I met Jervie Windham a few years ago at an exponential event and was immediately impressed. Here's a guy who started three churches while he was a career military officer: one in Korea and two in the United States. So, he was a seasoned man with big ideas about planting a conventional church. We talked about what we were beginning to call micro church at the time. To date, he's planted a hub church with micro churches all around his community of Texas City, Texas. They utilize unique locations in the city and in rural areas beyond it. A large group meets on Sunday morning, but there are far more people meeting in the small spaces. In this podcast, he describes churches in barber shops. He started one microchurch in a barber college, got involved in counseling the young students there, and was invited to set up microchurches in three barber colleges and a beauty school. Now, those who graduated are starting little churches in their barber shops. They're doing evangelism and they're discipling their members. As this caught on, they've got a crazy thing going on at a deer rescue ranch that will surprise you as he talks about it. He goes on further and talks about personal problems and the pains that go on in ministry. He details the struggle in his own household when raising one of his kids was really, really tough. However, that story ends nicely. His “problem child” just graduated from medical school as a young doctor bent on using his medical practice as a way of bringing the Gospel to people. This is an exciting, encouraging and encouraging podcast. If you're discouraged, this is for you. If you're encouraged and up, you'll be excited and encouraged that much further. You can connect with Jervie at Resonate Church or jervie.windom@gmail.com. Hosted on Acast. The demands of life as a ministry wife can leave our hearts open to dangerous traps that bruise our spirits and discourage us in ministry. Today, Paige Wieser shares her experiences as a church planting wife and offers ways she's learned to avoid these traps. EPISODE GUIDE Trap #1: Ministry is a taking endeavor; it's taking everything from me. Trap #2: This is my husband's “thing.” Trap #3: Hard seasons never end. This painful time will always be this way. BEST QUOTES “Satan wants to plant a root of bitterness that says, ‘Oh this is taking so much from me emotionally, timewise, and spiritually.' But we should not be surprised or caught off guard, because church planting is actually a giving endeavor. When you start seeing it as a taking endeavor, there’s a lot of pitfalls and traps that come from that.” — Paige Wieser “Can’t we sometimes be dramatic, us girls? ‘This will always be like this, I’m never going to see the end of it.’ There will be hard. Pain comes with purpose and there will be hard moments, but they won’t last forever. There is joy in the morning, and sometimes the morning comes a lot later than you want it to, at least in my heart and how I feel. Someone asked me once, ‘Remember that year that was hard, does it still hurt as much?’ and I was like, ‘No.’ That was an encouragement. What’s hard right now isn't going to hurt as much in the future. The seasons do change.” — Paige Wieser “I think unmet expectations feel like they could be a trap in any part of life maybe, but they lead to comparison. Realize it’s not going to look exactly like you thought it would in every single detail, and that’s okay.” — Paige Wieser LINKS FROM THE SHOW Check out Resonate Church to learn more about winning college students for Christ. On November 11, 2011, Davey and Amanda Blackburn loaded up a moving truck and drove from Greenville, South Carolina to Indianapolis, Indiana to start Resonate Church, a place they hoped would bring new life to a city and reach people who didn't know God. They were doing all the right things, for the right reasons. They had no idea what was going to happen.Almost four years later on November 10, 2015, the unspeakable happened. Davey came home from the gym to find that his wife, who was pregnant, had been shot three times during a burglary gone wrong in their home. Thankfully, their fifteen-month-old son was left unharmed in his bedroom just down the hall, but Amanda passed away twenty-four hours later. The story hit the headlines across the country, and the months following Amanda's death brought Davey to the lowest level in his life. Nothing Is Wasted is the deeply moving story of Davey's journey of despair and hardship, hope and healing, and how he has discovered firsthand that God has a bigger purpose in our pain. It is through this tragedy and Davey's brokenness, forgiveness, and willingness to share his story that God's presence and healing power allow triumph, victory, and forgiveness to have the last word.Find out more at daveyblackburn.com

In this week's episode Host Brian Frye (Twitter: @brifrye) speaks with Jacob Dahl about this season of Wilderness, what it exposes in each of us, and how we can press into calling in this time. In their discussion they discuss calling, and Jacob shares how his calling came out of crisis and failure. This week's discussion touches on some of the cultural coping trends that have surfaced from social-distancing and quarantining. These include pornography use trends, marijuana sales and gun sales. What does crisis reveal about our calling? What does crisis reveal about our coping? What do we do if we have been coping poorly? Jacob Dahl (Twitter: @jacobdahl) is the Resonate Church site pastor in Ellensburg Washington, home to Central Washington University. He and his wife Jessica were sent out as the first 21x21 church planting site, and have been living and serving in Ellensburg since 2014.
