Richie is joined by Stuart Waiton and Mark Brady. Almost half of white men are self-censoring at work for fear of causing offence, a poll has found. Research by JL Partners also found almost a quarter of them (23 per cent) believe they experience discrimination because of their race and gender. Some 41 per cent said they worried they would be sacked if they said the wrong thing, while a third (34 per cent) believed white men were the least valued employees in their workplace. To discuss this and more, Richie is joined by the author, journalist and academic, Stuart Waiton. https://scottishunionforeducation.substack.com/abouthttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61572731252083&mibextid=wwXIfr&rdid=ldQ94zhU2T3qoem0&share_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fshare%2F1DvUEnvRvJ%2F%3Fmibextid%3DwwXIfr#In hour two Richie discusses an issue that's sparking growing debate across Ireland—how the country is handling migration and, more specifically, the impact of housing International Protection applicants in towns and rural communities. From vacant hotels to shuttered recreation centres, there's a sense among many locals that their towns are changing—and not always for the better. Property owners are profiting, rental markets are tightening, and questions are mounting about transparency, fairness, and long-term planning. One such place feeling the strain is Carrickmacross, in County Monaghan. To discuss this, Richie is joined by Mark Brady a local resident who's seen the changes up close. He shares what life is like on the ground, and why so many people in his town—and others—are speaking out.https://www.facebook.com/Carrickmacrosssaysnohttps://www.facebook.com/mark.brady.1800

McGarrity's militant Republicanism came into regular conflict with the reality of the political situation in Ireland. While the role of John Devoy has been well documented in the development of Irish American nationalism in the form of Clan na Gael that of Joseph McGarrity has been less well analyzed. For many historians the central focus of Irish American nationalism during the revolutionary period of 1916–1923 has centered on the Devoy-controlled branch of Clan na Gael. However, this period saw significant influence from McGarrity and the Philadelphia branch of the movement in shaping political events in Ireland which has been largely ignored. The book places McGarrity at the center of Irish Republicanism during one of the most critical periods of its history. It is hard to imagine how militant Irish Republicanism would have evolved had it not been for the role and influence of this long-neglected figure in Irish history. How can you reduce bad decisions in both personal and professional contexts? This week, I'm thrilled to share a captivating conversation with Adrian Kelly, author of "The Success Complex" and an expert in decision-making under pressure. We explore how intellectual humility and resilience can lead to better decision-making and more effective leadership. We also discuss how we can: ⭐️ Encourage people to embrace failure as an opportunity for growth and to seek feedback and support. ⭐️ Use historical and real-life examples to highlight the importance of context in decision-making. ⭐️ Advance intellectual humility as a critical skill for recognising and overcoming personal biases. Adrian shares compelling stories, such as the interactions between Hitler and Stalin during WWII, to illustrate the dangers of ignoring critical information. He also explains practical strategies, including the "5 whys" technique and stress management practices, to navigate high-pressure situations effectively. Join us as we uncover the keys to making smarter, more informed decisions and creating flourishing organisations. Don't forget to follow, rate, and share the show! Remember to tune in to our next episode in two weeks, where we'll be focusing on building brilliant organisations. About Adrian Kelly Adrian Kelly is a former solicitor who has transitioned into a role as a business and sports performance coach. His entrepreneurial journey includes co-founding Airsynergy, a rapidly growing renewable energy company, where he played a crucial role from 2008 to 2018. Following this tenure, Adrian has been active as a business advisor and coach, assisting companies across both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. His advisory work notably includes supporting businesses impacted by Brexit through a contract with InterTradeIreland. Alongside his team, Adrian worked individually with over 100 businesses, helping them navigate complex issues such as import/export operations.   Having played and coached baseball for the last 10 years, he has a keen interest in promoting sport and wellbeing and is the current Chairman of the multi million euro and award-winning Peace Link Sport Complex Clones, County Monaghan. Once a struggling student who languished at the bottom of his class, Adrian knows first-hand the sting of failure. Now, three decades later, he brings his experience as a solicitor, entrepreneur and sports coach to challenge common misconceptions about the core skills vital to overcoming challenge. Blending history, behavioural science and a rich tapestry of interviews, in his new book The Success Complex Adrian explores this age-old question in a new light. With examples from Napoleon to the movie and sports stars of today, he examines how even the brightest and best can lose their way when it comes to the application of those skills. Brian Kernohan decides to find out if a letter, held by his family for generations, really does reveal the location of a murder victim's remains in rural Ireland. “I Robert James Crawford do avow that Thomas Johnson was slain by me in a fair fight” So begins a mysterious murder confession, apparently written in 1860 – just after the worst years of the Irish Famine. The writer claims to have murdered his friend during a quarrel and then buried the body under the hearthstone of his father's kitchen in Drumkeen, County Monaghan – but is the confession real? “He drew his knife and I drew mine he would have fled but I followed him into the hall and killed him there” As Brian sets out to try and find the alleged burial site he also digs through the history books to find out more about the murderer and his victim – and he finds his imagination drifting. Who were these men and what could have happened to lead to such a brutal murder? Ulster Canal: the missing link?

