The role of the artist in the climate crisis is not simply to communicate scientific information in a sort of dressed up kind of way, but really to engage the imagination to do that thing that only art can do, which is getting at these almost imperceptible shifts in identity, in purpose and meaning, and the way that we as humans think about our relationship with the natural world and our place in it. It's ineffable, that kind of shift. If that's not the role of art, I don't know what is. Judi Pearl has been a passionate environmentalist since her early teens here in Ottawa, unceded Algonquin-Anishinaabe lands. In addition to her long-standing role with the English Theatre Department at the National Arts Centre, Judi formerly served on the boards of The Only Animal theatre company and the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres also known as PACT.Judi is also a co-founder, along with myself, Anjali Appadurai, Robin Sokoloski, David Maggs, Kendra Fanconi and Anthony Garoufalis-Auger of SCALE (Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency), a non-profit network of artists, cultural practitioners, and arts organisations committed to addressing the climate emergency. This organization was founded in 2021, where Judi was also the Operations Lead until 2023. You can learn about SCALE by listening to its current leader of SCALE, Annette Hegel, in e176 art as a tactic. At the NAC, Judi has produced large-scale projects such as Grand Acts of Theatre, Stages of Transformation, the NAC Hip Hop Theatre Festival, the annual ceremony for the Siminovitch Prize (2016-2020) as well as Family Day (2011-2015), among many others. She was also the recipient of the CEO's Award of Excellence in 2020. Well deserved, I'm sure. My first conversation with Judi (e59 pearl – positive tipping points) took place during a walk in the park here in Ottawa where we talked about theatre, the climate emergency, collaboration, arts leadership, the intersection of arts and sustainability and elusive positive tipping points. I invite you to listen back to that episode:SCALE is really trying to become that gathering place that will engender that high level collaboration, which hopefully will create those positive tipping points.Fast forward 3 years later and Judi has a new title at NAC English Theatre ‘Associate Producer, Artistic Programming and Environmental Projects', which points to her long standing leadership role on environmental issues at the NAC and in the arts sector in general. Judi's work these days has an increased focus on artistic programming such as the Irresistible Neighbourhoods, a multi-year play development project centered on themes of climate and sustainability, which nurtures both emerging and established playwrights to imagine alternative visions for the neighbourhoods they call home and I invite you to go all the way back to the second episode of this season, e155, where you can hear Sanita Fejzić talk about her Irresistible Neighbourhoods radio play Machines and Moss. When I first Sanita's play I was blown away. I loved it. Irresistible NeighbourhoodsIt was good to reconnect with Judi, the theatre producer and climate activist. I've always appreciated Judi's insights on art and climate emergency policy as well as her moral clarity, for example : What we hear is extremism on both sides, even though those extremist views are often, I think, a minority, and yet those are the voices we hear the most that get the most attention and then because of the way social media works or the media in general works, that extremism tends to beget more extremism, hence polarization just gets worse and worse. I really hope that the arts and artists can be a force to counter that trend.Judi also observes that the arts are well placed to address these wounds :I think it's vitally important that artists hone, cultivate and maintain an ability to dialogue and listen and reach people who think differently. And I think we should be grateful to Judi and her peers for working so hard to help set up SCALE and similar organizations that place the arts at the centre of the complex challenges that we face and thereby increasing their relevance. Judi's recommended readings are : Not the End of the World : How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet by Hannah RitchieFix the News by Angus HerveyNote: This document was referred to during this conversation : Walking Gently on the Land (National Arts Centre Environmental Sustainability Action Plan 2023-2026)*Sections of the episode (generated by AI and reviewed by Claude Schryer)Reconnecting with Judi PearlJudi Pearl returns to the conscient podcast, reminiscing about past conversations and her journey in the arts. The discussion sets the stage for exploring her current role at the National Arts Centre and her commitment to environmental issues.Judi's Journey in the ArtsJudi shares her background as a theatre artist, highlighting her evolution from stage manager to associate producer at the National Arts Centre. She emphasizes her deep connection to Ottawa and her work in a large institution. The NAC's Environmental CommitmentThe conversation shifts to the National Arts Centre's environmental policies, including their new strategic plan and sustainability action plan. Judi discusses the importance of setting targets for waste, energy, and artistic programming.Creative Green Tools and Climate AwarenessJudi and Claude elaborate on the Creative Green Tools in Canada and their relevance to measuring the environmental impact of the arts. Judi highlights the importance of raising awareness and establishing baselines for carbon footprints within institutions.Irresistible Neighbourhoods: A New Artistic InitiativeThe focus shifts to Judi's artistic work at the NAC, particularly the ‘Irresistible Neighbourhoods' project. She explains how this initiative aims to explore neighbourhoods through a climate lens, involving emerging playwrights in the creative process. The Role of Climate