In this eye-opening conversation with Mary Kelly and Jemika Sivak from Skin Sanctuary Med Spa and Integrative Health, we dive deep into the fascinating world where beauty treatments meet functional medicine. The duo shatters common misconceptions about aesthetic procedures like Botox, explaining how these treatments have evolved far beyond Hollywood celebrities to become accessible options for everyday wellness. Their strategic approach focuses not on freezing expressions but on enhancing natural features while preventing signs of aging. But this conversation goes much deeper than skin deep. We explore the revolutionary concept of "health span" versus "lifespan," addressing why so many people spend their retirement years managing preventable chronic conditions instead of thriving. Jemika breaks down the functional medicine approach that looks at root causes rather than symptoms, explaining the crucial connection between gut health and everything from mental clarity to immune function. Most shocking is their revelation that the "Four Horsemen" of modern health—heart disease, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and type 2 diabetes—are up to 80% preventable through lifestyle choices.Whether you're curious about red light therapy's ability to recharge your cellular batteries or wondering about the real story behind weight loss medications like GLP-1 agonists, this episode delivers practical wisdom without judgment. Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. This week on 'Art is Awesome,' host Emily Wilson chats with Stephanie Robison, a sculptor living in Oakland and the chair of City College of San Francisco's Art Department. The episode delves into Stephanie's background, from growing up in Oregon and being encouraged by a high school counselor to attend college, to falling in love with sculpture, particularly stone. Stephanie discusses her creative process, the resistance she enjoys from materials like marble, and how her grandmother inspired her love for making things. She also shares her experiences with exhibitions and her thoughts on teaching. About Artist Stephanie Robison:Originally from Oregon, Stephanie currently resides in California teaching sculpture and serving as Art Department Chair at the City College of San Francisco. Robison holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Marylhurst University and a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Oregon. Her work has been exhibited at Marrow Gallery, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art and Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in California, Robischon Gallery in Denver, Colorado, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Joseph A Cain Memorial Art Gallery and Greater Denton Arts Council in Texas, Yeiser Art Center in Kentucky, Site:Brooklyn Gallery in New York, Foster/White Gallery, Whatcom Museum and Tacoma Art Museum in Washington, and Peter Robertson Gallery in Alberta Canada.Stephanie is represented by Marrow Gallery in San Francisco, California and Foster/White Gallery in Seattle, Washington. Her work can also be found at Robischon Gallery in Denver, Colorado. The sculptures of Stephanie Robison plays with multiple oppositional relationships. Working with industrial fabrics and wood, she creates large-scale installations that examine relationships between culture, nature and the built environment. Her latest series of work combines traditional stone carving and the process of needle felting wool. By merging incongruous materials such as wool and marble, she works to synthesize and fuse: organic and geometric, natural and architectural, handmade and the uniform industrial. Focusing on materiality and color with this new work, Robison creates charming, often humorous or awkward forms referencing aspects of the body, relationships and the environment. Mary Kelly was the final victim of the infamous Victorian-era serial killer, Jack The Ripper. The circumstances of her death overshadow her life, and in The Last Dance of Mary Kelly , E. David Brown imagines for her a life and occupation beyond the "prostitute" label typically attributed to her. Having fled poverty in Ireland, Mary Kelly finds employment in a textile factory where she becomes embroiled in the workers' movement, and the investigations of American journalist, Bryson Ward. Victorian London doesn't "shine" in this novel of intrigue and historical injustices; rather, it seeps into the skin like a coal-infused fog, and keeps you hooked. Because you might think you know the history, but until you turn the final page you won't know the whole story.