The Three Categories of Divine Service

This discussion is an exercise in Heshbon HaNefesh (soul-accounting), focusing on the need to approach our service of God with the same seriousness and focus we dedicate to our most important worldly tasks. The central lesson is that all our actions must be performed with our full heart and attention. The Three Categories of Divine Service The Chovot HaLevavot (Duties of the Heart) divides our service of God into three categories: Solely of the Heart: This includes internal spiritual duties like love and fear of God, faith, and trust. Both Body and Heart: This category includes mitzvot that involve both physical action and spiritual intention, such as prayer and Torah study. Solely of the Body: These are physical acts that require initial intent but not constant focus throughout the action, such as shaking the Lulav or performing the mitzvah of Sukkah . The Heart of the Matter: The Importance of Intention in Prayer The core of our service, especially prayer, is the heart. The prophet Isaiah delivered a powerful rebuke to the people, saying, "This people honors Me with its lips and with its mouth, but its heart is far from Me." Prayer without intention and focus is likened to a body without a soul—it is essentially dead. The Chovot HaLevavot offers a powerful parable: a servant invites a king to his home, but then disappears to gamble while the king waits alone. Similarly, we invite God into a meeting through prayer, but if our heart is not present, we are not truly there. This is why, as we say at the end of our prayers, "May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be acceptable before You." This is a bold request, as we are asking God to accept the thoughts that are often far from holy. To ensure our heart is present, the Chovot HaLevavot advises three mental preparations before we begin to pray: Know to Whom You Speak: Recognize that you are about to address the King of all kings. Understand Your Needs: Be clear on what you want from Him—your life, health, and sustenance. Choose Your Words Carefully: Consider the words you will use to make your requests. The Five Elements of True Prayer The words of our prayer are like the peel of an orange or the body of a person; the essence is the fruit and the soul. While the words are a vital tool, the true purpose is to ignite five fundamental feelings within the heart: Yearning: The soul's desire to connect with God. Humility: Humbly recognizing one's smallness before Him. Awe: Recognizing the greatness of the Creator. Praise: Thanking Him for all His kindness. Reliance: Casting all your burdens upon Him. Our sages created the siddur (prayer book) because they knew our hearts are fickle. The words help us organize and express these concepts. Although technically one can fulfill their obligation with thought alone, our words guide and anchor our thoughts. God has entrusted us with prayer, knowing that only we can truly know the sincerity of our own hearts. To live up to this trust, we must follow the counsel of the great sages, who would spend time before they prayed to clear their minds and prepare their hearts, recognizing that we are about to stand before a King who can read our innermost thoughts.

Every great leader I admire has something they're still working through—something real, unresolved, and unseen by others. Today, I want to take you beyond the polished public image to explore the struggles, questions, and breakthroughs that happen behind closed doors. This episode is about the leadership you rarely get to see—the parts they don't always show. If what you hear today resonates with you, stick around until the end for details on our monthly leadership training designed to help you grow.Guest IntroductionEAT. SLEEP. PARTY. REPEAT. That was the mantra for Paige Chenault Lohoefer—and for good reason. As a former wedding planner with nearly a decade of experience, Paige knew how to throw a celebration to remember. Armed with a coveted black book of party vendors and a knack for creating unforgettable moments, she turned her talent toward a new kind of guest of honor: children experiencing homelessness. In 2012, she founded The Birthday Party Project (TBPP)—a nonprofit that brings JOY through the magic of birthday celebrations. What began as a simple idea has grown into a national movement. Over the last 13 years, TBPP has expanded to 20 cities, celebrated more than 78,000 children, and mobilized nearly 38,000 volunteers—known lovingly as Birthday Enthusiasts. While Paige has transitioned out of the day-to-day leadership at TBPP, she remains its passionate Chief Storyteller and biggest champion. Her heart still beats for community, but these days her focus has shifted to helping others build bold, beautiful organizations from the inside out.Paige is deeply committed to aligning vision with values, purpose with brand, and systems with culture. Whether she's consulting on a campaign, clarifying messaging, or guiding a team through change, Paige is at her best when she's bringing big ideas to life and creating meaningful spaces where people feel seen, known, and celebrated. Her work has been featured by the TODAY Show, New York Times, The World According to Jeff Goldblum, Glamour Magazine, ABC World News Tonight, and more. She delivered a TEDx talk in 2016 and continues to speak on brave leadership, intentional culture, and finding JOY in the everyday.Paige believes that people matter most—and that the right invitation can change everything.Key TakeawaysLeadership is never finished. Even the most successful leaders wrestle with challenges that are still unfolding and roles that keep evolving.Letting go is hard. Stepping away from the day-to-day decision making is often way more difficult than I expected.Responsibility versus accountability: It's crucial to know what you're responsible for, what you're accountable to, and what you're choosing to take on.Ego and security play a huge role. Holding onto control often comes from a need for security, belonging, and relevance.Trusting others takes