Decoding the economics of Trump's tariffs

In Focus by The Hindu

US President Donald Trump has often said that ‘tariff' is his favourite word. Within weeks of taking office, he imposed 25% tariffs on all imports from America's two biggest trading partners, Mexico and Canada, and 10% tariffs on goods from China. Subsequently, he paused the tariffs for 30 days, after Mexico and Canada promised to take certain measures to curb illegal migration and cross-border fentanyl smuggling. Given his repeated statements that he is looking at tariffs as a source of revenue it seems like he is viewing tariffs as a permanent feature rather than as a temporary negotiating tool, as some analysts have suggested. He has also used aggressive rhetoric about imposing 100% tariffs on BRIC+ countries if they tried to create an alternative to the dollar. How do we understand these moves from the Trump administration? Won't they also adversely impact American consumers and businesses? Is the US moving away from a half-century old paradigm of open trade and integrated markets, to one of local production and protected markets? How should the Global South respond to these measures, given the disparity in economic power?   Guest: economist C.P. Chandrasekhar, Senior Research Fellow at the Political Economy Research Institute, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, US. Host: G. Sampath, Social Affairs Editor, The Hindu. Edited by Sharmada Venkatasubramanian.

OpenAI has expanded the availability of its ChatGPT app for iOS users in 33 countries, including India, where a subscription costs just under Rs. 1,000 a month. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has stated that the upcoming Digital Personal Data Protection Bill in India will bring about significant changes in the behaviour of platforms that have exploited or misused personal data, according to a Press Trust of India report carried by Hindustan Times. Also in this brief, WhatsApp is said to be working on a screen-sharing feature. Notes: OpenAI has expanded the availability of its ChatGPT app for iOS users in 33 countries, including India, Algeria, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates, TechCrunch reports. This comes just a week after the app's launch in the United States. Within six days of its initial availability, the ChatGPT mobile app surpassed half a million downloads, making it one of the most successful new apps. It also outperformed other AI and chatbot apps, as well as Microsoft Edge and Bing apps, in terms of downloads in the U.S. since its launch, according to TechCrunch. OpenAI's ChatGPT app allows users to interact with the AI-based chatbot on their iPhones. It offers voice input through Whisper, supports advanced features for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, and enables direct subscription to ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month in the U.S., all while being ad-free and available for free download. In India subscription to the paid version costs Rs. 999 per month or Rs. 7,900 as a lifetime purchase, according to the plans on offer via the app. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has reversed his earlier statements and clarified that the company has no plans to leave Europe, despite expressing concerns about the European Union's proposed AI Act, CNBC reports. Altman had initially threatened to cease operations in Europe if the regulations were too stringent. Twitter has withdrawn from the European Union's voluntary agreement to combat online disinformation, according to European Commissioner Thierry Breton. While other major social media platforms have pledged to support the EU's disinformation "code of practice," Twitter has chosen to opt-out. WhatsApp is said to be working on enhancing its video calling experience with a new feature that allows users to share their screens during video calls, Mint reports, citing a website called WABetaInfo. The feature is reportedly being tested by Android beta testers who have installed the latest version of WhatsApp beta for Android. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has stated that the upcoming Digital Personal Data Protection Bill in India will bring about significant changes in the behaviour of platforms that have exploited or misused personal data, according to a Press Trust of India report carried by Hindustan Times. Chandrasekhar clarified that the proposed government-appointed fact-check body is not about censorship but rather providing an opportunity for the government to counter misinformation related to it.

Season 14, Episode 9: When it comes to the second half of the 20th century, few figures had a bigger influence on English cricket than Dennis Amiss. But those born in recent decades might not know much of him, as a player and a personality defined by understatement even with the height of his achievements. Aggressively opening the batting when possible, resolutely defending when necessary, and going large in a way that predated Graeme Gooch's theory of 'daddy hundreds', he took on the best fast bowlers of his era - Holding, Roberts, Lillee, Thomson - and found a way against the best spin - Bedi, Prasanna, Chandrasekhar. Later he ran Warwickshire cricket, signed Brian Lara, was a national selector and held senior positions at the English board. Quite the CV for a Birmingham lad who grew up working at the family tyre shop around the corner from Edgbaston. Just after his 80th birthday, in the Midlands sunshine, Dennis is as chipper as ever. Amazon to integrate logistics network, SmartCommerce with ONDC; Ericsson lays off 8,500 staff

