We're diving into a heavy topic that's been making the rounds on medical TikTok, the soul-crushing feeling of "wasting your twenties" in medical training while your non-medical friends are out buying houses and going to clubs instead of living in squalor with five roommates. Kristin and I look back at our own unusual twenties, including the "Sock on the Pager" move which Kristin officially is claiming as a romantic peak of my residency years. Then we get into some "pajama patient" ophthalmology talk because Kristin refuses to take a "contact lens holiday". I explain the nightmare fuel of people who layer contacts until they have dozens stuck under their eyelid, and why a corneal abrasion can actually feel worse than childbirth. From the hidden chemistry required to be a dermatologist to the reason you can't get eyelid mites from your poodle, this episode is a mix of deep reflection and my ongoing quest to save Kristin's corneas. Takeaways: Why comparison is the "thief of joy" for medical residents watching their friends enter the workforce while they live with five roommates and uncleaned dishes. The specific sensory "imprints", like the smell of spring air, that can make a medical anniversary a recurring trauma years later. Why Kristin claims putting a sock under a vibrating pager is one of the most romantic gestures of my medical training. The "Bandaid Effect": why wearing contact lenses for too long can actually mask the pain of an open wound on your eye. Why you should never fact-check Will on whether the highest concentration of nerve endings is in the cornea or elsewhere. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! Israeli warplanes launched a series of airstrikes across Lebanon on Wednesday, killing at least 87 people and injuring 722, officials said, with densely populated neighborhoods in the capital, Beirut, among the hardest hit. Hospitals across the city and surrounding areas issued urgent calls for blood donations as medical supplies ran low amid mounting casualties. Lebanese Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine described the situation as catastrophic, with civil defense teams still searching through damaged buildings and assisting the wounded. Following the attacks, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called on international allies to intervene and halt the strikes "by all available means." President Joseph Aoun condemned the attacks, accusing Israel of repeatedly violating ceasefire commitments over the past 15 months and disregarding international law. The Israeli military said the strikes were part of a new operation, dubbed "Eternal Darkness," targeting Hezbollah command and control centers in southern and eastern Lebanon, as well as in Beirut. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the country would continue operations in Lebanon, treating the conflict there as separate from actions against Iran. We insisted on differentiating the arenas between Iran and Lebanon to change the reality in Lebanon and remove threats to northern residents (in Israel)," Katz said in a video statement. He called the strikes "the largest concentrated attack Hezbollah has suffered since the Pager operation" in September 2024 and issued a warning to Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem." Iran, in response, is finalizing preparations for "deterrent operations" against Israeli military targets, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
Doch was ist da explodiert? Schnell stellt sich heraus: Es waren Pager – also kleine, tragbare Funkempfänger.
Steve Caplin tells Simon Rose that AI agents can now rent human beings to carry out tasks they can't manage themselves. Brain cells in a petri dish have been taught to play the 90s shooter game Doom. BYD's Dena Z9GT can charge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes; unfortunately the UK doesn't have any of the required chargers. Tesco is experimenting with replacing bar codes with QR codes; Steve isn't convinced it will work. Pager sales have leapt in Russia after the internet was turned off. There's a collapsible cool box, a laundry chair with arms and a computer mouse that splits into half to become a game controller for your phone. And scientists in Edinburgh have genetically engineered bacteria to break down plastic bottles into a medicine for Parkinson's Disease. Learn more about your ad choices. What happens when AI agents — not humans — become your primary customer? That's not a hypothetical. It's already happening, and the founders who recognize it earliest are rebuilding their entire infrastructure stacks from scratch. In this live episode of Founded & Funded from our IA Summit in Seattle, Madrona Venture Partner Jon Turow sits down with Parag Agrawal, former CEO of Twitter and founder of Parallel Web Systems, and Nikita Shamgunov, who led Neon through a rapid AI pivot before its acquisition by Databricks. What they cover: Why Parag is building a new search index from the ground up — and why existing ones weren't designed for AI agents The moment Nikita realized Replit agents were spinning up databases 4x faster than all human developers combined — and what that forced him to do How to pivot an