This week's Beyond The Game episode is dedicated to one man, who ran seven marathons on seven continents in seven days. Ahmet Uysal is the first Turkish man to take part in the World Marathon Challenge - and he did it all for a children's charity.
The list of world cup winners in cricket is limited to just six countries. But the game's governing body, the International Cricket Council, wants that to change. The T20 World Cup is set to expand from 16 teams to 20 starting in 2024 and Turkiye want inon the action. They played their first ever qualifiers for that tournament in Finland in July. Türkiye's oldest horse race, the Gazi Derby, took place in Istanbul on Sunday. Twenty-two thoroughbred horses and their jockeys competed for one of the country's most coveted pieces of silverware. On December 8th, the fight against racism in football made a monumental turn. The Champions League match between Paris Saint-Germain was suspended after Sebastian Coltescu – the game’s fourth official – was accused of racism after he advised the head referee to give Basaksehir assistant coach Pierre Webo a red card for his behaviour on the sidelines. However, the Romanian used the words ‘the Black one’ when explaining who should be sent off. Both teams walked off the field in protest, setting an example for the rest of football. Similar to Colin Kaepernick, retired free safety Husain Abdullah had an unconventional NFL career. After four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Husain and his brother Hamza walked away from their pro football careers in 2012, to take a spiritual journey to Mecca. Upon returning the following year, Husain Abdullah was named captain in his first season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He retired in 2016 at the age of 30, after suffering his fifth concussion.
Many athletes are using their platform to call for racial justice, in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd. But for NBA player Thabo Sefolosha, the video brought back some painful memories.