DramaturgyJudi discusses the innovative concept of climate dramaturgy, introduced by Vicki Stroich, and its significance in shaping narratives around environmental issues. This approach encourages playwrights to imagine futures for their neighbourhoods beyond dystopian themes.Integrating Music and TheatreAs the conversation continues, Judi shares insights on the integration of music and theatre in the second volume of ‘Irresistible Neighbourhoods.' She highlights the collaborative process between composers and playwrights to create a unified artistic vision.Art's Potential for Cultural ShiftJudi reflects on the power of art to influence societal attitudes and values, drawing parallels with historical movements. She argues that cultural shifts are essential for driving political and economic change, particularly in the context of climate action.Facing the Future: The Role of ArtsAs we confront the uncertainties of the future, the conversation shifts to how the arts can play a pivotal role in addressing societal challenges. The discussion highlights the potential for the arts to foster resilience and adaptation in communities facing resource scarcity and climate change.Bridging Divides: The Power of DialogueThe dialogue emphasizes the importance of engaging with differing perspectives in an increasingly polarized world. Artists are encouraged to cultivate the ability to listen and connect with those who hold contrasting views, fostering a more inclusive discourse.Navigating Modernity: A Call for OpennessThe conversation delves into the complexities of modernity and the need for new visions as societal structures evolve. The speakers advocate for open dialogue and collaboration to address pressing issues, highlighting the potential of community-engaged arts.Finding Hope Amidst ChallengesAs the discussion turns to the media's portrayal of current events, the speakers reflect on the necessity of sharing positive stories that inspire action and change. They recommend resources that highlight impactful initiatives and encourage a more balanced view of the world's progress.Joy in the Everyday: Celebrating Small WinsJudi shares personal moments of joy and gratitude, emphasizing the importance of recognizing positive aspects in life amidst challenges. They reflect on the significance of community and the arts in fostering connection and hope. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). "If we're not having fun, we need to stop doing it." —Nicholas Kheny "Work with people only bigger than you and you become a company of giants." —Mike Schanbacher When it comes to candy, the word "healthy" might not immediately come to mind. However, with the rise of vegan lifestyles, there is an increasing demand for plant-based alternatives, including vegan candy. Vegan candy delivers a guilt-free indulgence, without compromising on taste. These candies are often made with natural flavors and colors derived from fruits and vegetables, making them a more wholesome option that aligns with your healthy choices. Blobs is a better-for-you candy brand founded in 2020 by childhood friends Mike Schanbacher and Nicholas Kheny. The company creates vegan, low-sugar gummy candies that aim to provide an accessible and fun candy option for health-conscious consumers. Blobs gummies contain only 2g of sugar per serving while still delivering bold fruit flavors. Their signature pectin-based recipe achieves a traditional gummy texture without the added sugar or guilt typically associated with candy. This week's conversation offers inspiration and practical lessons for anyone interested in starting a CPG business. Listen in as Mike and Nick share their journey starting the company together as friends and co-founders; the challenges of developing the right vegan, low-sugar recipe and finding a manufacturer to partner with; Blobs' expansion into retail stores; their upcoming new product launches, and much more. Episode Notes The rise of artificial intelligence has been a major topic of discussion in the travel industry over the past year. So as the theme of this month's Skift Global Forum is Connection in the Age of AI, what do major travel executives think about booming technology? Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes provides some of their opinions about it. Dawes cites Airbnb's Brian Chesky and Uber's Dara Khosrowshahi as two CEOs vocal about the impact of AI on their companies. Chesky said AI would be the driving force between a vastly different Airbnb. Meanwhile, Khosrowshahi said AI could improve user personalization by tracking preferences, such as preferred types of cars. Dawes adds that executives around travel have spoken about how advancements in AI could change travel search and booking. Priceline and Booking.com have already released Google-powered tools on their respective apps. Next, the United Arab Emirates has established a gaming authority to regulate its nascent gambling industry, writes Middle East Reporter Josh Corder. Corder notes the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority will set guidelines for future casinos as well as a potential “Arabian Strip” gambling zone. The country's media has reported the agency would look to help unlock gaming's economic potential. The United Arab Emirates could earn roughly $6.6 billion in revenue yearly from gaming, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Finally, tour operators are increasingly turning to African adventures to attract young travelers, writes Travel Experiences Reporter Selene Brophy. Brophy cites Contiki as one company that has significantly boosted its Africa offerings. Contiki, which organizes trips geared largely towards 18-35 year olds, has seen bookings for its Africa tours jump 57% from 2019 levels. Kyle Junkuhn, Contiki's Operations Lead for Africa, said its itinerary design has been a major factor in its growth. Its guests can bungee jump and zip wire, among other activities, at Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls.

