Hello Adventurers! Wait, is that how it goes for this? Does it even matter? Who knows! So this episode, theoretically a "bonus" episode, is actually a product of two years worth of work. In 2024, over the course of two different panels at MomoCon and KamiCon HAI (RIP), we had panels where we attempted to rank all the mainline Final Fantasies (plus two bonus games). As we had different people on each panel, we of course had two different rankings! What was a podcast to do? Well, all six of us got together to record One Final (Fantasy) Podcast to determine the final ranking. This is that episode! PS You may notice that we have not indicated if this is an OSMcast! or a Carbuncle Chronicle episode. That's because it's both! Almost all of the OSMcast! side, and all of The Carbuncle Chronicle side are in this, AND it covers Final Fantasy XIV to boot, so it made sense to just call it an episode for both. OSMnotesWhoo boy! This was a real pain to edit! But Basil also got real extra with the audio and music for the episode this time, so we hope you enjoy the half a year he took at poking and prodding this thing into Listenable Audio™. Anyroad, have some Time Cues:We start the OSMcast!ing – 00:00General Gabbing (Introductions and explaining The Process) – 02:04The Great Final Fantasy Ranking!Part I: Where we talk about all the Final FantasiesFinal Fantasy I - 04:44Final Fantasy II - 10:36Final Fantasy III - 17:06Final Fantasy IV - 21:45Final Fantasy V - 32:13Final Fantasy VI - 35:37Final Fantasy VII - 41:41Final Fantasy VIII - 49:56Final Fantasy IX - 53:49Final Fantasy X - 58:24Bonus Game: Final Fantasy Tactics - 01:05:00Final Fantasy XI - 01:09:05Final Fantasy XII - 01:11:48Bonus Game: Lost Odyssey - 01:15:58Final Fantasy XIII - 01:21:18Final Fantasy XIV - 01:27:30Final Fantasy XV - 01:34:24Final Fantasy XVI - 1:38:10Part II: Where we actually rank said Final FantasiesThe Battle Begins - 01:41:39The Battle Ends - 02:03:09Oh! Both for OSMcast proper and The Carbuncle Chronicle! Please subscribe, hit the bell, and share amongst your friends. And as always, feel free to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts! Oh, and if you still use Spotify, go ahead and get on that mobile device and throw us some five stars there too. Tell your friends! In this first episode of a new series discovering the music of Final Fantasy, Ryan Laney of Airship Overdrive joins us to do a DEEP DIVE breakdown of Liberi Fatali from Final Fantasy VIII.
We wrap up our conversation on FFVIII with our thoughts on its core themes and values and try our best to explain why this quirky game lives so deeply inside the hearts of so many people.
We discuss the heavy hitters of the FFVIII OST including both Find and Force Your Way, The Man With the Machine Gun, Balamb Garden, and Eyes on Me.
Drew ranks his Top 40 songs on the Final Fantasy 8 soundtrack, beginning with the bold claim that this is the best OST in the history of the franchise.
Trevor and Jeff kick off October with a live taste test of a 10% pumpkin ale (it goes… badly), celebrate the pure joy of Hades II (with “God Mode” as the ultimate dad setting), recap a wholesome Hollow Knight all-night kids' sleepover, and confess to using Final Fantasy VIII cheats to finally experience the story—25 years later. We wrap with a classic “beat your kids (while you still can)” dad-race anecdote. If you're a gaming father (or future one) figuring out how to balance kids, work, and your backlog—this one's for you.
We get pretty emotional talking about one of the single most beautiful, epic, and strange, conclusions to a Final Fantasy story... or any story... ever.

