Apologies if anyone feels like I'm making too big of a deal about all of this, but you have to understand that this diagnosis changes EVERYTHING for me! It feels like a 43yr chapter of my life has ended and a new chapter of greater clarity, optimism, self-love, and opportunity has begun. It simply means that much to me, gang! I promise that I won't keep talking a ton about it for the rest of time - or if I do, I will do so on a separate program dedicated specifically to the subject, but I do beg you to bear with me for now, while this is all still so new for me. :-) Also, another “flip-side of the coin” situation between this and C1E79, which didn't get discussed in the episode: In a certain manner of speaking, each episode are “the first episode ever to be produced in Fedora”. The mic time on both episodes were done on “the Big Rig”, which is running Arch-Based “Garuda KDE Dr460nized”, but the rest of the production was done on laptops. In the case of C1E79, the main laptop (which had been running Arch-based Endeavor OS [KDE] at the time) was out of commission awaiting a motherboard replacement, so all the production had to be done on one of my backup laptops, where I had just so happened to be “auditioning” Fedora 38 (Gnome) at the time. I ended up liking it so much that once the main laptop was repaired, I ended up replacing Endeavor with Fedora 38 (Gnome) - which was where all the production of this episode (minus the mic-time) happened. So, in a certain manner of speaking, both episodes were a “first time on Fedora” situation. Also, just as Arch-based Linux supplanted Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based distros, I feel like Fedora and Fedora-based is what is next to supplant Arch. Also, I think it's official: I'm a Gnome convert. My “KDE-first” days indeed appear to be over for the time-being at least. I've even since replaced Garuda KDE Dr460nized with Garuda Gnome, but not until after all the mic recordings had been completed.] Links to Autism tests - again, DO NOT take these test results as a SUBSTITUTE for a formal diagnosis by a trained professional. On the other hand, these tests are VERY reliable, so if they do indicate you have autism, you very likely do. Therefore, the advice of St. John is to take the test results and find a professional with whom you can show and discuss them: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17a6jSemcC5LO_HDqjB8iGHQcsJCMmr-1/view?usp=drive_link Links to Autism / ADHD / AuDHD YouTube videos mentioned in the episode (as well as a few others added later - such as Illymation, Savannah Brown, Not Your Average Zebra, Proudly Autistic, and Kaelynnism). Chase O'Donnell is hilarious, and her Instagram series of reels "If Musicals Were Real" is amazingly entertaining. Chase has been in "the biz" for quite some time. Chase grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles, started dancing at a young age, and made appearances on hit shows, including "Judging Amy."As Chase grew, she knew she wanted to make people laugh and pursued a career in standup comedy. Along the way, Chase wrote a play called "Too Blondes," in which she and Savannah Brown starred and received rave reviews. Feeling the call for home Chase went back west, kept doing standup comedy, and was fortunate (but also worked hard) to connect with Christina P., who is acting as a mentor in many ways.Chase is now opening for Christina P. on a national comedy tour, and now Chase has her very own comedy special coming out. Chase's special is called "People Pleaser" and will be released on YouTube on February 2, 2023.It was a pleasure to meet and talk with Chase, and I look forward to watching her continued success.Follow Chase on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/chase_odonnell/ and check her website out at http://chaseodonnell.com/Thank you for listening, subscribing, and sharing the KEV Talks Podcast. One of the biggest obstacles to starting this podcast was overcoming the fear that what I made wouldn't live up to the final product that I had envisioned. There's this Ira Glass quote that articulates it well: “Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” Often when I go into a project knowing that it will take time to develop my skills and learn how to make my vision a reality, I feel a strong sense of resistance. A feeling that leads me to postpone, delay or try to convince myself that I don't really care. But more often than not, I really care. I've found that the more resistance I feel, the more important it truly is to me. But why? And how do we navigate this? That is just one of the few things that I talk about this month on Starting is The Hardest Part. In the second episode of Starting is The Hardest Part, I interview Charli West, a literature student, writer and the deputy editor of The Stag (The University of Surrey’s Student Magazine). We talk about resistance brain, writing poetry, university and Wattpad. I absolutely loved recording this and putting it all together and I hope you do too!