Amazon announced on February 24 that it will integrate its logistics network and SmartCommerce, a suite of SaaS products built on Amazon Web Services, with the government of India-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Ericsson has announced the largest layoff in the telecom sector in the current economic slowdown, Reuters reports. Also in this brief, Nokia has announced the G22 – a smartphone with a backplate made from recycled plastic that can be removed easily for DIY repairs; and the latest on how India is stepping up its semiconductor efforts. Notes: Amazon will integrate its logistics network and SmartCommerce, a suite of SaaS products built on Amazon Web Services, with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), the open networks-based ecommerce protocols backed by the Indian government. “This will be Amazon's initial collaboration with ONDC as we continue to explore other potential opportunities for stronger integration between the two in future,” the company said in a press release on Feb. 24. In some smartphone news, Nokia has designed one of its next phones to make it easy for repairs, with a design that harkens back to the early years of mobile phones. The Nokia G22, developed by Finnish manufacturer HMD Global, is a standard smartphone with a 6.5-inch screen and a 50-megapixel main camera, but it's the phone's outer shell and insides that make it special, CNBC reports. The handset includes a recyclable plastic back which can be easily removed to swap out broken components, according to CNBC. With tools and repair guides from hardware repair advocacy firm iFixit, a user can remove and replace the phone's cover, battery, screen and charging port. More on Scandinavia, Telecom equipment maker Ericsson will lay off 8,500 employees globally as part of its plan to cut costs, Reuters reported on Feb. 24, citing a memo sent to employees and seen by the news agency. While technology companies such as Microsoft, Meta and Google have laid off tens of thousands of employees citing economic conditions, Ericsson's move would be the largest layoff to hit the telecoms industry, according to Reuters. In some semiconductor industry news, India's minister of state for electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said last week that India Semiconductor Research Centre (ISRC), a private, industry-led research centre, will soon be launched and the existing Semiconductor Laboratory is being modernised and pivoted into a research fab that will be co-located with the ISRC. The minister was speaking at the opening of the second Semicon India FutureDESIGN Roadshow, on Feb. 24, in Bengaluru. The Government plans to introduce an educational curriculum as part of the Future Skills programme, Chandrasekhar said. “It has been developed in collaboration with industry experts and academics. A large number of colleges will have new degrees, new electives, and new certification programs in VLSI.” “We are actively working with fab companies to create on-the-job training type of internships for students in the semiconductor space,” he said, according to a government press release.

In this episode of BackTable ENT, Dr. Shah and Dr. Agan interview Dr. Sujana Chandrasekhar, a private practice neurotologist, about diagnosis and treatment of patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). --- CHECK OUT OUR SPONSOR Cook Medical Otolaryngology https://www.cookmedical.com/otolaryngology --- SHOW NOTES First, Dr. Chandrasekhar explains the formal definition of sudden hearing loss, which is a loss of 30 dB over 3 consecutive frequencies over 72 hours, and notes that it is usually unilateral. She explains that the time from hearing loss presentation to ENT referral is usually delayed, as many patients attribute their hearing loss to a cold, the flu, or allergies. Frequently, they are also told over phone to take nasal sprays or prescribed amoxicillin. However, severe / profound hearing loss with or without tinnitus and vertigo necessitates immediate ENT consultation. Upon initial presentation, she usually gets a thorough health history, review of systems, and medication list from the patient. Common causes of SSNHL include: pregnancy and other thrombotic states, stroke, injected or intravenous drugs, high dose aspirin, PDE-5 inhibitors, and COVID-19 infection. She also describes how she uses the physical exam to distinguish between conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. First, she checks the outer ear and visualizes the tympanic membrane to look for external pathologies. Then, she utilizes the Weber and Rinne tests on every patient. Next, she explains her further workup for patients determined to have SSNHL. She emphasizes the need for retrocochlear examination to check for vestibular schwannoma, which is best done through MRI. If patients have MRI contraindications, a CT temporal bone with contrast paired with auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing may be an alternative option. Dr. Chandrasekhar explains that a single ABR test has a low specificity for vestibular schwannomas, missing up to 15-20% diagnoses. She also notes that patients with audiograms showing low frequency hearing loss have a better prognosis than those with high frequency hearing loss. Additional symptoms to look for are otalgia, erythema, healing vesicles, facial palsy, and blebs on the tympanic membrane. These symptoms may point to an infectious cause, such as syphilis, Lyme disease, and herpes zoster. Additionally, children may have syndromic causes of SSNHL. Dr. Chandrasekhar also explains her treatment options for SSNHL of different severities. For patients with mild and moderate hearing loss, she prescribes an oral prednisone taper, which patients can stop taking if hearing comes back. Intratympanic steroid injections with dexamethasone may be implicated if patients with moderate SSNHL do not respond to oral prednisone. She explains her steroid injection technique as well as tips for how to make patients more comfortable during and after the procedure. For patients with severe SSNHL, she emphasizes the importance of self-training to listen in the affected ear, starting to wear hearing aids early, and considering BAHA devices. Then, the doctors discuss the value of additional therapies for SSNHL, such as acupuncture, hyperbaric oxygen, papaverine, and B vitamins. Finally, she speaks about intratympanic stem cell injections to regrow inner hair cells as an exciting future treatment of sudden hearing loss. --- RESOURCES She's on Call Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/shes-on-call-weekly-medical-show/id1582727930 WHO Free Hearing Test: https://www.who.int/teams/noncommunicable-diseases/sensory-functions-disability-and-rehabilitation/hearwho