established company in weeks, not months, when your customer base suddenly changes The "pagers vs. iPhones" framework for knowing when to lean into disruption vs. protect what you have Parag's two-person hiring rubric for teams operating in deep uncertainty Why Nikita added the head of product for ChatGPT to Neon's board — and what that signaled to the market The "two-way door" model for giving agents real autonomy without catastrophic downside Whether you're building infrastructure, running an AI-native startup, or trying to figure out where your product fits in an agent-first world — this conversation will sharpen your thinking. On this episode of the podcast, we put some heavy hitters from the 90s music scene head-to-head in our “This or That” segment. We also dive into 2Pac's Makaveli era and why it felt like the beginning of a deeper artistic chapter for Pac. The nostalgia keeps rolling as we talk about pager codes being the original text messages, the mid-80s controversy when parents and teachers tried to ban Garbage Pail Kids, and the delicate art of cassette tape surgery. Tuck also tells the story of hearing Too $hort's “The Ghetto” for the first time in a smoky arcade, plus we get into daylight savings time confusion, Discord Drops, a banging Fit Check, listener shout-outs, fan mail, and a whole lot more.Today's episode was brought to you by Salty Water. What happens to an emergency department when staff go on strike? A new study published in EMJ examines this challenging scenario and its impact on patient flow. Another paper looks at the hybrid-warfare attack carried out in Lebanon, where exploding pagers caused a mass casualty incident, and what emergency departments can learn from managing that event. EMJ editor Prof. Richard Body adds some of his own reflections from the Ariana Grande concert terror attack in Manchester. Two more complex situations round out the list of papers for this episode, covering out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in pregnant patients, and magnet ingestion in children. Read the highlights: Primary survey Prehospital resuscitative hysterotomy: a practice review The pager explosions: lessons learnt from a hybrid-warfare mass casualty incident What health systems should learn from the Lebanon pager attack Diagnosis and management of paediatric magnet ingestion: a systematic review of clinical practice guidelines Evaluating the impact of NHS strikes on patient flow through emergency departments The EMJ podcast is hosted by: Prof. Richard Body, EMJ Deputy Editor, University of Manchester, UK (@richardbody) Dr. Sarah Edwards, EMJ Senior Associate Editor and Social Media Editor, Royal Derby Hospital, UK (@drsarahedwards) You can subscribe to the EMJ podcast on all podcast platforms to get the latest podcast every month. Lebanese and Jewish groups have condemned a planned event in Melbourne that appears to celebrate last year's Israeli pager operation in Lebanon, which killed dozens and injured thousands more. The event run by the group called Lions of Zion has been labelled 'disgraceful' - but organisers say they are celebrating what they describe as one of the most ingenious military operations in history.

Every Saturday, we revisit a story from the archives. This originally aired on September 18, 2024. None of the dates, titles, or other references from that time have been changed. Lebanon is reeling after two days of coordinated attacks attributed to Israel that detonated thousands of pagers belonging to Hezbollah. The simultaneous explosions – in indiscriminate locations across the country – left deaths and thousands of injuries in their wake. Does this unprecedented attack signal a new reality? Join Wall Street Journal's Josh Dawsey, The New York Times' Tyler Pager and The Washington Post's Isaac Arnsdorf with Pulitzer Prize winner Maggie Haberman for a conversation about Donald Trump's stunning political comeback, what it means for America, and Dawsey, Pager, and Arnsdorf's new account of the election, 2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America. “The whole world was against me, and I won,” said Donald Trump in an exclusive interview, ten days before his second inauguration. Nearly four years after Trump's first turbulent presidency concluded in a violent attempt to overturn the election, he made a political comeback on a scale that stunned the nation. In 2024 — drawing on extraordinary access to the Trump, Biden, and Harris teams —Dawsey, Pager, and Arnsdorf bring us the definitive account of how he did it. In a special conversation, hear these award-winning reporters talk to Maggie Haberman about how the 2024 election is influencing Trump's policy — vindicating and emboldening him — and what it means for US democracy. This talk was recorded on July 17th, 2025, at The 92nd Street Y, New York.
This week on the Sumud Podcast, we're joined by journalist and BreakThrough News host Rania Khalek for a special episode diving into her latest documentary, Israeli Terror in Lebanon: Inside the Pager Attacks. The documentary uncovers the untold story behind the September 17th pager explosions in Lebanon—a years-long covert Israeli operation that left civilians maimed and silenced.

