Officials in Blue Earth County say the Rapidan Dam on the Blue Earth River upstream from Mankato remains under threat of failure. But they also report the water flow around the structure is down slightly from yesterday. Highway 60 through Windom is among many southern Minnesota highways closed due to flooding. It's been about six months since the HyLife pork processing plant in Windom closed its doors. Now many of its former workers are hanging their hopes and futures on the plant reopening this spring. And Minnesota U.S. Rep. I met Jervie Windham a few years ago at an exponential event and was immediately impressed. Here's a guy who started three churches while he was a career military officer: one in Korea and two in the United States. So, he was a seasoned man with big ideas about planting a conventional church. We talked about what we were beginning to call micro church at the time. To date, he's planted a hub church with micro churches all around his community of Texas City, Texas. They utilize unique locations in the city and in rural areas beyond it. A large group meets on Sunday morning, but there are far more people meeting in the small spaces. In this podcast, he describes churches in barber shops. He started one microchurch in a barber college, got involved in counseling the young students there, and was invited to set up microchurches in three barber colleges and a beauty school. Now, those who graduated are starting little churches in their barber shops. They're doing evangelism and they're discipling their members. As this caught on, they've got a crazy thing going on at a deer rescue ranch that will surprise you as he talks about it. He goes on further and talks about personal problems and the pains that go on in ministry. He details the struggle in his own household when raising one of his kids was really, really tough. The job market in Minnesota may be strong, but that doesn't mean everyone's job is secure. Allina Health just announced it would lay off 350 workers, 3M is laying off 1,100 people at its Maplewood, Minn. headquarters and Wells Fargo is eliminating more than 350 jobs across the country in its home mortgage division, including several dozen in Minnesota. Earlier this summer, HyLife pork processing plant in Windom, Minn. closed entirely, putting more than 1,000 people out of work. Minnesota is putting millions into new full service community school initiative, and Windom awaits the fate of a major business development as pork plant sale closes. This is an evening update from MPR News, hosted by Tim Nelson. Music by Gary Meister.

Hundreds of workers in Windom, Minnesota are out of a job starting Friday. We talk with two people who are trying to help them figure out what to do. And we talk with Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara after more than six months on the job. It has been over a decade since lesbian, gay, and bisexual people were barred from the military. A Minnesota LGBTQ+ magazine has since created a new relationship with the National Guard. Across Minnesota and the nation, new and more diverse independent bookstores have been popping up – find out what's behind their success. More than a thousand workers at the Windom, Minn. hog slaughtering plant, Hylife, face their last day of work Friday. That's at least partially a result of the hog industry taking a downturn this year. In early April, Manitoba-based HyLife announced plans to close the Windom plant if they could not find a buyer and soon after that, they filed for bankruptcy. Closing the plant will have big reverberations in the area. Workers who came to this country for those jobs will have to find a new one quickly, or leave the U.S. Read more HyLife H-2B employees face unknown future MPR News Host Cathy Wurzer talked with two people who are helping workers affected by the Windom Hylife plant layoffs. Gabby Nelson has facilitated the aid response to the Hylife layoffs through the Windom Cultural Integration Collaborative, a group formed to welcome the hundreds of Hylife workers on temporary H2B visas that came to Windom. Maria Guerrero is a community health worker with Wellshare International in Mankato. She has worked to find solutions for the hundreds of laid-off Hylife workers who live in hotels in the Mankato area. The majority of those workers arrived from the Mexico border.
