Around 180,000 properties in the State are still without electrical power following Storm Éowyn which caused extensive damage across the country last Friday. Tá thart ar 180,000 áitreabh sa Stát fós gan cumhacht leictreach i ndiaidh Stoirm Éowyn a rinne díobháil mhór ar fud na tíre Dé hAoine seo caite. Cavan, Monaghan, Westmeath, Longford, Roscommon, Clare, Galway, Silesia and Donegal are the areas that continue to suffer the most, according to the Electricity Supply Board. An Cabhán, Muineachán, an Iarmhí, an Longfort, Ros Comáin, an Clár, Gaillimh, Silgeach agus Dún na nGall, sin iad na ceantair is mó atá thíos leis i gcónaí, dar le Bord Soláthair an Leictreachais. The company estimates that power will be restored in many of these areas by next Friday, but they say that other areas will remain without it for some time to come. Measann an comhlacht go mbeidh an chumacht ar ais i gcuid mhór de na háiteanna sin faoin Aoine seo chugainn ach deir siad go mbeidh áiteanna eile fágtha dá huireasa go ceann tamaill eile. It is estimated that 65,000 homes in the North are still without electrical power. Meastar go bhfuil 65,000 áitreabh sa Tuaisceart fós gan cumhacht leictreach. The fact that the Electricity Supply Board has asked electricity companies abroad to come to their aid is a testament to the great work that still needs to be done. Léiriú ann féin ar an obair mhór atá le déanamh fós is ea gur iarr Bord Soláthair an Leictreachais ar chomhlachtaí leictreachais thar lear teacht i gcabhair orthu. Teams from Austria and Finland have arrived in Ireland today to assist technicians in restoring power. Tá meithleacha ón Ostair agus ón bhFionlainn tagtha go hÉirinn inniu le cuidiú le teicneoirí abhus an chumhacht a thabhairt ar ais. More teams will be arriving from France and the Netherlands in the next few days. Beidh tuilleadh meithleacha ag teacht ón bhFrainc agus ón Ísiltír as seo go ceann cúpla lá. In addition to electrical power, approximately 74,000 households are still without water supply. Chomh maith le cumhacht leictreach, tá thart ar 74,000 áitreabh gan soláthar uisce i gcónaí. To make matters worse, Irish Water says that another 70,000 properties could soon lose their water supply. Mar bharr ar an donas, deir Uisce Éireann go m'fhéidir go gcaillfeadh 70,000 áitreabh eile fós a soláthar uisce siúd go gairid. These are homes, the company says, that receive water from reservoirs that are gradually drying up because they have not had electrical power since last Friday. Áitribh iad sin, a deir an comhlacht, a fhaigheann uisce ó thaiscumair atá ag dísciú de réir a chéile mar nach bhfuil cumhacht leictreach acu ón Aoine seo caite. The Government has established emergency hubs in sixteen counties across the State to provide relief to people whose needs are not being met following the storm. Tá moil éigeandála bunaithe ag an Rialtas i sé chontae dhéag ar fud an Stáit le fóirithint a chur ar fáil do dhaoine nach bhfuil riar a riachtanais acu tar éis na stoirme. Hot meals, broadband services and laundry facilities are being provided in the various centres. Leithéidí béilí te, seirbhísí leathanbhanda agus áiseanna níocháin atá á gcur ar fáil sna hionaid éagsúla. Cavan, Monaghan, Westmeath, Meath, Longford, Leitrim, Roscommon, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Sligo, Donegal, Laois, Offaly, Wicklow and Wexford are the counties in which the emergency hubs are based. An Cabhán, Muineachán, an Iarmhí, an Mhí, an Longfort, Liatroim, Ros Comáin, Corcaigh, Luimneach, Gaillimh, Sligeach, Dún na nGall, Laois, Uíbh Fhailí, Cill Mhantáin agus Loch Garman, sin iad na contaetha a bhfuil na moil éigeandála bunaithe iontu.

