Kenice Mobley and Alycia Cooper visit Friends Like Us and discuss the importance of understanding systemic issues in tax codes, Mayor Adam's attack on NYC Libraries, Biden Skewers The Orange man and more with host Marina Franklin!  Alycia Cooper Twenty-three year stand-up comic, Alycia Cooper, has always been a natural performer. A Washington DC area native, Alycia grew up in Seat Pleasant and later, Temple Hills, MD. She then went on to graduate from The University of Maryland at College Park with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Radio-Television-Film and a minor in Theater. While in college, she fell in love with comedy by watching HBO's “Def Comedy Jam.” There, she saw people her age who reminded her of herself performing the funniest routines she had ever seen. They were raw and uncut, but most of all hilarious. After college, she worked at BET in Washington, DC as a music television producer. Years later, after having moved to Los Angeles in hopes of creating sitcoms, Alycia tried her hand in stand-up, and was bitten by the bug. She has been on NBC's “Last Comic Standing,” BET's “Comic View”, NBC's “America's Got Talent,” Nuvo TV's  “Stand Up & Deliver,” Byron Allen's “Comics Unleashed,” TV Guide's “Stand Up in Stilettos”, “Laff Mobb's Laugh Tracks” on Tru TV, “Coming to the Stage” on Apple TV, and TV One's “Who's Got Jokes,” to name a few. In addition to her stand-up, this comedy chameleon has appeared in the number one streaming movie on Netflix called, “Guest House” with Pauly Shore, the first scripted series on Facebook, “Loosely, Exactly Nicole,” and several network television shows; including “Kenan” on NBC, “The Parkers” on UPN, and “The Resident” on Fox where she acted alongside Morris Chestnut. She then went on to appear in a string of independent films, voiced several characters in The Oscar Award winning film, “Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse,” all while having six top albums in heavy rotation on Sirius Satellite Radio and iTunes. She discovered her love for music as a young girl performing in talent shows and southern Baptist churches as a drummer alongside her mother and singer-pianist, Angela. She credits her mother as the one who helped cultivate and support her talents. At age 18, she joined the 41st Army National Guard Band where she served for nine years and ended her time in service as a sergeant. Rita graduated from her beloved HBCU, Jackson State University, with a Bachelor's Degree in Mass and Speech Communication, and pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.  After graduating from JSU she landed at Mississippi Public Broadcasting where she served as a Radio Host and Producer. In March 2013, Rita made a sharp turn and plunged into a career as a stand-up comedian. Since then, she's been featured on Kevin Hart's Hart of the City, TruTV's Laff Mobb's Laff Tracks, and Epix TV's Unprotected Sets. Rita has released three singles, “Kamala,” “Raised in the Sipp,” and “I Deserve to Be Alive”. She currently tours as a feature act with her mentors, Rickey Smiley and Cedric the Entertainer. Co Founder of Def Comedy Jam Bob Sumner sits down with the HHU Podcast to talk about his life, finding his calling as a comedy scout evaluator ushering in some of the greatest we've ever seen. Bob Sumner, best known as the co-creator of HBO's Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam is a recognized force in the world of comedy.  With over 25 years of experience, the Roselle, NJ native has discovered many of the top gifted comedians that have graced the stages and big screens around the world.  Before joining Rush Communications, Sumner was an independent club promoter for musicians and comedians in the tri-state area. While attending Seton Hall University he hosted a radio show  on SHU's  FM station WSOU, where his Friday Night Jam show called Mellow Madness was as popular in its time slot as the major radio shows  in the tri state area.  In 1989 Sumner was hired at Def Jam Recordings and in 1992 along with entertainment titans Russell Simmons and Stan Lathan, helped launch HBO's "Def Comedy Jam" which forever changed the landscape of urban comedy. He is definitely the man comedians want to know and  has helped to make superstars out of many of today's well known comedians such as Bill Bellamy, Mike Epps, Dave Chappelle, Sheryl Underwood, Chris Tucker, and the late, great Bernie Mac. Currently Sumner is executive partner in his venture Laff Mobb which has produced specials that have aired on Showtime, and most recently executive produced "Laff Mobb's We Got Next" on Magic Johnson's Aspire network. He is Curator of Comedy at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY and has served as comedy producer for such notable events as the American Black Film Festival's HBO Comedy Wings competition, Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning's "Zo's Comedy Groove" charity event, the Soul Train Music Cruise, and the Newark International Film Festival. Christina Anthony, Kenny Leu and Von Decarlo visit Friends and talk about the changing  career paths, American history, and the importance of inclusivity with host Marina Franklin. Kenny Leu is an actor, who is becoming one of the leading Asian American performers in the industry. He is widely recognized as Gohan from the webseries Dragon Ball Z: Light of Hope (34 million views). He is the son of Chinese immigrants and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he graduated from UC Berkeley with an engineering degree. After founding several startups in the Silicon Valley, competing in martial arts tournaments around the world, joining the United States Wushu team, and selling one of his startups to Google, Kenny decided to pursue film and television. He quickly landed roles on NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles and The Player, performing all of his own stunts. Kenny has since starred in NatGeo's The Long Road Home (2017), Roland Emmerich's Midway (2019), and Yakuza Princess (2021). He also was invited to appear in the popular