practice. It's natural to fear what might happen when we delegate, but giving space is how others grow and solve problems.Belonging versus being wanted: Being relevant doesn't always feel like being wanted—but true collaboration needs both.Deep Dive: The Leadership Transition StrugglePaige opened up about how hard it's been to “let go” after bringing in a capable CEO and stepping back from the primary decision-making role. She talked about the heavy feeling of still being responsible for outcomes, even though she's no longer in control. We also discussed the struggle of trusting others' decisions while still wanting those decisions to align with the mission she built. Sometimes, taking on responsibility is a choice—and it can become a burden we don't actually need. The Three Categories of Leadership OwnershipThings I'm responsible for—tasks only I can handle, and if I don't do them, it's detrimental.Things I'm accountable for—even if I'm not involved day to day, the buck stops with me.Things I've willfully chosen to take on, even if they weren't assigned or necessary. The Ego, Security, and Belonging Behind ControlPaige and I talked about the ego tied to leadership—the drive to find solutions and control outcomes that feels like a source of security. The problem-solving that happens too fast can rob the team of space to grow. It's a tension between knowing your stuff and trusting others to contribute fully. And underneath it all is the need to feel relevant, wanted, and like you have a place to belong—that's what keeps us so deeply involved sometimes.Key Quotes“Every great leader I admire, no matter how much success they show, has something they're still working through.”“Stepping out of the decision-maker role has been way harder than I imagined.”“I find myself pausing, conflicted about what's mine to do and what's not.”“Sometimes I don't even allow someone else's voice because I'm terrified it will take too long or the outcome won't be what I want.”“I work really hard to create places where people belong. That's exactly it for me—is there space for me?”“What if I could be relevant and wanted? That would be amazing.”Resources MentionedPaige's website: https://www.thebirthdaypartyproject.org Paige's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebirthdaypartyproject/ Paige's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paige-c-lohoefer-67115287/ Monthly Leadership Training: I run a leadership training program designed to help you deepen your skills and navigate these very real challenges behind the scenes. In this episode you will learn about: The Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered between 1947 in the caves of Qumran near the Dead Sea, are considered the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century. They contain over 900 manuscripts, offering profound insights into Jewish life and scriptural interpretation during the Second Temple period. The scrolls are attributed to a Jewish sect most likely the Essenes who withdrew from Jerusalem in protest against what they saw as a corrupt priesthood. They settled at Qumran, living in purity and waiting for the apocalyptic end of days. The discovery included stone vessels, ritual baths (mikvaot), and a scriptorium, all indicating a monastic, religious lifestyle deeply rooted in Scripture. There are three important historians that wrote about them: Philo of Alexandria, Josephus flavious and Pliny the Elder. Philo of Alexandria mentions that the essenes live in villages, not cities, to avoid moral corruption. They renounce wealth and personal property, living communally, they devote themselves to peace, agriculture, and virtue, rejecting war and slavery. Josephus flavius had the most information about the essenes, they reject pleasures, value virtue, and live communally without private property, they avoid marriage, live simply, and emphasize purity and ritual cleanliness, they follow strict discipline, practice daily prayers, and eat in sacred silence and their souls are believed to be immortal, and they view the body as a temporary prison. While Pliny the elder wrote only about the geographical location in his Natural history book and he says that the Essenes live near the Dead Sea, avoiding cities and women, they have no money, only palm trees and simplicity. Not much in details. Three Categories of Scrolls Biblical Canonical Texts: These are the oldest known Hebrew Bible manuscripts, predating the Masoretic Text our primary Hebrew Bible source by over 1,000 years. Every book of the Hebrew Bible was found—except Esther. Apocryphal and Pseudepigraphal Texts: These include works like 1 Enoch and the Book of Jubilees—books that were influential in early Judaism and Christianity, even if not canonized. Sectarian Texts: Unique to Qumran, these writings detail community life, beliefs, and regulations, including the Community Rule, War Scroll, and Thanksgiving Hymns. They reveal a society organized around purity, hierarchy, and eschatological expectation. For the complete Video online course check our website:  www.twinsbiblicalacademy.com/paid-courses

In the Quran chapter 2 verse 1 to 20, three categories of people are mentioned. The first are the righteous, who believe in the unseen, perform prayers, and give from what God has provided for them. They believe in the Quran and the revelations that came before it, and are certain about the Hereafter. They are guided by their Lord and will be successful. The second category are the disbelievers, who will not believe even if they are warned. God has sealed their hearts and hearing, and they will face a great punishment. They are deceived by their own lies and refuse to believe in the truth. The third category are those who pretend to believe, but their hearts are sick with deception. They try to corrupt the earth and deceive God and believers, but they only deceive themselves. They have chosen misguidance over guidance, and are like those who walk in darkness, unable to see or hear. They fear death and try to avoid it, but God surrounds them with His power.

