In this episode of the AIGA Design Podcast, Lee-Sean Huang and Giulia Donatello speak with Ivan Boscariol, Senior Innovation Specialist and public service designer at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Ivan shares his journey from a background in international relations to working at the intersection of design, innovation, and public service in Latin America. The conversation explores what it means to be a designer within a large public institution, and how to navigate the cultural and bureaucratic complexities that come with the territory. Ivan reflects on the importance of intentionality in design, the need to adapt innovation processes to local contexts, and why trust and collaboration are essential to driving change. He also unpacks the multiple meanings of design practice—as a verb and as a noun—and how those interpretations shift across cultures. Offering a fresh perspective, Ivan highlights the often-overlooked upsides of bureaucracy, and how structure can actually support innovation within large, complex organizations like the IDB.From the challenges of scaling solutions to the power of relationship-building, this episode offers valuable insights into designing for impact within systems that are often slow to change—but full of potential. What if we viewed bureaucracy not as a barrier, but as a material we can design with?Ivan's LinkedInDocumentary: Horizon Zero DawnBook: Good Strategy, Bad Strategy by Richard P. In the latest episode of their podcast, Kyle Racki and Matt Symes discuss the book "The Crux: How Leaders Excel by Finding the One Thing That Matters" by Richard P. Rumelt. The book explores the importance of identifying the central challenge facing a business or organization and developing a strategy to overcome it. Rumelt argues that many organizations fail to identify their core challenge, instead relying on vague and generic strategies that do not address the unique problems facing the company. By identifying the crux, or central challenge, leaders can develop a clear and focused strategy that is more likely to succeed.

Okay, take a guess... Which services are probably the most challenging to design? I argue that it's the services that your users don't explicitly ask for. Wait, what?! Who designs services that their users don't ask for? Well, your government does. A lot. Think of public services like collecting taxes, keeping your street clean, and providing quality education, and helping to alleviate poverty. These are often the "forgotten" services that are so important in order to maintain the wellbeing of our cities and countries. It's one thing to make sure these services are available, but a completely different challenge to improve the experiences of these forgotten services. Our guest, Sally Halls, has taken on this challenge and is using service design to bridge the gap between citizens and policy-makers. In this episode, we'll explore how to design services that people haven't explicitly asked for, how to bring the public's voice into policy-making, and the impact service design professionals can have on the public sector. Sally also shares her experience with service design and how it can be used to benefit the public sector. The insights from this episode can be used in any sector. If you're dealing with abstract or high-level goals in your work, then you'll surely pick up a few nuggets of wisdom from this conversation. Enjoy! - Marc --- [ 1. Summary:This week on How To Win: Brian Bourque, SVP of Marketing at SmartAsset, where they've grown a lead generation business from $0 to $100M+ in revenue primarily through paid acquisition marketing and SEO. Brian has a ton of experience leading profitable paid acquisition teams in quantitative, direct-response marketing businesses. He's an advocate of using behavioral psychology, tech, data, and creativity to find exciting, new approaches to business. In this episode, Brian breaks down six important lessons he's learned throughout his career. We discuss why tactics aren't strategy, why the internet is bigger than you think, and, for lesson one, why scaling is about realizing where the leverage lies in each part of your company. I give my thoughts on what a good strategy looks like, the concept of pattern interrupt, and why if they 'zig', you should 'zag'.Key Points: Lesson One - Scaling is about realizing where the leverage lies in each part of your company (01:17) How do you find out which points of leverage are the best? (02:51) I weigh in on the overuse of the term 'scaling' (05:15) Lesson Two - Tactics are not the same as strategy (05:53) I talk about the differences between tactics and strategy with a quote from author Richard P. Rumelt (08:15) Lesson Three - There is value in asking, "What would need to be true to achieve X?" (09:42) I give my thoughts on finding your way to 'X' with a quote from author Roger Martin (12:08) I recall a story from Matt Epstein, former VP of Marketing at Zenefits, about impossible goals with a quote from Matt (14:07) Lesson Four - The internet is larger than you think (15:44) Lesson Five - At scale, everyone is a competitor (18:09) I discuss the concept of pattern interrupt with a quote from Mutiny's Jaleh Rezaei (20:41) Lesson Six - When they 'zig', you 'zag' (22:11) I explain why you should always 'zag' with a quote from author Marty Neumeier (22:55) Wrap up (24:40) Mentioned:Brian Bourque LinkedInBrian Bourque TwitterBrian Bourque's NewsletterRichard P. Innovation Inside LaunchStreet: Leading Innovators | Business Growth | Improve Your Innovation Game

Strategy is great to talk about hypothetically, but we’re taking it a step further to dig into how good (or bad) strategy plays out in real-world case studies. Derrick Kuhn, serial entrepreneur and owner of Brillity Digital, a digital marketing and business strategy company, joins me on the second of this two-part series to continue our deep dive on strategy.   When it comes to strategy, the fundamental starting point lies in the diagnosis of the current situation, something that is often missed out in the conversation. Derrick and I explore how we can start rethinking goal-setting using the concept of proximate objectives, and why “strategy” should move from diagnosis to strategy to tactics and an action plan.   We deconstruct each of our business strategies and uncover some of the crucial flaws I had in my thinking around strategy, and some of the myths and outdated ways of doing things I was holding on to. Derrick and I come up with a better way of doing my strategy that has already made a difference, and discuss the roles of different people in bringing together diverse perspectives that can ultimately make a significant difference in your company’s success to implement your strategy.   If you are ready to: get buy-in from key decision makers on your next big idea be a high-impact, high-value member that ignites change foster a culture of innovation where everyone on your team is bringing innovative ideas that tackle challenges and seize opportunities… Join us on LaunchStreet — gotolaunchstreet.com   Mentioned in This Episode: Derrick Kuhn on LinkedIn Brillity Digital Good Strategy, Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why it Matters, by Richard P. Innovation Inside LaunchStreet: Leading Innovators | Business Growth | Improve Your Innovation Game

Strategy — it’s one of those big words that gets thrown around a lot, but everyone has a different idea of what it means. Even more importantly, strategy is something that a lot of us get wrong. Personally and professionally, we often set goals and objectives — a strategy is what helps us get there. The challenge most of us face is that we are approaching strategy in a way that takes us further from our goals and objectives. So where do we begin creating a strategy?   Derrick Kuhn, serial entrepreneur and owner of Brillity Digital, a digital marketing and business strategy company, joins me on the first of this two-part series to do a deep dive into strategy. We deconstruct what makes strategy good or bad, and the types of people you need at the head of a strategy to implement it. The thing is, strategy is not about achieving a broad objective. It’s about painting a path forward that has methodology and an action plan that can be identified and prioritized to get to the objective.   Missed growth and lost opportunities are the results of bad strategy. Derrick and I explore why it’s so important to take into consideration the dynamics of the marketplace when creating a strategy, and why a strategy that has worked in the past may not be suitable to move forward. Ultimately, we need to diagnose before building strategy; how do we figure out what the right things are to be thinking about? Derrick shares some insight on that, as well as some of the fundamental issues in the business that could optimize and/or hinder its ability to get to the next level.   If you are ready to: get buy-in from key decision makers on your next big idea be a high-impact, high-value member that ignites change foster a culture of innovation where everyone on your team is bringing innovative ideas that tackle challenges and seize opportunities… Join us on LaunchStreet — gotolaunchstreet.com   Mentioned in This Episode: Derrick Kuhn on LinkedIn Brillity Digital Good Strategy/Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why it Matters, by Richard P.