Open Country

The Ulster canal was built in in the mid 19th century across the north of Ireland, linking Lough Neagh in the east with Lough Erne in the west. Like most canals, it fell into decline with the arrival of the railways. Partition in 1922 was the final nail in its coffin, and all 46 miles closed completely in the 1930s. Now there are plans to re-open a cross-border section of the canal between County Armagh and County Monaghan - an idea which was mentioned specifically in the Good Friday Agreement. In this programme Helen Mark retraces the ghost of the route of the old canal - easy to see in some places, hidden beneath decades of ivy and tangled undergrowth in others. In the village of Benburb, she meets author and enthusiast Brian Cassells, who tells her about the history of the canal and paints a picture of what restoring it could mean. On the other side of the border, she visits the Ulster Canal Stores at Clones, where canal restoration work has already started. Stores manager Hugh Tunney describes re-opening the canal as a "game changer". He's hoping it will bring much-needed infrastructure for boaters and paddleboarders, attracting tourists and generating more income for the area. At Lough Neagh, Helen meets up with a group of canoeists, who tell her that reviving the Ulster canal would open up whole new possibilities of routes for them to use - linking this area of the island with other existing waterways. At the other end of the canal, she tries her hand at rowing a traditional Irish currach on Lough Erne, under the guidance of skipper Olivia Cosgrove. Could the Ulster canal be the missing link in the extensive network of waterways which criss-cross the island of Ireland? Presented by Helen Mark and produced by Emma Campbell

Léiríonn tástálacha atá déanta ar fheirm turcaithe i gContaeMhuineachán go bhfuil an H5N1 nó Fliú na nÉan tolgtha ag roinnt de na héanacha ansin. Cuireadh tástáil ar suas le 3,000 turcaí ar an fheirm an deireadh seachtaine seo agus fuarthas rian den fliú i roinnt díobh. They were all being prepared for the Christmas market. Welcome back to Navigating New York! On this week's episode I chat to Peloton's first ever Irish fitness instructor, Daniel McKenna aka Daniel Yankee.Daniel is 29 and has been living in New York for almost 5 years. Known by his friends and clients as Daniel Yankee, he was born here in the Bronx, but raised in his beloved County Monaghan. Growing up Daniel says his Mum was his biggest inspiration and is still his greatest supporter. As a PE teacher, she encouraged Daniel to try every sport he could.  However Daniel's talent on the Gaelic Football field is what brought him to some of the highest levels of the sport in Ireland, playing at all levels for his County and winning an All-Ireland Championship with his Club Truagh Gaels in Croke Park in 2014 - putting away 1.7 from play on the day himself. His talent in GAA brought him to Boston and Chicago and Daniel eventually followed his aspiration to move to New York in 2017 where he had been recruited to play for Sligo GAA. The day after he landed at JFK, he started laboring as an electrician in Lower Manhattan, and his new adventure began. Daniel did what he could to make ends meet while he pursued his dream of becoming a fitness instructor on the side. Early mornings and late nights working 2 jobs, travelling the length of Manhattan every day took a toll on Daniel but he never stopped hustling. After he got one lucky break in a chain of gyms he kept his eyes on the prize and developed as a personal trainer with various certifications and built experience taking as many clients and group classes as he possibly could. During the pandemic, Daniel started his own fitness group, the Irish Yank Society, that started out as virtual kettle bell class people could do from home but as restrictions eased, transformed into a very popular outdoor class down the street from his apartment in Greenwich Village. In late 2020 Daniel got approached by Peloton to audition to become a fitness instructor for what he describes as his absolute dream job. For anyone unfamiliar, Peloton is the world's largest interactive fitness platform with almost 6 million members. Peloton peaked during the pandemic because they had already developed a new concept in Fitness using technology, content and best-in-class instructors to empower people to reach their fitness goals at home. Peloton are known for their sleek treadmill and stationary bike you can buy and have delivered and set up in your home, as well as their App for equipment free workouts. It's well known that peloton instructors are handpicked and become like celebrities within the peloton community! In our chat Daniel talks about the struggles he faced on his way to this huge success and I hope you take as much from his story as I did!

