Abstract: Various implementations of mesoscopes provide optical access for calcium imaging across multi-millimeter fields-of-view (FOV) in the mammalian brain. However, capturing the ac-tivity of the neuronal population within such FOVs near-simultaneously and in a volumetric fashion has remained challenging since approaches for imaging scattering brain tissues typically are based on sequential acquisition. Here, we present a modular, mesoscale light field (MesoLF) imaging hardware and software solution that allows recording from thou-sands of neurons within volumes of O 4000 x 200 m, located at up to 400 m depth in the mouse cortex, at 18 volumes per second. Our optical design and computational approach enable up to hour-long recording of ~10,000 neurons across multiple cortical areas in mice using workstation-grade computing resources. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.11.511633v1?rss=1 Authors: Verinaz-Jadan, H., Howe, C. L., Song, P., Lesept, F., Kittler, J., Foust, A. J., Dragotti, P. L. Abstract: Light Field Microscopy (LFM) is an imaging technique that offers the opportunity to study fast dynamics in biological systems due to its rapid 3D imaging rate. In particular, it is attractive to analyze neuronal activity in the brain. Unlike scanning-based imaging methods, LFM simultaneously encodes the spatial and angular information of light in a single snapshot. However, LFM is limited by a trade-off between spatial and angular resolution and is affected by scattering at deep layers in the brain tissue. In contrast, two-photon (2P) microscopy is a point-scanning 3D imaging technique that achieves higher spatial resolution, deeper tissue penetration, and reduced scattering effects. However, point-scanning acquisition limits the imaging speed in 2P microscopy and cannot be used to simultaneously monitor the activity of a large population of neurons. This work introduces a physics-driven deep neural network to image neuronal activity in scattering volume tissues using LFM. The architecture of the network is obtained by unfolding the ISTA algorithm and is based on the observation that the neurons in the tissue are sparse. The deep-network architecture is also based on a novel imaging system modeling that uses a linear convolutional neural network and fits the physics of the acquisition process. To achieve the high-quality reconstruction of neuronal activity in 3D brain tissues from temporal sequences of light field (LF) images, we train the network in a semi-supervised manner using generative adversarial networks (GANs). We use the TdTomato indicator to obtain static structural information of the tissue with the microscope operating in 2P scanning modality, representing the target reconstruction quality. We also use additional functional data in LF modality with GCaMP indicators to train the network. Our approach is tested under adverse conditions: limited training data, background noise, and scattering samples. We experimentally show that our method performs better than model-based reconstruction strategies and typical artificial neural networks for imaging neuronal activity in mammalian brain tissue, considering reconstruction quality, generalization to functional imaging, and reconstruction speed. Tomas Sluka is the CEO and co-founder of CREAL, a Swiss technology startup that developed and commercializes a radically new type of display that brings natural focal depth to a truly 3D visual experience within Augmented Reality. The inspiration for CREAL originated with the first commercial VR and AR headsets back in 2014. Like many others, Tomas suffered from very strong eye-strain and lack of immersion. He realized that the problem came from nonexistent focal depth in the 3D imagery. Since then, he and his growing team have been working to solve these problems and dramatically improve the visual experience.Prior to founding CREAL, Tomas worked as a research engineer at CERN's particle detectors and as a researcher at EPFL on the development of electronic nano-devices. He earned a PhD in Mechatronics, is a co-/author of over 50 scientific publications—multiple in top-ranking journals—as well as 10 patent applications, and is a regular speaker at prestigious conferences. In this conversation, we talk about the visual discomfort many of us feel, called vergence accommodation conflict, in today's AR and VR devices. Tomas describes how our eyes work and the difference between natural 3D and the stereo 3D we get in today's devices. We discuss light fields, how CREAL is able to achieve them, and the implication on the display technology. We go on to discuss early applications of the technology, the path to lightfield AR glasses, and Tomas's journey as a founder. You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com.

This week I wanted to write about a new style of photography that I have recently started playing with, called Light Field photography.
Depending on where you live, one could say that we're going through a bit of a renewal. COVID cases are dropping, people are eating out, and as we've chronicled, live music is back! So it's appropriate, then, that my next guest and his band are going through a rebirth of their own. Berkeley, Ca., based The Jenny Thing (www.thejennything.com) first came to be in 1991. Their music blended 80s synth pop with the industrial rock sound popularized by 90s bands like Nine Inch Nails. The band was a West-Coast touring mainstay before calling it quits in 1999. As we get ready to venture back out into the world, The Jenny Thing is giving it another go as well. On this episode of For Songs, I speak with Matt Easton, lead singer and co-songwriter for The Jenny Thing. We talk about what led to the band's return engagement—American Canyon, released in early June 2021. We discuss four songs off the album: Paper Angel, American Canyon, Lightfield, and Waiting for the Knife. Matt talks about how the songwriting process works between himself and guitarist Shaom Rao, and just what a 90s band influenced by 80s music sounds like. Sometimes texture and space is just as important as driving bass and fresh guitars! So tune in!
