In this episode of the AIGA Design Podcast, Lee-Sean Huang and Giulia Donatello speak with Ivan Boscariol, Senior Innovation Specialist and public service designer at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Ivan shares his journey from a background in international relations to working at the intersection of design, innovation, and public service in Latin America. The conversation explores what it means to be a designer within a large public institution, and how to navigate the cultural and bureaucratic complexities that come with the territory. Ivan reflects on the importance of intentionality in design, the need to adapt innovation processes to local contexts, and why trust and collaboration are essential to driving change. He also unpacks the multiple meanings of design practice—as a verb and as a noun—and how those interpretations shift across cultures. Offering a fresh perspective, Ivan highlights the often-overlooked upsides of bureaucracy, and how structure can actually support innovation within large, complex organizations like the IDB.From the challenges of scaling solutions to the power of relationship-building, this episode offers valuable insights into designing for impact within systems that are often slow to change—but full of potential. What if we viewed bureaucracy not as a barrier, but as a material we can design with?Ivan's LinkedInDocumentary: Horizon Zero DawnBook: Good Strategy, Bad Strategy by Richard P. In April, a group of multilateral development banks signed an agreement to work more closely together, known as a viewpoint note, which set a series of goals, including scaling up their financing capacity, and delivering more on climate. Earlier this week, at the U.N. General Assembly, the heads of MDBs sat down with U.N. leaders to identify how they could make more progress to deliver those goals. Devex heard from Ilan Goldfajn, president of the Inter-American Development Bank, about the steps taken so far. Goldfajn said there had been considerable progress in unifying the goals of the MDBs with the Group of 20 major economies and with U.N. agencies. MDBs have increased lending capacity by $400 billion over the next 10 years, mostly through reforms but partly due to closer working, Goldfajn explained. He added that last year, the banks had lent a quarter more on climate and doubled the amount of finance mobilized, compared to 2022. He also highlighted several projects where IDB had worked together with the World Bank and the EIB. Devex Senior Reporter Adva Saldinger sat down with Goldfajn for a special episode of our This Week in Global Development podcast series. I had deadlines, Ethan got super sick, Si had stuff come up, and Griffin remained dead. So we scrambled to tape it yesterday and get it edited for today. And, as always, when I say “we” I mean Ethan but I wanted to take some credit. So give “us” a big round of applause.I was very excited to finally get Si on the show. In addition to being friends for years, he is a writer who constantly gets me excited about comics. From character defining runs on X-MEN books and HELLBLAZER, to groundbreaking creator owned books like CODA, ANGELIC, GODSHAPER, CRY HAVOC, THE SPIRE, STEP BY BLOODY STEP, and DAMN THEM ALL, each new title changes and reinvents what I think I know about his work. So it was a blast to get to catch up, and even more fun to get to pick his brain about how he does what he does.Hope you dig the interview. And if you do, I'd urge you to grab some of his books from your local shop. And this week in IDBClassic we have Part II of our interview with Writer/Artist/Raconteur Ryan Stegman. The bad news is that a whole lotta life stuff got in the way of getting this episode out on time. What kind of life stuff? I'm not really sure because I was just sitting in my apartment watching THE ENGLISH. But I also don't know how to actually get the words into the podcast or get the podcast into the email, so I am 100% dependent on my right and left hands- Ethan and Griffin. And they are both having a real shitty week. All I know is that Ethan is a trooper and Griffin is doing something he calls “full caveman” so he can't even get us the proper title card for the show. The good news is that, despite having a bad time, they are consummate professionals and we did actually manage to get the words into the podcast and the podcast into the email. So here you go. Title card be damned. And it's extra good news because this is a fun one. We got to chat with my pal Deniz Camp about his new ULTIMATES comic for Marvel Comics and a bunch of other stuff. If you've never read any of Deniz's work I'd urge you to go grab 20th CENTURY MEN with Stipan Morian and Aditya Bidikar. It truly is a fascinating, powerful, and dense book that doesn't quite read like anything else out there. A story about wars- cold, hot, and super-powered. But it is also a story about giving yourself over to something bigger than yourself, about questioning the world and your place in it, about faith, about loyalty, and about man's inhumanity to man and our complicity in all of it. It's not one you just read lightly. And Stipan's art is one of the great joys in comics these last few years. So go to your local comic shop and grab a copy. Also grab all of 20th CENTURY BOYS by Naoki Urasawa. It's unrelated but it's so damn good.Anyway, enjoy the podcast and send some love to Ethan and Griffin today. They could use it.That's it for me. Stay safe. Take care of each other. I bet you didn't think we were going to have two Mondays this week, did you?-Matthew RosenbergNYC 6/25/24 This is a public episode.