Send us a textIrish water fairies are not like Tinkerbell; they are monsters.  This episode I share some of my favorites:Muirdris, the “Sea Bramble” or “Sea Briar” - A huge, mysterious, undefined horror that inflates and deflates, expands and contracts like a bellows. It has features of a thorn-bush, with branches that stings, and its appearance alone is deadly. Alp-Luachra - In Celtic mythology, a Joint-eateror Just-halver the Alp-luachra is a type of fairy who sits invisibly and consumes half of their victim's food. Chailleach- The word "Cailleach" literally means "old woman, hag" and comes from the Old Irish word caillech, which means "veiled one".  The serpent of Loch Chraili - Similarto the Loch Ness monster  The white trout, the legend of Cong - A woman turned fish pining for her dead fiance  An Dobharchú  - Translated means ‘water hound', or ‘hound of deep'. Thought to be a cross between a giant otter and a hound, Dobhar Chu is about seven-foot-long, or about the size of a crocodile. In fact, it is also known as the Irish crocodile.Support the showIrish Mythology - Mythical Cycle - Book of Invasions

Tá na mílte daoine gan cumhacht leictreach agus soláthar uisce in áiteanna éagsúla sa tír mar gheall ar an sioc mór. The Electricity Supply Board says that around 40,000 customers are currently without electricity and the company estimates that some of those people will not have power restored for the next few days. Deir Bord Soláthair an Leictreachais gur thart ar 40,000 custaiméir atá gan leictreachas faoi láthair agus measann an comhlacht nach mbeidh an chumhacht ar ais ag roinnt de na daoine sin go ceann cúpla lá eile. Irish Water says around 40,000 customers are without water supply but the company is hopeful that it will be restored to most of them by lunchtime. Deir Uisce Éireann go bhfuil thart ar 40,000 custaiméir gan soláthar uisce ach tá an comhlacht dóchasach go mbeidh sé ar ais ag an gcuid is mó acu faoi am lóin. However, water levels in some reservoirs are currently low, which is causing difficulties for technicians trying to restore supply, Irish Water says. Tá leibhéal an uisce i roinnt taiscumar íseal i láthair na huaire, áfach, agus tá sin ag cothú deacrachtaí do na teicneoirí atá ag féachaint leis an soláthar a thabhairt ar ais, a deir Uisce Éireann. Education Minister Norma Foley says most schools in the country are open but some are closed for safety reasons. Deir an tAire Oideachais Norma Foley go bhfuil an chuid is mó de scoileanna na tíre oscailte ach go bhfuil roinnt acu dúnta ar chúinsí sábháilteachta. Areas in the south of the country are most affected, such as Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Carlow and Kilkenny. Áiteanna i ndeisceart na tíre is mó atá thíos leis, mar atá, Ciarraí, Corcaigh, Luimneach, Tiobraid Árann, Port Láirge, Ceatharlach agus Cill Chainnigh. In addition to the frost, snow and sleet are affecting people and various services. Chomh maith leis an sioc, tá sneachta agus flichsneachta ag dul i gcion ar dhaoine agus ar sheirbhísí éagsúla. The Health Service Executive says that a number of outpatient appointments have been postponed in Limerick, Ennis and Nenagh due to icy roads in those areas. Deir Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte go bhfuil roinnt coinní othar seachtrach curtha ar athlá i Luimneach, in Inis agus san Aonach de bharr na bóithre sna háiteanna sin a bheith faoi reothalach. Rain, snow, hail and sleet are again promised today and meteorologists say temperatures could drop as low as five degrees below freezing. Tá báisteach, sneachta, clocha sneachta agus flichshneachta geallta arís inniu agus deir na meitéareolaithe go bhféadfadh an teocht titim chomh híseal le cúig chéim faoi bhun an reophointe. Met Éireann has extended the yellow weather warning they had issued by twelve hours. Tá síneadh dhá uair an chloig déag curtha ag Met Éireann leis an bhfógra buí aimsire a bhí eisithe acu. College students from Dublin have been learning data science skills and putting them into practice to suggest policies that could support people facing homelessness. The students from Larkin Community College and St. Joseph's, Fairview, used publicly available short-term letting data to find out how much housing is available to rent across four areas - the city of Dublin, Dunleary, Fingal, and South Dublin. They presented their findings at a recent showcase event, detailing how many people could be supported into housing from the €242 million of funding allocated by the Irish government to tackle homelessness. Analytics and AI leader SAS sponsored the project, which is part of the global education initiative P-TECH, founded by IBM. It aims to equip young people with the academic, technical and professional skills required for 21st-century jobs and ongoing education. It includes a number of partners from industry and education, as well as a school and two colleges. As part of the five-week course, the students visited SAS' Irish headquarters in Dublin, where they took part in a range of team-building activities and learned how to use software such as SAS Visual Analytics and SAS Visual Statistics. They also developed their project management and presentation skills. Jean de Villiers, Head of Analytics at SAS Ireland, said: "As always, it was a pleasure to work with such inquisitive and talented students who discovered how data can be used to devise solutions to real-world problems. In just a few weeks, the team learned valuable new data analytics skills that could help set them up for a future career in tech. "Demand for use of data across every industry, including the appetite for artificial intelligence (AI), means that it's critical to the economy and our society that the next generation have the opportunity to learn data literacy and analytics skills. The tech industry offers highly rewarding career pathways, and we want to open them up to as many people as possible." There is a major shortage of people with the data-related skills that businesses are looking for. SAS conducted a survey of decision-makers from major firms in the UK & Ireland, with an average of 27,000 employees, which revealed that 44% of firms surveyed plan to invest in AI technology but 63% said their staff did not have the AI skills necessary and 61% did not have enough staff to deliver the benefits of AI. Compounding this problem, 53% of respondents were unsure what AI qualifications and skills were needed. De Villiers added: "Initiatives like P-Tech play a key role in ensuring that organisations have the capabilities they need to make the most of new technologies so they can innovate and grow - and we are pleased to be able to share our expertise through training." Alongside SAS and IBM, other P-Tech industry partners include Irish Life, Salesforce, Cisco, Virgin Media and Irish Water. SAS offers a number of training courses aimed at people who want to gain or build on their data analytics skills.