Chinese series The Impossible (奇迹) (2019).Kenny's breakout role will be as the lead in A Shot Through the Wall (2022), which just had its theatrical release Jan 21 in North America and Jan 24 in the UK.. Kanesha Broadwater, Brittany Carney, and Von Decarlo visit Friends and talk Breast Cancer Awareness with host Marina Franklin Kanesha Broadwater, age 44, has been an oncology nurse at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago for 18 years. Her nursing skills, background in oncology and personal experience with breast cancer have given her a newfound path to help others understand the importance of early cancer screenings, even during a global pandemic. As a Black woman and a cancer survivor, Kanesha understands the health disparities facing her community and wants to bring visibility to women of color when it comes to health care. She has been working with an initiative Pfizer started called Get it Done, which encourages people to speak with their doctor about how to continue routine cancer screenings and follow-up appointments during the pandemic. Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago, Barry Brewer began his career as a stand-up comedian in 2002 when he was just a teenager. Originally getting his start performing at local churches, Brewer perfected his craft performing in comedy clubs throughout Chicago before moving to Los Angeles in 2004. Brewer's early success came from televised comedy competitions such as Bill Bellamy's Who's Got Jokes on TV One alongside his peers, Tiffany Haddish and Lil Rel Howery and Comedy Dynamics' comedian showcase, Coming to the Stage. Brewer is best known for his stand-up comedy special, Chicago I'm Home, streaming on Amazon Prime. He currently stars in Tyler Perry's Bruh and recently had a recurring role on the BET series, Games People Play. He appeared in Kevin Hart's Netflix show, Kevin Hart's Guide to Black History, as well as Tru TV's Laff Mobb's Laff Tracks and Comedy Central's Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand Up Revolution. Jessica Kirson is a powerhouse comedian known for her silliness, vulnerability, and ridiculous characters. Jessica recently produced FX's Hysterical, a feature-length documentary that explores the changing landscape of women in stand-up comedy. The documentary features Margaret Cho, Nikki Glazer, Chelsea Handler, Fortune Feimster, and other notable comedians (including myself!). Her one-hour special, "Talking to Myself" debuted on Comedy Central and was executive produced by Bill Burr. She is a regular on This Week at the Comedy Cellar, and has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The View, and Kevin Can Wait. Last year, Jessica was featured on the HBO series Crashing. She also recently acted in and served as a consultant, producer, and writer on the Robert De Niro film The Comedian. While attending Seton Hall University he hosted a radio show on SHU's FM station WSOU, where his Friday Night Jam show called Mellow Madness was as popular in its time slot as the major radio shows in the tri-state area. In 1989 Sumner was hired at Def Jam Recordings and in 1992 along with entertainment titans Russell Simmons and Stan Lathan, helped launch HBO's "Def Comedy Jam" which forever changed the landscape of urban comedy. He is definitely the man comedians want to know and has helped to make superstars out of many of today's well known comedians such as Bill Bellamy, Mike Epps, Dave Chappelle, Sheryl Underwood, Chris Tucker, and the late, great Bernie Mac. Currently, Sumner is an executive partner in his venture Laff Mobb which has produced specials that have aired on Showtime, and most recently executive produced "Laff Mobb's We Got Next" on Magic Johnson's Aspire network. He is Curator of Comedy at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY and has served as comedy producer for such notable events as the American Black Film Festival's HBO Comedy Wings competition, Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning's "Zo's Comedy Groove" charity event, the Soul Train Music Cruise, and the Newark International Film Festival. Bob Sumner, best known as the co-creator of HBO's Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam is a recognized force in the world of comedy. With over 25 years of experience, the Roselle, NJ native has discovered many of the top gifted comedians that have graced the stages and big screens around the world. Before joining Rush Communications, Sumner was an independent club promoter for musicians and comedians in the tri-state area. Christina M. Greer, PhD is an Associate Professor of Political Science and American Studies at Fordham University (Lincoln Center Campus). She was the 2018 Fellow for the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at New York University Silver School of Social Work. Her primary research and teaching interests are racial and ethnic politics, American urban centers, presidential politics, and campaigns and elections. Her additional research interests also include transportation, mayors and public policy in urban centers. Her previous work has compared criminal activity and political responses in Boston and Baltimore as well as Baltimore and St. Louis. Prof. Greer's book Black Ethnics: Race, Immigration, and the Pursuit of the American Dream (Oxford University Press, 2013 ) investigates the increasingly ethnically diverse black populations in the US from Africa and the Caribbean and was the recipient of the WEB du Bois Best Book Award in 2014 given by the National Conference of Black Political Scientists. Professor Greer is currently working on a manuscript detailing the political contributions of Barbara Jordan, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Stacey Abrams. She recently co-edited Black Politics in Transition, which explores gentrification, suburbanization, and immigration of Blacks in America. She is a member of the board of The Tenement Museum in NYC, the Center for Community Change, and serves on the Advisory Board at Tufts University.  