With more than 4.6 million establishments, 55 million jobs and $5.3 trillion in annual sales, the US retail industry is vital to the economy and daily life. As a prime target for crime, its protection is essential. Fortunately, the same problem-solving abilities and technological innovations that drive retail success are also safeguarding people and property. In the latest episode of Connect, we sit down with Dr. Read Hayes, a criminologist and research scientist at the University of Florida, as well as Executive Director of the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC). With years of experience as a researcher and former security practitioner, Dr. Hayes shares his unique perspective on what retailers can do to keep themselves and their customers safe.Together, we explore how retailers are utilizing various methods - from traditional approaches to cutting-edge AI innovations - to enhance retail security and operations. Dr. Hayes delves into the LPRC's pioneering research and the "double bowtie" theory, illustrating the trajectory of a crime. He also shares real-world examples of successful partnerships between retailers, law enforcement, and technology providers. Additionally, we discuss how the CRAVE model helps security professionals understand offender motivations, enabling them to better defend against harm.Whether you're a retailer, security professional, or simply interested in the intersection of technology and security, this episode offers valuable insights and practical advice for staying ahead of the threats facing the retail industry today. On this episode of The Construction Record Podcast, digital editor Warren Frey speaks with Wayne Dorris, the cybersecurity program manager for the Americas for Axis Communications about some of the pitfalls and vulnerabilities construction firms face as they defend themselves against cyberattacks. Dorris pointed out that construction firms are usually victims of cyberattacks because they are a route into other systems, and smaller sub-contractors in particular are vulnerable because they often lack the resources of capabilities to repel attacks. He also pointed to procurement as a focus for cyber criminals since some procurement protocols require local firms to work on projects and they can be points of vulnerability compared to large enterprise firms. Dorris recommended the U.S. Department of Defense's CMMC cybersecurity framework as well as the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's guide to getting started with cybersecurity. In our news segment Warren also points out some of the top stories on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce, including Daily Commercial News staff writer Don Wall's piece about the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum expanding its advocacy mandate, staff writer Angela Gismondi's story about a new development called Thornbury Acres that combines farming and condo living, and Journal of Commerce staff writer Evan Saunders story about a new aquatic centre in Burnaby, B.C. budgeted at $187 million. The big ISC West security tradeshow in Las Vegas is around the corner, and we have one of the leading video surveillance providers on this week's CE Pro Podcast to walk us through technologies, applications, trends and more. Fredrik Nilsson, VP of the Americas at Axis Communications, joined me for a conversation last summer that is still very relevant today for custom integrators in the security market.Axis is based in southern Sweden, where Nilsson hails from originally, though for two decades he's called the Boston area home, near the company's North American HQ in Chelmsford, Mass. The company was founded 40 years ago, back in 1984, and by 1996 had invented the IP network camera, originally more for web monitoring use, Nilsson says. It began seeing more security usage for the technology and now 25+ years later Axis is a global leader in both IP network cameras and overall video surveillance cameras for security.
