What happens when a star athlete with a leadership mindset steps into the world of business—starting at the front desk and rising to CEO? Well, Damon Lembi knows firsthand. Drafted by both the Atlanta Braves and the Yankees, he had his sights set on a professional baseball career. But when that path took an unexpected turn, he found himself in a completely different arena: the corporate world. Rather than leaning on family connections, Damon started as a receptionist at Learnit, the company his father co-founded. But with the same work ethic and drive that made him a leader on the field, he climbed the ranks—eventually stepping into the CEO role just as the dot-com bubble was about to burst. What followed was a crash course in resilience, reinvention, and redefining leadership for a new era. For over 30 years, Damon has been at the helm of Learnit, evolving it from a tech training company into a powerhouse for professional development. His insights on leadership, storytelling, and the future of work are shaped by his own journey—from navigating the highs and lows of entrepreneurship to embracing AI as a critical tool for the modern leader. Today, you will hear my conversation with one of the OGs of the Internet, Perry Marshall. Let me tell you a little bit about Perry. He is undoubtedly one of the most experienced Internet Marketers of all time. If there's ever an internet marketing hall of fame, he would be inducted in the first round. I remember crossing Perry's path way back in my early days as an online business builder, long before this podcast was even an idea, let alone a full show. I remember thinking how smart he was then, and let me tell you -- he's even smarter now. You will hear Perry talk about his early days online, how he got involved, how he positioned himself with Google AdWords until he recognized hitching his brand to a platform he didn't own was not a great idea. He's written a ton about how to market and sell online, including “80/20 Sales and Marketing -- the Definitive Guide to Working Less and Making More.” You all know how much I love a good book title -- this is exceptional. And what's inside will blow your mind. Perry has consulted across 300+ industries, shaping the $400B digital ad space. He's the founder of the $10M Evolution 2.0 Prize and co-founder of the Cancer & Evolution Working Group. Perry's insights bridge the worlds of marketing, science, and entrepreneurship, making him a must-listen for anyone seeking growth and innovation. Anna Maria Ponzi is the former owner and past president of Ponzi Vineyards in Oregon's Willamette Valley. From the age of four, she's had the rare experience of working in every aspect of the winery. She helped plant its original vines, worked on the bottling line, hosted guests in the tasting room and has made countless national and international sales calls. Anna Maria has served the state's wine industry in myriad ways, including serving as an early ambassador for Oregon wine both nationally and internationally while building Oregon wine country into a travel destination. After earning her degree in journalism from the University of Oregon, she worked in Boston's publishing industry until returning to the rural family business in 1991. Soon after, she was joined by her winemaking sister and the two young women trailblazed the growing tide of female vintners. Simultaneously, they grew the business from an annual production of 10,000 to over 50,000 cases and increased its vineyard holdings from 20 to 140 acres. This ownership distinguished Ponzi Vineyards as the nation's only winery solely owned and operated by second-generation sisters at the time. She is recognized for establishing a premiere travel destination with the opening of the valley's first seated wine experience among other visitor attractions in the area. Her memoir ‘Pinot Girl' was released in celebration of the winery's 50th Anniversary in 2020. A year later, she and her sister successfully negotiated the sale of the winery to the esteemed French house Société Jacques Bollinger of Champagne, France. In 2023, she created “The Four-Ounce Pour”, a keynote that reflects on her life in wine and how bringing intentionality and balance into our lives creates greater meaning and impact. In today's episode, David and I explore the profound journey of leadership and how it evolves with time. Reflecting on his own path, David has come to realize that leadership isn't just about titles or positions—it's a dynamic journey that evolves with time and experience. From his early days in the Boy Scouts, where he first tasted leadership responsibility, to building and leading teams in his business ventures, every step has been a lesson in growth and accountability. What's truly fascinating is how his perception of leadership has shifted—from leading himself to guiding a team, and now, nurturing leadership qualities in his own son. One of the big takeaways for David about leadership as he reflects on his own journey is this: Leadership isn't confined to the boardroom; it extends into our personal lives, shaping our roles as parents and mentors. Embracing this multifaceted aspect of leadership