We brought Arpwire TV showrunner Win2K front and center for "Hot Takes" episode 99! Co-host Roge Corp has been a member of the Arpwire TV team for some time now, so why not collaborate with the mastermind behind the nostalgia-themed channel himself? Known for their meticulously crafted homages to Y2K nostalgia and Frutiger Aero- and Metro-themed graphic design, our two hours' runtime was really only enough to scratch the surface of who Win2K is and what they create out of their love for the turn of the millennium. We got to hear about how much they hate the Malibu Ken album cover, along with how to create art from the heart while also gamifying the algorithm. Lots of video game talk transpired, along with some hot takes about David Wise's "Aquatic Ambience", in addition to a story about a video that Trent created as kind of an homage to "Everywhere at the End of Time", by The Caretaker. We got to hear his thoughts on industry plants, and Win2K told us the many stories behind the members of the Arpwire TV team, what they do, and how they met each other. These are just a small sampling of the highlights of this delightful episode with Win2K, so what do you say you watch or listen to the episode and let us know in the comments what your favorite moment was! "Hot Takes" is a safe space for all opinions! Join the conversation at https://linktr.ee/hottakesvapor

The theatrical experience 'Fight Back' invites audience members into an interactive experience. Each audience member is given a character, the identity of someone who attended a real ACT UP New York meeting on March 13, 1989. Once the show begins, they play out the meeting as participants. "Fight Back" is running two more shows, on May 11 and May 18. The show's creator, David Wise, discusses the theatrical experience, alongside producer George Straus, who also experienced the show as a participant. Photo by Joseph O'Malley
BGMania B-Sides #46 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bedroth turns the spotlight toward Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors II, the 1989 NES follow-up that leans harder into its dark fantasy tone while expanding on the original game's scope. It's a strange, ambitious sequel for its time... one that mixes platforming with a heavier emphasis on exploration and atmosphere, all wrapped in that unmistakable late-80s Nintendo-era design philosophy. This episode comes your way thanks to listener Heat00veride, whose request gives us a great excuse to revisit more work by David Wise. The soundtrack reflects that shift in tone almost immediately. At the same time, it never loses that classic NES identity, with sharp, memorable hooks cutting through the darker textures. Email the show at bgmaniapodcast@gmail.com with requests for upcoming episodes, questions, feedback, comments, concerns, or any other thoughts you'd like to share! Special thanks to our Executive Producers: Jexak, Xancu, Jeff & Mike. Today's episode is a tangible example of a company in the "natural capital" space. While not traditional agtech, the Hydrowood journey hits familiar themes: building a business within nature's constraints, managing capital intensity, and the frustrating search for the right investors.Andrew Morgan watched the Pieman River in Tasmania dam in the 1970s. In 1986, Lake Pieman flooded, submerging centuries-old forests. Many years later, he and co-founder David Wise spotted trees protruding from the dark water- large quantities of native species like Huon Pine, Tasmanian Myrtle, and Sassafras. The timber was salvageable, but they needed underwater logging technology that wouldn't disturb the lake's ecosystem. This led to the founding of Hydrowood. Today, the business has attracted millions in investment and high-end brand partnerships, but the journey has been far from easy.In this episode, guest host Adam Taylor, Insights Lead at Tenacious, and Andrew Morgan discuss:Why the Hydrowood narrative captivates investors and mediaTrading off custom versus standard machinery to lower financial riskPivoting to crowdfunding when traditional investment proved difficultThe future of sustainable and ethical forestryAndrew is also the Managing Director of SFM, an asset manager for large-scale plantation estates and carbon project developer.Useful Links:The economics of valuing natural capital, with Ken HenryHydrowood featured in first global flagship store by R.M WilliamsAustralian Carbon Credit Unit Scheme | Clean Energy RegulatorOnMarket crowd-sourced fundingForest Economics Congress, MONAFor more information and resources, visit our website. fWotD Episode 2974: Donkey Kong Land Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 26 June 2025, is Donkey Kong Land.Donkey Kong Land, known in Japan as Super Donkey Kong GB, is a 1995 platform game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy. It condenses the side-scrolling gameplay of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) game Donkey Kong Country (1994) for the handheld Game Boy with different level design and boss fights. The player controls the gorilla Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong as they defeat enemies and collect items across 30 levels to recover their stolen banana hoard from the crocodile King K. Rool.Development began in 1994, before Donkey Kong Country's completion, and lasted a year. Rare's Game Boy programmer, Paul Machacek, developed Land as an original game rather than as a port of Country after convincing Rare co-founder Tim Stamper it would be a better use of resources. Like Country, Land features pre-rendered graphics converted to sprites through a compression technique. Rare retooled Country's gameplay to account for the lower quality display, and David Wise and Graeme Norgate converted the soundtrack to the Game Boy's sound chip.Donkey Kong Land was released in mid-1995. It sold 3.91 million copies and received positive reviews. Critics praised it as successfully translating Country's gameplay, visuals, and music to the Game Boy, though they disagreed over whether it was an equal experience. Land was followed by Donkey Kong Land 2 (1996), Donkey Kong Land III (1997), and a Game Boy Color version of Country (2000), which attempted to replicate the SNES Country games more closely. Land and its sequels were rereleased for the Nintendo 3DS via the Virtual Console service in 2014, and on Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo Classics service in 2024.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:36 UTC on Thursday, 26 June 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Donkey Kong Land on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kevin.