One of Ireland’s most famous poets, Kavanagh grew up in rural County Monaghan and moved to Dublin as a young man. Live public interview with the legendary Hugh O’Brien, or ‘Hugh Barney’ as he’s often known. It was recorded in the Darly School Hall as part of a full house at the Cootehill Arts Festival in my hometown of Cootehill Co. Cavan. Hugh Barney is a 79-year-old historian, educator, actor and community activist. He taught me history and English at secondary school and left a lasting impression on me, as he did so many others.   Topics Hugh discusses in this conversation include his childhood and upbringing, his 39 years as a teacher, his views on education, history, politics, religion, spirituality, alcohol, community involvement, and his love for cinema and drama.   This is a man who has clearly lived a full life and as you’re about to hear, he continues to do so. Hugh has inspired countless people to think differently and to believe in themselves and so it’s great to be able to share this voice with more people through this podcast, especially international listeners and Cootehill people living and listening all over the world, including my brother Sean Og in China. As well as being the author of 3 books and 3 booklets, Hugh is an accomplished actor, appearing in countless theatre productions, in the acclaimed TV show Fr Ted, and in several movies and documentaries including The Escapist, Ordinary Decent Criminal, Korea, and the Run of the Country. It’s amazing that the one thing we never really got around to talking about was Hugh’s visual impairment. In recent years he has lost his eyesight but that hasn’t held him back. He now uses a stick to get around and he has also mastered phone and computer technology that allows him to stay connected and to keep up with his various projects. Hugh’s wife Noeleen was also an amazing person and she passed away in 2012. I’m a big advocate of listening to and learning from our elders and it was a real privilege to have been chosen by Hugh Barney as his interviewer for this event, which attracted rave reviews. I want to say I feel particularly fortunate that Hugh is in good health and was able to do this interview given that back in 2017 he spent several months in hospital, including a few weeks in intensive care. Hugh was on flying form on the night of the interview and as you’ll hear shortly, it was a real rollercoaster ride that was peppered with some questions from the audience. There was also an interval on the night and I have edited that out. There’s no shortage of laughs throughout the interview and there’s also a good few swear words, particularly in the first part, so keep that in mind if there are sensitive ears listening. It was particularly inspiring to learn more about Hugh’s role in the setting up of Drumlin House. Established by a group of volunteers in 1982, Drumlin House is a pioneering training centre that provides opportunities for young people with special needs to enhance their rights and aspirations. As well as being a training centre for dozens of young people, Drumlin House also includes a theatre and social enterprises including a garden centre and a print shop. We didn’t discuss it in too much detail in the interview but I thought it deserved a special mention here as it’s such a great example of community strength in action. Hugh had told me in a previous conversation that the founding of the centre was a real community effort, and made possible because of the generous donations and support from Cootehill Coop, who through its Manager Sean McDonnell helped secure the original premises, and also through a fundraising gig by country music legend Big Tom. In total Hugh served as voluntary Chair of Drumlin House for 32 years and remains an active and involved supporter to this day, as well as being a champion for social inclusion in so many other ways. Someone described the interview to me as a Love Letter From Hugh To Cootehill, although it is also the story of a remarkable life journey and themes that are relevant to people everywhere. You may find that some of the content is a bit more specific to Cootehill in particular, especially the short segment discussing buildings and shops in the town, but overall there’s something in this interview for everyone.  Just for those of you who don’t know Cootehill. It’s a small town in County Cavan of fewer than 2000 people. It is situated at the border of County Monaghan, and about 20 kilometres south of the northern border. In many ways, it’s not dissimilar to life in other small towns throughout Ireland and indeed throughout the world.

We speak too about her final college project, something really cool where she mixed photography and comedy. We speak about how and why she got into comedy. We talk then about what it's like to die on stage and how with Niamh it makes her more determined to right that wrong the next time she's on stage. We chat about one incident in particular when she had the unfortunate experience of a whole room turning against her, but she explains how she won them back. We have a chat about her experience on Britain's Got Talent and how their toilets had no window and she couldn't escape. We talk about a play that Niamh was recently a part of, Living on the Edge, we spoke about the play, the idea behind it and how she became involved in it. Finally then we chat about the watered-down comedy on TV and how it's a sad reflection of the spontaneity of live comedy.

