A Wellington bar owner's bewildered he can't hand out pamphlets advertising his bars during O-week. Victoria University of Wellington's Students Association has complained to the council licensing team. The council has told Greig Wilson they believe licensees must not target students to draw them to bars. Wilson says he's distributed the flyers for years. "The idea is to drive students into the bars before 12 o'clock, where we can better manage intoxication control in a controlled environment and monitor their drinking, rather than them being in a flat in Mount Cook with a bottle of vodka." Wellington bar owner Greig Wilson is in a dispute with the Wellington City Council after being told he couldn't distribute pamphlets advertising his bars during O-week at Victoria University. Wilson says he's distributed the flyers for years - but the Victoria University of Wellington Students Association complained to the council's licensing team that the flyers promoted a drinking environment with minimal pastoral and safety services. The council subsequently wrote to Wilson, saying "from the inspectorates and police point of view, we believe that licensees must not be targeting students to draw them to their bars”. Wilson, who owns popular bars including Vinyl and Shady Lady, says he is now seeking legal advice and spoke to Nick Mills about the situation. Canterbury University students are being asked to return up to $2000 worth of road signs. They were stolen from the traffic management plant set up on Ilam Road during the university's O-Week. Students can hand them into the University's Security office – no questions asked – until midday tomorrow. Student Association president Pierce Crowley says they've already had a few handed in. "No judgement from us, we just want them to return them, no consequences from our side. It's just sort of in good faith." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So excited to be bringing you another conversation with an amazing Woman of Colour. Today I chat with actor and award winning, emerging playwright Kirsty Marillier. Kirsty and I first met yeaaaars ago when we were studying acting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. I still remember when Kirsty performed her monologue during O-Week and thinking, 'wow, that girl can do a great South African accent' - then I realised that Kirsty is South African. Kirsty is mixed race, coloured, and we talk about the history of that term in relationship to South Africa and her own personal search for identity. We also chat about Kirsty's play, 'The Orange Thrower', and how she uses her writing to reclaim her identity and deconstruct the relationships people of colour have with gender, migration and oppression; putting social change at the forefront of her intersectional practice. To find out more about Kirsty and keep up to date with the progress of 'The Orange Thrower' head to her IG @kirstymarillierKeep up to date with all things Black Birds via our IG @bl.ckb.rds @eeshash or our website www.black-birds.netFeel free to drop us a line with any guest or topic suggestions at hello@black-birds.netAnd don't forget to rate, review, subscribe and share with your friends :) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's a strange sight every year; one day campus is all but empty, and the next day it's bursting with life. Saturday was Move-In Day at the University of Guelph as thousands of first year students moved in to their dorms, made new friends, and got their first taste of adulting as they began their academic pursuits (whatever they may be). As per usual, CFRU spent the day broadcasting live to air from Branion Plaza, which is the open area just behind the University Centre's north entrance. It's a great perch to watch people as they head to the U.C. for a snack or coffee, or head to Rozanski Hall for some opening day festivities, or head to the University Bookstore for school supplies or a souvenir. In lieu of the usual Guelph Politicast this week, we'll replay my hour-long set on CFRU last Saturday, live from Branion Plaza, and live-to-air on CFRU. Abdul-Rahim Abdulai from the CFRU show FoodFarm Talk co-hosts as we share O-Week remembrances, changes to campus, and the importance of getting involved on campus and taking care of yourself physically *and* mentally. Along with the on-air stuff, which you might have heard already, there's some special edition material that you may like to hear as well. After the CFRU shift, I took a microphone around campus to talk to some of the people milling about including O-Week volunteers, first-year students, and at least one parent with bittersweet feelings about leaving her child at the U of G. So let's go live-ish to Move-In Day at the University of Guelph on this week's Guelph Politicast! We’ll be back to a regular episode of the Guelph Politicast next week. Thanks to everyone that gave a couple of minutes of their time on Saturday, and to those who stopped by the CFRU tent in Branion Plaza to say "Hi" or to learn about volunteering with the station. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, and Spotify. Also, when you subscribe to the Guelph Politicast channel and you will also get an episode of Open Sources Guelph every Monday, and an episode of End Credits every Friday.

Ken Steele continues his review of recent winners and sinners in higher ed social media, this time looking at orientation week highs and lows. It seems as though sometimes O-Week brings out the worst in students, who then seek to document their exploits on Instagram and Snapchat. In Sept 2011, it was students from HEC Montreal donning blackface to imitate Usain Bolt. In Sept 2013, it was Frosh Chants at Saint Mary's University in Halifax, and at the Sauder School of Business at UBC, seeming to advocate the rape of underaged girls. In 2014 it was Engineering Orientation songbooks that surfaced at Concordia University and McMaster. The pattern seems predictable now: outrage, recriminations, apologies, resignations, sensitivity training, counselling for upset students, and a fact-finding investigation. In July 2014, a young entrepreneur started promoting Ottawa Frosh Week Kits with hyper-sexualized videos encouraging "bad decisions with good friends" and excessive consumption of drugs and alcohol. But we did find at least one O-Week social media winner: Wageningen University in the Netherlands, which staged a student event with 1,000 smartphones to capture the entire campus for a "Student Street View".
