“You have a right to your actions, but never to your actions’ fruits.” - Bhagavad Gita It’s a time of year where we focus on giving. We give gifts, we give back to our communities, and we give to charities. So what does it mean to give? And why is it important? Giving is not just a nice thing to do, it’s critical to your wellbeing. We are all connected- the more you give to others, the more you help yourself. For this Five Minute Friday, I revisited an amazing conversation I had with Russell Simons where he shared how the practice of giving has made him incredibly prosperous. Russell Simmons is an American entrepreneur, record producer, yogi, and author. He co-founded Def Jam Recordings and created the fashion lines Phat Farm, Argyleculture, and Tantris. He is also the founder of Rush Communications. Russell is one of the richest men in Hip Hop, but he didn’t get there by hoarding all of his wealth. He’s learned that the more he makes the world better, the more his own world is improved. He makes the point that good givers are great getters, but you have to give fully without the expectation that it will benefit you. Learn more about Russell Simmons background and why his practice of philanthropy is key to his success in Episode 723. In This Episode You Will Learn: How black entrepreneurs are inspired by their street experiences (1:30) How integration destroyed the fabric of black communities (3:00) Why Russell loves to empower new artists (4:00) Why Russell chooses to give back (5:00) How giving will help you receive (5:30)
Russell Simmons is stepping down from his companies in the wake of an accusation of harassment and sexual assault. Simmons, the founder of hip-hop music label Def Jam Recordings and CEO of Rush Communications, released a statement on Thursday after screenwriter Jenny Lumet accused him of forcing her to have sex with him in 1991. She detailed the encounter in a guest column published by The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday. "I have been informed with great anguish of Jenny Lumet's recollection about our night together in 1991," Simmons said in a statement. "I know Jenny and her family and have seen her several times over the years since the evening she described. While her memory of that evening is very different from mine, it is now clear to me that her feelings of fear and intimidation are real. While I have never been violent, I have been thoughtless and insensitive in some of my relationships over many decades and I sincerely and humbly apologize." We will look at The View The Value And The Virtues of women

Russell Simmons isn't shy about expressing his opinion, and doesn't mince words, whether it's about Hollywood's lack of diversity, global warming, veganism, or the election. "The first thing I said is 'I'd rather Kim Kardashian be president,'" Simmons says of Donald Trump, a man he's known and had a friendship with for some 30 years before the 2016 campaign. One of the most extraordinary businessmen in modern American history, Simmons achieved enormous success in a variety of endeavors. As co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, Simmons helped bring hip-hop music into the mainstream. He later created fashion lines like Phat Farm and produced HBO's Def Comedy Jam, which helped launch the careers of megastars like Chris Rock, Bernie Mac, Martin Lawrence and many more. Today, Simmons is chairman and CEO of Rush Communications, which includes over 10 businesses and three non-profits. He's also the author of several best-selling books, including Success Through Stillness and The Happy Vegan. "The integration of culture is an explosion," he says. "It's so much fun. That's what America is about. That's where the success comes in."
Ask the world this question, and you'll drown in failure. You'll lose. Anything you take, anything you earn, will be foul. I bet you've asked this question before. Maybe everyday. Maybe all your life. "How can I get?" How can I get rich? How can I get happy? How can I get more? There's no return on getting. It leave you with nothing. Or worse than nothingness. Emptiness. But there's another way. It's simple. And it works for me I'm going to tell you how to earn your worth. It works for me. And it works for my podcast guest, Russell Simmons, "the third richest figure in hip-hop with an estimated net worth of $340 million." He gets. He told me a story. "That was my first realization that hard work turned into something," he says. "I had never been on a plane. I had certainly never been out of the country, and landing in Amsterdam they're like, 'Mr. Simmons what would you like?' I'm like, 'Oh shit Mr. Simmons.' That was a revelation. I was a grown man I could get things I wanted." But not all his life. He grew up in Queens. "Hollis, Queens and 205 Street. Frank Lucas was on our corner and so that was the heroin capital. The neighborhood went down very quickly," he says. "Obviously every kid took a lot of drugs." He was 13. Joined a gang. Sold drugs, "had some experiences," and escaped. Now he's the chairman and CEO of Rush Communications and the co-founder of Def Jam, the record label famous for spotting Beastie Boys, Jay Z, Kanye West, Rihanna and 100 others. Since 1984. I wanted to know how he got here. And how he became one of my heroes. "I didn't discover hip-hop," he says, "hip-hop discovered me." Opportunity found him. He was at the center of that universe. He grew his opportunities. He spotted talent, formed partnerships, and became an entrepreneur. He learned a lot. You might expect to hear "he hustled." But mostly, he gave back. "This idea that you have to trade with the world or manipulate the world to be successful is wrong headed," Russell says. Contribute. "If you look at your own history of success it's because you contributed to success," he says. It's works for me too. I give writing. I get readers. I give interviews. I get advice, entertainment, a network, new friends, a memory, and experiences I would never get if