Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this 'hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 15 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Lizbeth Alvarez, Corporate Communications Manager at Warner Music Group, starts us off today when she sits down to speak with Madeline White. Lizbeth traces her career path from broadcast journalism student to PR professional, crediting a pivotal narrative writing class with sparking her love of storytelling and brand communication, and reflecting on the mentors who shaped her along the way. Lizbeth opens up about the fast-paced, ever-changing environment of working in entertainment and one of her proudest professional moments: helping emerging country music songwriters gain the recognition they deserve. Looking ahead, she predicts that nostalgia, authenticity, and technology will drive the next wave of audience engagement, and she closes with advice for aspiring PR professionals that says it all: market yourself the same way you have practiced marketing others. Mia Reyes helps to conclude our episode via her conversation with Sophie Roth. Sophie, who is an Assistant to the Chairman and CEO at a major global sports, music, and entertainment marketing and talent agency shares the projects that have excited her most. She and Mia discuss the skills that define success in the role, and Sophie also speaks directly to students who feel lost in their post-grad search, reminding them that everyone's timeline looks different and that her own path involved a healthy dose of luck.

Making a Scene Presents - The Suno-Warner Deal: When Big Music Stops Fighting AI and Starts Designing It Something important just happened in the music business, and indie artists need to pay attention. Warner Music Group and Suno announced a partnership built around licensed AI music. Under the deal, the companies will work on next-generation licensed models, Warner artists can opt in to AI experiences using their names, images, likenesses, voices, and compositions, and Suno will make major product changes in 2026, including phasing out its current models, requiring paid accounts for downloads, limiting downloads on paid tiers, and keeping unlimited downloads inside Suno Studio. As part of the same broader agreement, Suno also acquired Songkick from Warner. That sounds like a product story. It sounds like a legal story. It sounds like one more AI headline in a year full of AI headlines. But for independent artists, it is really a power story. The Suno-Warner deal is one of the clearest signs yet that major music companies are moving from trying to fight generative AI from the outside to trying to shape it from the inside. Warner itself said the partnership is meant to forge a “blueprint for a next-generation licensed AI music platform.” Reuters also reported that Warner settled its infringement case with Suno so the company could move toward licensed models. http://www.makingascene.org

Títulos incluidos: X-Men: The Arcade Game (hasta 6 jugadores con rollback netcode), Captain America and the Avengers, Maximum Carnage, Separation Anxiety, Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin y Silver Surfer. ChatGPT is facing scrutiny ("under the gun") following recent developments, though the episode notes indicate a general lack of excitement over Thanksgiving updates like Kling 01 and Runway gen 4.5.The future of coding is seen as mostly AI-driven, with a mention of Mark Zuckerberg's prediction that all coding will be done by AI within 18 months.Major business developments include a partnership between Suno and Warner Music Group, and the expected roll-out of ads in ChatGPT responses by OpenAI.The financial relationship between OpenAI and Nvidia remains undefined, with the Nvidia CFO noting no definitive agreement, supporting the podcast's long-held view that many agreements are non-concrete and OpenAI's profits may be lower than perceived.A strong debate exists regarding the monetization and competition in the AI space, with arguments suggesting that Google's strategy with Gemini (potentially running ad-free and leveraging its search monetization) could force competitors to operate at a loss until they bleed out, giving Google a nearly unfair market advantage.@maxescu@slow_developer@Ross__Hendricks@signulll

The Making of PSYCHOCANDY by The Jesus and Mary Chain - featuring Jim Reid and William Reid

Life of the Record

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 14, 2025 105:05

For the 40th anniversary of The Jesus and Mary Chain's landmark debut album, Psychocandy, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Growing up in East Kilbride, Scotland, brothers William and Jim Reid had their lives changed by punk and both made plans to start their own bands. When they had trouble finding like-minded musicians in their town, they realized they could pool their resources and start a band together. After their father was made redundant from his job at a factory, he gave them a gift of 300 pounds, which they used to buy a Portastudio 4-track machine. Recording the songs they were writing allowed them to find the sound of the band that they were looking for. By 1984, they had recruited Douglas Hart on bass and Murray Dalglish on drums and were sending around a demo tape to try and get gigs. Their tape was passed on to Bobby Gillespie, who loved it and connected them with Alan McGee of Creation Records. After seeing them live, McGee signed them to a deal and they released their first single, “Upside Down,” in 1984. The single, along with their notorious live performances, generated a lot of interest and they ended up signing a deal with a subsidiary of Warner Music Group, called Blanco y Negro. At this point, Bobby Gillespie replaced Murray Dalglish on drums and they released their follow-up single, “Never Understand,” in early 1985. Their full-length debut album, Psychocandy, was eventually released in late 1985.  In this episode, Jim Reid describes the impetus for starting a band with his brother William and how they would spend hours talking about music and envisioning the type of band that could start a cultural revolution. He describes how they were of a shared mind in those early days and how they would each write songs and flipped a coin to ultimately decide that Jim would become the lead singer. William Reid talks about his punk-inspired approach to guitar and how a chance purchase of a used Shin-ei fuzz pedal from a neighbor kid gave him the sound he was looking for. By blending feedback and noise with 60s-inspired pop, the Reid brothers found their unique sound and went to great lengths to protect it from being watered down by the record company. From being emboldened to experiment by engineer John Loder, to the chaos of their early live gigs, to the standup drumming style of Bobby Gillespie, to swapping shifts in the studio with Ministry, to creating an album where every song could be a single, to punk music as the missing ingredient in their lives, to their shared confidence in making a record that would stand the test of time, we'll hear the stories of how the album came together.

Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with JulieAnn Bornales, Creative Operations & Marketing Consultant, and Podcast Producer. She highlights the lessons learned from career setbacks, finding your voice in challenging environments, and the importance of asking for what you're worth.   In today's episode, we discuss: Don't overlook the power of self-belief when facing challenges or workplace uncertainty. Trusting in your ability to solve problems encourages you to keep going through setbacks, helping you recover faster and reach your goals. Know your worth and stand firm in negotiating it, even if it feels uncomfortable initially. Advocating for yourself early in your career can lead to better pay and opportunities later, so get used to asking for more, even if you're eager just to get your foot in the door. Be bold and reach out to people or platforms outside your comfort zone. Sometimes the simplest act of curiosity, like sending an email or asking a question, can lead to big opportunities, so never underestimate the power of taking that next small step. Explore passions and hobbies outside your job to boost creativity and emotional resilience. Participating in activities you enjoy, like baking or theater, can decrease stress and help you bring fresh energy and new ideas back to your main pursuits.   RESOURCES: Master's Thesis  Imagery implications of MTV : teen pop, adolescent girls, and sex role behaviors: https://scholarworks.sjsu.edu/etd_theses/3364/   Guest Bio A native of Northern California, JulieAnn received a double undergraduate degree in Sociology - Organizational Studies and Communications from the University of California at Davis and earned her Master's Degree in Mass Communications, writing her thesis on MTV, music videos, and gender identity at San Jose State University.  A music industry veteran of over 15 years, she spent the majority of her career at Warner Music Group, contributing across sales, marketing, digital strategy, and creative development—driving cross-functional initiatives that supported both artist growth and brand innovation.  She was a key contributor to the launch of Warner Music Group's first FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) channels, helping to program the company's expansion into this rapidly growing digital media space.  She also played a central role in unifying podcasting initiatives across international markets and served as producer of the award-winning, Chartable-ranked series Totally 80's: The Podcast.  A proud alumnus of the Atlantic Theater Acting School in New York City, JulieAnn has also appeared in Off-Broadway productions, web-series and short films. Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming field service operations across skilled trades, and HVAC is no exception. AI in HVAC is reshaping how technicians access information, troubleshoot systems, and stay productive on the job. As the industry faces an ongoing labor shortage and rising equipment complexity, the need for smarter tools is urgent, especially as HVAC employment is projected to grow 9% through 2033, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many experienced technicians are nearing retirement, leaving fewer experts to mentor the next generation and increasing the demand for AI-driven training support. How can AI reduce friction for techs in the field, deliver real-time support, and preserve decades of tribal knowledge before it disappears? In this episode of Straight Outta Crumpton, host Greg Crumpton welcomes Jerry Zhang, Co-founder of Keycard, to explore how AI in HVAC can streamline information access and help HVAC teams get smarter, faster, and more connected. In this conversation, Greg and Jerry discuss:How AI can turn product manuals into real-time, voice-activated troubleshooting guides. Why high-stakes technical work demands AI that cites exact sources—no hallucinations allowed. How data from past service tickets can drive future training, routing, and performance insights.Jerry Zhang is Co-founder of Keycard, an AI platform that transforms equipment documentation into searchable, technician-ready resources. Before launching Keycard, Jerry co-founded an AI company that predicted breakout music artists, which was later acquired by Warner Music Group. He served as SVP of A&R Platforms there before entering the HVAC space. He holds a degree in engineering and brings over a decade of AI innovation experience across industries.

Cassie Petrey is the woman behind some of the most iconic artists' social media marketing including Backstreet Boys, Camila Cabello and Britney Spears. She is the co-founder of Crowd Surf, a leading marketing and music management firm. She's a fan girl whose admiration for the Backstreet Boys led her at age 12 to create a newsletter that reached fans worldwide — then years later she helped seal the band's decades-long superstardom by re-introducing them to next-generation fans. Cassie is a social media and artist management Hollywood powerhouse. She and her co-founder of Crowd Surf, Jade Driver, have been named to power lists in Variety, Billboard, and Forbes' annual “30 Under 30” feature. In 2022, the company launched its non-profit Career Development Program — a first-of-its-kind, no-cost educational series for people aspiring to work in the music business. “I worked fulltime the whole time I was at Middle Tennessee State University studying Music Business. I had been fortunate enough to get a job as a college rep at Warner Music Group my freshman year. I was doing that when, a couple months into college, I discovered a website called MySpace. I went to my boss and said, ‘Hey, why don't big bands use MySpace? You only see small, local and college bands using it. I think major label artists should use it, too.' And she said, ‘I don't really know what that means, but pick an artist. I'll connect you with their manager, and we'll figure out how you can manage their MySpace page.' “I was scared to ask her if I could do that or not, but I'm really glad I did because if I didn't, I wouldn't have been one of the first to market in this lane that has become so huge. I thought social media was going to be big, but I didn't think it was going to get to where it is now! “Looking back on it, it didn't seem such a big deal to me at the time, but a record label vice president, letting an 18-year-old come in and do all this work for their clients on MySpace and more? That's taking a certain level of risk, and I appreciate her taking that risk on me.”
