The State of American Media in this Time of War. Pentagon Blackout: Why No Reporters Embedded with Troops is a Loss for Everyone. How is America Right Now? The Hero Next Door - Stories from the Wars America Forgot. Martha Raddatz has spent decades doing the work most of Washington can't or won't — getting on the ground, walking with troops, sitting across from presidents, and refusing to look away. And she's known Paul for two decades. The morning after she received the Lifetime Achievement Emmy, ABC News' Chief Global Affairs Correspondent returns (previous appearance on episode 61) to the show to talk about the state of journalism, the blackout on military coverage, and her new book The Hero Next Door. This is the conversation that doesn't happen on cable news anymore, because the access has been cut, the embeds are gone, and the briefing room has been handed to the MAGA machine. Paul and Martha go deep on the propaganda Pentagon press corps, the eerie silence around 50,000 troops staged near Iran, the bridge between civilians and the military that keeps collapsing, and the human cost of forever wars that most Americans have tuned out. Martha shares the stories of the veterans in her book — a paralyzed Marine Raider turned founder, an Army doc operating on the wounded in Dnipro — and makes the case that curiosity, empathy, and a touch of outrage are still the only way to get to the truth. Martha Raddatz is in a class of her own. Iran blinks and the people who wanted war don't know what to do with peace. The crazy thing is global media outlets get it, as British news understands the Trump playbook while American media like MSNOW reads soap opera-esc monologues about war crimes and the end of our own civilization. Hawk examines the recent suppression of a Department of Homeland Security and FBI intelligence memo intended for state and local law enforcement regarding increased domestic threat levels. This five page document warned of potential Iranian proxy or sleeper cell activity within the United States following the initiation of war on February 28th. A separate classified report from the National Intelligence Council suggests that even a large scale military campaign would likely fail to oust the clerical and military establishment in Iran. Despite reports of significant missile and drone strikes hitting Tel Aviv and U.S. military bases in the region, mainstream American media outlets remain largely silent on these developments. This lack of coverage coincides with major media organizations and social media platforms paying millions to Donald Trump to settle various legal disputes. The ownership of major news outlets by billionaires and individuals with specific geopolitical interests has led to a climate of self-censorship and a failure to provide a complete picture of the conflict. This behavior reflects a concerning trend of obeying in advance to avoid conflict with the current administration. Everybody knows the media leans mostly left, and that when there's a conservative or Republican in political office, the news outlet assumes attack dog mode — but when there's a Democrat or liberal in political office, the journalists basically adopt the party's talking points as their coverage. But trust in media has fallen to such lows, media outlets are nervous. They're starting to hire more conservatives. As Ryan Wolfe, with The Fund for American Studies, said: Even The Washington Post and The Boston Globe have hired conservatives for their opinion pages. It's a brand new day in media.

We're seeing the same far-right media consolidation in America as during Putin's rise to power. Bari Weiss is the new Roger Ailes, hired to destroy CBS News. The far-right Ellisons are aggressively going after Warner Bros. to build a media monopoly to dumb down more Americans so that we're easier to control.  That's why Andrea spoke at Courier News' Courage & Cowardice event in Washington, DC on December 11. Courier, the team that built the searchable Epstein files database released by Congress, brought together independent journalists and creators who still believe journalism is a public good. The main focus of the conversation, which you can listen to here on Gaslit Nation, was how to build and sustain independent media. Andrea was joined by progressive YouTuber Jack Cocchiarella, Brian Beutler, formerly of Crooked Media and The New Republic who now runs  Off Message; TikTok comedian Meredith Lynch; and in a discussion moderated by veteran editor Mark Jacob, formerly of the Chicago Tribune, to talk about media capitulation and how to fight back. Here's some info on the event.  Luckily, the Media and Democracy Project (MAD) exists and provided us with the following actions you can take:  Make videos highlighting moments of real accountability like celebrating the ABC reporter Mary Bruce who pressed MBS and Trump with tough, substantive questions. Credit your sources clearly and encourage your audience to click through and read the original reporting. The American Media continues to mislead us about the truth about everything. Example, is it true that Hurricane Melissa devastated the island of Jamaica? NO. Yet they report that. Is it true that Somalia is a dirty country? No... Yet the President reports that and the public believes it because that is what the American media shows about the other... which continues to create false narratives about people and places. What if we were to say that Hurricane devatated the US? Would that be true? No for it only affected the people in New Orleans. Send us a textCarnival didn't just arrive on Eastern Parkway; people fought for it, paid for it, and sometimes lost careers over it. I sit down with Herman Hall, publisher of Everybody's Magazine and longtime promoter to map how Caribbean culture took root in New York and how a small community magazine became a historical record. From a 1978 Bob Marley cover that sold out twice to the tumult of the Grenada revolution and Michael Manley's labor politics, Herman walks us through the moments that turned diaspora headlines into global stories. We dig into the migration from Harlem to Brooklyn, the resistance to bringing Carnival to the museum grounds, and the quiet pioneers who made Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights home decades earlier. Herman explains why he ran publishing and promotion in tandem, taking Oliver Samuels across boroughs and managing calypso legend Shadow. The theme is consistent: build platforms that pay artists, grow audiences, and keep Caribbean voices in the spotlight. As the media landscape shifts, Herman shares a pragmatic view: print won't die, but it won't be the same. He's preserving a vast archive - photos, interviews, and manuscripts. In addition, he is writing new books tracing Caribbean contributions from Alexander Hamilton and Claude McKay to Shirley Chisholm and Colin Powell. If you enjoy this episode, follow the show, share with a friend who loves Caribbean culture, and leave a review. I have marked the beginning of that part of the discussion with a beep and the discussion lasts for four minutes and four seconds after the beep if you wanted to skip past it.    Last week we told you “Don't Panic!” but this week we focus in on the panic.    Panic in Year Zero was directed by and stars Ray Milland and is about a father taking his family on the road to do some camping. One the way there a nuclear bomb is dropped on Los Angeles and the world starts to fall into disarray. Not because of the bomb causing devastation or radiation but because of how human s are absolute nutters given the slightest chance.   This film has a very 1950s sensibility but with a Jazz laden soundtrack that hints at the unruly decade ahead.   The Federal Civil Defense Administration in the US in the early 50s was set up by President Truman to educate and prepare the public in case of an attack on US soil. The short film mentioned in the discussion The House in the Middle can be viewed on YouTube here.    This episode we talk not just about the film but the human fascination with apocalypse. I have the perfect guests for the task.   Steven Schlozman is a psychiatrist and a writer of books including the novel The Zombie Autopsies which was being adapted to film by George Romero before his death in 2017.   John Wills is a Professor of American Media and Culture at the University of Kent. Paramount, which owns CBS, will pay 16-million dollars to settle a lawsuit brought by Trump over the editing done to a 60 minutes interview with his then rival Kamala Harris. The interview aired on CBS' 60 Minutes before the 2024 election. CBS was not doing anything differently than usual, and they were not changing the tone and meaning of the interview. However, in this era of Trump threats, fear, and pressure, Paramount caved. The money will go toward Trump's presidential library and though na admission of wrongdoing will be offered, CBS will be required to publish transcripts of every presidential interview ftt to I'm now on. So why put the freedom of the press at risk with this outrageous settlement? Paramount is working to merge with Skydance Media, a deal that needs approval from the Trump administration.