We welcome back our in-house MCU experts, Nico Vasilo and Kevo Risse, to talk about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2! Will it hold up in an era of superhero burnout? Will Nico and Kevo like it more than they did when they covered it for mcu.html? We find out! After Nico takes James Gunn down a peg, we compare this Guardians film to Superman (2025), talk about the issues with Yondu redemption, and compare the Fast Family to the Guardians with regards to how they approach working together (and being a found family). We ask for insights about Planet X. Nico compares this movie to Final Fantasy VIII. Kevo explains the problem with Adam Warlock. There's lots of Fleetwood Mac talk, for some reason. Nico points out the vehicality of this film. Email us: family@cageclub.meVisit our Patreon page at patreon.com/2fast2forever. We reach the late-game exposition dump of FFVIII where Laguna and Dr. Odine explain the history of Rain and Ellone and the future of Sorceress Ultimecia.#finalfantasy #ffviii
Part 3 of the three mailbags after Final Fantasy VIII! We mostly focus on Zelda emails, discussing such subjects as the origin of the Cobble Kingdom, the relationship between Porky and Ganon, and Farore's variable elemental theming.
We FINALLY get back to talking about FFVIII (under new branding!) and get to some of the best and most emotional moments including a beautiful embrace between Squall and Rinoa.
Part 2 of the three mailbags after Final Fantasy VIII! We respond to both Final Fantasy and Zelda questions, discussing such subjects as the possibility of a Squall-Rinoa breakup, the presence of the Chaoskampf motif in Zelda, and whether watching video game commercials is a better experience than actually playing the games.
Part 1 of the three mailbags after Final Fantasy VIII! We focus on Final Fantasy questions, discussing such subjects as characterization issues in FF8, the Shinra-Wutai War, and the limitations of stories that are about good guys vs bad guys.
In one of the coolest and most heart-wrenching segments in all of Final Fantasy, the heroes of FFVIII go to space!
All space and time compresses into a single beautiful moment.
The SeeDs meet the President of Esthar, and develop a plan to confront the Ultimate Sorceress.
The Sorceress' true plan is revealed as Rinoa and Squall cross time and space to stay together.
Sorceress Edea is confronted once and for all, and Rinoa and Squall take a long walk by the sea.
FFVIII continues as Squall gains a deeper understanding of his own emotions, we contemplate our own introverted tendencies, and we finally make it to the incredible city of Esthar.
We finally get some answers about the succession of sorceress' the true role of Ellone and the incredibly bizarre machinations of someone named Ultimecia.
Squall has to learn to be a leader quickly as Garden clashes with Garden in one of the most amazing scenes in Final Fantasy history. Plus, more FFVIII weirdness!
We arrive at one of the more controversial plot twists in Final Fantasy history. #FinalFantasy #FinalFantasyVIII #FFVIII
What happens when pacifism is faced with encroaching fascism? Squall, our child-soldier hero, wrestles with the nature of violence and his own insistence on not relying on anyone else.
We (finally!) continue with Final Fantasy VIII as we get a classic FF status quo shift and the story gets even weirder and more complicated.
On the 100th episode of Final Fantasy Weekly (where did the time go?) we continue down the path of FFVIII at the beginning of Disc Two. We get to spend a lot of time with Laguna in this one and that's always good.
We conclude the creepy and incredibly intense first disc of FFVIII. We ponder on Squall's moral relativism, Rinoa's rebellious nature, and Irvine's insecurities. Plus, some thoughts on how this iconic section could have been a bit smoother.

We get more Laguna, Kiros, and Ward including a tonally fascinating scene of gallows humor... we think. We hear about Esthar, go to Galbadia Garden, and Squall contemplates being remembered after death.
