Calmed down yet? Nah, us neither.
Have you ever realized… you might be the one making everything harder than it needs to be? In this episode, the tables are turned. I'm the one being interviewed by nervous system expert and returning guest Nahid de Belgeonne and what came out of this conversation was very refreshing, so I wanted to share it with you! We talk about stress, burnout, codependency, and the moment I realized I was taking on everyone else's “emergencies” as my own. I share what happened when my body forced me to slow down (in a very real way), and how I've started to finally calm my nervous system instead of living in overwhelm. We also get into:Why high achievers struggle to metabolize stressThe “second arrow of suffering” and how we make things worse than they areHow to stop absorbing other people's energy and emotionsMy new morning routine for regulating my nervous systemPregnancy, ambition, and learning to actually take care of myselfWhat it really looks like to step into a new chapter of your life (for me entrepreneurship and Motherhood) This conversation is honest, grounding, and deeply human. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or like life has been heavier than it needs to be… this one is for you.You can connect with Nahid and learn more about her work: https://www.thehumanmethod.co.uk/ Check out her retreat in Greece: https://www.thehumanmethod.co.uk/thesootheweekinlefkadagreece Check out my Substack: https://substack.com/@laurenlograsso

When my uncle was a small child, he once woke in the middle of the night, gripped by fear of the dark. Trembling, he ran to his mother, my grandmother, and said, “Mommy, I'm afraid.” She embraced him, soothed him, and then gently told him, “Go back to bed and remember: be afraid of nothing but G-d.”Calmed, he returned to sleep. But half an hour later, he was back shaking. “What are you afraid of now?” she asked. He answered simply, “I'm afraid of G-d.”That story captures something deeply human. We all encounter nights in our lives—moments of darkness, loneliness, uncertainty—that make us tremble. Darkness has a powerful hold because it conceals, it obscures, it feels mysterious and threatening. The mystics ask: Is darkness merely the absence of light or does it have its own substance? Either way, it confronts us and demands a response. Please join Rabbi Simon Jacobson in this fundamental conversation about facing those darker corners of our lives and discovering a profound truth: even in the dark, you are never alone. And that ultimately, darkness is the greatest light of them all.

This week, Joanne welcomes Ellen Zachos, author of 11 books on plants, including her latest, Mythic Plants: Potions and Poisons from the Gardens of the Gods. About Ellen A Harvard graduate, Ellen's first career was on Broadway (Les Miz), but the gift of a peace lily on opening night opened her eyes to the wonderful world of plants. Ellen taught at the New York Botanical Garden for many years and also served as Coordinator of the Gardening Department in Continuing Ed, before moving to Santa Fe, NM. She was named a Great American Gardener by the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival. Her 11th book, Mythic Plants: Potions & Poisons from the Gardens of the Gods, was published this year. Inspiration & Research Grew from Ellen's Greek heritage and lifelong love of mythology and plants. Greek mythology felt personally significant; she wasn't drawn to Norse or Indian myths. Extensive research across historical texts; citations couldn't fit in the print book, but are available online. Plant Stories & Mythology Connections Nepenthe (Poppy): In Homer's Odyssey, Helen of Troy prepared Nepenthe—an "anti-sorrow" drink of wine and opium poppy. Calmed grief temporarily. Linnaeus later named the tropical pitcher plant Nepenthes after this myth, believing its beauty could lift sorrow. Moly (Snowdrop): Hermes gave Odysseus "Moly" to protect him from Circe's spells. Described as a plant with black roots and white flowers—likely the snowdrop (Galanthus). Contains galantamine, which counters hallucinations—aligning with the myth's antidote effect. Modern research explores galantamine for Alzheimer's treatment. Fig: Valued food in ancient Greece, consumed fresh or dried before refrigeration existed. Special laws governed fig harvesting; penalties for theft were severe. Ancient figs required complex pollination (caprification). Some myths surrounding figs are notably "saucy." Pine Tree: Associated with violent origin myths, but also practical uses. Pine nuts were a staple food; pine resin sealed wine vessels, the origin of Retsina wine. Modern Retsina has a milder pine flavour, enjoyed especially in Greek summer settings. Aconitum (Monkshood): Misunderstood as poisonous to touch—false. Dangerous only if ingested. Blooms beautifully when few others do; it is resistant to deer and rabbits. Ellen wishes for a "Plant Mythbusters" show to debunk misinformation about plant toxicity. Daffodil (Narcissus): Linked to the myth of Narcissus falling in love with his reflection. Also central to the Persephone story, Zeus created a daffodil to lure her before Hades abducted her. Explains the origin of winter and spring cycles through Demeter's grief and renewal. Themes & Insights Plants in Greek mythology were deeply symbolic, medicinal, and magical. Many ancient uses align with modern scientific knowledge. The book groups plants thematically into short, easy-to-read chapters, ideal for bedtime or book clubs. Appeals to gardeners, historians, herbalists, and mythology enthusiasts. Ellen's Life & Work Today Now based in Santa Fe with a small, fully edible garden. Enjoys discovering new drought-tolerant plants in a vastly different climate. Former rooftop gardener in New York City; designed and maintained terrace gardens. Also teaches and speaks across the U.S.—including the upcoming Herb Society of America Conference in Texas (April). Other popular books: How to Forage for Wild Foods Without Dying, Backyard Foraging, The Wildcrafted Cocktail, The Forager's Pantry. Advocates for safe, informed foraging and appreciation of wild edibles. Mythic Plants features beautiful botanical illustrations by Lisel Ashlock. Mythic Plants makes a great gift and is available on Amazon! Find Ellen Zachos on Instagram. A new North Dakota law which went into effect on August 1 states that "every regular meeting of a governing body of a city, county, township, school district, district park district, water resource district must include an opportunity for an individual to provide public comment." Over the last five years or so, school board meetings have become a flashpoint for the culture wars and other political battles, but in North Dakota and nationally. How does the state's school boards feel about this new public comment requirement? Amy De Kok, executive director of the North Dakota School Boards Association, says she doesn't see it having much impact. "Most of our school boards have little to no, you know, public attendance on at their regular meetings," she said, adding that "a large majority of our local school boards have been providing this opportunity to their community at the regular meetings for several years, some for more than a decade." While De Kok and her organization feel the legislation wasn't necessary, she argues it does some good in that it sets in law some limits on what sort of comment can take place. "What this bill does do that I think is positive is set some kind of guard rails for local our local boards, our local school boards and cities and counties and and whatnot to make sure that they can properly manage public comment," she said. The bill allows the government entities to which it applies to set time limits on comment, content limits (comments can be limited to only what's on a meeting's agenda), and it also allows them to prohibit any speech that's harassing or defamatory. She also said that, while school board meetings have been getting rowdy in recent years, things have "definitely calmed down since the pandemic." Nick Bowry has walked it seven times, and on different routes, including when he was making the decision to give up his long-standing career to become a Priest.Joining Clare and Nick on today's walk are Nick's friends, Cat and Liz, who share their own Camino memories as they enjoy the beautiful local scenery on a fine day. They completed a circular walk starting at Nick's church, St. James the Less, taking in the River North Esk, Serpentine Wood, and views of the Pentland Hills. Presenter: Clare Balding Producer: Karen GregorHere's a poem Nick wrote about his time on the Camino in 2016:Santander a Muxia, Camino 2016Come, it's been a while, And walk, talk, sing, and pray, My way, your way, our way, In silence, in company, together, apart, each day, Never lonely, I'm pleased to say, One foot in front of the other.Consciously clearing clutter from my mind, Allowing time to forgive, seventy times seven and once again, Making friends with myself and letting go what drains, I feel my load lighten, less and less remains, New days dawn and the true self gains, One foot in front of the other.Conversations words and gestures, All allow acquaintances to grow, Many mark a mile, some many more - going with the flow, Intimate confessions and burdens off loaded, I know, Now I have time and patience to listen, to help the speaker let go, One foot in front of the other.Calmed and caught in the cadence of walking, Applied compeed, insect repellent and sun cream, Mass at noon - seeing it swing - has it been a dream, Indisputably not, my calf muscles know where they have been, Now with great anticipation, mi amigo is seen, One foot in front of the other.Companions on the way, four between us, And now we start our one at last, Minding all that has gone on, the past, In perspective, in sorrow and joy our minds cast, New beginnings both, carpe diem, life goes so fast, One foot in front of the other. Conclusions - I have a few, Appreciate each day and what you learn, Make new friends, be generous but make time for yourself to discern, Invite new experiences and try them out, Now is the time, without a doubt, and… Oh, just put… one foot in front of the other.