Today, we're very excited to speak with David Wise, descendant of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and founder of Native Wise, a farm which is focused on soil health, restorative farming and Indigenous agricultural practices. David started his bison herd after a dream with Chief Buffalo, who told him to bring back his namesake. Starting with twelve, he now has a herd that numbers close to sixty, including Renegade and Brutus, two bulls that have become best buddies. The ranch is also home to three Ojibwe Spirit Horses. David and wife Patra teach their kids that good food is good medicine. They share that good medicine with the community through Native Wise's seasonal CSAs and online store.
It's DK time here at the Switch 2 The Past as Mike & Neil celebrate all things Kong-like in this part 1 of 2 episodes all about the big ape himself. This week friend of the show Kira @toonietwirls joins once again to discuss her love of the franchise and Diddy and Dixie in particular. And yes, the unbelievable David Wise score is discussed at length so stick around and you just may hear some Stickerbush Symphony sprinkled in.

Episode Summary In this episode, the RPGBOT hosts take a deep dive into the origin, design, and legacy of the Pokémon Jr. Adventure Game—a tabletop role-playing game released at the height of the Pokémon craze. Despite achieving strong initial sales, the game was ultimately considered a failure by its creators due to issues surrounding pricing, marketing strategy, and corporate oversight. The discussion navigates through the creative process behind the game, its design for a young audience, and how it served as many players' first introduction to TTRPGs. The episode also reflects on broader topics such as missed opportunities in the tabletop space, the tension between business decisions and creative intent, and what lessons developers and publishers can learn today. High sales numbers can mask deeper structural and strategic failures. Overestimation of demand and poor pricing strategies led to the game's early demise. Designers had little control over critical business decisions, including marketing and pricing. The game was meant to be a gateway for young players into the world of TTRPGs. Focus groups revealed that intuitive, non-text-dependent design was crucial for child audiences. Nostalgia plays a powerful role in how the game is remembered today. Internal company dynamics, including sales team competition, had real impacts on product success. Missed opportunities included additional product lines and long-term brand building. The industry must find ways to support innovation and community engagement to ensure future growth. It's easy to leave a job when you're miserable. It's way harder when you're happy. And David Wise loves his day job. And that's why the 34-year-old freeskier has decided to push to make his fourth Olympic Team despite being one of the older competitors in freeskiing. "I still love going out there and grinding and doing this day in and day out, and so I don't want to stop before I feel like I'm done," David said. David is a three-time Olympian who has won two gold medals and a silver in ski halfpipe. His trophy case is full of titles and awards he's won since he was a teenager. At 34, he's a veteran of his sport. But that's not the only thing that makes him stand out. David is also married and a father of two. That's unusual in his sport and he's always said having a family has given him a balance many athletes lack. His daughter homeschools and sometimes travels with him to training and competitions. "Now, my daughter's 13 years old," Wise said. "She has teenager problems." On this Dying to Ask: How to know if you're really happy at work The question David asked himself and his family when deciding to go for a 4th Olympic Team. What David is not willing to do to stay in his job And advice on how to achieve work-life balance from an Olympic dad Check out my TV story on David Wise here: Other places to listen CLICK HERE to listen on iTunes CLICK HERE to listen on Stitcher CLICK HERE to listen on Spotify

He rose up and became a lord of his castle, saved many innocents from evil clowns, and even started his own video game company. Text us and say hello! In episode 15 of "Backwards Compatible", Lou is back in the studio with me, as we swing into the jungles of "Donkey Kong Country" on the SNES, released in November of 1994. I first encountered this game as a rental at a friend's house—the same friend whose "Super Mario World" save file I unfortunately erased (sorry, Dane!). Revisiting it now, the game stands out for its exceptional level design, arguably among the best for side-scrolling platformers. Its gameplay mechanics, inspired by Mario's run button and Sonic's rhythmic precision, showcase the unique platforming challenges that set "Donkey Kong Country" apart.Developed by the acclaimed studio Rare and published by Nintendo, "Donkey Kong Country" was one of the first major titles to utilize pre-rendered 3D graphics, created on Silicon Graphics workstations. This innovative approach resulted in some of the most detailed and realistic visuals on the SNES. The game also boasted a memorable soundtrack by David Wise, Eveline Fischer, and Robin Beanland, with tracks like "Aquatic Ambience" and "Gang-Plank Galleon" that are still celebrated today. Despite my burning hatred for the minecart levels, the game's commercial success and critical acclaim are undeniable. It revitalized the Donkey Kong franchise and established Rare as a powerhouse that would go on to create other hits like "Banjo Kazooie" and "Killer Instinct."As we explore "Donkey Kong Country's" development, graphical breakthroughs, and gameplay, we also reflect on the pop culture milestones of 1994, setting the scene for when this groundbreaking game first captivated players around the world. Join Lou and me as we delve into the legacy of a game that not only defined an era but also continues to influence the platforming genre across gaming generations.Support the Show. We've got merch!Check out the site for some awesome Gen 'S' swag :)