First day on the job and it's much, much bigger than you were expecting, All of a sudden you got overwhelmed with the question "OMG where do I start??". Sounds familiar? Well, natural reaction is to want to deliver something ASAP to prove to your boss they have made the right decision by selecting you, isn't it? There is no better recipe to deliver something not aligned with the needs of the business, but rather with your need of feeling reassured. And when the first one will happen, the second will not. You will likely end up with raised eyebrows from your boss, and merely a ‘hmm hmm' in lieu of approbation. In this discussion, Laurie David-Henric will share her personal experience of how in 100 days she successfully positioned herself and her function as a strategic partner to her boss and other key leaders without formerly delivering anything for 3 months.

“There was just no way I could say no”. That was how Sonali Zaveri felt about working with Ideas42 Ventures, after learning about the first cohort of entrepreneurs she would advise. Ideas42 Ventures is a venture studio that aims to solve massive social problems by helping founders with lived experience launch companies that address issues like poverty and inequality. The founders are selected based on their potential, their passion, and their lived experience – and unlike other venture studios they don't necessarily need a tech background, nor even a product idea on day one. On this episode of Crafted, Design and Operations Lead Sonali Zaveri shares how she coaches these founders, as well as why entrepreneurship is such a “privileged sport” — and what she's doing about that. We also discuss how Ideas42 Ventures uses behavioral science to design products that make lasting impact and why founders should be embarrassed by their first product. This is Crafted from Artium: a show about great products, and the people who make them. At Artium, we help startups and enterprises build incredible products, recruit high-performing teams, and achieve the culture of craft they need to build great software long after we're gone. Guest Eva Hamer discusses a recent study of American attitudes toward using animals for food that suggests how best to strategically frame campaign messages promoting a path to evolving together toward animal freedom and plant-based food systems. We discuss what those new policies might be that Americans can support through collective action to get past this feeling of futility that we as individual consumers experience -- that we can't stop factory farming through individual food choices and thus need to work collectively. Host of In Tune to Nature, Carrie Freeman, interviews Eva Hamer, Operations Lead at the nonprofit think tank Pax Fauna in this 26 minute podcast. Details of the Pax Fauna study, strategy recommendations, and some video presentation summaries are found on their website: narrative.PaxFauna.org. In their name, Pax stands for Peace and Fauna stands for Animal. Pax Fauna is a nonprofit that exists to design a more effective social movement for animal freedom in the U.S., using original research as well as careful study of social movement literature and the recent history of the animal movement, in order to reverse the cultural norm of eating animals. In Tune to Nature is a weekly show airing on Wednesdays from 6:30-7pm EST on Atlanta indie station WRFG (Radio Free Georgia) 89.3FM hosted by Carrie Freeman or Melody Paris. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: December 2022 updates and fundraising, published by AI Impacts on December 22, 2022 on LessWrong. Harlan Stewart and Katja Grace, 22 December, 2022 News New Hires and role changes In 2022, the AI Impacts team has grown from two to seven full time staff. Out of more than 250 applicants, we hired Elizabeth Santos as Operations Lead, Harlan Stewart as Research Assistant, and three Research Analysts: Zach Stein-Perlman, Aysja Johnson, and (are in the process of hiring) Jeffrey Heninger. We're excited to have them all, and you can learn more about them on our about page. Rick and Katja have traded some responsibilities: Rick is now Director of AI Impacts, and Katja is Lead Researcher. This means Rick is generally in charge of making decisions about running the org, though Katja has veto power. Katja is responsible for doing research, as well as directing and overseeing it. Summer Internship Program We ran an internship program during the summer. Between May and September, six interns worked on various research projects on topics such as international coordination, explanations of historic human success, case studies in risk mitigation, R&D funding in AI, our new survey of Machine Learning researchers, current AI capabilities, technologies that are strategically-relevant to AI, and the