James reunites with Bryan and Mike for another new episode of Geek at Arms! In Geek Out James talks about braving the movie theaters with his daughter to see Raya and the Last Dragon and gives his thoughts on the Snyder Cut of Justice League. Next Bryan shares some news about new technology for VR headsets called Light Field and discusses WandaVision with the others. Mike talks about finally getting to play the game Emberwind: The Skies of Axia and how much he's enjoyed reading His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik. Finally, in the last movie of the Historic Fiction Film Club the guys take a look at the 1958 period adventure film The Hidden Fortress from legendary director Akira Kurosawa.

L., Schultz, S. R., Foust, A. J. Abstract: Light field microscopy (LFM) enables high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), light efficient volume imaging at fast frame rates, and has been successfully applied to single-cell resolution functional neuronal calcium imaging. Voltage imaging with genetically encoded voltage indicators (GEVIs) stands to particularly benefit from light field microscopy's volumetric imaging capability due to high required sampling rates, and limited probe brightness and functional sensitivity. Previous LFM studies have imaged GEVIs to track population-level interactions only in invertebrate preparations and without single cell resolution. Here we demonstrate sub-cellular resolution GEVI light field imaging in acute mouse brain slices resolving dendritic voltage signals localized in three dimensions. We characterize the effects of different light field reconstruction techniques on the SNR and signal localization and compare the SNR to fluorescence transients imaged in wide field. Our results demonstrate the potential of light field voltage imaging for studying dendritic integration and action potential propagation and backpropagation in 3 spatial dimensions. We begin, with somber yet adorable disposition, with Hollow Knight by Christopher Larkin and Ghost Ramp. This not-on-PS-Vita metroidvania roguelike has captured the hearts and imaginations of gamers across multiple platforms, including our own Anthony John Agnello. Anthony describes the game's style and vibe, and illustrates it with a couple of selections from the spooky-sad-cute score. Don't let any maggots near your records! We continue our high-speed topsy-turvy journey begins with Lightfield, from Minimum Records. This electronic, sometimes amelodic soundtrack by Zanshin, both challenges and enthuses us from a listening standpoint, and the presentation is oh-so-pretty! We explore the unique aspects of the game and the music it employs. Simon gives us a few insights into the production of this release and a few little details that make it special. We continue our discussion into the "omg now-time" of the gamemusicvinylverse, picking out some special releases of note, what's currently shipping, and what you should look forward to! Finally, we put Mr. Jones under the hot lights for a look at Minimum Records. This little indie label has some interesting beginnings, with a tie to one host's past! Simon tells us a little about his curation process, we ruminate on the "regionality" of record labels, and at the risk of his VERY LIFE, Simon lets us know one (and a half?) of his upcoming and heretofore unannounced releases.
Chris and Ade explore the the ways new technology can help you make fantastic photos.
We dive into the emerging arena of “computational photography” -- where cameras capture increasingly complex data that computers process to enable imagery never before possible. One of the most mind blowing areas of “Computational Photography” is “Light Field” imagery, which redefines much of what we took for granted about photo capture. With “Light Field” captures, we can change focus, depth of field and aperture at any point after the image has been taken. It also enables some degree of camera angle positioning to be adjusted in post-production. Or when viewing in frameless Augmented or Virtual Reality, it enables the viewer to move side-to-side and see the angel-of-view in the environment adjust real-time with your body positioning. The leader in “Light Field” photography is a company called Lytro. Our guest today is Steven Swanson, the Executive Director of Content Partnerships for Lytro. Steven is active in many of the most bold, innovative media-tech projects today. Prior to Joining Lytro, Steven was a VFX Supervising Producer with Luma Pictures, one of the most prominent Hollywood VFX houses. We explore the current state and potential of “Light Field” photography, dive into Lytro’s next-generation product the “Volume Light Tracer”, and get Steven’s insight into the evolution of immersive media.
This week the gang (EIC Ben, Reviews Editor Richard and Home Counties Editor Joel) talk about: The Loot Box Controversy. Are they gambling, are they the future, what does the government think? Are Activision making evil plans? Doom is coming to the Nintendo SWITCH in a few weeks time on November 10. The Oculus Go announced by Facebook. IGN acquired Humble Bundle. It’s that spooky time of year, so we talk about our favourite scary games. … Talking of scary games, we lament the demise of Visceral Games (a memorial to Dead Space) and what that may mean for single-player Star Wars titles. Rogue Trooper: Redux, Battle Chasers: Nightwar, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, Evil Within 2, Middle Earth: Shadow of War, Ogre (2017), Lightfield, X-morph Defence, WWE 2K18, Cuphead, Super Metroid, The Solus Project (VR).
