to exercise this habit on a daily basis. Only when we remain focused on our personal accomplishments and journey can we experience gratitude. Today's Words of Wisdom Wednesday episode is about eliminating toxic habits that we've become accustomed to, such as comparison. It's never too late to begin so don't worry about where others are in their life. Everyones footprint and destiny is meant to vary. Regardless of whether or not businesses have outgrown us, it's our responsibility to focus on our personal target because no two paths will resemble one another.
