At age 18, she joined the 41st Army National Guard Band where she served for nine years and ended her time in service as a sergeant. Rita graduated from her beloved HBCU, Jackson State University, with a Bachelor's Degree in Mass and Speech Communication, and pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. After graduating from JSU she landed at Mississippi Public Broadcasting where she served as a Radio Host and Producer. In March 2013, Rita made a sharp turn and plunged into a career as a stand-up comedian. Since then, she's been featured on Kevin Hart's Hart of the City, TruTV's Laff Mobb's Laff Tracks, and Epix TV's Unprotected Sets. Co Founder of Def Comedy Jam Bob Sumner sits down with the HHU Podcast to talk about his life, finding his calling as a comedy scout evaluator ushering in some of the greatest we've ever seen. Bob Sumner, best known as the co-creator of HBO's Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam is a recognized force in the world of comedy. With over 25 years of experience, the Roselle, NJ native has discovered many of the top gifted comedians that have graced the stages and big screens around the world. Before joining Rush Communications, Sumner was an independent club promoter for musicians and comedians in the tri-state area. While attending Seton Hall University he hosted a radio show on SHU's FM station WSOU, where his Friday Night Jam show called Mellow Madness was as popular in its time slot as the major radio shows in the tri state area. In 1989 Sumner was hired at Def Jam Recordings and in 1992 along with entertainment titans Russell Simmons and Stan Lathan, helped launch HBO's "Def Comedy Jam" which forever changed the landscape of urban comedy. He is definitely the man comedians want to know and has helped to make superstars out of many of today's well known comedians such as Bill Bellamy, Mike Epps, Dave Chappelle, Sheryl Underwood, Chris Tucker, and the late, great Bernie Mac. Currently Sumner is executive partner in his venture Laff Mobb which has produced specials that have aired on Showtime, and most recently executive produced "Laff Mobb's We Got Next" on Magic Johnson's Aspire network. Kenny Leu is an actor, who is becoming one of the leading Asian American performers in the industry. He is the son of Chinese immigrants and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he graduated from UC Berkeley with an engineering degree. Her nursing skills, background in oncology and personal experience with breast cancer have given her a newfound path to help others understand the importance of early cancer screenings, even during a global pandemic. As a Black woman and a cancer survivor, Kanesha understands the health disparities facing her community and wants to bring visibility to women of color when it comes to health care. She has been working with an initiative Pfizer started called Get it Done, which encourages people to speak with their doctor about how to continue routine cancer screenings and follow-up appointments during the pandemic. Jessica Kirson is a powerhouse comedian known for her silliness, vulnerability, and ridiculous characters. Travis Wolfe Jr. is an actor, known for Bob Hearts Abishola, Raven's Home, and The Neighborhood. Travis Wolfe, Jr. has been a hip-hop break-dancer since he was 6. After booking his first audition for a television news promo, Wolfe, Jr. knew he was destined to be an actor. Within the last five years, he has appeared in the series The Neighborhood, Grown-ish, Laff Mob's Laff Tracks, and Raven's Home. He danced in the feature film The Book of Henry and in the opener of the 2015 NBA All-Star game. His commercial credits include Disney's VTech toys, Panini NFL trading cards, and Old Navy. Along with his father, who is a transformational speaker, Wolfe, Jr. speaks at events and camps encouraging and empowering youth to follow their dreams. He serves as a star ambassador for his mother's non-profit, Star In You, Inc., which helps underprivileged children obtain resources and opportunities in the arts. Additionally, soon he will share information about his acting experiences with members of a youth film program in Nigeria via online video conferencing. Originally from Philadelphia, Wolfe, Jr. recently moved to Los Angeles with his parents, so he could pursue his career in acting and his 17-year-old sister, an award-winning filmmaker, could expand her production company.
