The Vinyl Community Podcasts is a hidden gem in the world of podcasts that I wish I had discovered sooner. With its diverse range of topics, genres, and hosts, there is always something new to listen to at least twice a week. It has quickly become a "must-listen" for me.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is its variety. The hosts cover a wide range of topics related to vinyl records, from discussions on specific albums or artists to insights into the history and culture surrounding vinyl. This diversity keeps each episode fresh and engaging, ensuring that there is something for every listener's taste. Additionally, the hosts themselves are knowledgeable and passionate about vinyl, creating an authentic and enjoyable listening experience.
Another great aspect of this podcast is its chronological exploration of different eras and trends in music. Starting from the early days of vinyl up until more recent times, the podcast takes listeners on a journey through time, shedding light on interesting facts and events along the way. As someone who appreciates music history, I found this approach fascinating and it gave me a deeper appreciation for vinyl as a medium.
While it's hard to find any major flaws with The Vinyl Community Podcasts, one minor downside could be that some episodes may not be as relevant or interesting to certain listeners depending on their musical tastes or level of interest in vinyl. However, given the wide range of topics covered by the podcast, this is only a minor issue that can easily be skipped over by choosing episodes that appeal more directly to personal preferences.
In conclusion, The Vinyl Community Podcasts is an incredible find for anyone interested in vinyl records and music history. With its diverse topics, engaging hosts, and chronological exploration of different eras in music, it offers something for everyone. This episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts features an in-depth interview hosted by Americana Sam with Glenn Gretlund, the passionate force behind 7a Records — the UK-based label dedicated to preserving music history and giving forgotten recordings a second life on physical media. Known throughout the vinyl and Monkees fan communities for their meticulous archival releases, Glenn shares the story behind 7a Records and the label's mission to celebrate and restore the solo catalogs and overlooked works connected to the four members of The Monkees. Beyond Monkees-related releases, the conversation also explores 7a's work with legendary artists including Dave Edmunds, Macy Gray, Paul Young, Peter Noone, and Mungo Jerry. Americana Sam and Glenn dive into what it's really like operating a small independent record label in today's music industry, the ongoing importance of vinyl and physical media, the challenges of archival restoration, and why preserving music history matters now more than ever. For fans of vinyl culture, music preservation, independent labels, and classic pop-rock history, this is a fascinating behind-the-scenes discussion you won't want to miss. The plane is in the hangar. The crew is de-boarding. But the seats are still not fully in the complete upright positions. That only means that we have some more BONUS TRAX to discuss following the latest episode of SURFACE NOISE! First, would you feel comfortable selling a G+ record (or worse) online for all to see? Maybe at a record show, where you can talk through the purchase to another vinyl enthusiast, perhaps even to a friend of sorts. But to sell to (often times) a stranger....different story. Or no? To close these extra meanderings, we opine about what happened to dance programs of the youngs - from American Bandstand, to Soul Train, to Club MTV or The Grind - these shows no longer exist; does that mean young people no longer dance? Or socialize in this fashion? What about the legendary music that debuted during those programs? Another lost avenue for a band or artist to get their footing in a burgeoning career? Welcome back to SURFACE NOISE — the show of record, talking records. Join the panel as we dive into the latest current events across the vinyl record collecting world, break down hot topics shaping the hobby today, and share real-world perspectives from collectors who live this culture every day. In the current events segment, we hit on: (1) The loss of a producer who made early Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, and solo John Lennon records sound great (Jack Douglas) (2) The Beach Boys - "Pet Sounds" One Step (DSS) is ready to ship. Is the "hype train" in full effect, making us itch with FOMO? (3) The official news of "Chad Fest" - The 40th Anniversary Celebration of Acoustic Sounds has landed. What do we think of the news, the pricing, and the vinyl fellowship in store direct from Salina, KS Oct 15-18th? From there the guys discuss an often misunderstood myth about vinyl - that everything on vinyl automatically sounds better....or warmer...or worth it. We dig into some of the real recipe for a good sounding record, regardless of the format it's released on, including the continued return of CD's (they are back, BAYBAY). Why do some other forms of physical media sound better to us (calling all cassette fans, 8-track collections, and even reel-to-reel enthusiasts) also outperform their vinyl counterparts? From vinyl trends, market shifts, pressing quality, record store culture, Discogs debates, audiophile upgrades, concert memories, rare finds, collecting strategies, and everything in between — no topic is off limits on SURFACE NOISE - the show that aims to inform, entertain, and even complain. From explosive growth and mainstream popularity to rising prices and reissue overload, this conversation pulls no punches. With some many options and so little time, how do we consistently support each other in the vinyl battlefield of opinions, takes, and time stealing content? What caused this explosion of content creation? Are the motivations different than they were before the pandemic-inspired explosion of the hobby? Or is this simply the rest of social media catching up to a legacy hobby of vintage collecting goodness? Step back inside the world of rare records and serious collecting as Vinyl Community Podcasts presents a special interview hosted by Concert Buddie with one of the most respected names in vinyl record dealing—Craig Moerer, founder and owner of Records By Mail. In this episode, Craig shares the fascinating story behind building one of the most trusted destinations for rare and hard to find vinyl. From the early days of mail-order record dealing to operating a global online marketplace for collectors based from his website and every platform record collectors persue (eBay, Discogs, Amazon, etc.), Craig offers a behind-the-scenes look at how the rare record business really works. For decades, Records By Mail has been a global destination for rare vinyl records, collectible LPs, 45s, and music memorabilia. This BONUS TRAX episode sets the hobby back decades (not really). We kick off the extra session with a little collector honesty in “Did I Really Buy That?”—a segment where we confess to the vinyl purchases we probably didn't need… but bought anyway. Impulse buys, questionable upgrades, strange finds, and those records that somehow made it into the collection. No regrets… well, maybe a few. A brief detour to some talk about liquid-filled vinyl and should they be slabbed serves as an ominous interlude before an unexpected power outage drives the dais into rapid fire music talk mode by showing as many records as they can while the power resumes at the Concert Buddie compound. Sprinkle some music-inspired literary and cinematic takes, and we land this BONUS TRAX plane right before it implodes. The BONUS TRAX came in hot this week with an update from a shipping fiasco with Rhino Hi-Fi (tears may have been shed). What follows came an impromptu Beatles discussion that caught many off guard. Bong launches his patented verbal bows and arrows into the new Paul McCartney: Man on the Run documentary, which opens the floodgates to all kinds of feelings on the Liverpool Four. Following those spicy takes, the guys discuss the role social media plays in the artificial (or real) hype train(s) that have our wallets sometimes begging for mercy. It is deliberate? Calculated? Dumb luck? Or simply over saturation we create in our own feeds trying to chase down more elusive vinyl prizes? Only way to win is to play, right? Get ready for another deep-dive vinyl discussion on the next SURFACE NOISE — where record collecting culture meets real-time current events.

