Nicolas Cage may be safely back in his crypt of chaos (for now), which means Andy, Stu, and Ed are turning their gaze to capes, cowls, and cosmic punch‑ups. For the rest of November, it's all about superhero cinema. In the first half of this week's episode, the trio tackle Esquire's 25 Best Superhero Films list. Which entries truly earn their spot in the pantheon, and which feel more like hype than heroics? Expect passionate calibration, nit‑picking, and the occasional defense of the underdog. Then Absurd Autumn marches on as Andy and Stu pivot to John Carpenter's 1988 cult classic They Live. Sunglasses, subliminal messaging, and one of the most gloriously overlong alleyway brawls in movie history — it's Carpenter at his most satirical and surreal. The duo unpack its absurd brilliance, its biting social commentary, and why it still resonates decades later.Get us on the Socials @CageFightingPodUse my special link (cagefighting) to save 30% off your first month of any Zencastr paid plan.
Who teaches AI how to see and recognise? Definitely not a techie in a cool office in Silicon Valley. Most likely, it is a homemaker from a marginalised community in rural India who does this tedious work for very low pay. In his debut feature film "Humans in the Loop," director Aranya Sahay explores this vital detail that got left out of the "AI Revolution" marketing materials. The film follows Nehma, an Adivasi woman from Jharkhand who takes a job labelling data for AI systems. Turns out, teaching machines to recognise the world is a lot like raising a kid; except this kid absorbs prejudices from centuries of Western datasets, with no plan to augment it with context-specific knowledge. Esp. not from the labellers :-). The film has won major accolades, including Best Film at the Bengaluru International Film Festival and Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. Episode #534! Mystery Men! Before the Marvel Age of movies, super hero films with a few exceptions weren't the box office giants they are today. They hadn't grabbed the general public yet with their limited effects, crude costumes and let's be honest weak stories. Most tended to not take themselves seriously anyway. As a super hero fan you took what you could get though. Now 25 years later, we look back at one of those movies, the super hero/comedy Mystery Men. Give it a listen!
Today on the 5: I came across an opinion piece over on Polygon talking how Deadpool & Wolverine signals the end of experimentation in superhero films. While I agree with many of the points made in the piece, I'm not sure a lack of experimentation is the problem we cirrently have in superhero cinema.

The heresy of docetism evolved into a complicated web of schools of mythology, which we lump together under the name of gnosticism. These all still denied the real humanity of Christ, though in two distinct ways. Docetic gnosticism continued the trend of seeing Christ as a phantom, with no real tangible body. “Hybrid” gnosticism made concessions to the accounts of a tangible body of Jesus, but called it an ethereal, or luminous, body - in other words, not a true material flesh and blood body.
