We cover 2000's THE CONTENDER starring Jeff Bridges as a U. S. president sometime between 2007 and 2010. Joan Allen is a senator nominated to fill an open VP slot who refuses to address any allegations of sexual impropriety in her past. Gary Oldman is a congressman trying to destroy her during the confirmation hearings.  Does anyone actually read these show notes? Do we need to mention that Christian Slater, Sam Elliott, William Peterson, Mike Binder, and Saul Rubinek are all in it, too, in order to game some search engines? You know, for all the Rubinek-heads out there? The episode title is a BIG LEBOWSKI reference, since Bridges and Elliott were in that movie. We also considered: The Big Lewinski, Bone Allen, Capitol Gang Bang, and Hearing Impaired.  Did we pick the right one?  LET US KNOW.  Email us at fakepresidents [at] gmail.com.  We're also at Threads, Instagram, and Bluesky.

As the Patreon request month continues, Tread Perilously ventures into Warehouse 13 for the first time with an episode called "Duped." With Myka still mad at Artie for what happened with MacPherson, she and Pete are ordered to help with the inventory. It leads to a suspicious mirror and a haunted Studio 54 disco ball. But after Myka stares too deeply into the mirror, she is called away to Las Vegas to handle a couple with surprisingly good luck. Will the artifact in their possession prove useful to the entity that escaped the mirror inside Myka? Will Artie accept that Myka is, in fact, stuck in the mirror? Erik and Justin immediately award star Saul Rubinek MVP status. Justin also can't help but compare the series to The Librarians. Erik recalls the Sci-Fi Network as it was when Warehouse 13 was first produced. While in the weeds, they discuss Wolverine, season 12 Simpsons, CCH Pounder's ability to sell absurd dialogue, The Gifted, and Batman rogues Rubinek could play. Constant re-casting suggestions occur for the Warehouse 13 cast. Despite only appearing in a recap, Roger Rees gets some praise. Justin pitches a story around the disco ball and the comparisons to The X-Files and Fringe become inevitable.

Mark Leiren-Young wrote Shylock in 1996, a play using Shakespeare's controversial Jewish character in The Merchant of Venice to explore modern-day cancel culture. While the script saw productions aorund the world, Leiren-Young was wary of giving the rights away too quickly, knowing it was complex, sensitive subject matter that required an intellectual approach. So when he met the acclaimed actor Saul Rubinek, who proposed that Leiren-Young rewrite the script to tailor it to his own real life, Leiren-Young jumped at the chance. A fan of blending fact with fiction, the B.C.-based writer began researching Rubinek's life and updating the nearly 20-year-old script to match a post-pandemic view of what "cancel culture" really means. The result is Playing Shylock, running at Canadian Stage until Dec. 8 in Toronto. Leiren-Young sat down with his old friend Ralph Benmergui to discuss how this show came to life, what it was like creating the production during and after Oct. 7, and how he got his start in writing—including an early break writing an unconventional pacifist episode of the '90s CGI cartoon Beast Wars. Saul Rubinek talks about returning to his mother tongue of Yiddish for a new role

Actor Saul Rubinek was born in a displaced person's camp in Germany right after the Second World War. His Polish parents survived the Holocaust thanks to Christian farmers who hid them from the Nazis. After the family moved to Canada in 1949, Rubinek's father Israel used to blame Hitler for curtailing his burgeoning career in Yiddish theatre. That's why it meant so much to his son, now 74, to play the role of a Holocaust-era rabbi in the new movie Shttl, reciting his lines completely in Yiddish, his mamaloshen. Acting in a fully Yiddish film was a first for the veteran Hollywood star, whose Jewish credits include Barney's Version, Hunters _and _The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick. And shooting it in Ukraine, just before the Russian invasion, has imbued it with even heavier symbolism. Stttl has its Canadian debut at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival this week, and Rubinek joins _The CJN Daily _from his home in Los Angeles to discuss why filming it felt so personal. What we talked about Learn more about Shttl at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival website, where you can also attend Saul Rubinek's in-person talk about his long show business career. Saul Rubinek has had a prolific career dating back to the 1960s. He's acted at the highest echelons of Canadian theatre, enjoyed stints on popular sitcoms like Warehouse 13 and Frasier, and played supporting roles in classic films such as Unforgiven, True Romance and The Trotsky. Coming off some of his most visibly Jewish roles—a main character in Amazon's Hunters, about Nazi hunters in the 1970s, and guest spots on Jewish shows Schitt's Creek and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel—the veteran actor, now in his 70s, is taking on a more personal project. He's diving into his family history with a new play he wrote, called All in the Telling, which dissects how the Holocaust affected his family—starting with his parents, who are both Polish survivors. Until he can get it produced in a theatre after the pandemic fades away, Rubinek is previewing parts of it himself, for Canadians for the first time, at a virtual Kristallnacht memorial event being put on by the Centre for Holocaust Education and Scholarship in Ottawa. He joins today to discuss his inspiration and process in telling this delicate story for the first time. From 2010: A year ago, I invited actor Saul Rubinek to be a guest on this show, not because he was one of the leads on a new SyFy network show called “Warehouse 13”—who knew what the hell that would be about?—but because he was Saul Rubinek, actor and writer. This year, make no mistake, I want to talk to him about "Warehouse 13." Funny how nobody’s talking about the network’s spelling anymore, just about its remarkable shows.

