As a truck driver, you only make money when your truck is rolling. The downside is that your metabolism stops running. Not totally, but it slows down due to sleep patterns being thrown off, and other metabolic issues. Sipewe was a truck driver, and started studied metabolic endocrinology to get his own health back in order. In his book and training material, he goes into greater detail on this subject, and here Sipewe gives a little background on how his book came to be, and what inspired it.

Recently I came across a meme featuring Malian King Mansa Musa and how a person wanted to see a film about the man who was deemed to be one of the wealthiest men who ever lived who gave so much gold away in Egypt on his famous trek in Africa, that it caused the gold markets to crash. I was first introduced to King Mansa Musa back in high school in the '80s when I saw one of those Budweiser marketing displays about the “Great Kings and Queens of Africa” in a bar that I was not to supposed to be in. I didn't think anything of it other than cool, an African King. It was later when one of the former podcasters I knew used an image of Musa as his cover art. The show was in part about generating wealth. I then decided to look up information on King Musa and discovered he enslaved people and being a modern slavery abolitionist, I questioned the choice. So coming across the meme armed with the information I had learned previously, I simply stated a fact which was that his wealth was acquired from gold mines worked by victims of slavery and that his “flossing” or “showing off” his wealth, put a target on Africa which brought more and more Arabs and Europeans to Africa. Therefore in my own meme, in the description I wrote that I would like to see the film as well, but only if it is historically accurate. This resulted in some pushback which I will share on this podcast including the research by Balanta scholar by the name of Siphiwe Baleka who formerly identified as African American or Black. Before earning his commercial drivers license, Siphiwe was a nationally ranked high school swimmer, failing to qualify for the 1992 US Olympic Swimming Trials by just 0.8 seconds in the 100 freestyle.  Fast forward to 2008 when Siphiwe had been driving commercially for just two months and gained 15 lbs in the process. At that moment, he realized the need to promote a healthy lifestyle for the 86% of truck drivers who are overweight.  Alongside hosts Jake and Michael, Siphiwe talks about fitness in trucking and lays out the main methods he advises around diet, movement and sleep that can make a significant impact in battling health problems and obesity.

FITNESS: the one thing we all wish we were more involved with but have the hardest time actually doing it. Raise your hand if this is you (I know my hand is raised)!   In this episode we are chatting with Siphiwe Baleka who, after spending years training to swim professionally, took a different turn with his life. But it wasn’t originally a turn to entrepreneurship (yet).   Once he graduated school, Siphiwe got into the profession of truck driving. Noticing the weight he gained after just a couple weeks, a lightbulb went off and the result was-- a 13 week weight loss program for busy people who can’t get to a gym, don’t own the equipment in their houses, or don’t have access to healthy food markets easily.   Whether you’re a truckdriver, consultant, busy parent, or simply someone who wants to maximize the little time they have, Siphiwe created something anyone can benefit from.   We create excuses to not doing something or say we will do it tomorrow but THE TIME IS NOW! So what are you waiting for?  This is Siphiwe’s philosophy - his exercises are 4 minutes long and are simple and creative ways to get active and burn fat fast.   When you get the mindset to win and succeed, positive things will happen. Put yourself in a place where you will succeed and get your mindset in the zone! It’s time to change your concept of what a workout is and start getting active no matter what! Living a healthy life can be hard. It can be really hard. It’s the whole lifestyle part that gets in the way. It’s easy enough to eat healthy when you’re quarantined at home and surrounded by healthy food that you bought, no alcohol, and lots of motivation, but it can be really hard the moment we step out our front door. It’s not so easy to be healthy and fit when we sit at a desk for 9 hours a day. It’s also not so easy to be healthy and fit when it seems like we are surrounded by over-processed, high sugar, high carbohydrate food. When you’re on the go, what are you supposed to do? Today’s guest, Siphiwe Baleka, learned just how intense this issue could be when he decided to become a truck driver. Out on the road with no schedule, clean food, or gym nearby Siphiwe gained over 10% of his body weight in his very first 2 months. Rather than resign himself to the fact that that was just going to be his new life, Siphiwe decided to do something about it. Over time, he developed a plan to make himself the fittest trucker in America, and now he helps truckers across the country follow in his footsteps.

Siphiwe Baleka is, amongst other things, a Yale grad and world class swimmer turned world traveler and vagabond, turned truck driver, turned fitness visionary and guru.  And that doesn't even scratch the surface.  Siphiwe's new book, 4-Minute Fit, is geared not only for those who drive eighteen-wheelers, but also for anyone who travels for work, has a job that involves a lot of sitting, or doesn't think they have enough time to exercise and eat better.   And while fitness is Baleka's bread and butter, we cover a wide range of topics in this enlightening conversation.  We chat about fitness, listening to your inner voice, conquering your fears, and much more.   To learn more about Siphiwe and his new book, you can check out the following links: 4minutefitbook.com/millennial siphiwebaleka.com Enjoy!

Siphiwe Baleka is the founder of Fitness Trucking, LLC and serves as the Driver Health and Fitness Coach at Prime Inc., one of America’s largest trucking companies. His innovative, on-the-go wellness program has helped thousands of truck drivers lose weight and reclaim their health (69% of truck drivers are obese; the trucking industry is the least healthy of any industry in the country). His premise is that ANYONE with 4 minutes can get fit. What works for truckers can work for any sedentary person! Formerly, Baleka served as the Driver Health Editor for both Road King magazine and The Trucking Network magazine. After being raised in Chicago by a single dad, he graduated from Yale University and is the first African American ever named to the First Team All-Ivy League Swim Team.  He missed qualifying for the 1992 Olympic Swimming Trials in the 100 freestyle by just 0.8 seconds! He is the author of 4-Minute Fit (Simon & Schuster).
