fWotD Episode 2597: The Spider (magazine) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Friday, 14 June 2024 is The Spider (magazine). The Spider was an American pulp magazine published by Popular Publications from 1933 to 1943. Every issue included a lead novel featuring The Spider, a heroic crime-fighter. The magazine was intended as a rival to Street & Smith's The Shadow and Standard Magazine's The Phantom Detective, which also featured crime-fighting heroes. The novels in the first two issues were written by R. T. M. Scott; thereafter every lead novel was credited to "Grant Stockbridge", a house name. Norvell Page, a prolific pulp author, wrote most of these; almost all the rest were written by Emile Tepperman and A. H. Bittner. The novel in the final issue was written by Prentice Winchell. The Spider's secret identity was Richard Wentworth, a rich New Yorker. Unlike some contemporary pulp heroes, The Spider was willing to kill criminals, and when he did so he left a red spider inked on his victims. Page in particular wrote stories with violent storylines, often with science-fiction plot devices. Bittner had written for Popular's horror magazines, Terror Tales and Horror Stories, and his stories included horror tropes such as criminals planning to sell human flesh as meat. Continuity from novel to novel was often disregarded: New York would be resurrected each issue from whatever disaster had afflicted it the previous month, and characters killed in one issue would reappear unscathed in later issues. As well as the lead novel, each issue featured short stories, also in the crime fiction genre. Occasionally these included elements of horror fiction, but any apparently supernatural phenomena were always explained away by the end of the story. Authors of these stories included Tepperman, Arthur Leo Zagat, and Frank Gruber. Most of the cover art was painted by John Newton Howitt and (for the last few years of the magazine's run) by Rafael de Soto. The magazine was cancelled in 1943 because of the shortage of paper caused by World War II. The last issue was dated December 1943. The manuscript of an unpublished Spider novel by Donald G. Cormack was discovered in 1978 and published in 1979 as Legend in Blue Steel. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:49 UTC on Friday, 14 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Spider (magazine) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Standard.
In this episode, Ceri is joined by Paul Hedge, the founder and owner of Hales Gallery, which was established in 1992 in a Deptford café. Paul shares his inspiring journey from a working-class background to becoming an established figure in the art scene. With passion and dedication, he has been a pioneer of inclusivity since long before the term became widely used. Paul discusses the artists who have had the most significant impact on him throughout his career and challenges the perceptions many people have about art galleries and artist representation. He also shares the unique ways he built his profile as an art dealer and how he found success by simply being himself through the power of traditional networking and never letting a lack of knowledge hold him back! KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul grew up in a council house in Stevenage, and his parents moved there from East London after the war. As a child, Paul noticed paintings in his grandparents' house and began questioning them at a young age. He also developed an interest in art books in his school library. In the 60s and 70s, career advice was centred around following in one's father's footsteps, and art was rarely discussed as a career option. Paul attended Goldsmiths Art College, where he was tutored by renowned artists such as John Bellamy, Richard Wentworth, and feminist artist Mary Kelly. It was during this time that he started his first gallery. Exhibitions appealed to Paul as they allowed him to showcase other people's work and share his thoughts, opinions, and art knowledge with others. Before finding success in the art world, Paul worked as a postman, delivering mail to notable figures like Michael Caine and Harold Wilson. This experience allowed him to visit commercial art galleries in London and ask questions to artists and owners. Paul and his business partner set up a café to help fund the gallery, enabling them to make a living while creating a space for art. The café's success allowed them to run a programme and eventually establish the gallery in its own right. The gallery's foundation was built on giving artists a voice and listening to their ideas, including those of women, which was not as common in the 90s. One of their early successes was Japanese artist Tomoko Takahashi. For Paul, style was never a driving factor; instead, race, gender, and class have always been at the forefront of the gallery's mission. Paul has consistently utilised his enthusiasm and creativity to find ways to get things done and succeed, even when faced with challenges or a lack of knowledge in certain areas. BEST MOMENTS "Everything you thought was changed, everything you believed was changed” “When I think about our shows, they were quite out there” “Wow a curtain pole from Harold Wilson, you're not going to say no” “I've never been short of ambition” “We managed to get some money from the Tories, they gave us some money because we were enterprising” “Parallel to the café being a success, the gallery also became quite successful quite quickly” “Richard Woods, we did an early show with him” “I think punk and growing up in an environment where anything could happen made me think in a particular way” “The odder the better that's my cup of tea” “People's worst nightmare is a working-class bloke with money” “You didn't let the fact that you didn't know stand in the way of your figuring some way” PODCAST HOST BIO Meet Ceri Hand, the driving force behind countless creative success stories. So-called extinct objects are those that were imagined but were never in use, or that existed but are now unused—superseded, unfashionable, or simply forgotten. Extinct: A Compendium of Obsolete Objects (Reaktion Books, 2021) gathers together an exceptional range of artists, curators, architects, critics, and academics, including Hal Foster, Barry Bergdoll, Deyan Sudjic, Tacita Dean, Emily Orr, Richard Wentworth, and many more. In eighty-five essays, contributors nominate “extinct” objects and address them in a series of short, vivid, sometimes personal accounts, speaking not only of obsolete technologies, but of other ways of thinking, making, and interacting with the world. Extinct is filled with curious, half-remembered objects, each one evoking a future that never came to pass. It is also a visual treat, full of interest and delight. Richard Wentworth is an artist based in London. "Without feeling sorry for myself, I feel like a bit of a misfit […] I don't really have a tidy sense of where [I belong]. I want to be effective. I would be a bit bored if I died and no one ever mentioned me again – not because I want them to say “do you know he was such and such” – I'd like to be the grit in a lot of shoes, and I'd like that grit to be useful across quite a lot of subjects."Scaffold is an Architecture Foundation project, produced by Matthew Blunderfield. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Richard Wentworth-Ping (Facilitator, Executive Coach and Consultant) joins the workplace podcast to share over 30 years of his experience of Learning and Development (L&D). A truth sayer with his direct communication style especially towards trends in L&D. Richard provides his learnings that will help organisations make learning more effective. Changing behaviours, changing mindsets, changing cultures, changing the way people lead, manage and communicate. Richard's view is that organisations don't change. People change. If enough people in an organisation change, then the organisation is changed, as is the culture. Richard is not convinced by the idea that change has to be hard, nor that 70% of change initiatives fail. Change can be achieved and there's plenty of evidence it can be enjoyable. The way to develop capability, build habits, change behaviours and impact the business results and metrics that matter is very like getting fit: the person who wants to get fit has to do the work and exercise. The personal trainer can provide input, methodology, encouragement, support but the sit ups are yours to do. This podcast is essential listening for people interested in Learning and Development for rethinking learning in the workplace.

In a very short time they had almost all of the roles cast and Mr. Wentworth began location scouting, while Aural Stage Studios, Inc. began gathering equipment and sound props. Richard Wentworth has been a major player in New British Sculpture for over thirty years. His work often focusses on the idea of objects and questions our understanding of them within the context of our daily lives. In this episode of life in Scents he talks to Jo Barratt about his relationship with smell. Chemical, glue and workshop smells sit alongside a consideration of how we think about and relate smell in a wider sense. As well as many other things Richard muses on the meaning that humans ascribe to that moment after a thunderstorm and how ideas of ‘clean’ or ‘dirty’ relate to how we see ourselves within the world, as well as his hatred of perfumed candle shops.