brings richness to our experiences and opportunities for continuous improvement. Let's remember, leadership is not just about leading others—it's about inspiring growth, fostering resilience, and embracing responsibility at every turn. Have you ever seen a performance that moved you at the soul level? I have many times and it just happened again the other night when I was watching the Country Music Awards. I don't have a long history with country music as I've been a rock n roll girl most of my life. However, several country artists are putting out music these days I'm drawn to which is part of the inspiration behind today's episode. We can learn a lot about playing our positions more effectively from watching and studying people who are at the top of their game including people like Chris Stapleton and what he symbolizes for all of us on a universal level. ===== Watch Chris Stapleton perform at the CMA 2023: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLhs0jfVRB8 = = = = = Thank you for supporting the show! Richard Newman is the Founder of Body Talk, a business that helps people improve their communication and impact. In the past 23 years his team has trained over 120,000 business leaders around the world. One client gained over $1 Billion in new business in just one year using Richard's techniques, winning 100% of their new business pitches. When Richard was 18, he started his mission to discover the core principles of communication. As part of this mission, he lived in the foothills of the Himalayas with Tibetan monks who spoke no English. They had to communicate non-verbally to understand each other. He then worked as a professional actor before becoming a communication coach and keynote speaker. Richard's research on non-verbal communication was published in the Journal of Psychology. His study proved that you can increase your leadership ratings by 44% and win 59% more votes in an election by changing a few simple behaviors. He has also won the coveted Cicero Grand Prize Award for Best Speechwriter of the Year. His new book ‘Lift Your Impact' explores how you can transform your mindset, influence and future to elevate your work, team and life. Have you ever felt like you're in a maze, searching for the elusive exit? I definitely have. Those times in my life when my vision and direction were muddy at best, I got so caught up in the whirlwind of life, I forgot the power of having a clear vision and direction. It's like having a treasure map without 'X' marking the spot. But here's the harsh and compelling truth: underestimating the influence of a vision can be akin to sailing without a compass—it leaves you wandering aimlessly in the vast ocean of opportunities. In today's episode, I share my own experience with getting clear about the direction and vision of my life despite the chaos of the past two years that continues to impact where I'm going and why. I also share an excellent exercise you can do to get some clarity about the direction and vision of your life as we wind down one year and look ahead to a new one. It's really powerful and can give you peace of mind that might be missing from your life right now. Let me know what you discover! Well Team -- I've achieved a new milestone here at the Play Your Position Podcast! Today's episode featuring the super accomplished, insightful, and hilarious Dr. Taylor Hartman marks number 500 of the show. 500 y'all! I am celebrating! I remember thinking way back in the dark ages of early 2014 when I first started podcasting that having 50 episodes sounded impressive. Here I am with 500 and I am proud of my work. I am honored to have had the opportunity to converse about leadership and life with as many wonderful humans as I've had since I started. And I'm grateful to all of you who tune in to the show each week. I love you, Team PYP! Are you ready for kickoff??? Let's go! About Dr. Taylor Hartman Through The People Code (formerly published as The Color Code) and The Character Code, Dr. Hartman provides a universal message, simple and profound: life is about relationships. As an author, psychologist, corporate consultant and leadership coach, his life's work has centered on providing an insightful system for improving your understanding of yourself and others and strengthening your day-to-day relationships with the People Code Personality Profile. The People Code explains the “why” behind the “what” by identifying four basic personality types and showing you how to use “color profiles” to cultivate rich and balanced character and relationships. In today's conversation, he goes into detail about the four colors. You will walk away with a new understanding of why you do what you do and perhaps more importantly, why others do what they do! Use the code KAYSER30 to save when you sign up to take the powerful and life-changing Hartman Personality Profile Test here: https://taylorhartman.com/assessment-information/ Of all the assessments I've taken over the years (and I've taken them all), the Hartman Personality Assessment is by far the simplest to understand AND the most effective for strengthening relationships. = = = = = Thank you for supporting the show!