Welcome to part two of this two part episode with Metic.Today's guest is Metic, a producer who fuses soulful guitar grooves with laid-back hip-hop beats. His playing is rooted in blues and finger-style guitar and his productions are informed by 90s boom-bap, G-funk, and trip-hop. A frequent collaborator, the Brooklyn-based, Hong Kong native continues to draw inspiration from both cities. This is showcased in his album release: Thoughts on Home and Symmetry, which documents his life and travels across his home and hometown. In Part Two of this two-part conversation, we discuss:- Quality versus quantity as it pertains to relationships.- Metic's experience releasing vinyl using crowdfunding through Qrates as well owning the process independently.- The three major categories of work as an artist and how to approach allocating your energy across each one.- Managing expectations in a way that allows you to maintain forward motion.- And, a reminder that you don't have to be good at everything in order to succeed.By the way…If you haven't already, I invite you to listen to Part 1 of this conversation for additional context as some topics re-emerge and develop.Top 3 Gems From This Convo:1. The Craft Is At The Core.Today's artist is expected to take on many responsibilities beyond the making of the art. However, it is important to find a way to be sure you are prioritizing what is at the heart of what you do: make art.2. Learning To Say No.This we know: It isn't possible to do everything. So, when an opportunity arises that is not aligned with your goals, outside of your capacity, or simply uninteresting, it's OK to say no.3. You Don't Have To Be The Best At Everything. As mentioned in Podium #5, “Success Occurs In The Privacy Of The Soul.”Assess your talents and abilities as objectively as possible. Do what you can with what you have. You're lack of knowledge or skill in one area does not necessarily prohibit success.Remember: A skill is not a static quality, but a learned and dynamic ability that changes based on the attention we invest.Listen on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.Tap in with toru:Substack: Instagram: @torubeattiktok: @torubeatTap in with Metic:Instagram: @meticmusicTo jump to a specific moment in the conversation:0:00 Intro 2:22 All Terms Are Negotiable 4:30 Quality v. Transformative Leadership Conversations with Winnie da Silva

“Every once in a while we discover a question that turns out to be particularly powerful in terms of the benefits that come from a team grappling with it. And so the question is this: ‘In order for this team to deliver on our business objectives this year, what is the high value, highly interdependent work that we must do together? ” - Peter AxelsonIn this podcast episode, Winnie and Peter discuss the concept of "Joint Work" as a critical building block for developing effective teams. They emphasize the importance of identifying the shared work that a team must do together, which is distinct from individual or subgroup work. Episode Highlights:Pizza StoryPeter shares the origin story of this concept of Joint Work. When working with a group of managers to help them understand the importance of understanding their shared work as a team, he uses a pizza analogy. He distinguishes between the "crust work" (individual work) and the "points work" (work requiring collaboration across the whole team).Three Categories of WorkWinnie and Peter introduce the three categories of work that effective teams must define: individual work, subgroup work, and joint work. These categories help teams understand the different levels of interdependence in their work and then build the appropriate collaboration mechanisms. Joint Work ContinuumJoint work varies greatly in quantity across teams, forming a continuum. Some teams may have a small portion of joint work (like small points on a pizza), while others have a significant portion (like large points). In general, as the size of a team increases, and as the functional diversity of a team increases, the amount of joint work in the team decreases. Some teams will end up having a small amount of joint work and some teams will end up having a large amount of joint work. Having more joint work is not “better” than having less - what's important is that the team has clearly defined that work which entails a high level of interdependence.Powerful QuestionPeter highlights a powerful question for teams: "In order for this team to deliver on our business objectives, what is the high-value, highly-interdependent work that we must do TOGETHER?" This question encourages teams to reevaluate and redefine their work. Peter notes that across the hundreds of teams with which he has worked, every team has, to some degree, changed how they define the work of their team. Joint Work Discovery ProcessWinnie and Peter describe how they help teams discover their joint work. This process includes a workshop setting where the team reviews their business objectives and defines their joint work. They use seven categories of joint work to help the team think broadly about what their joint work should be. Work Process AlignmentWinnie and Peter stress the importance of aligning