Leath den bhfuíolluisce faoi bhun chaighdeáin an Aontais Eorpaigh. Irish Water has been criticized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the standards of waste water being pumped into the State's water systems. Tá Uisce Éireann cáinte ag an nGníomhaireacht um Chaomhnú Comhshaoil (EPA)faoi chaighdeáin an fhuíolluice atá á scoileadh isteach i gcórais uisce an Stáit. In the annual report for 2022 on the coral on urban wastewater, the EPA says that over half of the wastewater is below the environmental protection standards of the European Union. Sa tuarascáíl bhliantúil do 2022 ar an gcóiréail ar fhuíolluice uirbeach, deir an EPA go bhfuil os cionn a leath den fhuíolluisce faoi bhun chaighdeáin chosanta chomhshaoil an Aontais Eorpaigh. In addition, the report states that 3 olympic swimming pools of untreated sewage are being released into water systems every day, thanks to water treatment plants. Ina theannta sin, deir an tuarascáil go bhfuil díol 3 línn snámha oilimpeach de shéarachas abh gan chóireáil á scaoileadh isteach i gcórais uise gach lá, de cheal ionaid cóireála uisce. Although 6 villages have been connected to water treatment systems in the past year, 26 towns and villages are still without their own treatment system. Cé gur ceanglaíodh 6 shráidbhaile de chórais cóireála uisce le bliain anuas, tá 26 bhaile agus shráidbhaile fós gan a gcóras cóireála féin. 54,000 people live in these places, the majority of them in coastal towns. 54,000 duine atá ag cónaí sna háiteanna seo, agus a bhfórmór mór acu ina mbailte cois cósta. The last of these towns will not have a treatment system until the end of 2028. Ní bheidh córas cóireála ag an gceann deireanach de na bailte seo go dtí deireadh 2028. The EPA says the sewage is a threat to the environment and public health and recommends that this work be completed as soon as possible. Deir an EPA gur bagairt do chomhshaol agus don tsláinte phoiblí é an séarachas abh agus molann sé an obair seo a chur i gcrích a luaithe is féidir. The report said that 55% of urban waste water is coming from the 15 areas that have failed EU standards, and that new infrastructure is needed for this. Dúirt an tuarascáil go bhfuil 55 faoin gcéad den fhuíolluisce uirbeach ag teachtf ó na 15 cheantar ar theip orthu sna caighdeáin AE, agus go bhfuil infrastruchtúr nua ag teastáil chuige seo. For the areas that have infrastructure that does not meet the EU standards, the EPA says that significant and continuous investment will be required for the next 20 years to bring the now deficient system above the standard. Maidir leis na ceantair a bhfuil infrastruchtúr acu nach bhfuil an baint chaighdeáin an AE amach, deir an EPA go mbeidh infheistíocht shunastach agus leanúnach ag teastáil go ceann 20 bliain leis an córais atá anois easnamhach a thabhairt os cionn an chaighdeáin. Irish Water should have a long-term plan for this work, but there is no plan to come before the pollution of some of the worst affected bodies of water. Ba cheart go mbeadh plean fadtéarmach ag Uisce Éireann don obair seo, ach níl aon phlean ann le teacht roimh an truailliú ag roinnt de na dobharlaigh is measa atá buailte. Author of concern, said the Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Údar imní, a dúirt Stiúrthóir na Gníomhaireachta um Chaomhnú Comhshaoil, an Dr. Tom Ryan, that less than half of the waste water is reaching EU standards, thirty years after the State was supposed to do so. Tom Ryan, go bhfuil níós lú ná leath den bhfuíolluisce ag baint chaighdeáin an AE amach, tríocha bliaina tar éis don Stát bheith ceaptha sin a dhéanamh.
