This is a conversation with the three esteemed authors of a paper entitled “The autocrat's intelligence paradox: Vladimir Putin's (mis)management of Russian strategic assessment in the Ukraine War. Huw Dylan, David V. Gioe and Elena Grossfeld ---------- This article argues that Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 is illustrative of this broader, though understudied, pattern of autocratic mismanagement of strategic intelligence. The invasion was both spurred and accompanied by a catastrophic intelligence failure, the responsibility for which rests with Vladimir Putin, the arbiter of a system with limited capacity to offer dispassionate strategic assessments. His failure is characteristic of autocratic regimes assessing foreign developments, including Putin's Soviet predecessors. ---------- LINKS: https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2022/03/17/putins-kgb-past-didnt-help-him-with-intelligence-ukraine/ https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/13691481241258108 https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/13691481221146113 ---------- Professor David Gioe is Visiting Professor of Intelligence and International Security in the Department of War Studies. On Dec. 5, 2016, two senior Russian Intelligence officers and two civilians were arrested and accused of treason. A few weeks later, when Western journalists were finally able to speak with the men's lawyers, they learned that the case was based on events that were, oddly enough, already widely known. This made the arrests even more peculiar. As more details emerged over time, the picture became clearer, offering Westerners a rare glimpse into the typically secretive world of Russian intelligence.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

In this episode Hawk discusses the events surrounding the release of the infamous "Access Hollywood" tape in October 2016, just weeks before the presidential election. Hawk, details how the tape, which featured Donald Trump making lewd comments about women, was incredibly damaging to his campaign and led many Republicans to withdraw their support or call for him to drop out of the race. In response, Trump's campaign worked with Russian intelligence and WikiLeaks to release hacked emails from the Clinton campaign as a distraction from the tape's fallout.Hawk cites evidence from the Mueller Report and a 2020 Senate Intelligence Committee report, both of which confirmed that the Trump campaign welcomed and encouraged the release of emails stolen by Russian hackers and funneled through WikiLeaks. Roger Stone, a close Trump ally, had advance knowledge of the WikiLeaks releases and coordinated with the campaign to maximize their impact. The host emphasizes that every key member of Trump's campaign knew the emails had been hacked by Russian intelligence and exploited them for political gain. The episode also touches on the ongoing criminal trial against Trump for the hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal. Hawk suggests that the campaign's urgency to "catch and kill" the Stormy Daniels story in the aftermath of the Access Hollywood tape was a factor in Trump's decision to pay her off. He criticizes Trump's defense attorney, Todd Blanche, for failing to effectively cross-examine Michael Cohen, a key witness in the trial. SERIES 2 EPISODE 128: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: I think this fraudulent FBI 'whistleblower' who was arrested after confessing to making up the Hunter Biden story - Alexander Smirnov - the one who admitted the story was being spread by people connected to Russian intelligence? I think he's flipping. I think there is one thin reed of evidence supporting what I admit is a hunch. Maybe a second one. More importantly, maybe, I think this man David Weiss who was - until Smirnov's story collapsed - the Special Counsel PROSECUTING Hunter Biden, has also flipped, and now intends to prosecute everybody who turned him into a Russian stooge, two steps removed. And I think he and Smirnov are going to take down at least the scum on the lower levels of the Russian Ring in this country (more likely the Russian operatives themselves, maybe James Comer, but just possibly running up the ladder to Jordan and Sean Hannity and, please God, Trump). But we're going to need a new Special Prosecutor to round all of the big names up. And a Senate Judiciary investigation on how this sack of crap was turned into the prosecution of the president's son, and the attempted impeachment of the sitting president. In an election year. At the direction of Vladimir Putin. We've been invaded again. And the Russians didn't need to shoot or bomb their way in here. Because all the Comers and Greenes and Jordans and Grassleys and Hannitys and Trumps just opened the doors for them. And may they burn in hell for doing so. Because I think Smirnov is flipping. B-Block (26:25) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Republicans select a California banker as their Wisconsin Senate candidate who's so non-Wisconsinian that in his introductory commercial he never SAYS which state he's running in. Jon Stewart is going to bothsides us into prison camps - and how DARE he attack Mary Trump. And how dare a Biden National Security Council spokesperson blame the betrayal of Ukraine on CONGRESS. It is the REPUBLICANS who did this. You are paid to say the truth - do your damn job. C-Block (33:25) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I've played this before. I needed the laugh again. It's the most joyous soccer story of all time: the ESPN Soccer Breakdown Tape.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