work processes with the team's joint work. They explain that team meetings and other processes should be reflective of the type and amount of joint work.Benefits of Defining Joint WorkPeter highlights two key benefits. First, teams that invest in defining their joint work often realize they have been doing the wrong work together. Second, these teams become more focused, experience less tension, have more productive meetings, use time efficiently, and collaborate more effectively. Winnie and Peter acknowledge that defining joint work is, at first, a challenging and messy process, but one that produces huge benefits for teams. They offer their assistance to teams interested in delving deeper into this concept.ResourcesWinnie da Silva on LinkedIn Get the whole season and the companion guide at Winniedasilva.comMining Group Gold by Thomas A. Today's episode is titled Feedback: It's Everywhere…So Why Do We Get it Wrong? Some deep things we cover:Feedback is Life: Understanding feedback helps us grow and connect to each other.First Understand Feedback: Don't take feedback at face value.  Before reacting to feedback, ask questions.  Three Categories of Feedback: Appreciation, Coaching and Evaluation.Cross Transactions: When we are asking for one type of feedback and we get another type it creates conflict and disconnection.Human Intelligence is Organized Around Stories: Computers manage and access data but human intelligence is organized around stories.  Beware: we often think our interpretation of data is the data itself.Feedback is a Two-Way Street: Even if you package it well, it can be received poorly.Phyllis' Jekyll and Hyde Way of Giving Feedback: Phyllis unpacks how she tried to use appreciation to compensate for her hypercritical feedback.Pushing vs. Pulling: Pushing happens from the feedback giver and may not create the change desired in the feedback receiver.  Pulling happens from within the feedback receiver and that is where the real change happens.Honest Mirrors and Supportive Mirrors: We need both types of friends who reflect the truth but also provide us with the support we need to change.Take-aways:Take a Mirror Inventory: List the supportive mirrors and the honest mirrors in your life.  We need both types of people to help us grow.Ask For What You Need: Use the 3 categories of appreciation, coaching and evaluation to ask for what we need when we are wanting feedback.  Delay Judgment and Get Curious: Ask clarifying questions about the feedback you're receiving so you can properly understand the story that the feedback giver is giving you.  We want to have a conversation with you!The whole point of this podcast is to facilitate and encourage deeper conversations and we want to hear from you!  There are many ways to connect with us.  Here are some of them:Join our That's So Deep Community Group on Facebook.LIKE and FOLLOW us on: Facebook: @sodeeppeeps  Instagram @thatssodeeppodText us or leave us a voicemail: 805-288-0884Email us: sodeeppeeps@gmail.comIf you liked this podcast, you can FOLLOW, SUBSCRIBE or SHARE with a friend and if you don't want to miss an episode, click that BELL so you can be notified right away when the next episode releases.  We love you and we can't wait for our next deep conversation!Yours in Becoming, Phyllis & JulieResources and articles we referenced in the episode:Let's Talk: Make Effective Feedback Your Superpower: Huston, ThereseThanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well: Stone, Douglas, Heen, SheilaThe Essentials: Giving Feedback - Women at Work | Podcast on SpotifyDr. Nicole LePera (@the.holistic.psychologist)

Hello So Deep Peeps!  Welcome to That's So Deep.  This is the podcast where we try to root out loneliness one conversation at a time. Today we are talking about Unsolicited Advice: The Thing We Love to Give And Hate to Receive. Some deep things we cover:How do you feel when people give you unsolicited advice?Relationship Triggers: Sometimes you can't take advice simply because of the relationship you have with the person who is giving the advice even if the advice is sound.Three Categories of Feedback: Appreciation, Coaching and Evaluation.Love and Belonging VS. Growth: Sometimes these can be opposing forces inside our hearts and minds. All Advice is Autobiographical: We inevitably give advice to others through the lens of our own lives.  It is unavoidable. We see you New Moms!  People are talking at you all day everyday but we want you to know that you're killing it!Being a Friend to Our Friend's Who are Stuck in a Bad Relationship: We talk about how tricky it is to speak truth, hold space and keep boundaries so we can help catch our friends when they are ready. Take-aways:To the Advice Giver:Remember that all advice is autobiographical.  You are approaching your friends from your lens and your life experiences and attempting to speak into their lives.  Try a more curious approach and try to understand their lens before jumping in. To the Advice Receiver: Before sharing, think about what you need: When you share with a friend, you can sometimes open yourself up for advice even if what you need is just to process your feelings.  