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Writing a book may feel like running a marathon, but it's really more like an Ironman Triathlon because marathon runners get to stop when they reach the finish line, but an Ironman is a multi-stage journey that challenges you in different ways. To complete the metaphor… First, there's the swim—dipping into your ideas and getting them down on paper. Then comes the long bike ride, where you push through the editing and revising phase. And finally, the run—publishing and marketing your book, which requires just as much stamina and strategy as the rest. It's a test of perseverance, but with the right support and resources, you can cross that finish line successfully. I've created resources to help you find your author community and meet experts who help entrepreneurs become successful authors. The Biz Book Publishing Hub has over 50 Hub Partners ready to guide you through writing, editing, publishing, and marketing your business book. This free resource is available at www.BizBookPublishingHub.com, where you'll also find out about the free Hub Community virtual networking events I host throughout the year and all the archived episodes of the Biz Book Publishing Hub Podcast. With me today are three authors. Brendan McAdams wrote “Sales Craft: Proven Tips, Tactics and Ideas to Elevate Your Sales,” which provides actionable strategies and techniques designed to enhance sales performance and help professionals succeed in their sales endeavors. Darcy Eikenberg wrote “Red Cape Rescue: Save Your Career Without Leaving Your Job,” a transformative guide to overcoming personal challenges and fostering resilience from the comfort of your own space. It empowers readers to take charge of their lives. Mary Kelly wrote “Stop Procrastinating Tomorrow: Attack What's Holding You Back” to offer practical strategies and motivational insights to help readers overcome procrastination and take actionable steps toward achieving their goals. Please join me in welcoming Brendan, Darcy, and Mary. In this episode, we discuss the following:

The ancient almanac has a very good track record when it comes to predicting what will take place the following year. To find out more about the Almanac, what they got right this year, and what is in store for 2025, Alan Morrissey was joined by Nicole Buckler, Editor of Old Moore's Almanac. Today is Thanksgiving in the U.S., and after a fall – and a year – of divisiveness, could all use a holiday in which Americans are united in the task of consuming too much pie. More broadly, this holiday, more than really any other, is something Americans tend to do together. And so is parenting. Especially the beginning. The experience of having a newborn – the sleeplessness, the disconnection from reality, the wonder….it feels magical and unique, and yet also like a line connecting us to billions of people through the past. Today on ParentData, we're featuring an episode from another podcast, The Lonely Palette, that addresses this contradiction and the many others that just go hand-in-hand with parenting. It's made by our producer Tamar Avishai; before she came to ParentData, she created this independent art history podcast, and this episode, about a 1970s feminist artist named Mary Kelly, felt perfect for the ParentData audience. Kelly meticulously tracked every data point from her son's birth until age five (diaper stains, scribbles, first babbles, etc.) as a way of both coping with the lack of control mothers feel, and, just maybe, to try to hold on to something so fleeting. This episode combines Tamar's love of art history, Emily's love of data, and their shared love of parenting. Enjoy, preferably over another slice of pie. See the images discussed in the episode. A leading expert in AI is urging lawmakers to rapidly pass new legislation to regulate Agentic AI, a ground-breaking new form of AI capable of completing complex goal-oriented tasks without the need of a human prompt. President of the European Responsible AI Office (EURAIO) Nell Watson made the call today during her keynote speech at Learnovation 2024, the annual summit on the future of work and learning, which took place at the Aviva Stadium. Alongside her role as head of the EURAIO, Nell is an executive consultant for Apple and a senior scientific advisor to The Future Society, an independent non-profit focused on developing and implementing governance mechanisms for AI. She has also been a senior fellow to The Atlantic Council, a US think tank. The theme of Learnovation 2024 is 'Navigating the Future of Learning', with speakers and workshops focused on preparing learners for the challenges of the 21st century and the future of work. Learnovation is the annual summit organised by The Learnovate Centre, a leading global future of work and learning research hub funded by Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland and based at Trinity College Dublin. Nell told Learnovation 2024 this morning that autonomous Agentic AI represents a significant upgrade on traditional AI and generative AI models which require human prompts. In response, industry must prepare workers for the introduction of the technology with new workplace training and upskilling programmes that teach innovative and independent thinking. She also told the conference that, while applications of Agentic AI will have positive effects for many, especially those with disabilities, lawmakers and officials must still move quickly to pass new laws and regulations to defend workers' rights from bad corporate actors. They must also, she says, legislate to ensure developers impose limits on the AI itself so that it does not breach the law while working to achieve its goals. President of the European Responsible AI Office Nell Watson says: "Agentic AI promises to dramatically change the world of work and learning. It's vital that we start preparing people for that change through education, training and upskilling, and