scale of machine learning models. AI Impacts Wiki We intend to replace our pages with an AI Impacts Wiki. Our pages have always been functionally something like a wiki, so hopefully this new format will make it clearer how to interact with them (as distinct from our blog posts), as well as easier to navigate for readers and easier to update for researchers. The AI Impacts Wiki will launch soon and can be previewed here. . We'll say more about other minor changes when we launch it, but AI Impacts' past and future public research will be either detailed on the wiki or findable through the wiki. You can let us know what you think using our feedback form as well as comments on this blog post. Research Finished this year This year, our main new pages and research-heavy blog posts are: A survey of 738 machine learning experts, about progress in AI. This survey was a rerun of the one conducted by AI Impacts in 2016, and a blog post on the tentative conclusions (Katja and Zach in collaboration with Ben Weinstein-Raun) Detailed arguments answering the question, ‘Will Superhuman AI be created?' with a tentative ‘yes' (Katja) Review of US public opinion surveys on AI (Zach) A database of inducement prizes (Elizabeth) A literature review of notable cognitive abilities of honeybees (Aysja) An analysis of discontinuities in historic trends in manned altitude (Jeffrey) A list of counterarguments to the basic AI x-risk case (Katja) A list of possible incentives to create AI that is known to pose extinction risks (Katja) Lists of sources arguing for and against existential risk from AI (Katja) AI Impacts is in large part a set of pages that are intended to get updated over time, so our research should not necessarily show up as new pages, and is generally a bit harder to measure than in more standard research institutions. On this occasion, the above pages and posts probably represent most of our finished research output this year. In progress Things people are working on lately: Noteworthy capabilities and limitations of state-of-the-art AI (Zach, Harlan) A case study of Alexander Fleming's efforts to warn the world about antibiotic resistance (Harlan) A literature review of notable cognitive abilities of ants (Aysja) Review and analysis of AI forecasting methods (Zach) Case studies of actors deciding not to pursue technologies, despite apparent incentives to do so. (Jeffrey, Aysja) Strategically significant narrow AI capabilities (Zach) The implications of the fermi paradox and anthropics for AI (Zach) Wha...

This week on WIBcast, Allison Minogue will remind you never to settle. At Boston College, Allison studied Psychology and Economics and found her niche in behavioral economics in the middle. After graduation, she joined a market research firm where her academic interests were elevated in practice. She gives a deep dive into what it means to apply data to human behaviors, and we discuss how to turn data collection into applicable strategic goals through visualization and narration. We also talk about concepts from Daniel Kahneman's Thinking Fast and Slow, one of the more influential works on behavioral economics. Allison has adopted many of Kahnmenan's ideas into her own work. Allision attended Columbia Business School, and in a different view on business school than I have heard before, Allison explained that she viewed her time there as a chance to pivot. She joined McKinsey afterward. Her interest in consulting stemmed from a desire to work across industries, and the role at McKinsey allowed her to travel and develop a new set of hard skills. Now, Allison is a year into her newest role as a Strategy and Operations Lead for Google Cloud. She helps with everything from headcount and budget to reporting and metrics of special projects. You often relate to other people when you show yourself as vulnerable and fallible. In many contexts, this is even better than acting professionally. Today's guest, “Miracle Morning” author Hal Elrod, tells us that people spend too much effort trying to impress others. When you give the most, it's liberating. “You SHOULD care about what others think of you. That's your reputation.” -Keith Weinhold Once, Hal e-mailed friends, ex-girlfriends and colleagues to seek criticism about himself. That feedback hurt. Everyone wants change, but no one wants to change. Generosity, selflessness, and contribution foster meaningful relationships. I share that viewers were recently critical of my YouTube video. Hal admits that he believes that he's not a great listener. Hal strives to add value to every single person that he meets. Aundrea Newbern, GRE Operations Lead, joins us for milestone Episode 400. I'm your host, Keith Weinhold. Being a person of value and building lasting relationships often comes down to self disinterest, empathy, and