Learning to Say "No" Without Apologizing | Developing the Muscle to Decline & Honour Your Boundaries A lot of people struggle with the word no. Whether it's to say no, when they're not in the mood - or even more alarming, the individuals who take issue with hearing no. Much of culture & society has provided so many different vehicles to teach us the virtues of agreeability, being accommodating, and being willing to serve -- that we're now catering to a sense of entitlement, that can sometimes become ugly. As a first note - there is nothing offensive about saying the word no, or hearing it. Time, energy, and attention are highly valued resources - every person is juggling between priorities and obligations that make demands for all three. So in honour of where you want your energy to go - say no. And in honour of where you would much rather sit it out - say no Learn the benefit of being firm and direct when it comes to where you want your energy to go and flow. #mentahealth #sayingno #boundaries Any questions? Welcome to part two of this two part episode with Metic.Today's guest is Metic, a producer who fuses soulful guitar grooves with laid-back hip-hop beats. His playing is rooted in blues and finger-style guitar and his productions are informed by 90s boom-bap, G-funk, and trip-hop. A frequent collaborator, the Brooklyn-based, Hong Kong native continues to draw inspiration from both cities. This is showcased in his album release: Thoughts on Home and Symmetry, which documents his life and travels across his home and hometown. In Part Two of this two-part conversation, we discuss:- Quality versus quantity as it pertains to relationships.- Metic's experience releasing vinyl using crowdfunding through Qrates as well owning the process independently.- The three major categories of work as an artist and how to approach allocating your energy across each one.- Managing expectations in a way that allows you to maintain forward motion.- And, a reminder that you don't have to be good at everything in order to succeed.By the way…If you haven't already, I invite you to listen to Part 1 of this conversation for additional context as some topics re-emerge and develop.Top 3 Gems From This Convo:1. The Craft Is At The Core.Today's artist is expected to take on many responsibilities beyond the making of the art. However, it is important to find a way to be sure you are prioritizing what is at the heart of what you do: make art.2. Learning To Say No.This we know: It isn't possible to do everything. So, when an opportunity arises that is not aligned with your goals, outside of your capacity, or simply uninteresting, it's OK to say no.3. You Don't Have To Be The Best At Everything. As mentioned in Podium #5, “Success Occurs In The Privacy Of The Soul.”Assess your talents and abilities as objectively as possible. Do what you can with what you have. You're lack of knowledge or skill in one area does not necessarily prohibit success.Remember: A skill is not a static quality, but a learned and dynamic ability that changes based on the attention we invest.Listen on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.Tap in with toru:Substack: Instagram: @torubeattiktok: @torubeatTap in with Metic:Instagram: @meticmusicTo jump to a specific moment in the conversation:0:00 Intro 2:22 All Terms Are Negotiable 4:30 Quality v. In this episode of the Netmums Podcast, hosts Wendy Golledge and Alison Perry are joined by Georgia Kousoulou, known for her role on ITV's Georgia and Tommy: Baby Steps, and daily podcast Five Minutes Peace. In this thought-provoking episode of 'Shark Theory,' host Baylor Barbee engages listeners with a reflective and motivational discussion on the importance of setting personal boundaries and understanding one's limits. Barbee candidly shares his past experiences of overcommitment and the lessons learned from those challenges, providing valuable insights for anyone struggling with the pressure to be everywhere at once. The episode dives into the common fear of missing out (FOMO) that leads many to say yes to opportunities that may not align with their best interests. Baylor acknowledges that a fundamental fear of being forgotten can drive individuals to overextend themselves, ultimately causing burnout. He emphasizes the transformative power of the book "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" and its philosophy that not everything that is offered must be accepted. The discussion pivots towards the wisdom of prioritizing one's commitments and being honest with oneself and others about the capacity to help. Key Takeaways: Recognizing and admitting to one's limits prevents burnout and allows for better focus on meaningful commitments. Defining your 'kryptonite'—that which can undermine your strength—is crucial for personal development. Saying no to certain opportunities can open doors to more aligned and fulfilling experiences. Aligning actions with true motives is essential for living a purposeful and authentic life. It's important to differentiate between loving and caring for someone, and taking on all their priorities. Notable Quotes: "If you're doing too much for too many people for the sake of feeling like you're supposed to, inevitably you're going to burn out." "If it's not an absolute yes in your life, then it has to be a definitive no." "Sometimes the fakest thing you can do is pretend to be something that you're not, even if that's pretending to be something good." "We have to quit confusing prioritizing somebody else with prioritizing somebody else's priorities." "If you can't give your all, it's not worth it to them. It's not worth it to you."