I didn't give. And giving can be simple. Write emails to people you admire. Surprise someone. Do something that makes someone else's life better. Give ideas. Say thanks. "You have to be comfortable in your seat, and life's only goal is to be happy and comfortable in your seat," Russell says. "From that space the universe unravels and it attracts everything. You become a greater giver because you're focused on giving and you're not fearful of the world. You become a contributor." "Anyway I'm out of cocaine now. Just so you know I've been vegan and I've stopped taking drugs almost thirty years ago," he says. That's why I got to have him on my podcast. He wrote a book, The Happy Vegan: A Guide to Living a Long, Healthy, and Successful Life. I got to go to his apartment to interview him. It's an incredible book. I learned a huge amount reading it. I'm not a vegan. But I'm strongly considering it. Listen to today's podcast. You'll get you ideas. Ideas about how to change different industries (food, farming, the drug industry). And you can start giving. You'll learn how to contribute. Give. And why it's important to your success. "Good givers are great getters," Russell says. This interview will get you thinking. You're going to learn how to "get." I'll give you the starting step. Stop asking, "What can I get?" And start asking, "What can I give?" Listen now. Russell Simmons co-founded Def Jam Recordings in 1984, creating the foundation for the musical and cultural revolution known as hip hop. He went on to form the Rush Communications empire, which included a clothing company, film and television production, a management company, a magazine and an advertising agency. Not satisfied by being an entertainment legend and a business mogul, he took up yoga and meditation, studied spiritual literature, and became a public advocate for practical spirituality. A tireless philanthropist and social activist, he became a dedicated vegan and recently added The Happy Vegan to his stable of bestsellers, which includes Do You! (2008), Super Rich: Inside and Out (2011) and "Success Through Stillness" (2014). Outspoken, honest, passionate and unrestrained, he was unique among our guests, as we spoke about his spiritual influences, the ideas and practices that guide his path, the rationale for veganism and much, much more. “It’s okay to get along with people you disagree with; in fact, it’s critical that we all try to put ourselves in other people’s shoes because I believe we all have the same hopes, desires. We are all inspired by the same kinds of things—we want to love and be loved.”Russell SimmonsIt's rare to find a pop culture icon as devoted to raising consciousness as the man they call Rush.Hip hop impresario, entrepreneur extraordinaire, devoted yogi and long-time meditation practitioner, Russell Simmons is truly one-of-a-kind — incredibly warm, always quick with a captivating story you won't soon forget and authentically committed to spreading awareness concerning important issues of our time — the horrors of animal agriculture, the declining state of human health (particularly in African American and lower socio-economic demographics) and the disastrous state of our planet’s dwindling environmental health. Most are familiar with Russell's background, but in case his name is new to you, let’s break it open.Alongside Rick Rubin, in 1984 Russell co-founded Def Jam Recordings and quickly established himself as a prominent, guiding force in the quickly growing cultural revolution that became hip hop. Championing its breakout stars, Def Jam became the label by signing the movement's ground-breaking forerunners – acts like the LL Cool J, Public Enemy, and The Beastie Boys. But Def Jam was just the first step in Russell's empire building quest. Before selling the label to Universal Music Group in 1999 for $100 million, he formed RUSH Communications and quickly expanded his reach into artist management, apparel, and film & television projects like The Nutty Professor, Krush Groove, Gridlock'd and Def Comedy Jam.Russell's current holdings include a vast array of entrepreneurial interests and philanthropic efforts, including All Def Digital, Argyleculture, RushCard, Global Grind, The Foundation For Ethnic Understanding and Tantris, a yoga & lifestyle destination currently in development. All of this is fascinating. But what interests me most about Russell is his personal journey. How discovering yoga and meditation led to his embrace of a vegan lifestyle. And the tremendous extent to which his commitment to cultivating an inner life based on the spiritual principles of ahimsa — a Sanskrit term for no harm — has impacted both his private and public life, his approach to business and his commitment to service and advocacy.Today we unpack all of it.This episode is definitely my most unique to date. Generally, I endeavor to architect the basic trajectory of my conversations; I know where I want to start and I know where I want to go. Suffice it to say this did not happen with Russell. Within the first 5 seconds of our conversation one thing was clear — I was not in control. Russell's show, Russell's flow. When the dust settled, all I could think was, what just happened? That's charisma. This one's different. But I loved every minute of it.Topics explored include:* yoga, meditation & consciousness* the karmic debt of animal agriculture* the ecological havoc caused by food systems* the health implications of the American diet* Russell as agent for change* happy vs. angry vegans* using cryotherapy to revitalize* animal cruelty in factory farming* raising awareness from the top down* the benefits of meditation* the primacy of service* parenting & privilege* the effect of branding on consumer choice* empathy and compassion for othersNote: This episode is chock-a-block with expletives. I typically run a clean, family-friendly show, but it's more important to me to allow my guests to be who they are. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