From 2009: Artie Nielsen is waiting for you. Artie, you see, is the curator of "Warehouse 13," the place where America’s greatest secrets are housed, its mysteries answered, its riddles questioned. It’s sort of the meeting of the TV show “The X-Files” and the Nicholas Cage movie, National Treasure, a place that will challenge your imagination and probably tickle your funny bone on occasion. But don’t take my word for it. Artie is played by esteemed character actor Saul Rubinek, who joins us now.

Today's Guest: Eddie McClintock, actor, "Warehouse 13" Eddie McClintock was one of those guys who showed up on a lot of TV shows over the years without finding a permanent place to nest and spread his wings—that is, until SyFy chose him to star opposite Joanne Kelly in its signature series, Warehouse 13. The show debuted last summer to high expectations and it quickly delivered, giving the channel’s new spelling of its name a boost and launching a growing fan base for Warehouse 13’s leads, McClintock and Kelly. Tonight, Warehouse 13 returns at 9 p.m. for the opening salvo of its second season on SyFy. But enough about the show. Let’s talk about Eddie McClintock, professional tweeter or twittererererr… This is a man who appreciates the turn his life has taken and isn’t afraid to blurt it out. To wit: “Just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who has helped make #WAREHOUSE13 a dream come true for me. now...LET'S KICK SOME ASS!! –Eddie” (8 AM Jul 6th) This is also where we can learn what song Eddie is whistling—yesterday, it was “Killer Queen”—or that the cast and crew saw the season two premiere in a real theater, which made us all envious! Eddie McClintock Website • Twitter • Facebook • IMDB • Wikipedia • EDDIE McCLINTOCK: "I want the show to succeed so badly that I act as my own PR person in that regard. I know I come off as, 'Look at me, look at me.' But I've got two sons at home who I need to take care of. I've kicked around Hollywood long enough; I don't want to go out and look for another job. I love my job. I'm desirous of hanging on to it and hanging on to Warehouse 13. That's why I do what I do. And... I have OCD and it's fun."  LISTEN! Today's Guest: Eddie McClintock, actor, "Warehouse 13" I’m a believer in the wonders of SyFy’s new series, “Warehouse 13.” Oh, I won’t lie to you: there were a few moments in the early episodes where my wife, my daughter and I weren’t sure how much longer we’d stick with it. The show took a little time to get its bearings, convincing itself and the rest of us what kind of treasures awaited the patient. But over the course of its last four or five weeks, “Warehouse 13"—the place where America’s greatest secrets are housed, its mysteries answered, its riddles questioned—has captured our loyalty and respect. EDDIE McCLINTOCK podcast excerpt: "Any show needs to find out what it is. Until the actors can get to know who their characters are and who they are to one another, it takes a little while. Take any good show—go back and watch Frasier, Friends, Cheers, Seinfeld—it takes a little while."  One of the big reasons for this—according to the women in my house—is the appeal of Eddie McClintock as Pete Latimer, one half of the Warehouse 13 investigative team. McClintock’s character is part Mulder from “The X-Files,” a dash of Captain Jonathan Archer from “Star Trek Enterprise,” and a measure of the lighter, boyish side of George Clooney in the Oceans movie series. If you haven’t stepped into the Warehouse yet, take advantage of Hulu.com and catch up. The first season finale airs tonight, Thursday, September 22 at 9 p.m., and I know it will be a blast.