SERIES 2 EPISODE 127: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: I have argued for NINE YEARS that it is essential for the media to actually CALL the crazy shit Trump says “crazy shit” all the time. I have argued for FIVE YEARS that Joe Biden should CALL the crazy shit Trump says “crazy shit.” And it's like I've been talking to the wind. And then, yesterday afternoon, from the White House lawn, CNN's senior correspondent there quoted sources saying the President has directed his senior campaign staff to focus on Trump's inflammatory comments, especially “THE CRAZY SHIT TRUMP SAYS IN PUBLIC.” No bleeping, no euphemisms, she said it – deliberately. Suddenly I feel like I'm not alone! This is the easiest way to beat Trump is to quote Trump and the easiest way to break through the numb-to-it-all white noise permitting Trump to survive as a public figure is to get angry about it, angry enough for… the CNN White House correspondent to say “the crazy shit that Trump says.” Live. From the White House lawn. At mid-day. Today, “The crazy shit that Trump says.” Tomorrow… the F-word! I want CNN to talk like that, I want Biden surrogates to talk like that, I want the presidentto go and talk like that. I want to hear the phrase “the crazy shit that Trump says” said by Joe Biden in the State of the Union, right after “Thank you Mr. Speaker.” I want it to have to be broadcast 100 times that night on 100 different channels and I want to see the right wing pundits stage phony strokes and umbrage at his locker room talk because he says it and I want it played again and again and again because IT'S… THE… TRUTH! Meanwhile, in what should shock no one: The supposed FBI whistleblower in the Hunter Biden case – the man who is at the center of the James Comer/Jim Jordan/Chuck Grassley/Donald Trump smear job against him and the president? – the one they ARRESTED last week for lying TO the FBI? Alexander Smirnov? He has now told investigators Quote: “that officials associated with Russian intelligence were involved in passing” the fabrications about Hunter Biden. Dramatic, yes. Two caveats: a) he WAS arrested for lying and b) that phrase “officials associated with Russian intelligence” now applies to about 90 percent of the Republican party. B-Block (17:29) IN SPORTS: Congratulations, Nashville and Salt Lake City. You're getting major league baseball expansion teams. Unfortunately you won't be getting them any earlier than 2032, according to ESPN. And the actor who played one of the legendary figures in the legendary Paul Newman hockey film “Slap Shot” has died. I'll say goodbye to Paul D'Amico, so fierce-looking as “Captain Hook” that they modeled the comic book character Wolverine after him. (22:52) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: A Republican Florida state legislator has introduced a bill that experts believe will put Florida right-wing media out of business (thank God these people are that stupid); Senator Mike Lee's petition to get them to actually have an impeachment trial of Secretary Mayorkas earns only thirteen signatures; and Elon Musk's crapshack website bans and then suddenly unbans Alexei Navalny's widow. Well, Elmo's name does constitute half of the word “Muscovite,” doesn't it? C-Block (28:35) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Before Black History Month ends, let's take the opportunity to tell the true story of the man who broke the color line in major league baseball. He was NOT Jackie Robinson. He was not even Fleet Walker. His name was William Edward White, he played in the National League in 1879, and for whether he couldn't acknowledge his accomplishment or simply chose not to, he never did.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we're discussing the new book “Dead Man's Hand” with author, Army veteran Brad Taylor, former member of the highly classified 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta (Delta Force). This high adrenaline novel tracks: a plot to kill Vladimir Putin; a fight between Putin's brutal National Guard henchmen, the GRU- a Russian Intelligence unit and a Ukrainian hit squad; and ultimately the dangerous work of American commandos led by veteran Pike Logan. It's a twisted plot that takes us to the brink of nuclear war.As we discussed the players in the book (based on actual military/intelligence units) I asked Brad if the details come from his experiences while serving with Delta Force?Taylor also describes the brutality of Russian Intelligence forces and shares behind the scenes look at locations in Sweden and Denmark. We dive deeper into tradecraft used by military and spies around the world. And in one of the most revealing parts of our interview, we consider what these missions look like in real-life, as the President and Congress deal with deadly Islamic terror groups and the ominous situation developing with Iran.More on Dead Man's Hand and Spec Ops vet Brad Taylor here:https://bradtaylorbooks.com/ To reach CBS Eye on Veterans, Host, Phil Briggsphil@connectingvets.comFollow on X@philbriggsVet@EyeOnVeteransSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

(It also inspired the Adam Curtis docuseries by the same name). The term describes the final years of the Soviet Union when the system was failing, everyone knew the system was rotted from within by greed and corruption, yet people carried on, the broken system becoming the new normal. When our government can easily be shutdown by a Kremlin-backed, proudly fascist party, while its leader continues to call for violence, walking free after having tried to violently overthrow our government, and disinformation echo chambers on the far-right and far-left openly mock and attack the victims and targets of that fascism, America has reached HyperNormalisation. And the priority of the business elite is to protect their immorally low-tax rate and hoard their wealth, following in the footsteps of those who helped bring Hitler and Pinochet to power. Elon Musk's X has become the biggest outlet of Russian disinformation, according to the EU. That's “mission accomplished” for the American far-right and its Russian backers. Formerly reliable so-called “resistance” accounts on Twitter that once led the way combating Trump and Putin have succumbed to self-censorship and catering to Musk's oppressive algorithms like they're an authoritarian