Wearable devices, such as the Nike Fuel Band and the Samsung Galaxy Gear are manufacturer driven products that do not yet address any major functions better than a smartphone. So far, only fitness tracking devices are driving sales as they serve a practical and motivational purpose. Other devices such as the Galaxy Gear suffer from poor aesthetics and bulky design. Until Apple releases its highly anticipated watch, which has the potential to disrupt the industry in the same way that the iPhone did, many manufacturers of electronics and watches are adapting a wait-and-see approach.

"Post-Thanksgiving Lethargy" CONTENT ADVISORY: NSFW language, unless you work in a cool place where they don't mind a lot of swearing and southern accents. We nearly fell victim to a two-pronged attack of post-holiday ennui and technical difficulties, but we have emerged victorious! There are some hiccups in audio quality for which we apologize, but surely you'll still find this episode to be eminently listenable. Some of you may (have) arrive(d) here after seeing our web address before the GOJIRA screening at The Carolina Theatre on December 6. If so, welcome! We hope you'll stick around. We're playing some catch-up in this episode, covering recent news items about Nintendo, MAN OF STEEL, the Samsung Galaxy Gear, the Disney/Marvel/Netflix deal, and the release date for Star Wars: Episode VII. Enjoy! Check us out on the web for news, links, and extended show notes:

Fingerprint scanners are all well and good, but what happens when someone decides to lift that print for his own nefarious purposes? Benchmark results are important to some folks out there, but what good are they when major manufacturers repeatedly cheat the system? And the rumored HTC One Max looks to be a beast of a device ... but what exactly it being built to compete with? Those are the highlights from the news of the week and letters from the listener mail bag for the week ending October 4, 2013. All that -plus Brandon Miniman's first thought thread in quite some time- awaits you in the ninety minutes ahead on episode 064 of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast. We've been bringing you our best quality mobile-tech podcast once a week for over a year now, and we're not about to break that streak on one of the biggest tech weeks of the year. Sure, we might've missed our usual Wednesday/Thursday time slot, and we might've even technically missed the weekend dividing line, depending on what time zone you're in - but you know what? We've just capped off four days of intense video coverage with a midnight podcast from one of the most echo-filled hotel rooms in all of Berlin, and we're uploading it through the technological equivalent of a 1999-era AOL dialup line. So you're just gonna have to cut us some slack on this one, folks. Fortunately, your sacrifice will not go unrewarded. The 60th episode of our mobile technology podcast covers all the new hotness that dropped at this year's IFA trade show here in Germany, from the stitched-leather Galaxy Note line and its strange wristborne companion, to the artist formerly known as Honami, to the new tablets out of Toshiba, Sony, and LG. We even get into a bit of talk surrounding Acer's new Liquid S2 beast and a Pebble competitor out of Switzerland, before delving into the popular topic of how it feels to cover a major tech show - and how difficult that becomes when you don't have a reliable web connection. Sound like something you could put your ears on? Good - because like a bratwust drowned in semf and served on some fine kasebrot, episode 060 of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast is (finally) ready for your ingestion. We cover the new Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Is this a keeper, or another pathetic attempt to jumpstart a market that has yet to show potential? We'll also cover the possibly desperate decision of Microsoft to acquire Nokia's handset division. Will this move help the failing Windows Phone mobile OS gain a decent share of the smartphone market? Along to talk discuss these issues are Adam Engst, of TidBITS and Take Control Books, who will also talk about a compelling eBook his company just published, entitled "Take Control of Your Online Privacy." We'll also be joined by Macworld's "iTunes Guy," Kirk McElhearn.
