The urban heat island effect exacerbates the problem, and traditional cooling solutions often come with high energy costs or water consumption. ThermoShade, founded by Emily Dinino, offers an innovative alternative—a cooling technology that provides relief without requiring electricity or water.ThermoShade's high-tech shade panels use passive radiative cooling, leveraging phase change materials to absorb heat during the hottest parts of the day and recharge overnight. “We saw a gap in the market,” Emily explained. “Shade alone is not cutting it. People and animals need a solution that provides real relief, and we're delivering just that.” These advanced panels can make shaded areas feel up to 20 degrees cooler than traditional awnings.Emily developed ThermoShade while earning her MBA at UCLA. Inspired by firsthand experiences of extreme heat in Los Angeles, she and her team conducted over 100 interviews with scientists, engineers, and potential customers to refine the concept. “We realized that most existing solutions required electricity or water—resources that aren't always available or sustainable,” Emily said. “By applying phase change materials in a new way, we created a cooling solution that's both effective and accessible.”Beyond urban environments, ThermoShade is exploring applications in agriculture, particularly for dairy farms where heat stress impacts cattle productivity. The company is currently conducting a pilot study with Fresno State to analyze how the technology can improve livestock health and efficiency.ThermoShade is currently raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on MicroVentures. “We believe crowdfunding makes sense for us because people understand the challenges of extreme heat,” Emily said. “It's an opportunity to engage the public in a solution they can benefit from directly.”With climate change making extreme heat an increasingly urgent issue, innovative and sustainable solutions like ThermoShade are more critical than ever. By leveraging advanced materials and smart design, Emily and her team are helping cities, communities, and industries adapt to a warming world without exacerbating the problem.tl;dr:ThermoShade's innovative panels use phase change materials to provide passive cooling, reducing heat by up to 20 degrees.Emily Dinino developed ThermoShade during her MBA at UCLA, conducting extensive research to refine the technology. The company is raising funds on MicroVentures to scale its impact and expand into new markets.A pilot study with Fresno State aims to assess the effectiveness of ThermoShade in agriculture, particularly for dairy cattle.Emily's superpower is informed decision-making—she synthesizes data, perspectives, and insights to drive innovation and solve complex challenges. How to Develop Informed Decision-Making As a SuperpowerEmily Dinino's superpower is informed decision-making—the ability to synthesize data, perspectives, and insights to confidently determine the best course of action.“Being a founder means navigating an overwhelming amount of input—from investors, customers, and advisors. I take in all that information, challenge assumptions, and make informed decisions that align with our mission,” Emily explained. One defining moment of this ability occurred in her role as a finance manager at an ed-tech nonprofit. Tasked with developing a 10-year strategic plan, Emily had to balance competing priorities from the board, funders, co-founders, and department heads. By distilling complex financial and operational data into a cohesive model, she secured buy-in from all stakeholders, ensuring the plan's success. For those looking to develop this superpower, Emily offers the following insights:Actively listen to diverse perspectives. Understand not just what people are saying, but why they believe in their approach.Challenge assumptions. Question conventional wisdom to uncover the best path forward.Use data to validate decisions. Gather and analyze information before committing to a course of action.Stay confident in your expertise. Recognize that while advice is valuable, you know your business best.Surround yourself with trusted mentors. Seek guidance from experienced individuals who can help refine your thinking.By following Emily's example and advice, you can make informed decision-making a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileEmily Dinino (she/her):Founder and CEO, ThermoShadeAbout ThermoShade: ThermoShade's mission is to make cities and communities more resilient to climate change by providing a cooling alternative that is clean, effective, and affordable. ThermoShade is a high-tech passive cooling shade panel that can be affixed to any outdoor structure, creating a shady space that feels up to 20°F cooler than under a basic awning. Implementing ThermoShade will help avoid electricity related GHG emissions, improve grid resilience and affordability, deliver energy savings to customers, and improve public health and safety outcomes.Website: getthermoshade.comOther URL: https://invest.microventures.com/offerings/thermoshade?referral_code=ThermoShadeSuperpowersForGoodBiographical Information: Emily Dinino is the Founder & CEO of ThermoShade. Clarify your purpose — and stop wasting time. The new year gives us an opportunity to reflect on who we are and who we want to be. As we set resolutions and prepare for evolutions, this special four-part series on communication, happiness, and well-being explores practical ways to enhance our lives through better communication, deeper connections, and more meaningful choices. As Cassie Holmes knows, how we spend our time has a big impact on our happiness and well-being. For her, that means focusing on the things not just immediately in front of us, but those that most closely align with our purpose."When I say purpose, what I mean is what really drives you," explains Holmes, a professor at UCLA Anderson School of Management and author of Happier Hour: How to Beat Distraction, Expand Your Time, and Focus on What Matters Most. Living a happier and more fulfilled life, she says, rests on using purpose to drive our decisions. “Once you clarify for yourself: what is your purpose? What is your why? Then you can use that as a filter [for] where you should be spending your time.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Holmes and host Matt Abrahams explore practical strategies for being more purposeful with our time. Brett Gordon sits down with JP Dube and Günter Hitsch from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and Peter Rossi from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. They discuss their influential paper, “Do Switching Costs Make Markets Less Competitive?” Since the 1960s, marketing and economics scholars have studied switching costs, with theoretical literature largely suggesting that these costs lead to higher prices among competing firms. However, when these three researchers conducted an empirical analysis, they found surprising results that challenged the prevailing wisdom. Join them as they share how their project evolved over time, including their measured response to critical feedback and how they expanded their initial scope of inquiry.