connection. You're going to build not just your wealth mindset, but your skillset. It's milestone Episode 400, today, on Get Rich Education! Welcome to GRE! From Cherry Hill, NJ to Cherry Springs Dark Skies Park, PA and across 188 nations worldwide, you're listening to one of America's longest-running and most-listened to shows on real estate investing. That's our major so to speak… with minors in economics and wealth mindset. I'm your host, Keith Weinhold. You probably know that after 400 episodes. Today's guest doesn't often do podcast conversations like this. But GRE's Operations Lead, Aundrea introduced me to “Miracle Morning” author Hal Elrod last year. So Hal is standing by, and then, a bonus, as Aundrea joins me near the end of the show today as well. Yeah, so here on milestone Episode 400, there aren't any balloons falling out of the sky or anything. It's an opportunity to expand your thoughts & mindset & skillset in a different direction that should benefit you both within real estate investing & your broader life outside of it - from relationships with your real estate agent to your spouse. In human relations, more than ever, people relate more to you as a vulnerable and even fallible person than they do as one that acts strictly like a professional in a lot of circumstances. The best way to show others in a business relationship (that you don't know very well) that you're a real human being & that loosens up both of you & make you laugh is when you go out of your way to point out that when you left home this morning… you've got mismatched socks on… and you make some joke about it… something innocuous yet relatable like that. Then there's handling ego and criticism in a way that makes you endearing and empathetic. And by the way, the definition of empathy is “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person.” Now, we get overwhelmingly positive feedback and comments about the show here… and I am grateful to you for that, whether it's through Apple Podcasts reviews, or where you can always reach out if you've got a question or concern or suggestion at GetRichEducation.com/Contact… or increasingly, we get more & more comments from you on our Get Rich Education YouTube Channel. There is a rather robust comments section there… … and there's one popular video that we have over there. It has more than 100,000 views and a lot of “Likes” and “Comments”. And I was rather criticized for how I handled this video - it was an interview. Now, it was the type of video that crossed over, it didn't bring in our usual real estate investor crowd. It was kind of a hybrid crowd of geography & real estate. And, again, we get overwhelmingly positive feedback here. But the nice remarks aren't where you get the lessons, so… I got dozens of critical comments on this video… and these commenters were clearly critical of the way that I handled the interview. It wasn't the guest. Comments were rather disparate. Some said that I brought no value to that interview - I was the host with a fairly prominent guest. Others said that I talked too much, some said I talked too little, it just seemed like I couldn't do anything right with that crowd. Now, one way that I could have handled it is set a policy here that any negative comments have to be deleted. We could have just deleted them all. Well, I don't want to do that. You can disagree. In fact, some say that a disagreement is actually the start of a great conversation. We could go in there & reply and tell the commenter that they're being dumb or say something else disparaging. Here's how I handled it once I learned about this. I went into the YouTube comments myself, read a bunch of the criticism, and made individual responses to a bunch of them. My response was something like: Hey, thanks for the feedback. Others seem to take exception to this material too. It is probably in my best interest to read all of these comments, see what I can learn from this, and I've got to do better next time. I have clearly disappointed a lot of people. That was my response. Something like that. Well, what did that do… it appeared to engender… empathy, really. Some of the detracting commenters then came back to me & said, “Aw, you know, that wasn't so bad. I don't think there's much that you need to change. I still learned a lot from your video.” See, when I showed the world that I'm listening and that I'm a fallible human being, just like we all are, sometimes it makes the critic come back and sort of repent or even reconsider. Next week, here on the show, “International Man” Doug Casey & I are going to discuss economics and what he thinks the prospects of entering what he calls “The Greater Depression” are. Today, Hal Elrod & I on how you can be a person of value and build meaningful relationships…