Unlike many comedians that attach themselves to a scene in a certain city he's doing his own thing living in rural County Monaghan, a border county in the north of the Republic of Ireland, but it's not Northern Ireland, even though it is in Ulster and has a border with Northern Ireland, and all the counties of Northern Ireland are in Ulster. It's all a bit mad, Monaghan's a bit like that. Anyway, we kicked off the interview by talking about the McGrane surname, Id' read it was derived from a Scotsman who left the Kingdom of Dalriada on the Scottish isle of Jura. Lorcan put me in my place though and informed me that the name comes from McGrainne and explains why that's a bit unusual. We spoke about growing up and living in Co. Monaghan with that constant feeling that everyone is watching everything that everyone does, all the time. We spoke about not falling into the trap of so-called 'edgy comedy' and how comedy promoters seems to love phrases like 'no holds barred' and 'anything goes' but you're not allowed be racist or sexist, and you're not anyway coz only scumbags are racist and sexist. Lorcan revealed that remaining real and truthful to yourself brings out the best in comedy. Lorcan told me about the time he was asked to do a set in front of the local GAA crowd, which didn't really go down as well as had been hoped. We chatted too about two of Lorcan's favourite subjects, geek culture and films, in particular superhero movies. The commonalities of teaching and stand-up comedy get a mention too, Lorcan is a lecturer in pop culture and has done his fair share of substitute teaching too so we chat about that and what they have in common. The rise of 'fake news' gets a mention too, it's only coming to the fore now but Lorcan tells us it's been around for a good while. We speak about some of Lorcan's alter egos on stage, Dermot H. Dark Materials, Livid Lorcan and Defective Deckard 237 and how exploring themes through new characters can open up a whole new take on things. We spoke then about the advantages of being a stand-up comedians while living in Co. Monaghan, not too far from the Dublin and Belfast scenes but still too far away from them to fell connected to them and how ploughing his own furrow suits Lorcan down to the ground. Finally then we spoke about Lorcan's comedic influences and his advice for new comedians.

Tonight we celebrate Memorial Day and the legacy of the Irishman that led the cause to create it. General John A. Logan was a County Monaghan man who fought in the Mexican-American War, the Battle of Bull Run, and in the rotundas of the Illinois AND United States Senate. His proudest moment was issuing General Order No. 11, which established an annual day for the purpose of strewing flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of the comrades who died in defense of their country. Tune in as Tim and Mike pay tribute to those who have fallen with music from The Fureys, Bruce Springsteen, The Elders, and Kevin Flynn & The Avondale Ramblers. Thank you to all that have served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces. Memorial Day also means Irish Fest at Chicago Gaelic Park and the boys preview their 30th annual festival with songs from the bands you'll see this weekend including Chicago Reel, Screaming Orphans and The Fenians. Also featuring music from Rory Gallagher and The Gloaming (catch Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill this Saturday at the Old Town School of Folk Music.) Marie-Louise Muir meets Ireland's artists at the former ancestral home of theatre impresario Sir Tyrone Guthrie. Before his death in 1971, giant of world theatre and pioneer of the open stage, Sir Tyrone Guthrie, bequeathed his ancestral home at Annaghmakerrig, County Monaghan, to the Irish State as a residential workplace and retreat for artists. Today 'The Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig' continues to function as a vital cog within the creative landscape of writers, composers, painters and dancers from Northern Ireland, the Irish Republic and beyond. It's a flagship example of cross-border co-operation, dependent on joint funding from Arts Councils on both sides of the Irish border and could be seen as a barometer of the nation's cultural health overall. Crucially, Guthrie stated in his will that a condition of any residency at Annaghmakerrig would be that guests sit together for dinner each evening in the dining room of this historic house set among the rolling hills of the Irish countryside. Now arts journalist and broadcaster, Marie-Louise Muir, is joined for 'Dinner At Annaghmakerrig' by Irish composer Neil Martin, Belfast born visual artist Rita Duffy and former Creative Director of Dublin's Abbey theatre, Christopher Fitzsimon. Together, over fine food and against a backdrop of archival recordings of the great man himself, they share their perspectives on Guthrie's gift and legacy and explain what they believe to be the role of the arts and the artist in Irish society today. Producer: Conor Garrett.