One of the largest investor-owned utilities in the country is preparing for an 80% increase in electricity demand by 2045. In this episode of Grid Talk, host Marty Rosenberg interviews Steve Powell who is the president and CEO of Southern California Edison. With a customer base of 15 million people across a 50,000 square mile service area, Southern California Edison is changing the way it prepares for the increased demand.“Our engineers that are frankly used to dealing with relatively small changes on the grid and small amounts of load growth and really focus on just making sure that the infrastructure stays reliable are now having to think very differently about how we plan for customer load growth and load growth is showing up really quickly,” said Powell.Meeting the demand for carbon free electricity means more generation from wind and solar and other sources like nuclear and geothermal. It also means more transmission to get electricity to customers.“You look at the California Independent System Operator's 20-year outlook and they're talking about 50 plus billion dollars of new transmission that needs to get built. We're going to need to build transmission miles at four times the pace that we've seen historically.”Powell admits 20 years is short timeframe, and the industry needs to move faster. “About 20% of the energy that customers use is electricity. By the time you get to 2045, I would expect 50 to 60% of it to be electricity based. So, customers are going to be two to three times more dependent on electricity than they are today. That means our level of service has to be better. Reliability is going to have to be better.”Steven Powell is president and chief executive officer of Southern California Edison. Powell has held a variety of positions of progressing responsibility since joining the company in 2000, including executive vice president, Operations and senior vice president of Strategy, Planning, and Operational Performance.  He has a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles and received his MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management. He has also held leadership positions in resource planning and strategy, gas and power procurement, and SCE's plug-in electric vehicle readiness efforts.

Notably, his work challenges traditional assumptions, such as the perceived safety of life insurance companies' investments in Treasuries. So, it's not really just what you like to do, but how you react to others in the market.” — Professor Valentin Haddad (0:06:40)   “If nobody's acquiring information, then markets are very inefficient. Then, you should step in, in a way. So, if everybody is becoming passive, there are more gains for being not passive.” — Professor Valentin Haddad (0:22:59)   “Speculation often comes with innovation.” — Professor Valentin Haddad (0:28:30)   “I think these concerns with passive investing are meaningful. I don't think it's quite yet the time for a very strong regulatory call. Regulators should keep track of this evolution.” — Professor Valentin Haddad (0:31:42)   “You can gain from bubbles, but at the end, the end of the bubble comes. While there, Guy also worked at a jewelry company, Nova Stylings. He said, "The jewelry business is a very, very tough business, tougher than the computer business... I learned a very valuable lesson: how to sell." It's helpful to know that we are all in sales every day. Whether you think you're in sales or not… You are. You're selling yourself, your ideas, projects, products. It's useful to learn how to sell. Melanie Perkins, CEO of Canva (which is an amazing product and company)... "She's Steve Jobs with heart and soul. They are on a relentless pursuit of perfection." Guy's counting dots story… It started in 6th grade. A teacher pushed him to go to a private school. That led to him getting into Stanford. This is where he met Mike Boich, who ended up hiring him at Apple. Then getting asked to go on the TEDx stage with Jane Goodall… Guy has made the most of the good fortune in his life… Steve Jobs/Change Your Mind: Guy launched his tech career at Apple as the company's “chief evangelist,” marketing the original Macintosh computer.  When Jobs first introduced the iPhone in 2007, it was a closed system — no one outside of Apple could create an app for it. Software developers had to use a Safari plugin to make their app work on the phone, as they weren't able to access the iPhone's system directly in order to ensure the phone's security. Just one year later, however, Jobs made a complete “180-degree reversal,” The founder opened the iPhone system to the public after realizing how much more the device could offer customers with apps written by anyone with a good idea. “I learned the very valuable lesson that when you're doing something wrong when you're doing something sub-optimally, it's a sign of intelligence to change your mind.” Throughout our conversation, Guy talks about being an evangelist, and the definition of that is to “bring the good news.”  Default to yes. Make yourself indispensable. Learn to say, "I'm sorry," and "I don't know." Guy shares a story about a disagreement he had with Steve Jobs and how that cost him millions of dollars… But he learned an important lesson from Steve that has impacted him ever since.

If you dive deep into financial advisor fixed effects, you'll begin to understand that an advisor's own portfolio has a bigger impact on the portfolios of their clients than the characteristics of the clients themselves. To help us make sense of this and to further explain financial values and the cross-section of returns, we are joined by the influential and notorious Professor of Finance, Juhani Linnainmaa. Our conversation begins with a comprehensive analysis of financial values, including a comparison between the trading patterns of advisors and those of their clients, a disquisition of misguided beliefs, an examination of client characteristics, and the ins and outs of portfolio variation and customizations. Canada recently adopted regulations from the Mutual Fund Dealers Association (MFDA), and we discuss how this has affected the use of financial advice in the country before comparing the benefit of increased equity share to the cost of advice, what hiring a new advisor before a financial crisis may mean for clients, and the role of regulation in the industry. We end with the cross-section of returns by examining accounting-based anomalies pre-1963, how profitability and investment relate to data mining, why a financial firm would switch between growth and value, and finally, Professor Juhani Linnainmaa's definition of success.     Key Points From This Episode: (0:00:42) A very warm welcome to the influential Professor of Finance, Juhani Linnainmaa.  (0:03:52) Comparing the trading patterns of advisors to those of their clients.  (0:08:45) How regulators can go about addressing misguided beliefs.  (0:11:08) Client characteristics that advisors base portfolio customizations on.  (0:13:22) Whether the variation in a client's portfolio can be explained by their characteristics.  (0:14:49) Explaining the remaining variation in portfolios.  (0:19:38) Other reasons for the high cost of advising, aside from portfolio customization.  (0:22:03) How the adoption of the MFDA affected the use of financial advice in Canada.