"The whole world was against me, and I won," said Donald Trump in an exclusive interview, ten days before his second inauguration. Nearly four years after Trump's first turbulent presidency concluded in a violent attempt to overturn the election, he made a political comeback on a scale that stunned the nation. How did the first U.S. president to become a convicted felon regain control of the White House? And at what cost? In 2024, award-winning reporters Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager, and Isaac Arnsdorf bring us the definitive and explosive account of how Trump and his advisers overcame a dozen primary challengers, four indictments, two assassination attempts, and his own past mistakes to defeat the Democrats, and pave the way for a second term that would be far more emboldened and revenge-fueled than the first.Drawing on extraordinary access to the Trump, Biden, and Harris teams, 2024 takes readers beyond the speeches, rallies, and debates to reveal the innermost workings of the Republican and Democratic presidential campaigns. Beginning in August 2022 with the FBI's search of Mar-a-Lago for classified documents, and Trump's subsequent decision to run once again for president, Dawsey, Pager, and Arnsdorf chart how Trump stifled the rise of Republican opponents, including Ron DeSantis, and how his campaign, led by Susie Wiles, landed on a winning strategy. They reveal in unrivaled detail how Joe Biden and his team brushed off concerns about his age, ignored polling numbers, and held off the next generation of eager Democratic hopefuls-even as Biden was dealing with his own special counsel investigation and the trial of his son Hunter. After his disastrous debate performance forced him to withdraw, Biden anointed Vice President Kamala Harris as the candidate and tasked her with running the shortest presidential campaign in modern U.S. history. With only 107 days to distinguish herself from the past four years, Harris lacked the time or space to outrun Biden's shadow-a challenge in and of itself, but one which Biden would make even more difficult. On November 5th, 2024, Trump was elected the nation's forty-seventh president, and would return to power vindicated, emboldened, unrestrained, and burning for revenge. Gripping, revelatory, and deeply reported, 2024 is the remarkable inside story of one of the most consequential elections of our lifetime, the results of which will test American democracy and shape the future of the free world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
This is a question we get asked often. How do I introduce/share/read the Bible to my family? Part 2 comes next week when the Akrami family will give us their best tips. For the first time, ex-Mossad agents who led the exploding pager and walkie-talkie plot against Hezbollah, which garnered worldwide attention in September, detail their 10-year undercover op in an interview with correspondent Lesley Stahl. Meeting in Israel, the agents, who recently retired from service, share never-before-known details that caught Hezbollah fighters by surprise and ultimately spurred change across the region from Lebanon to Syria to Iran. Last year, the Veterans Administration announced it would begin funding clinical trials to explore the use of psychedelic drugs for treating post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and addiction. However, these trials are small, and even if successful, it will likely be years before veterans can access psychedelics at the VA. Many U.S. veterans struggling with PTSD aren't waiting. Thousands of them are traveling overseas seeking relief at psychedelic retreats where these substances are legal to use, mostly in indigenous ceremonies. Correspondent Anderson Cooper follows nine veterans on a psychedelic journey to the west coast of Mexico, where they hope to find healing. Correspondent Jon Wertheim goes behind the scenes as George Clooney makes his Broadway debut, starring in an adaptation of the 2005 Oscar-nominated movie “Good Night, and Good Luck.” Clooney co-wrote both the original screenplay and this play, which tell the story of pioneering journalist Edward R. Murrow, who took on Senator Joseph McCarthy. Clooney calls it a fight for the ages and says the plot, which revolves around themes of truth, intimidation and courage in corporate media, resonates today. Now 64, the actor tells Wertheim why he finally feels ready to take on the role of Murrow himself. Healthcare Digital Transformation Podcast · Damo Consulting – The Big Unlock – Podcast – Ep 160 – Rita Sharma In this episode, Rita Sharma, Chief Product Officer at Pager Health discusses how they are implementing generative AI in healthcare, focusing on trust, ease of adoption, and responsible data practices. Rita shares how consumers increasingly expect 24/7, human-like digital support and single point of contact to navigate the fragmented and often overwhelming healthcare system. She emphasizes that while the technology behind the generative AI is maturing rapidly, the real challenge lies in building trust—both within organizations and with consumers—particularly around the responsible data of use. Rita also talks about Pager's approach to responsible AI implementation, noting that internal alignment on governance, data security, and transparency is just as critical as the technology itself. Rita further highlights that successful adoption of generative AI is not just about innovation, but about creating a cultural alignment and fostering trust, ultimately ensuring personalized, streamlined care experiences for all. Take a listen.