new laws and regulations to ensure that the rights of people are not sacrificed in the pursuit of corporate profit. "This technology has vast potential. Applications in virtual reality will allow people to learn new skills in low-stakes virtual environments. It will make learning more inclusive with applications for people with reduced hearing or sight loss, or those with speech issues. Applying Agentic AI to learning will have life-changing effects for many people. However, it remains hugely important that officials take action now to regulate this technology and protect workers' rights before Agentic AI becomes ubiquitous, rather than spend valuable time playing catch-up later." Director of The Learnovate Centre, Nessa McEniff, said: "Learnovation 2024 is looking at some extremely interesting and topical issues including how to recognise and remove barriers for innovation in learning and how to embed AI in education in ways that are both effective and responsible. We will also explore AI's role in learning technology and focus on corporate learning in the 21st Century and how to prepare for the challenges of the future workplace." The event's host is Dr. Mary Kelly, Academic Dean at Hibernia College, who also gave the opening address. Other speakers at Learnovation 2024 include: Richard Culatta, CEO at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Association for Supervision of Curriculum Development (ASCD), non-profit global education organisations based in Washington that are focused on accelerating innovation in education and elevating learning to meet the needs of all students. This Mother's Day, Paul and Dan discuss the role of mothers in D&D and mythology. From troll wives to Grendel's mother to the spawn of all monsters, Tiamat herself, moms make an impact in our lives! Throughout history, mothers have been depicted in a variety of art works, including paintings, sculptures and written texts, that have helped define the cultural meaning of 'mother', as well as ideals and taboos of motherhood. The institution of motherhood in western art is often depicted through "the myth of the all-loving, all-forgiving and all-sacrificing mother" and related ideals. Examples include works featuring the Virgin Mary, an archetypal mother and a key historical basis for depictions of mothers in western art from the European Renaissance onwards. Mothers depicted in dominant art works are also primarily white, heterosexual, middle class and young or attractive. These ideals of motherhood have been challenged by artists with lived experience as mothers. An example in western contemporary art is Mary Kelly's Post-Partum Document. Bypassing typical themes of tenderness or nostalgia, this work documents in extensive detail the challenges, complexities and day-to-day realities of the mother-child relationship. Other artists have addressed similar aspects of motherhood that fall outside dominant ideals, including maternal ambivalence, desire, and the pursuit of self-fulfillment. In this episode, Ceri is joined by Paul Hedge, the founder and owner of Hales Gallery, which was established in 1992 in a Deptford café. Paul shares his inspiring journey from a working-class background to becoming an established figure in the art scene. With passion and dedication, he has been a pioneer of inclusivity since long before the term became widely used. Paul discusses the artists who have had the most significant impact on him throughout his career and challenges the perceptions many people have about art galleries and artist representation. He also shares the unique ways he built his profile as an art dealer and how he found success by simply being himself through the power of traditional networking and never letting a lack of knowledge hold him back! KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul grew up in a council house in Stevenage, and his parents moved there from East London after the war. As a child, Paul noticed paintings in his grandparents' house and began questioning them at a young age. He also developed an interest in art books in his school library. In the 60s and 70s, career advice was centred around following in one's father's footsteps, and art was rarely discussed as a career option. Paul attended Goldsmiths Art College, where he was tutored by renowned artists such as John Bellamy, Richard Wentworth, and feminist artist Mary Kelly. It was during this time that he started his first gallery. Exhibitions appealed to Paul as they allowed him to showcase other people's work and share his thoughts, opinions, and art knowledge with others. Before finding success in the art world, Paul worked as a postman, delivering mail to notable figures like Michael Caine and Harold Wilson. This experience allowed him to visit commercial art galleries in London and ask questions to artists and owners. Paul and his business partner set up a café to help fund the gallery, enabling them to make a living while creating a space for art. The café's success allowed them to run a programme and eventually establish the gallery in its own right. The gallery's foundation was built on giving artists a voice and listening to their ideas, including those of women, which was not as common in the 90s. One of their early successes was Japanese artist