regime. This causes them to fall silent on ringing the alarm on the stakes to all of us for stopping Russia's genocide in Ukraine, LGBTQ+ rights that are being scapegoated through genocidal rhetoric, and more. You know things are bad when even Ralph Nader is ringing the alarm of fascism and wants to campaign for the Democrats! Since the beginning of the show, the focus has been on grassroots power–the most reliable power we have left. Together, we made 15,000 phone calls to get John Fetterman into the Senate, and he's leading the way against corruption and greed. And even back then, the residents of Staten Island didn't much like being forced to take immigrants who they didn't particularly want,” Anbinder told me. “We tend to idealize our own immigrant ancestors and think they're different than immigrants today. But what you find when you look at the 400-year history of immigrant New York is that every generation of immigrants comes to New York for the same reasons, has the same experiences, is hated by the people who are already in New York, and yet always they end up succeeding. And so every group is despised for a time, but every group ends up becoming an accepted New Yorker. We just forget that, generation after generation after generation.” Source:The Biggest Lesson of the Migrant Crisis https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/09/the-biggest-lesson-of-the-migrant-crisis.html
In this joint Geopolitics Decanted and Risky Business feature interview, Dmitri Alperovitch and Patrick Gray talk to Illia Vitiuk, the Head of the Department of Cyber and Information Security of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) about the cyber dimension to Russia's invasion. From turning off Ukraine's power grid with a cyber attack in 2015, to the Viasat satellite communications hack in 2022, Russia's intelligence services are world renowned for executing creative destructive cyber campaigns. Despite this, after a year and a half of Russia waging war on Ukraine its power grid is up, its telcos are functioning and its banks are still processing transactions. How has Ukraine been able to withstand Russia's onslaught in the cyber domain? Illia Vitiuk joins us to reveal insights into how Russian intelligence services are operating in Ukraine, and how the SBU is countering them.

For years, Putin has used his intelligence, including the FSB and the GRU, to try and understand Europe - what they are thinking, how they would react to a crisis of war. The failure of Russia's intelligence to predict Ukraine's commitment to defending itself and Europe's response of solidarity shows their failures. But what role do the Russian intelligence services play in modern warfare? And what does their history and growth under Putin tell us about the way the Kremlin works today? In this episode, we speak to Michael Weiss, a journalist, author and expert on Russia's intelligence services, to discover more about the successes and failures of covert warfare in Ukraine, and how it has changed the outcome of the war. So, I had to go to the Bolshoi Theater, watch this again, and again, and again, I had to do some learning to be able to talk to the guy. And same thing was happening with the art as well. so going to some galleries and talk to the people, be sure that they're using at least same terminology as they are, to be able in the future to support the conversation, be interesting to this person whom you're trying to approach." – Janosh Neumann Resources Headline Resources Russian Spy, American Defector: with Janosh Neumann, YouTube, 2020 “Almost American, 1-5,” Aftershock Comics (2021-22) Andrew's Recommendation Russian Intelligence, K. It's Thursday June 23rd, 2022, and from Chicago‘s O'Hare airport, this is a look at the information security news from overnight. From ThreatPost.comRussian APT group Fancy Bear is targeting Ukranians with a phishing campaign that uses the threat of nuclear war to exploit the Microsoft Follina vulnerability. The goal is to deliver a .Net stealer that can nab credentials from the Chrome, Firefox and Edge browsers. The group is strongly believed to be working at the behest of Russian Intelligence. From Reuters.com:Japanese automotive hose maker Nichirin said that a U.S. subsidiary had been hit by a ransomware attack that has forced it to entirely shut down its computerized production controls. The company has switched to manual production and shipping in order to keep parts flowing to customers. No word on the threat actor or malware strain. From The HackerNews.com:A threat cluster out of China with ties to a hacking group called Tropic Trooper has been spotted using a previously undocumented malware coded in Nim language. The novel loader, dubbed Nimbda, is bundled with a Chinese language 'SMS Bomber' tool that is most likely illegally distributed in the Chinese-speaking web. The Nim loader has the same executable icon as the SMS Bomber, so the entire bundle works as a trojanized binary. More details in the article. From SecurityWeek.com:A critical vulnerability in the SMA Technologies OpCon UNIX agent results in the same SSH key being deployed with all installations. The installation files also include a corresponding, unencrypted private key named “sma_id_rsa.” An attacker with access to that key can gain SSH access as root on affected systems. The key even remains on the system after the OpCon software has been removed. Details and a link to the advisory in the article. And last today, from PortSwigger.netA vulnerability in Parse Server software has led to the discovery of an authentication bypass impacting Apple Game Center. Exploitation of this 8.6 severity bug could result in authentication being bypassed by making a fake certificate accessible via certain Apple domains and providing the URL to that certificate in an authData object. Attack complexity is considered low and no privileges are required. A fix has been issued, so get your patch on kids. That's all for me today. Have a great rest of your day.
