We kick off SURFACE NOISE talking about the sudden announcement of the Beatles + Mono boxset repress coming in a few weeks: who is picking it up, why repress this again (first since 2014), and what will these mean for those who already have the 2014 version and will likely see their value plummet. Then, as the Surface Noise Boys begins summer hours, our panel of vinylists discuss the greatest "what if's" in music history. Back on the airwaves of Vinyl Community Podcasts, Alex (Beer & Vinyl) shares a recent interview with musician/songwriter M Ross Perkins. M Ross Perkins is currently a featured artist on the Colemine Records label, and has a new album that dropped on May 2nd (interview recorded prior) entitled "What's The Matter, M Ross?" Composed, performed, and recorded completely by Perkins in his Dayton, OH studio, What's the Matter… is both the most stripped down and expansive within his tryptic of albums ("Wrong, Wrong, Wrong", "E Pluribus M Ross", and Now "What's The Matter..."). The headphone symphonies move with a deliberate, composed sophistication while the lyrics explore fresh territory, turning the camera away from the “butterscotch revue” and pointing it into a mirror. "The touchstones of psych pop remain: flourishes of Nilsson are still here, but so are Gram Parsons and Jonathan Richman. If you want to assign geography to What's the Matter, M Ross?, the album is equal parts Laurel Canyon and Big Pink, more Woodstock the town than the festival. Perkins is a self-contained (late-period) Teenage Fanclub with George Harrison's spiritual sense of inner wanderlust. Want a free copy? For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts, we have a guest and a conversation so rare, so valuable, so unique, that we had to enlist another host to reign in this collecting madness! Joined in the co-pilot seat by Spinz Vinyl (Jason), we speak with Wayne Johnson: co-owner and co-founder of Rockaway Records in Silver Lake, CA. Founded alongside brother Gary Johnson in 1979, Rockaway has seen the peaks, valleys, and rebirth of music on vinyl, while also growing, shrinking, and pivoting their business in various forms along the way.
