Should a Harvard education prepare you for failure?Should failure be normalized in the course of higher education?Or at the very least, would you want to learn how to take or talk about failure? Those are the sort of questions rarely asked if you're a Harvard student who is used to acing your exams, winning accolades or top awards until one day – you suddenly lose what you've been taking for granted. In “Where Are They Now?” Episode #4, Gemma Schneider (Harvard student journalist/Class of 2023) interviews Sangu Delle (Harvard Class of 2010, Harvard JD & MBA 2016).  An entrepreneur, investor, author and philanthropist, Sangu speaks powerfully about his personal struggle with depression after a major business investor died suddenly before wiring the money. A lot were at stakes. Sangu was at a loss for words and found himself in a dark world for a long time before getting back on his feet. Today, he is a champion for mental health and a vocal teacher about the norm of failure. I am happy to be co-hosting this podcast as a contributing commentator. Sangu Delle is an entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, and author who graduated from Harvard College in 2010 and received his JD and MBA from Harvard in 2016. Back in college, Sangu founded the water and sanitation non-profit Cleanacwa. Shortly thereafter, he started Golden Palm Investments (GPI), an investment holding company that builds world class technology companies across the African continent. Sangu is also the CEO of Africa Health Holdings and the author of “Making Futures,” a book about young entrepreneurs doing game-changing work in Africa.In this conversation, Sangu and Gemma unpack the invigorating and rewarding nature of Sangu's early business ventures as a student, and of his more recent philanthropic projects on the African continent. They also talk about the trials and tribulations of entrepreneurship – about disappointment, and about the very real toll that hard work and high expectations can have on our mental health. In this episode, we sat down with Sangu Delle, the Chairman and CEO of Africa Health Holdings. Africa Health Holdings is focused on building a sustainable healthcare ecosystem in Africa through its network of healthcare facilities that it owns and manages. To date, Africa Health Holdings portfolio companies have served over 510,000 patients through malaria treatment, family planning, community outreach programs, and more. Africa Health Holdings currently has 40 facilities across Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana serving 200,000 patients every year. What we discussed: From a young age, Sangu Delle developed a pan-African consciousness and the desire to create sustainable and positive change in Africa in part from early exposure to African refugees through his doctor and human rights activist father. Given the disproportionate disease burden the African continent faces and the brain drain of Africa-born healthcare workers practicing outside of Africa, Africa faces large gaps in healthcare. The private sector must supplement fiscally-constrained African governments to improve healthcare access, quality, and affordability. Africa presents an attractive investment opportunity given secular population growth in the region outpacing every other country in the world. Investments in Africa have picked up traction recently through major funding for African startups such as FlutterWave, and the acquisition of Nigeria-based payments startup Paystack by Stripe.

My guest today is Sangu Delle. Sangu is an entrepreneur, an investor, author, and someone who is deeply rooted in Pan-African ideology. His latest book Making the futures: Young entrepreneurs in a dynamic Africa explored similar themes and topics that I've often explore on this podcast. So it's not surprising that we started the conversation in this episode talking about the book. We discussed the challenges and opportunities of building a business in Africa. We also deep-dived into the competitive advantage of raising capital and having a longer runway as a startup, the outsized importance of foreign venture capital in African early-stage businesses and the role of government in facilitating a successful startup ecosystem. When stress got to be too much for TED Fellow Sangu Delle, he had to confront his own deep prejudice: that men shouldn't take care of their mental health. In a personal talk, Delle shares how he learned to handle anxiety in a society that's uncomfortable with emotions. As he says: "Being honest about how we feel doesn't make us weak -- it makes us human."

In this short, provocative talk, financier Sangu Delle questions whether microfinance — small loans to small entrepreneurs -- is the best way to drive growth in developing countries. "We seem to be fixated on this romanticized idea that every poor person in Africa is an entrepreneur,” he says. "Yet, my work has taught me that most people want jobs.” Delle, a TED Fellow, makes the case for supporting large companies and factories — and clearing away the obstacles to pan-African trade.