Try to figure out what you need before sharing so that you can ask for what you need and your friend can be a better friend to you.Surround yourself with loving and encouraging people: Good friends encourage, support and speak truth.  Find those people and spend as much time as you can with them so that you can become the best you that you can be.***We want to have a conversation with you!The whole point of this podcast is to facilitate and encourage deeper conversations and we want to hear from you!  There are many ways to connect with us.  Here are some of them:Text us or leave us a voicemail: 805-288-0884Email us: sodeeppeeps@gmail.comJoin our That's So Deep Community Group on Facebook.LIKE and FOLLOW us on: Facebook @sodeeppeepsInstagram @thatssodeeppod If you liked this podcast, you can FOLLOW, SUBSCRIBE or SHARE with a friend and if you don't want to miss an episode, click that BELL so you can be notified right away when the next episode releases.  We love you and we can't wait for our next deep conversation!Yours in Becoming, Phyllis & JulieResources and articles we referenced in the episode:Let's Talk: Make Effective Feedback Your Superpower: Huston, ThereseThanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well: Stone, Douglas, Heen, SheilaThe Essentials: Giving Feedback - Women at Work | Podcast on Spotify

Alright y'all. Let's face it: Distractions are a fact of life. You're going to face them in every area of your life and your business, and the honest truth is that if we don't face them, they're going to keep us from getting things done. I want you to reach your goals and achieve everything you want in the coming year. So let's talk about how to stay focused and eliminate distractions. All human beings are wired to be curious. We naturally gravitate toward the new, even if that keeps us from doing the things we need to do. But not all distractions are created equal. Three Categories of Distractions Let's think of distractions in the form of a stop light. STOP.Red Distractions: The distractions that you should ignore. STOP. Proceed with caution.Yellow Distractions: The distractions that cause you to slow down and think about. GO!Green Distractions: The distractions that demand your attention. Red Distractions Squirrels These types of distractions, like a squirrel zooming in front of you on a walk, divert you from your main task at hand. They might be new ideas, shiny objects, something more fun, or simply something that is going to help you procrastinate. For me, this is a normal occurrence. They steal my attention away from what I'm really supposed to be doing. I am working on one idea or objective, something new pops up, and I focus on that instead. It's easy to get derailed by these types of distractions. But honestly, they are just squirrels. These go in the Red Distractions category because they are the types of distractions that you need to stop letting steal your focus. Technology You knew I was going to go here. I can't talk about distractions without calling out the main culprit and source of distraction for so many of us. Technology notifications distract us all day long. It's a text when you're in the middle of a project or a quick browse on Facebook when you really should be writing marketing copy. Most types of technology distractions are examples of those that you can and should ignore. Those notifications come in 24/7, and they're still going to be there when you get done with your task at hand. How Do You Handle Red Distractions? Red Distractions are the easiest distractions to avoid. You shut it out, put on blinders, and force yourself to focus. This is a matter of will and discipline. If you want to get anything done, set yourself up for success. You need to eliminate any possible chance for these distractions to come at you.  Put on noise-canceling headphones, go to a room or coffee shop by yourself, close all the tabs on your computer, hide your phone, and get to work. Force yourself to focus, and you'll finally start finishing. Yellow Distractions There are no hard and fast rules for ignoring these distractions. Proceed with caution, like you would at a stoplight. Stop and think before you let them steal your focus. People Around You You're going to encounter all kinds of people who have the potential to distract you-customers, team members, vendors, friends or family. When you have people in your life distracting you, you must stop and think before allowing them to steal your focus. Do their needs demand your attention, or can you set up a boundary until you have the space and time to address them? Related: How to Say No And Stand Your Ground Kids in Your Home Yes, kids are people, but we all know they present a different level of distraction than the other people in your life. Nothing can derail your plans like your kids. (Can I get an "Amen!"?) Let's be honest. When your kids need you, it's because they need one of two things: They want to play or they need help. Again, think about what is most important in that moment. Are you up against a deadline and you need to tell your kid you'll play with them later? Or are you in a place where you can be present and seize a moment with them? Related: Look For Distractions...