Almost every famous author—Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, Toni Morrison, Marquez and many before and after them—has written memorable short stories. The short story has long been celebrated as an important part of  literature, and in my view any effort to defend it as such is unnecessary. My guest today is Indira Chandrasekhar—a writer of short stories. She is also a scientist and the editor of Out Of Print, a literary magazine.I have known Indira for many years. We were in college in Bangalore, at about the same time. But the similarity ends there.Indira made something of college. She went on to a doctorate in science and became a bio-physicist, like Jagdish Chandra Bose or James Watson. But evidently, she likes what I do, more.So she quit messing with membranes and macromolecules and about 12 years ago, she started a literary magazine called Out Of Print.Out Of Print is published once in three months, online. Each issue carries fewer than 10 short stories, with a focus on writing from the Indian sub-continent.Carefully curated, every one of the short stories in each issue is a tribute to craft, skill and style.A 10th anniversary anthology of Out Of Print is available in bookstores and was a delight to sink into. As was her book of short stories, Polymorphism—that passage you heard in the beginning was Indira reading from this book.To discuss science, literature and the polymath nature of old Bangalore, it is my pleasure to introduce my friend, Indira Chandrasekhar, to The Literary City With Ramjee Chandran.ABOUT INDIRA CHANDRASEKHARDr. Indira Chandrasekhar is a scientist, a writer, a literary curator and the founder and principal editor of Out of Print, one of the primary platforms for short fiction bearing a connection to the South Asian subcontinent. Jay Chandrasekhar, comedian, actor, and director ("Super Troopers 1 & 2") joins The Brink of Midnight Podcast with John Brenkus.   There isn't much in Hollywood that Jay Chandrasekhar hasn't done. Director. Actor. Writer. Touring stand up comedian. He's also broken barriers as one of the first Indians in comedy. From his early days forming the comedy group "Broken Lizard" at Colgate University in the 90s to creating comedy film hits and cult classics like "Super Troopers", "Beerfest", "Club Dread" among many others, he's played as many hats as possible. It all comes full circle with this week's "Super Troopers 2" premiere, whose prequel originally sold at Sundance Film Festival in 2001, and returns to over 2000 movie theaters after a massive $4.4 million crowd-funding campaign.   In this conversation, Jay gets "dead honest" with the peaks and valleys of his life and career in entertainment. He shares his struggles with alcohol and drugs at a young age, how his sister's suggestion to try theater changed his life, and, rejected from all the top film schools, how he literally paved his own road in show business, or what he calls the "no" business.   For full show notes, visit: www.brinkofmidnight.com | Contact: info@brinkofmidnight.com | Connect on Socials: @brinkofmidnight (twitter, instagram, Facebook)