Discogs has become the backbone of modern record collecting — a sprawling, user-built archive that powers buying, selling, cataloging, and pricing across the globe. But with that influence comes responsibility… and controversy. For the glorious BONUS TRAX following the latest podcast episode of SURFACE NOISE, the conversation turns to one of the most debated topics in the vinyl collecting world: Should record collectors contribute to the Discogs global database? We break down the pros and cons of adding entries, editing submissions, and becoming an active database contributor. Leading to a bigger question: is contributing to Discogs a community service? A civic duty of collecting? Or is it unpaid labor that benefits sellers more than archivists? Whether you're a power contributor with hundreds of submissions or a collector who has never touched the “Add Release” button, this episode explores the ethical, practical, and philosophical sides of maintaining the world's largest music database. Closing the show out, Jason Roxas shares his experiences at the debut offering of Vinyl Con: Atlanta and whether this series of regional record shows is worth the squeeze. The show of record, talking records - SURFACE NOISE - is back to discuss whether vinyl record collecting is becoming too expensive for new collectors.

For the latest second helping of SURFACE NOISE, this episode of BONUS TRAX is going to hit a nerve (for some). When it comes to collecting vinyl records, where is the line drawn between "collecting" versus "accumulating"? Are you actually listening to what you are bringing into your collection, or merely creating your own archive of music on wax? Are you buying with intention, or simply buying everything you see? And when does a "good deal" collide with a "completionist" approach? Lots of opinions on this one. What is yours? Before you spin that next black circle, let SURFACE NOISE inform, entertain, and complain! For this latest rendition of the program, we go through some current events including updated release dates from Acoustic Sounds on some long awaited Bob Marley titles and a new Beach Boys boxset highly coveted by their fan base (and already sold out on their webstore). Add in a couple other new releases out this weekend, and consider the "inform" box checked! ✅ The panel then delves into a conversation about whether record collectors today are too critical - expectations in quality, value, and sound just scratch the surface (pun not intentional). Does a critique often become misconstrued as being critical? And should we always be critical in evaluating what we are bringing into our collections, and why we collect? So many questions! Grab the oven mitt,

Much more cookin' in the kitchen of SURFACE NOISE with this extra helping of BONUS TRAX to digest!

The tap is back on at Vinyl Community Podcasts as Alex (Beer & Vinyl) returns to the airwaves with an insightful chat with the founder/owner of Colemine Records Terry Cole. Coleman Records was founded in late 2007 by Terry and Louis Rideout as a way to release music they loved, starting with an album from their own band and evolved into a significant independent soul and funk label, later expanding with his brother Bob in the form of the independent shop Plaid Room Records in Loveland, OH in 2015. Colemine has released amazing vinyl contemporary soul, funk, and indie pop from arists like Durand Jones & The Indications, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, Monophonics, as well as artists like Neal Francis and Kendra Morris. As we close 2025 here on Vinyl Community Podcasts, the last BONUS TRAX segment of the year features a spirited debate amongst the SURFACE NOISE crew about the greatest (and worst) Christmas/Holiday songs in existence. Dishes were smashed. Names were called. And we find Arnaldo is not a fan of Saint Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime"....like the opposite of big fan. Like hates it, hates it.