Tomoko Takahashi. For Paul, style was never a driving factor; instead, race, gender, and class have always been at the forefront of the gallery's mission. Paul has consistently utilised his enthusiasm and creativity to find ways to get things done and succeed, even when faced with challenges or a lack of knowledge in certain areas. BEST MOMENTS "Everything you thought was changed, everything you believed was changed” “When I think about our shows, they were quite out there” “Wow a curtain pole from Harold Wilson, you're not going to say no” “I've never been short of ambition” “We managed to get some money from the Tories, they gave us some money because we were enterprising” “Parallel to the café being a success, the gallery also became quite successful quite quickly” “Richard Woods, we did an early show with him” “I think punk and growing up in an environment where anything could happen made me think in a particular way” “The odder the better that's my cup of tea” “People's worst nightmare is a working-class bloke with money” “You didn't let the fact that you didn't know stand in the way of your figuring some way” PODCAST HOST BIO Meet Ceri Hand, the driving force behind countless creative success stories. Zineb Sedira talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Sedira, born in Paris in 1963 to Algerian parents and based in London since 1986, uses film, photography, installation, sculpture and other media to reflect on memory, from the personal to the collective and historical. She explores representation, language and family, intimately informed by her French, Algerian and British identity. By mining her singular autobiography and its connection with colonial histories and their contemporary legacies, Sedira has created a body of work that is at once politically nuanced, emotionally complex and visually rich. She discusses her early interest in Mary Kelly, her enduring engagement with the art of JMW Turner, and her admiration for the Algerian painter Baya. She reflects on her fascination with the Pan-African Festival in Algiers in 1969, the subject of a body of work. And she talks about her love of jazz and ska, the influence of postcolonial writers, among much else. Plus, she gives insight into her studio life and answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: “what is art for?”Zineb Sedira: Dreams Have No Titles, Whitechapel Gallery, London, 15 February-12 May; the film version of the work is on display at Tate Britain until September 2024; Dreams Have No Titles, Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi , UAE, 3 October-28 January 2025; Let's go on singing!, Goodman Gallery, London, until 16 March; Standing Here Wondering Which Way to Go, Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon, Portugal, 19 June 2025-22 September 2025. Sutapa Biswas talks to Ben Luke about her influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped her life and work. Biswas was born in Santinekethan, India, in 1962, and her work in painting, drawing, photography and video explores race and gender within the context of colonialism and its legacies. Made over five decades since the early 1980s, her art is both rigorously consistent in its themes and thrillingly diverse in mood and mode—by turns poetic, activist and even satirical. She discusses her studies in art and art history with Griselda Pollock, among others, at the University of Leeds in the 1980s, where she challenged the Eurocentric framing of the course, and made crucial early pieces including the painting Housewives with Steak-knives (1983-85). She reflects on her family history, and the traumatic journey to the UK from India, and how this haunts her work today. She discusses the influence of artists including Leonor Fini, Johannes Vermeer and Mary Kelly, film-makers like Satyajit Ray and Jean Cocteau, and writers including Marcel Proust. And she answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Women in Revolt! Between August and November in 1888, an ominous figure swept the streets of East London, preying upon women who were down on their luck. It was during this time that an unidentified man - or woman - stalked the streets in the early morning hours, looking for their next unsuspecting victim. Mary Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddies, and Mary Kelly were all positively identified as the five victims of Jack the Ripper, but some say there were more. As quickly as they occurred, the murders ended abruptly, but not before Jack left a bloody trail of carnage in his path. Through DNA technology, investigators now believe they know the identity of Jack the Ripper, but simply cannot say for sure. Unless there are more viable clues, it is likely this case will never be solved.Dying to be Found and Dying to be Found: The DASH are now part of Sound Slice Podcast Productions. As you may recall, in 2000 the Pilates community experienced a collective sigh as the Pilates trademark was litigated in a court of law. However, this lawsuit resulted in the Pilates name not deemed proprietary. Now, in 2023, there is yet, another Pilates lawsuit pending, and my guest today Mary Kelly is right smack in the middle of it. Boston born, Mary, after discovering Pilates in 2008, went on to certify through Romana's Pilates in 2016.