She is also an ardent supporter of FIERCE in NYC and Project South in Atlanta, GA, and a former board member of BAJI (Black Alliance for Just Immigration), the Riders Alliance of New York, and the Human Services Council. She is a frequent political commentator on several media outlets, primarily MSNBC, WNYC, and NY1, and is often quoted in media outlets such as the NYTimes, Wall Street Journal, and the AP. She is the co-host of the New York centered podcast FAQ-NYC and co-host of the Black centered podcast What's In It For Us podcast, is the politics editor at thegrio.com, is the producer and host of The Aftermath and The Contender on Ozy.com as well as their editor-at-large, is a frequent author and narrator for the TedEd educational series, and also writes a weekly column for The Amsterdam News, one of the oldest black newspapers in the U.S. Greer received her B. A. from Tufts University and her M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University.  Subhah Agarwal has brought an honesty to her comedy that is refreshing, and at times a bit disturbing... but in a good way. Trust me. Subhah has written for "The Jim Jefferies Show"on Comedy Central, and "Comedy Knockout" on TruTv, amongst others. Makaila Nichols - At age 22, Makaila is a best-selling author of “Blatantly Honest: Normal Teen, Abnormal Life.” In her book, she shares her personal struggles with issues teens may encounter such as: bullying, body image, sexual assault, peer pressure and more. To meet the needs of her younger audience, she has also created two children's coloring books focused on anti-bullying and positive body image: "Buddies Don't Bully" and "Every Body is Beautiful." Lindsey Boylan is a political activist and leader, running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. House of Representatives, in New York's 10th district in the 2020 elections. Boylan received her B.A. in Political Science from Wellesley College and then received her MBA from Columbia Business School. Most recently, Boylan was Deputy Secretary for Economic Development and Special Advisor to NY Governor Andrew Cuomo, appointed by the governor. While there, she worked on some of the biggest issues facing New Yorkers, from helping to pass $15 minimum wage and paid family leave to developing workforce programs, creating jobs, and investing in small businesses. She also has experience dealing with emergency situations, and the economic aftermath. Part of her job in the Governor’s office was managing the Office of Storm Recovery. She led disaster relief in New York in Puerto Rico after Maria. The housing portfolio was also part of her responsibility. Robb Leigh Davis is a writer, producer, and director in New York City. As a playwright, his work has been featured in the Dixon Place HOT! Festival and the New York International Fringe Festival. He was commissioned by Brooklyn College for two performance pieces, In The Eyes of God and Intolerable, and has performed original works at conferences across the country, as well as being a selected playwright for the Tectonic Theater Project's LGBT Theater Artists of Color Training Lab. He is the creator and host of the performance series, MEDITATION ON A THEME (www.meditationonatheme.com), and the Co-host of the podcast Takin U Back, with comedienne Jenn Wehrung. Janus Adams  is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and scholar of women’s and African-American history.  “historian, producer, and publisher, Janus Adams is the author of eleven books.” She is the host and co-executive producer of “The Janus Adams Show,” and former NPR correspondent. She is also the founder of BackPaxKids, a children’s publishing company. Her work has been featured in Essence and Ms. Magazines, The New York Times, Newsday, USA Today, and The Washington Post. Her column ran in the Hearst Newspapers for sixteen years. Her book, “Glory Days: 365 Inspired Moments in African American History,” was licensed by McDonald’s and has reached over 3 million people. Calise Hawkins is a stand-up comedian and writer. She has appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Gotham Live, Stand Up in Stilettos, Nickmom Nite Out.  She has written for MTV series Totally Clueless and Girl Code, Comedy Central’s @midnight, Charlemagne’s Uncommon Sensse, Hood Adjacent with James Davis, was a cast member of Oxygen’s Funny Girls, and worked as a consultant on Aisha Tyler’s “Unapologetic”. Von Decarlo is a stand-up comedian, actress, and author of the book Speak Fluent Man. She completed two seasons as a talking head comedian on BET/Centric’s relationship-based show, According to Him + Her, and is featured on Tru-TV’s hit comedy show, Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks. You can catch her on the 2018 year-end wrap up special for CNN’s AC360. Her one-woman show, Lasagna, debuted at the People’s Improv Theatre to a full crowd and rave reviews. She is the first female to host her own show on Sirius XM NBA Radio called, Coach Von's Corner, where comedy meets sports and you get everything on and off the court in the NBA. It premiered on October 17th. Her podcast, Coach Von Podcast, is available on iTunes and uses sports to anchor into fun, yet honest, conversations about life, love, and relationships. BOB SUMNER is a comedy and music promoter, radio host, producer, and the co-creator of Russel Simmons' Def Comedy Jam. Started as an independent club promoter for musicians and comedians in the tri-state area, he attended Seton Hall University, where he single handedly took his college radio station to the top of the market ratings. He joined Russel Simmons' company Rush Communications and traveled across the country to find top tier comedians for Def Jam, discovering Bernie Mac, Dave Chappelle, Cederic the Entertainer, and Monique.  He then founded Laff Mobb, a comedy production and management company, which has produced specials for numerous TV networks.

Orlando currently tours across the country performing at clubs, colleges and festivals at home and overseas. In 2016, Orlando made his late night TV debut on the Conan show on TBS.
