Argh, DC... This week, V and Emily take another frustrating look at how DC Comics just loves to kill off Robins, this time with added explicit misogyny toward the fanbase as well as the character they've doomed to the gallows. On the bright side, V got an amazing primer from listener katieiscunning, who loves the character of Spoiler AKA Robin AKA Batgirl AKA Stephanie Brown, and made V and Emily love her, too! Plus, author Mary Borsellino began a comics accountability website known as Project Girl Wonder in reaction to Steph's awful death, and fans have been taking DC to task for their sexism ever since. Hey, true crime friends! This week we are closing out the Death in the Dorm series. For the final episode, we are discussing the murder of Western Kentucky University freshman, Katie Autry. Katie Autry was the first person in her family to go to college, but all of the hopes and dreams her family had for her (and that she had for herself) were tragically put to an end in the Spring of 2003. Katie had been the victim of a brutal attack in her own dorm room. She fought for her life for three days before she passed. One of her killers is in jail for life. The second alleged killer walks free today. Sources: Death in the Dorms: Episode 6 Head to Broadview Press, an independent academic publisher, for all your humanities-related books. Episode 244: On the morning of the 8th of July 1917, thirty-nine-year-old Tom Thomson, a renowned Canadian painter and skilled outdoorsman, set off well-supplied for a day-long fishing excursion in his canoe on Canoe Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park in Whitney, Ontario. A canoe, later identified as Thomson's, was found floating upside down in the lake later on the same day. When Tom did not return from his fishing trip the next day, his friends became concerned. Eight days after Thomson first set out, Dr. G. W. (Goldwyn) Howland, a cottager from Toronto, spotted Tom's bloated and decomposed body floating in the lake. An examination of Thomson's body uncovered a large bruise on the right side of his head, and blood had come out of his right ear. Thomson's death was quickly ruled an accident, and no police investigation occurred. Thomson was laid to rest in Mowat Cemetery near Canoe Lake, where he'd died. However, Thomson's older brother George demanded the body be exhumed. Two days later, Tom's grave was re-opened, the casket removed, and he was re-interred on July 21 in the family plot beside the Leith Presbyterian Church in what is now the Municipality of Meaford, Ontario. Officially the matter was closed, but mythology has grown around Thomson's death. In the intervening years since Thomson's death, investigations by sleuths, amateur and professional, have come to various conflicting conclusions. Some agree with the initial findings that Thomson died due to accidental drowning. Others, however, suggest that Tom Thomson was murdered. Grab your notebooks and sharpen those pencils, it's time to take notes on how to not die in Yellowstone. Designated as the world's first national park, Yellowstone is unique in so many ways. From its distinct thermal features, various species of iconic wildlife and picturesque landscapes this park draws in millions of visitors annually. 149 years of people flooding the gates, roadways and trails has left Yellowstone with its fair share of tragedy. So much in fact, that hundreds of stories have filled thousands of pages in our history books. As with every historical event, there is always a lesson to be found. Usually, a lesson of what not to do. Sadly, humans have a way of ignoring those messages and are doomed to repeat history again and again. Come along as Danielle and Cassie discuss disastrous tales of death in Yellowstone, and if you listen closely and are open to learning something new, you may just survive your next visit. We love our National Parks and we know you do too but when you're out there, remember to enjoy the view but watch your back.
