BEHIND THE MINDS is the series in Mating Matters that opens up our expert interviews to anyone who is sciencey and nerdy and curious enough to want to hear it all! Want to know more? Here it is. In this Behind the Minds episode Dr. Wendy talks to Dr. Maryanne Fisher. You heard her first in our episode called "Mean Girls, Gold Diggers and Sluts." She is a Professor in the Department of Psychology, and a member of the Women and Gender Studies Program, at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, Canada. She also happens to be a rockstar as one of the few feminist evolutionary psychologists.Think about it. Historically, most people researching biology, history, psychology (etc, etc.) have been men. It hasn't been so long since scientists acknowledged there are real differences in the sexes, and that there may actually be two sides to...uhhh, EVERYTHING.In this fly on the wall extended interview, these women talk about our man Darwin, female strategy, mate guarding, slut shaming, The Contrast Effect (YIKES!!)...and more, of course!Enjoy!Call the Mating Matters Message Line: 323-207-8277. Talk to us. Who started puberty EARLY? Raise your hand....and then pick up the phone. (Early means first in your class and enough to make you know something is different for you.)

Ken Steele continues his review of recent winners and sinners in higher ed social media, this time looking at orientation week highs and lows. It seems as though sometimes O-Week brings out the worst in students, who then seek to document their exploits on Instagram and Snapchat. In Sept 2011, it was students from HEC Montreal donning blackface to imitate Usain Bolt. In Sept 2013, it was Frosh Chants at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, and at the Sauder School of Business at UBC, seeming to advocate the rape of underaged girls. In 2014 it was Engineering Orientation songbooks that surfaced at Concordia University and McMaster. The pattern seems predictable now: outrage, recriminations, apologies, resignations, sensitivity training, counselling for upset students, and a fact-finding investigation. In July 2014, a young entrepreneur started promoting Ottawa Frosh Week Kits with hyper-sexualized videos encouraging "bad decisions with good friends" and excessive consumption of drugs and alcohol. But we did find at least one O-Week social media winner: Wageningen University in the Netherlands, which staged a student event with 1,000 smartphones to capture the entire campus for a "Student Street View". Subscribers to Ken Steele's free email newsletter, the Eduvation Loop, got access to the complete episode 9 of Ten with Ken more than a week early. For exclusive preview access to future episodes, be sure to subscribe to Eduvation's "in the loop" email newsletter, at http://www.eduvation.ca/subscribe/
Connecting The Dots - When Something's Gotta Change Maybe It's You
I had the pleasure of meeting Gloria and her husband Ricardo at the Starting Point Entrepreneurship Conference at Saint Mary's University in Halifax this February. Gloria is a remarkable young woman who has done all of the things that you are "supposed to" do to notch success in this life. Then finding that unfulfilling struck out to spread her message and carve her own path. Gloria earned her B.A. at McGill University and an M.A. in International Affairs from The University of Toronto. She speaks four languages fluently, is a regular Huffington Post columnist and a HuffPost LIVE commentator. You’ll see her in the media too, from Rogers TV to Chatelaine Magazine, Glow Magazine and CTV. Her first book BYOB: The Unapologetic Guide to Being Your Own Boss became an Amazon.ca best seller in entrepreneurship and self-esteem in October 2013, less than one month after publication. In this episode we talk about playing with the possibilities. We talk about desire mapping vs. goal setting and growth through experimentation. Gloria shares some of her habits for success. We also discuss how to overcome that negative noise in your head when you set out on a new adventure. We talked a lot about philosophy and left enough room to have Gloria back on a future episode to talk more tactical strategies. I really enjoyed this one and I hope you do too.
