Richard McLaren on match-fixing and gambling in sport

If Richard McLaren hasn't seen it all, he's come awfully darn close. The long-time Canadian lawyer has emerged as a global leader in the fight against the use of performance-enhancing drugs, match-fixing and other forms of corruption in sport. On the eve of next week's Symposium on Competition Manipulation and Gambling in Sport in Toronto – which will be co-hosted by McLaren Global Sport Solutions and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport – McLaren spoke with Gaming News Canada from his office at McKenzie Lake Lawyers LLP in London. McLaren, whose career in sport law started as an arbitrator for the NHL and the NHL Players' Association in the early 1990s, has been a long-standing member of the International Court of Arbitration for Sport, has been involved with five Olympic Games and more recently has been involved in anti-corruption programs for the International Tennis Integrity Agency (which this week banned a chair umpire for manipulating scores for betting purposes), the international basketball federation (FIBA) and the International Boxing Association. We asked McLaren about his journey, and more specifically about his role in unveiling match-fixing activity and educating athletes about gambling in sport. He also weighs in on the impact of regulated sports betting, more recently in Canada and the U.S., and the responsibility of all stakeholders to protect athletes, coaches, officials and other participants in sport. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleagues Chris Baldwin of the WAAR Room (https://waarsports.com) and Malissa Smith of Girlboxing (https://girlboxing.org) on the WAAR Room. A video of this discussion has also been posted on the WAAR Sports YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMW16qQlnyWR-xyd2jZF1IA).We spoke with them Sunday, December 12.This past week saw major developments in the attempt by the Olympic boxing federation -- formerly AIBA and now renamed as the International Boxing Association (IBA) -- to regain its place on the Olympic program. On December 9, IOC president Thomas Bach said in a press conference that AIBA, along with the International Weightlifting Federation, were the IOC's "problem children". AIBA would remain suspended from the IOC until at least 2023, and needs to correct ongoing problems in governance, financial transparency and sustainability, and the integrity of their refereeing and judging processes. Boxing also was not included on the list of sports set for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, although it was not ruled out that it could be added back if AIBA demonstrated that it had corrected these problems to the IOC's satisfaction. On December 10, another report was released about corruption in AIBA by the team led by Professor Richard McLaren. This report, issued at AIBA's behest, concluded that the corruption in the officiating at AIBA events did not end with the 2016 Rio Olympics, but has continued through this year. The report noted that "the people are the problem, even when the rules and regulations are of the highest quality. The sport will need to ensure that it cultivates individuals with integrity to run the organisation." It did also praise the efforts of current AIBA president Umar Kremlev and his associates to end this corruption, stating, "a genuine attempt at reform and progress has been made under Kremlev's leadership." McLaren then discussed this report on an international online press conference. On December 12, before we were able to discuss it, AIBA held its "Extraordinary Congress" and adopted all the extensive reforms which had been proposed by the Governance Reform Group, which was led by Professor Ulrich Haas. These reforms included the establishment of an independent Boxing Integrity Unit. AIBA also officially changed its name to IBA at this congress. And on December 13, IBA president Umar Kremlev also held an international online press conference. We will discuss these developments on our upcoming shows.Besides the crisis in Olympic boxing, we discussed the debut show of the new Probellum promotion, which took place December 11 in Dubai in the UAE. This show was plagued by numerous major governance problems, and we discussed the significance of these and the lack of proper regulation. Also on December 11, there were several major boxing cards around the world. We mainly focused on the Matchroom/DAZN card in Liverpool in the U.K., and in particular on the successful defense of her lightweight belts by Katie Taylor against Firuza Sharipova. Taylor clearly won a decision, but this fight was closer than many had anticipated. We discussed what this means, what is next for Taylor, and the latest news in women's boxing. All this is part of our in-depth coverage of the corrupt world of boxing and sports governance in general.(Photo of Prof. McLaren from screenshot of press conference. The ALL ME® Podcast University of Waterloo Doping Scandal – Bob Copeland We have all faced tough decisions in our life. In this episode, we interview Bob Copeland who dealt with one of the largest doping scandals in Canadian University Sport, and faced a tough decision because of that. Before Bob's current position at McLaren Global Sports Solution, Bob was the Athletic Director at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. While at Waterloo, he found widespread usage of Anabolic Steroids and other Appearance and Performance Enhancing Substances in his football program. After the investigation, Bob and his team decided to suspend the program for a full year. In this episode Bob tells us his story about what he found, the investigation of what happened, the process behind the decision, the backlash that he received, and ultimately the positive outcomes that happened as a result. When all of this happened we worked with Bob to provide education to his students at Waterloo, and he was also a driving force for us to share this message across many other universities in Canada.  We also talk with Bob about his position at McLaren Global Sports Solution. Richard McLaren (the co-founder and CEO of McLaren Global Sports Solution) is a well-known name in the anti-doping space as he was an integral part of the Mitchell Report in Major League Baseball and the McLaren Report on the state-sponsored Olympic Russian doping scandal. They now work together on a variety of issues centering on integrity in sport. Bob has always fought for what is right in sport and is a great partner to the Taylor Foundation. He currently sits on our Board of Directors and was the recipient of Taylor's Award given to those who make an impact in the world of Appearance and Performance Enhancing Substances. LIFE, LIBERTY & THE PURSUIT OF PLEASURE

Russia is banned from the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. Russia made history in the 2018 Olympic Games without even winning a medal. They are the first country to be banned from the 2018 Olympics. The IOC decided after confirming that Russian athletes were accused of doping their urine sample tests. These accusation were build on a damning over-the-top 100-page report by the Richard McLaren, where he revealed the extent of the state-sponsored doping chain in Russia after months of investigations. Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader lauded in the West, called the decision “outrageous". Problem is...Cheating is not a new scandal for the Russian Athletes, seems there is a long history of inappropriate behavior and cheating. Because DOPING in Russian sports has a systemic nature. This country has had more than 49 Olympic medals stripped from its athletes because of doping violations. The president of the International Biathlon Union, Anders Besseberg, said, "We are facing systematic doping on a large scale in one of the strongest teams of the world. Was the IOC too harsh? The fact that no athlete can compete under the Russian flag, no anthem can be played, no Russian outfits, not even Russian vodka would be hip in these games! Does this further isolate Russia from the world community? Is politics in play here? What kind of proof do they have? Co-host Susan Price takes a strong position on this one, so much that Co-hosts Yvette Taylor and Taz Thornton backed her up completely. They smell a rat - and it's not Malcolm this time!