We worry about upsetting them, or even ourselves, when we turn down requests. We often feel guilty for not doing what we're asked or wanted to do. However, saying no is acceptable and it can be done in a polite and respectful way. It helps you set boundaries and maintain your mental and emotional health. It also helps you make decisions based on what's best for you, instead of giving into peer pressure or feeling obligated to do something you don't want to.

Have you ever felt like everyone & everything is against you? Life just seems to be pushing and pushing against you. However, you are so used to pain that you tell yourself it doesn't matter. It doesn't hurt. We are so used to people hurting us and manipulating us that we begin to think there is something wrong with us.   Consider that there is nothing wrong with you. Life is trying to get your attention, as there is a lesson to be learned. The problem is a lack of boundaries. Specifically, the inability to say NO.   When we say YES to everyone else and whether that is more work than you can handle do some errands when we are already overbooked low pay crappy relationships abusive language someone taking advantage of our good heart   That is when we say NO to ourselves, our needs, and our desires. That is when we betray ourselves. That is when we put everyone else and everything else as more important than our well-being.   And I am sure you have heard that you can't give from an empty cap.   Your relationship with yourself is the most important relationship you can ever have. Yet, so many of us betray ourselves over and over.   No wonder so many people struggle with self-worth or/and self-esteem.     ----   LIKE THE EPISODE? Merrique was the sole moderator of a prolific group for traveling freelance models, unfortunately some horrible things outside her control happened within the model community and the backlash of it caused her to close that group down. It has been a few years now, and I wanted to chat with Merrique to see how she is doing since then.  She has learned to protect her energy by delving into various creative methods - modeling being just one of her many creative passions. You don't have to have a lot of money to get started in real estate. Our guest, Don Spafford, proved that you can hustle your way to financial success, and serve other people along the way.   In this Flashback Friday episode, Don looks back on how his personal struggles fueled his desire to be in a better financial position in order to help others improve their lives. He considers this as his mission, but he also has words of advice on finding the balance between helping and enabling.    Don Spafford has an educational and professional background in Finance and Securities Investing. His wife is from Paraguay and together they enjoy the opportunities they have to travel back to visit family there and to help the communities in South America. When his wife became a realtor around 2010, it motivated him to want to learn how to invest in Real Estate. The family moved from Nebraska to Idaho in 2015, and it was there in Idaho where they got started. He bought his first property, a four-plex, in 2017, then two more 18 months later. He began moving into commercial real estate including ground-up development projects and eventually landed with Happy Camper Capital, providing syndication opportunities in RV campgrounds. He enjoys spending as much time as he can with his family to create lasting memories. His hobbies include coin and bank-note collecting, traveling, and when he can, he likes to watch movies at home. Don has very high moral and religious standards and will not bend his beliefs for anything. His word is his bond.   ____________________________________________________ FREE Discovery call for The Microfamily Investing Accelerator  https://calendly.com/noirvest/microfamilymavericks   ____________________________________________________    [00:01 - 17:28] Who is Don Spafford? The Great Product Owner: Customer-Centric PO, Embracing the Gemba Walk as a Product Owner In this episode, the focus is on a remarkable product owner who actively engaged in the Gemba walk. The Gemba walk involves visiting the places where the team, staff, and customers interact to observe how the product is being consumed. The episode highlights that it is uncommon for product owners to actively participate in this practice. The exceptional product owner was known for his authenticity and commitment to his words. He demonstrated his dedication by being the first one