Final Fantasy 7 has one of the best soundtracks in the history of video games. We analyze it to figure out why that is. We got stories, background information and more about this specific game and we lay it all out right here. This was supposed to include all of the PS1 era final fantasy games but it ended up just being about FF7. There might be a few spoilers here so tread carefully if you haven't yet played the game. We take a look back at some of Uematsu's music, but as we have played an abundance of Final Fantasy themes in the past, and aruably that is what Uematsu is most well-known for, we will instead be focusing on his music outside of that famed RPG series. All tracks Composed by Nobuo Uematsu00:00 - Epsylon Range [Lost Odyssey] 02:19 - Vill 02 [Away: Shuffle Dungeon] 05:37 - Fight, Boy! It's been a while since we've done a dive into media, so—here goes! Friend of the show Charles Siegel joins for Pooka for a discussion of how video games and tabletop games inform and resemble each other. We go through a shortlist of ten titles for inspiration to round out this series of episodes (for now) (the other big one is music, and no way are we getting the rights to do that one). In our opinion, each of these games features a variety of elements that tie into those of Changeling: the Dreaming. Obviously, there are a lot more out there, but a shortlist seems sufficient for our purposes. ALERTA SPOILER! Abstract: The locus coeruleus (LC) is a small region in the pons and the main source of noradrenaline (NA) to the forebrain. While traditional models suggested that all LC-NA neurons project indiscriminately throughout the brain, accumulating evidence indicates that these cells can be heterogeneous based on their anatomical connectivity and behavioral functionality and exhibit distinct coding modes. How LC-NA neuronal subpopulations are endowed with unique functional properties is unclear. Here, we used a viral-genetic approach for mapping anatomical connectivity at different levels of organization based on inputs and outputs of defined cell classes. Specifically, we studied the whole-brain afferent inputs onto two functionally distinct LC-NA neuronal subpopulations which project to amygdala or medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). We found that the global input distribution is similar for both LC-NA neuronal subpopulations. However, finer analysis demonstrated important differences in inputs from specific brain regions. Moreover, sex related differences were apparent, but only in inputs to amygdala-projecting LC-NA neurons. These findings reveal a cell type and sex specific afferent input organization which could allow for context dependent and target specific control of NA outflow to forebrain structures involved in emotional control and decision making. Abstract: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive neuroimaging method beneficial for the identification of normal developmental and aging processes and data sharing. Marmosets have a relatively shorter life expectancy (approximately 10 years) than other primates, including, humans because they grow and age faster. Hence, the common marmoset model is effective in aging research. The current study investigated the aging process of the marmoset brain and provided an open MRI database on marmosets with a wide age range. The Brain/MINDS Marmoset Brain MRI Dataset contains brain MRI information on 216 marmosets aged between 1 and 10 years. During its release date, it is the largest public dataset worldwide. Further, it comprises multi contrast MRI images. In addition, 91 of 216 animals have corresponding ex vivo high-resolution MRI datasets. Our MRI database, which is available at the Brain/MINDS Data portal might help understand the effects of different factors, such as age, sex, body size, and fixation, on the brain. The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe Scotlands most famous resident, the Loch Ness Monster. There's of course a lot of visual evidence of Nessie including THAT photo (the Surgeon's Photograph) but is this evidence honourable and trustworthy? Many believe that the monster is a plesiosaur but is that even possible? This is explored along with other theories. But where did it all begin? Well, this episode covers that too for you see, around 565 CE Saint Columba had what is believed to be the first ever encounter with the Loch Ness monster, at River Ness. Being a saint, would the power of the cross protect Columba? If not a plesiosaur, could Nessie be a buff eel, or a buff otter? What about a Tully Monster and speaking of Tullies, did the historic residents of Atlantis used to ride Tully Monsters? Could dolphins and Nessie be working together using crystals (calling back to a previous episode on dolphins)? Marine biologists will probably be disgusted by what they hear in this episode but sometimes, you've just got to open your mind. On the note of opening your mind, what if Pokemon were real and do Magikarp utilise performance enhancing drugs? If you really, really open your mind, just wait until you get a load of what History's Ancient Aliens think about the origins of the Loch Ness monster… But could these ideas, linked to electromagnetic energies in deep bodies of water, explain the frequency of alien sightings around watery bodies? The original soundtrack was composed by Nobuo Uematsu and produced by Uematsu along with Minoru Akao. Alongside that, you may have noticed the wonderful Dire, Dire Docks theme from Super Mario 64 courtesy of Nintendo and composed by legendary Koji Kondo. You know by now that we love to stick in special memories from our childhood and this one is particularly beautiful. On the note of beautiful, as we discussed Zora (again), there was a segment including the Zora's Domain theme from Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (originally composed by Kōji Kondō). Video Game music has often struggled to find its way to the mainstream, often being considered niche. However, the work of famous video game composers like Nobuo Uematsu has brought it to new levels, with hits from video games like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and more. Matt and Johnny look at the life of Uematsu on this week's episode and close out their newest month of music themed episodes.

