Havana Syndrome has confused scientists ever since it first emerged in Cuba in 2016. The mystery illness mostly affects American officials working in embassies abroad. They report symptoms like hearing buzzing and screeching noises, and often experience pulses of pain and intense pressure in their skulls.Among other theories, people have suggested it's a side effect from some unknown surveillance technology or the result of microwave weapons deployed by foreign enemies. Others argue it's likely a mass psychogenic illness — so one that's all in the mind — resulting from stress. But some scientists think it might be physical, so there have been studies that look for signs of damage in the brains of people experiencing symptoms. Two of the most recent studies in the U.S. failed to detect any. So what or who is causing this illness? We hear from Gordon Corera, the BBC's Security Correspondent, who talks us through the some of the theories.Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld WhatsApp: +44 0330 12 33 22 6 Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk Presenter: Hannah Gelbart with Gordon Corera Producers: William Lee Adams and Benita Barden Editor: Simon Peeks

Conor Gallagher, Crime & Security Correspondent with The Irish Times, reports on internal division within the National Party and the latest on what is known about €400,000 in gold bars that were stored in a vault belonging to the party.
Military neutrality has long held an important place in the Irish national psyche with polls consistently showing strong support for the concept. This support has remained solid even in the wake of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, an invasion which caused some other neutral EU countries to seriously evaluate their security stances. In his remarks, Conor Gallagher shares his view that today, the Irish version of neutrality seems uniquely narrow and appears, in the eyes of the Government at least, to comprise of simply staying out of NATO or an EU common defence pact. However, Mr Gallagher believes that many Irish people view neutrality as encompassing something complex and ambitious, but there is little agreement on what that is. About the Speaker: Conor Gallagher is the Crime and Security Correspondent for The Irish Times where he reports on issues concerning defence and state security, including developments in the Defence Forces and the rise of hybrid threats. He joined the newspaper in 2017. He recently published Is Ireland Neutral?, a book examining the evolving definitions of Irish neutrality in the decades since independence and its future in an increasingly uncertain world. He is a graduate of the DCU journalism program and has a Master's Degree in Political Communications.

FRANK GARDNER chats to Paul Burke about his explosive thriller OUTBREAK, out now in paperback, protagonist Luke Carlton, the zeitgeist and hitting the crocodiles closest to the canoe.OUTBREAK: Deep within the Arctic Circle, three scientists from the UK's Arctic Research Station trudge through a blizzard in search of shelter. They see a cabin ahead. It appears abandoned. No lights. No snowmobile outside. But as they push open the door, the smell hits them. Rank and foetid: there's something bad inside. Then movement. A man lies slumped, his face disfigured by livid pustules. Blood runs from his nostrils; his chest glistens blackly. The team's medic, Dr Sheila Mackenzie, pushes forward to examine him when the convulsions start. Blood, bile and mucus spray into the air. The doctor knows it's too late - she's been contaminated . . .Within hours, a full-scale operation to contain this contagion is underway. Samples are rushed to the laboratories at Porton Down on high alert. What they discover changes everything. Our guest this week has one of the most notable lines of lineage we have had on the show to date; His Grandmother's second cousin was Rosa Parks! Born into a family rich in history and trendsetting, he did not fall short in carrying on his family name. He is an accomplished author & award-winning broadcaster of historical events like the Presidential Elections, Hurricane Sandy, and 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood & made history himself becoming the first African American CBS News Justice & Homeland Security Correspondent. Through all of his success, he has struggled silently for years. He opens up about his anxiety describing it as debilitating but shares that he is working on being comfortable expressing it which is something we admire! Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the BBC's Security Correspondent, Frank Gardner. For 10 years, he has been the BBC's expert on the Middle East - always authoritative and insightful, his analysis is based on first-hand knowledge of the region - after years spent studying Arabic and living and working in the Middle East. But in June last year the reporter became the news. He and his cameraman were attacked by gunmen while they filmed in Saudi Arabia. His colleague was killed, he was shot six times and left for dead. Incredibly, he survived - though with devastating injuries. Now he is paraplegic - he has some feeling and movement in his legs above the knee but none below. He uses a wheelchair for most of the day though remains determined to walk some of the time using callipers and a walking frame. Nearly a year after the attack he returned to work - continuing to analyse the terrorist threat and trying to explain the circumstances behind it - he is, he says, busier than ever.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Third movement of Concerto No 2 by Johann Sebastian Bach Book: A Passage to India by E.M Forster Luxury: A solar-powered buggy