Strategy guides were a huge part of many a gamers' childhood. I read my strategy guide for Final Fantasy VIII so much that the spine started falling apart. These books felt like we were getting a peak behind the scenes of how the game's inner workings actually functioned. To help us peak further behind that curtain, I am joined this week by David Cassady. David worked at Brady Games and Prima Games during their heyday and wrote some of our favorite strategy guides. Guides such as Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Kingdom Hearts 2, Metroid Prime and many more! We talked about how he got into writing guides, what the process of writing them was, unexpected challenges and much more! In this lively episode of Wise_N_Nerdy, hosts Charles, Joe, and Kurt gather to answer the big question of the week: "Which celebrity chef would you most like to fix you Thanksgiving dinner?" Charles brings a twist by choosing Kurt himself to cook his meal, while Kurt dreams of a Thanksgiving feast crafted by BBQ legend Erin Franklin. Joe goes all-in with Iron Chef favorites Bobby Flay or Masaharu Morimoto to bring some culinary flair to the holiday. Afterward, the roll of the dice sets the crew on a nerdy deep-dive. For this week's “What are you Nerding Out About?” segment, the trio can't get enough of Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc. Charles is bursting with excitement about hosting his popular game show, Fandom Face-off, at the upcoming CONjuration convention. Joe's been diving into fantasy books, recently finishing Legends & Lattes in preparation for the event and loving every page. He's also created an extensive AutoHotkey script to max out character stats in Final Fantasy VIII—proof that he's embracing his inner tech nerd. Meanwhile, Kurt has been swept up in 3D printing projects, so much so that the others wonder if he might need a 3D-printing intervention! The dice then bring up a round of bad dad jokes courtesy of CaseyJay and Devocite, bringing laughter to the group. Following that, the "Daddy, tell me a story" segment gets personal as Joe recounts the uncertainty he faced arriving at college with only $50 to his name. Kurt shares his experience of hitting rock bottom after both he and his wife lost their jobs, and a listener's comment from RandomKid about job hunting sparks a reflective conversation on the current job market. Then, the "Parliament of Papas" segment unfolds into an enlightening discussion on libraries, with the hosts lamenting how underutilized these valuable resources have become. To wrap up, the “How do I...?” segment leads to an exchange of tips on the best ways to learn a new language, covering apps, online classes, and local resources. Packed with fandom and fatherhood insights, this episode of Wise_N_Nerdy is a true testament to how we each can “Find your FAMdom.” Tune in and join the conversation in Wise_N_Nerdy: Where Fatherhood Meets Fandom. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wise-n-nerdy/support
In this lively episode of Wise_N_Nerdy, Charles and Kurt kick things off with the classic "Question of the Week," asking, “What is your weirdest or funnest Halloween tradition?” Kurt confesses that his ideal Halloween involves turning off all the lights to avoid trick-or-treaters, while Charles recalls Halloween parties at his church that forever altered his feelings about the holiday. Just as the conversation is heating up, cohost Joe is hilariously "summoned" by RandomKid, joining the fun mid-episode. With the roll of the dice, the show moves on to the popular “Daddy, Tell Me a Story” segment. Charles shares a humorous tale about a too-real dream his wife had, where he cheated, causing her to be mad for days. Kurt recalls a similar experience—dreaming that his girlfriend cheated on him with his brother and waking up furious enough to confront his sibling! These stories set the tone for a segment that's both funny and a bit surreal. The dice then select “How do I…?” Charles weighs the costs of fixing his daughter's car against a replacement, while Kurt discusses his philosophy on being prepared for worst-case scenarios with solid backup plans. Next up is a series of Halloween-themed “Bad Dad Jokes,” which leaves everyone groaning and laughing in equal measure. The episode rolls on to a SpeakPipe from listener Devocite, who shares insights on the importance of computer backups. This sparks a valuable discussion, highlighting the tech wisdom every parent should keep in their toolbox. In the “Parliament of Papas” segment, the crew dives into a thoughtful debate about when to introduce kids to Marvel movies and TV shows, helping parents find the best ways to navigate fandom with their children. True to their motto, the Wise_N_Nerdy hosts encourage everyone to “Find your FAMdom,” balancing fun and family values. The show wraps with “What are you Nerding Out About?” Kurt shares his excitement about setting up the Pokémon TCG Pocket on his PC, while Charles enthusiastically discusses his adventures in Tiny Tina's Wonderland and compares it to the upcoming Borderlands movie. Joe, for his part, reveals his latest passion for AutoHotKey, having written a script to farm materials in Final Fantasy VIII. He also mentions watching the classic Planet of the Apes series with his wife for her first viewing—a nostalgic journey through cinema.