On today's show, Marc starts off talking about Broadcast News, a great film about, well, broadcast news, and then dives into a handful of indie games, including Lightfield, Infinite Minigolf, Super Hydorah, and 88 Heroes - 98 Heroes Edition. Anyway, something-something newsy and golfy, cheers and enjoy the anime-zing(ly disappointing) show. Anyway, that's it and that's all folks, and, if you're feeling extra generous, you can become a patron, donate a little something-something, or subscribe to show your support for the site, podcast(s), and all the ridiculous jazz we make over here at Pixelated Sausage. And don't forget, you can also support the site by shopping at Amazon if that's your jam--you can probably buy jam on Amazon too.

In this transmission you will connect with high angelic forces and utilise the crystal and planetary grids to lay the foundation to upgrade your energy system to a unified chakra field. The Unified Chakra creates a sphere of Light around you that assists you in handling higher and more intense waves of energy. It also helps you to open more fully to the ascension process. The steps in this transmission are as follows: 1. Angelic forces (Raphael, Michael, Gabriel, and Auriel) build a light sphere around you. Then we call on the higher frequencies of the crystal grid and the planetary grid. 2. We call upon Metatron and Sandalphon to protect the above and below space and then to open the Gaia-Solar circuit in your energy field. 3. You go through the unified chakra process. Starting in the heart we expand your field so that all the chakras become unified in one great sphere of light. This process expands your light until it embraces the earth, then the solar system, then the universe. 4. After resting in this expanded state we contract the field to the Alpha and Omega chakras (8 inches above the head and below the spine respectively. Here the field is sealed and protected. 5. We release the crystal and planetary grids and thank the angelic forces.

Recent advancements in laser technology are quickly moving the frontiers of research: quantum dynamics can now be investigated in more detail, on new timescales, with an unprecedented level of control. These new possibilities offer a new ground for the theoretical study of fundamental processes; at the same time, a proper understanding of phenomena involved is necessary to explain measurements, and to indicate directions for further experiments. This Thesis deals with the theoretical investigation of particular cases of light-matter interaction, in atoms and in dielectrics. Regimes considered here have just become a subject of intensive investigation: they are acquiring more and more relevance as technological advancements make them experimentally accessible. In the first part of the Thesis I consider a process as fundamental as the single-photon ionization of atoms: my modeling will include an ultrashort pulse (full width half maximum ~ 100 as = 10^-16 s) exciting an electron to the continuum, and a strong few-cycle near-infrared laser field. This configuration is suitable to reproduce recent streaking experiments on atoms. I developed a numerical tool to simulate these dynamics in three dimensions: the process is quite elaborate and requires an adequate description of multi-electron atoms. With proper approximations I was able to calculate photoelectron spectra using just a few dipole matrix elements, which were obtained with the aid of our external collaborators, from refined atomic structure calculations. The results of our relatively simple tool are in very good agreement with more sophisticated numerical calculations. In addition to that, I discuss my contribution to the theoretical support of a fundamental experiment [I]: both simulations and measurements indicate a delay between two different channel of photoemission in neon. A careful investigation of the limit of validity of approximations employed reveals that the Coulomb-Volkov approximation is not suitable to describe fine details of the interaction with the laser pulse. I also report on our analysis of experimental data from angle-resolved attosecond streaking. The second part of the Thesis is devoted to the investigation of inter-band excitations in dielectrics; driving this process with a high degree of control is on the edge of current technology. The ultrafast creation of charge carriers in an insulator is intriguing: dielectric properties of the medium change drastically, revealing features of the peculiar electron dynamics in such a situation. I have simulated this process solving the time dependent Schroedinger equation for a single electron in a one-dimensional lattice and analyzed how the charge Q displaced during the interaction with the pulse depends on laser parameters. These calculations reproduce to a good extent the behavior observed in the experiment. Both the theory and the experiment point out a strong dependence of Q on laser parameters: this promises a high degree of control, and at the same time suggests the possibility of a solid-state device to characterize an optical pulse. I also study in detail the modification occurring in the electric response of the sample to the electric field. The purpose of this analysis is to identify some features directly related to dynamics of newly created charge carriers. During my investigation of electron dynamics during an excitation process, I have often faced the difficulty to identify quantities which might resemble eigenstates of the time-dependent Hamiltonian. Similar field-dressed states would describe the distortion due to the field, of eigenstates of the field-free Hamiltonian. A proper definition of field-dressed states would allow a correct interpretation of the wavefunction in terms of instantaneous excited population, which is otherwise impossible to define.
