FLASHBACK! We begin a two-review series on comics that ask hard questions about whether murder can ever be justified. This week, Mike Baron and Steve Rude's Nexus. Beginning in the early '80s, Baron's philosophical writing and Rude's increasingly polished art presented the story of a far future in which a man kills mass-murderers — not … Continue reading #290 “NEXUS” (Justifiable Homicide? pt 1)
In this special Mike & Mike on the Mic episode, we talk to writer Mike Baron about his creations past and present. You probably know Mike from co-creating Nexus (with Steve Rude) and ushering Badger into the world. But of course, that's not all! In the late 80s, Mike's runs on The Flash and The Punisher were legendary, and he redefined Deadman (with Kelley Jones) in Action Comics. He was even at Valiant during the heady days of the early 90s. Since then, Mike's mostly worked on his own material both in comics and novels, where he launched highly successful series like Biker and Florida Man.Check out Mike's new supernatural western series Bronze Star (with Pat Broderick) here: bronzestarcomic.com. INTERVIEW: All welcome the Dude himself, Steve Rude! If you're not already familiar with his work (really?!), start with Nexus, the long-recurring scifi series he created with writer Mike Baron in the early 80s. That masterpiece should be enough, but he also did quite a bit of work for the big two, including World's Finest, The Incredible Hulk vs. Superman, X-Men: Children of the Atom, and Captain America: What Price Glory. Steve continues to churn out art, both illustrations and painting, and promises that more Nexus is on the way!You can follow Steve on his website, steverude.com, as well as all the major socials, including @steverrudethedude on Instagram._____________________Dollar Bin Bandits is the official podcast of TwoMorrows Publishing. Our next guest is a legend in the eyes of our host...he is the co-creator of Nexus and illustrator for First, Marvel, DC and Dark Horse Comics Steve Rude, also known as "The Dude", was born in Madison, Wisconsin. After two years of study at the Milwaukee School of Art and Design, he returned to Madison for further training at both the University of Wisconsin and Madisson Area Technical College. With writer Mike Baron, he created the comic serial 'Nexus' during the summer of 1981. Steve worked also on several mainstream titles, such as 'Space Ghost', 'Johnny Quest', 'Spiderman: Lifeline', 'Legends of the DC Universe' and 'Captain America'. He received the Russ Manning Outstanding Newcomer Award in 1984, and has won comic industry awards as best artist, in 1986 and 1988 Steve discusses moving from his childhood home at too early an age, exploring cosmic injustice with the creation of Nexus, how Marvel Comics censored his work and how as a man of deep convictions he was never able to be put in a box when it came to mainstream expectations.
We're happy to have our friend Steve “The Dude” Rude back on the show with us for a deep, insightful, inspiring conversation that goes beyond comics (although we talk about those, too)! On this episode of Word balloon, host John Siuntres sits down with The Dude, Artist Steve Rude, who discusses his return to the worlds of Nexus and The Moth, in his self published line of books, Rude Dude Comics. As The Dude himself says. "I think back at that 10 period of nothing when all the (Nexus fans) kept writing us... there were so many more stories to tell. Internally I kept saying it myself, "this is not right, I have to use all skills I've accumulated my experience and clout to comeback to these characters , and bloody well keep going with them...The people who buy (Nexus) have expectations that every time they purchase something and know what (Baron and Rude) are capable of, they had better not let you down, and that's what's in my mind when I'm drawing Nexus. You're not going to feel horrible when you read my books, you will feel excited and elated and you'll want to see more."The current plan is to finish the Nexus return arc, Space Opera, then release the new Moth arc. "You oughta see what (writer) Gary Martin has planned. It's nuts!" In the interview, Rude discusses how he and writer Mike Baron got together to create Nexus for Capital City Comics, the early influences of Jack Kirby, and Alex Toth on his work, and his view of the 1980's direct market compared to today's comic book landscape. In addition to new stories revolving around his co created new characters Oragami and The Silencer , Rude also wants to bring back romance stories and his own spin on horror, in his anthology book, Amazing Dude Tales .

The podcast returns from holiday/health hiatus for a look at the year in comics for 2016. We're joined in separate segments by (01:33) Joe Sposto (@joesposto) from Longbox Heroes, (40:22) magazine contributor Matt D and (1:11:20) Al Kennedy (@housetoastonish) from House To Astonish. There's chat about DC Rebirth, Civil War 2, the Inhumans' failed babyface push and other news from the past year. Then, it's lots of recommendations about what our favorite books and creators were from the past year. There are so many quality books now, things are bound to be forgotten, so apologies to those we should have mentioned during the show and did not. We still love your work, even if our collective memories are like a new kind of Swiss cheese, Some of the books we did remember to mention include: The Vision by Tom King, Gabriel H Walta and Jordie Bellaire, Batman by King and multiple artists, Detective Comics by James Tynion IV and multiple artists, Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott and Liam Sharp, Moon Knight by Jeff Lemire and multiple artists, The Fix by Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber, Future Quest by Jeff Parker, Doc Shaner, Steve Rude and other artists, the Batman 66 books by multiple creators, Kaijumax by Zander Cannon, The Black Monday Murders by Jonathan Hickman and Tomm Coker, Southern Bastards by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, Giant Days by John Allison and multiple artists, Limbo by Dan Watters and Caspar Wijngaard, Another Castle by Andrew Wheeler and Paulina Ganucheau and plenty of other great books that you should check out to see if they are for you. We also said goodbye to two amazing books this year that ended after 50 and 60 issues: The Sixth Gun by Collen Bunn and Brian Hurtt and Chew by John Layman and Rob Guillory, respectively. Also, a shout-out to some great collections that came out this year: The return of Blue Monday by Chynna Clugston-Flores, IDW's Artist Edition for the DC War books (featuring Kirby, Kubert, Kahinger and people whose last name didn't start with K) and the Master of Kung Fu omnibuses, books I never thought I would ever see collected. There's some brief chat throughout the podcast about non-comics stuff, because we just can't stick to one topic for a whole show. We talk Marvel Puzzle Quest with Joe (our alliance leader), NXT wrestling with Matt and Chikara with Al

Internally I kept saying ot myself, "this is not right, I have to use all skills I've accumulated my experience and clout to comeback to these characters , and bloody well keep going with them...The people who buy (Nexus) have expectations that every time they purchase something and know what (Baron and Rude) are capable of, they had better not let you down, and that's what's in my mind when I'm drawing Nexus. In addition to new stories revolving around his co created new characters Oragami and The Silencer , Rude also wants to bring back romance stories and his own spin on horror, in his upcoming anthology book, Amazing Dude Tales .
