Matt and Laci take a long look at the 1998 horror-comedy film Bride of Chucky.    The Child's Play franchise stands out among the classic horror movie series because it has, from the beginning, largely been stewarded by one man: screenwriter Don Mancini. The show goes through Mancini's inspiration for writing the original 1988 film as a critique on the advertising industry, and the diminishing returns of the two sequels that caused the franchise to go dormant for most of the '90s. Then, the success of Scream led to a revitalization of horror, so Chucky was brought back from the dead, and this time, he'd have a manic gothic dream girl in the form of Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly). The history segment closes with a look at Jennifer Tilly's legacy, and how she had no idea how much playing Tiffany would define her career, or how much love people had for her character and the Chucky franchise. Then, Laci and Matt review Bride of Chucky itself—how well does it serve as a soft reboot of the franchise? Does the humor work? Does it successfully juggle its tones? Can puppets carry a movie on their own? And does something like this even need to try to be scary?

Menachem Herman and I got together for an evening of song and inspiration in Netanya last night. As a soul correction of our past, we've taken quite a few melodies and uplifted them with an emuna slant and lyrics. This is one of our favorites, which we originally did in 2008, when the UN and Obama were threatening to split Jerusalem:   Sweet Home Jerusalem Based on the original song "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, 1974 Guitar, adaptation by Menachem Herman Lyrics by Rabbi Lazer Brody    Eagles' wings keep on flying Carry me home to see The King Singing songs about my City Jerusalem you're in my dreams And I'm gonna sing, yes   Well I heard the UN talk about her But a Jewish boy won't drink this brew Uncle Sam please remember, that "Jerusalem, won't be split in two!"   Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem Where the skies are so blue Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem L-rd I'm coming home to you   We're all waiting for Moshiach You can bet he's coming soon We'll all be dancing in Jerusalem And we'll all be singing the same tune Now that's the truth   Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem Where the skies are so blue Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem L-rd I'm coming home to you   The wise men of the Holy City They've been known to pick a song or two They help my soul when I'm hurting They give me joy when I'm feeling blue Now how about you?   Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem Where the skies are so blue Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem L-rd I'm coming home to you Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem Where the skies are so blue Sweet Home, Sweet Jerusalem L-rd I'm coming home to you

This conversation with Nathan Lee Graham goes deeper than expected, mixing sharp humor with real insight into a career built on consistency, curiosity, and craft. He reflects on growing up between St. Louis and Los Angeles, navigating a childhood shaped by divorce, experimental schools, and parents who understood early on that the arts were his home. Nathan talks about discovering his calling in high school, the moment Marin Mazie encouraged him to move to New York, and how that one decision launched decades of steady work across stage and screen. Along the way he opens up about playing twins on Scrubs, aging in Hollywood, the discipline required to keep his instrument ready, and why he still sees himself first and foremost as a working actor rather than someone chasing fame. We also dive into the surprising path that led him to Zoolander the day after The Wild Party closed, the unique challenge and joy of creating memorable moments with only a handful of lines, and how he approaches every medium — stage, film, TV — with the same mindset and integrity. Nathan shares what it means to trust collaborators, what he's learning during previews of The Baker's Wife at Classic Stage Company, and why patience, perspective, and self-care have become essential to his life and artistry. It's a thoughtful, warm, and often funny look at a career defined not by one role, but by the sum of its parts and the relationships that shaped them. Nathan Lee Graham is a Grammy winner for Best Classical Album (Songs of Innocence and of Experience), a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award recipient for The Wild Party, and a Drama League Award nominee for Wig Out. His stage work includes originating roles in The Wild Party and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, with national tours of Hadestown and Show Boat. On screen, he is known for Zoolander, Zoolander 2, Sweet Home Alabama, Hitch, The Comeback, Scrubs, LA to Vegas, Mid-Century Modern, and more. He currently stars as Marquis in The Baker's Wife at Classic Stage Company. This episode is powered by WelcomeToTimesSquare.com, the billboard where you can be a star for a day.

Vampires and a happy ending: Three Minnesota romance buffs discuss how the genre is changing

If you're a romance reader, you won't be surprised to hear that romance is the biggest genre in publishing. Nearly 40 million romance novels were sold in 2024. Books range from flirty (fade to black) to downright steamy (open door), with myriads of subgenres and tropes to choose from. (Rom-com! Paranormal romance! Historical fiction!)So this week, Big Books and Bold Ideas host Kerri Miller sits down with three Minnesota romance experts to talk about romance writing and reading today. She brings some quizlets and challenges, and each author shares an excerpt of a romance novel that has stuck with them. Big Books and Bold Ideas Romance Roundtable Along the way, they discuss the rules of romance (happy endings are nonnegotiable), what differentiates a love story from a romance novel and how the industry is starting to adapt to the diversity readers want. They also recommend romance novels that have maybe slipped through the cracks but deserve attention. For Richards, that was the book she chose to feature in her excerpt: the historical queer romance “A Shore Thing” by Joanna Lowell. She also recommended anything by writer Cat Sebastian, particularly “It Takes Two to Tumble.” Tschida said readers should check out the wit and charm inherent in any Nikki Payne novel, who is best know for her rewrites of Jane Austen. “Start with ‘Pride and Protest,'” Tschida recommended, “and then move on to ‘Sex, Lies and Sensibility.'” She also prescribed Carly Bloom, who writes books broader than the cowboy romance genre she is often stuck in. Palmer said she'll “never stop talking” about Naina Kumar. Her most recent book, “Flirting with Disaster,” is similar to the movie “Sweet Home Alabama” — but in this case, a hurricane traps a couple headed toward divorce in the home they built together when their love was young. Guests: Ellie Palmer is the author of “Four Weekends and a Funeral” and the just published “Anywhere With You,” which is set in the north woods of Minnesota.