How does Jesus approach his fearful disciples on the evening of that first Easter Sunday? Does he scold them? No, he brings a word of comfort. He calms them with the peace that only He can give. That same unending, unchanging peace is also ours because of Jesus' Resurrection. The peace that He gives us both calms our hearts and emboldens us to share the Good News. Just as Jesus calmed and commissioned his disciples, he also calms and commissions us to boldly proclaim this life-changing truth: He is alive!Vicar Behm's sermon preached at Faith on April 27, 2025.Intro/Outro Music: “Depth of Field” by David Hilowitz

One of the BEST ways to get into overwhelm is by having a frenzied mind. But how do we create CALM minds? It's partly done by creating systems, but without a healthy mindset, those systems can potentially drive us into overwhelm more "efficiently." These three a-ha moments have had a big impact on me, and I"m excited to share them today! Colossians 1:15-17 - There are at least two ways to argue for the divinity of Jesus: First, from biblical statements about His identity as the Son of God and second, from biblical statements about what He did and does. This section of the creed reminds us that Jesus did something that only God can do: He created all things. It also reminds us of the other amazing things that Jesus did that led so many who knew him to utter "Truly this man was the Son of God." A sermon by Cameron Heger. [Part 7 of our series "The Nicene Creed: The Ancient Theology of the Triune God"] Questions for reflection: 1) Why do you think it was important for the creed to mention the divine act of the Son of God in creation? 2) How does the language of Colossians 1:15-17 help us understand Jesus as both "God" and "with God" in the act of creation? 3) Reflect on the claim that Jesus is both the agent of creation and the goal of creation. 4) How did we get an image of Jesus as creator God in his earthly miracles? 5) How do we (as Spirit-empowered witnesses to Jesus) play a role in imaging His creative and re-creative power?

Message from Jaimeson Parker on August 18, 2024
Songs of Ascent (Psalm 131) - Pastor Adam Vega
You are busy. I know you are, because you are an American living in Eureka. Our busyness is often unavoidable; yet, we wear our busyness as a badge of honor. When asked, “How are you?”, how often do you hear (or respond yourself), “I am so busy.” It’s almost like the pace of life authenticates our value. But, it might be that busyness is actually the conduit for our own pride and one of the greatest enemies to intimacy with God. Psalm 131 is a simple and short prayer of declaration from the pen of King David. I guarantee that he was a busy man with incredibly weighty challenges. Yet, he penned a song that was a reminder for Hebrew pilgrims that the most important place for us is in the presence of our God, who alone is capable of doing the great and marvelous works we all need. Like a toddler who crawls up on mama’s lap just to be in her presence, David recognizes his need to get quiet and balanced in his soul, coming to Jehovah just to sit in His presence. My guess is that many of us have a hard time stopping our busy lives and chaotic brains long enough to experience the beauty offered in this Psalm. So, today we will throw out some ways we might pause in humility and experience God’s kindness.