present when the store opened and even disguised himself as a regular customer to gather valuable information. This genuine approach built trust as he shared insights that were not made up. The episode concludes by emphasizing the importance of checking one's ego at the door in order to truly understand and serve customers. The Bad Product Owner: CEO-like Pressure, Overcoming the Struggle to Say 'No' as a Product Owner In this episode, the focus is on a common anti-pattern of a product owner (PO) who struggles to say "no." The role of a PO is compared to that of a CEO, as they face immense pressure to deliver. The episode emphasizes the importance of having a strong backbone to effectively fulfill the responsibilities of a PO. The struggle to say "no" often leads to deviations from the planned direction and goals, causing challenges in achieving outcomes within quarterly cycles. Takunda shares some tips on how to help PO's stuck in this anti-pattern. We cover, for example, assessing whether the PO is taking on too many tasks, and considering the opportunity cost of not prioritizing the original goals. We also discuss the need to stick to the planned path and make changes in future sprints rather than pivoting impulsively.    [IMAGE HERE] Are you having trouble helping the team work well with their Product Owner? in today's episode, Jen and AJ are looking at Nehemiah's chapter 6 and talking about the different types of distractions that Nehemiah faced and how this relates to our lives today.Do you have a problem setting boundaries? With saying “No”? Nehemiah is an example of saying no to quite a few different things. He had the discernment to understand why he needed to say no, and why it was actually imperative for him to say no. And that's what we are talking about today! We can see from the life of Nehemiah, a great example of somebody who was a leader, yet lived in constant dependence on God. Let's use today's episode to remember our mission, and remember the reason that we MUST sometimes say no. Our mission is to build the kingdom of God and to glorify him so that he can draw others unto himself. Read the Show Notes here: sojohub.com/nehemiah080Support the showConnect with us: www.instagram.com/sojosocietyBecome a member: www.sojoacademy.comSojo Academy is an ongoing membership for Christian women that provides a practical, streamlined, spiritual growth plan for every woman.Support the Podcast: www.sojohub.com/supportHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.

One of the recurring themes when it comes to entrepreneurship is “valuation”. How much a company is “worth” is in many ways the tail that wags the enterprise dog in our times.I've asked this question to every single one of the guests on First Principles. But the answer from Kamal Sagar, the co-founder and CEO of Bangalore-headquartered real estate and design company Total Environment, still came as a bit of surprise. (Last year the company did around $250M in sales.) “I don't know what the valuation is,” said Sagar. “We didn't build it with the idea of selling it, so we haven't ever looked at that option.” And this is nearly 27 years after he started Total Environment.During that time, the company has charted a distinctly contrarian path for itself. At every stage of its evolution, it chose to do things that took more time, more money and more effort. It built its own design software. It vertically integrated its operations, down to the bricks, tiles and furniture that went into its homes. It stuck trees and lawns into balconies and roofs. It turned apartment designs into versioned products, much like productized software. In a candid and reflective conversation that spans his three decade career as an architect and entrepreneur, Sagar shows us an alternate view of building a company. A word that comes up multiple time in the conversation is “authenticity”.Starting with the “C” he got at IIT for being obstinate, to the many times he chose to take Total Environment down paths that traded rapid growth for slower design, Sagar gives us a glimpse into the incredibly inefficient, frustrating and lucrative sector that is real estate. If you'd rather (or perhaps also) read than listen, we have also published the full transcript for this interview on our website. You can click here and read through it.As usual, a big thanks to my colleague Rahul Choudhary who diligently helps me with the transcripts each fortnight. If you have any questions, thoughts, suggestions, or tips, please email them to podcasts@the-ken.com.