The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe Alexander Hamilton. No, not that one. This one, you haven't heard of because this is a probe we have not done. Well, we have because you're reading the show notes for it, but we hadn't. Alexander Hamilton, his name was Alexander Hamilton, an honourable and trustworthy pillar of the Leroyyyyyyyyyy community in 1897. But the question is, when Hamilton's cow was taken, would Hamilton throw away his shot? Or do we mean axe? This case has some of our favourite UFO features - a craft, cow abduction… Well, that's it really. Oh and a bloody good alternative hypothesis. We love these olden times cases. Were locals experimenting on cows with… Gas… Urm… Nope. I refuse to put that theory down in writing. A more credible thought - do cows know karate? Hamilton was so honourable that he was vouched for by a dozen further honourable and trustworthy citizens, but were they in the field where it happened? If you want to know what happened, you better be willing to wait for it. All that and more on this week's file and we hope that you'll be back after what we did at the end here…     Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/butitwasaliens   Store: https://butitwasaliens.co.uk/shop/     Probe us: Email: butitwasaliens@gmail.com Instagram @ ButItWasAliensPodcast Twitter @ ButItWasAliens Facebook: @ ButItWasAliens - join Extraterrestrial Towers   Remember, bathing in semi-skimmed milk once per fortnight will keep you looking youthful.   Music:  Music created via Garageband. Additional music via: https://freepd.com - thank you most kindly good people. When discussing Lon Lon Ranch, you may have noticed the Lon Lon Ranch theme from 1998's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, composed by Kōji Kondō. This game was and remains wonderful. Towards the end in exploring the ‘club' theory, you may have noticed Lurking In The Darkness from the Final Fantasy 7 original soundtrack. This was composed by Nobuo Uematsu and produced by Uematsu and Minoru Akao. The Final Fantasy 7 soundtrack was released on 10/02/1997 and later re-released directly by Square Enix on 10/05/2004. A special thank you, the most special thank you for this episode in fact, must go to Lin-Manuel Miranda as well as the Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton (via Atlantic Records) for both their music and the inspiration for massive chunks of this episode (especially that closing number). Thank you. If by some peculiar series of events any of those involved in the production of Hamilton ever stumble across this podcast episode, we sincerely hope that you enjoyed our take and were not offended in any way, shape or form by this alien parody because we love Hamilton.

The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe the allegedly truthful space battle in the skies above Nuremberg, Germany in 1561. But before that, we learn the REAL words to Prince's classic, Purple Rain, along with the dangerous and horrid Purple Rain drinking game. Don't do it, folks. Anyway…  We begin the actual case today with a bang. Well, more of a pop (and we're not talking about Moonwalkers balls). Because we have some visual evidence. Evidence of a possible war above Earth which definitely couldn't have been between Earthlings. So was this an alien battle? Or was it actually a warning from God? A demonstration of God's wrath should their people not be honourable and trustworthy. Or were more natural forces at play? Meanwhile, tune in and you can learn all about the allegedly truthful 1500's German farm, Farm Farm. Finally, a question… Are Greybeard and Moonwalker honourable and trustworthy enough to wield Excalibur or the Master Sword? All that and more on this week's file.     Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/butitwasaliens   Store: https://butitwasaliens.co.uk/shop/     Probe us: Email: butitwasaliens@gmail.com Instagram @ ButItWasAliensPodcast Twitter @ ButItWasAliens Facebook: @ ButItWasAliens - join Extraterrestrial Towers     Music:  Music created via Garageband. Additional music via: https://freepd.com - thank you most kindly good people. Of course, when mentioning Lon Lon Ranch we had to sneak in the Lon Lon Ranch theme from from 1998's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, composed by Kōji Kondō. Later on, we also attached some Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past music also by Kōji Kondō - the Lost Woods, Master Sword and Hyrule Overworld themes. This accompanied our discussion of pulling the Master Sword, or Excalibur, from its resting place. What a moment. Before that however, because it just felt right, we opened today's case with a clip of the Prelude theme from the wondrous Fantasy 7 original soundtrack, composed by Nobuo Uematsu and produced by Uematsu alongside Minoru Akao. During Moonwalker's button-popping strip, we utilised a very quick snippet from The Stripper instrumental by David Rose, recorded originally in 1958 and courtesy of label MGM. We obviously don't own the rights to this and used a quick clip as part of a self-satirical section, please don't send your agents for us.

Show Notes: http://videogamegrooves.com/2022/01/31/episode-91-final-fantasy-viii-battletoads-smash-hits/ We're back for 2022, perhaps a little bit sleepy, but hibernation can do that to you. Jeremy, Anthony, and Caleb are kicking off the new year with a giant spiked boot and a cool Squall Leonhart necklace. (Yeah, we know.) We are ready to return to the days of slow MIDI beats to study to with Final Fantasy VIII from Square Enix, extracting a few thematic elements from the generally well-liked Uematsu score, and putting them on the turntable for all to see. Redbook audio? Who needs it?? And who in the Final Fantasy universe is the Vin Diesel analog from The Fast and the Furious? We move it along to a much earlier (and also much later) era with Battletoads: Smash Hits from iam8bit. We discuss a bit of the origins of the franchise with David Wise's not-actually-heavy-metal leanings in the 80s, and run through the weird and warty history up to Battletoads (2020). David Housden expertly weaves many metal threads together into a simultaneously self-aware but genuinely great metal album... along with some calliope music. We look at the new releases that have come out or been announced in January, and the list is not too bad and generally pretty encouraging! We also put down some predictions for 2022, including production and industry matters, the kinds of releases we expect to see, and we toss a few out-loud wishes into the podcasting ether to see what comes back to us. Outro: "Balamb Garden" - Nobuo Uematsu, Final Fantasy VIII Twitter – @vg_grooves, @jeremy_lamont, @ch3records Caleb's other prediction is that game music vinyl labels will be releasing a lot of other kinds of "merch" this year.
